A sustainable environment is our commitment “Act so that the effects of your action are compatible with the permanence of genuine human life”. (H. Jonas) A few definitions: GWP – Global Warming Potential: is a measure of how much a given mass of greenhouse gas is estimated to contribute to global warming. It is a relative scale which compares the gas in question to that of the same mass of carbon dioxide (whose GWP is by definition 1). A GWP is calculated over a specific time interval and the value of this must be stated whenever a GWP is quoted or else the value is meaningless (a standard time interval is expressed by 100 years and written GWP100). ODP – Ozone Depletion Potential: is the relative amount of degradation to the ozone layer which a chemical compound can cause, with trichlorofluoromethane (R-11) being fixed as reference at an ODP of 1 (the worst).

Expansion without greenhouse gasses is a reality The P3ductal panel is produced utilizing, in world wide exclusive, the Hydrotec technology, based on an international patent EP 1115771B1, which allows to eliminate the greenhouse effect (GWP=0) and the impact on the ozone present in the atmosphere (ODP=0). The environmental compatibility of the P3ductal panel has been achieved through the use of water in the expansion process of the polyurethane foam, in substitution to the greenhouse effect flourinated gasses (CFC, HCFC, HFC) and of the hydrocarbons (HC). The Hydrotec technology used in the expansion of the Rigid Polyurethane PUR complies with all European Standards and anticipates future provisions which, from a restriction point of view , will ban all flourinated gasses.

P3ductal - other preinsulated: comparing panels Taking into account the impact from an allowed Kg of equivalent CO2 point of view, released during the production of 1 m² of 20,5 mm thick sandwich panel (with the same density) and considering only expanding agents which are principally used in the production of expanded rigid polyurethane sandwich panels destined for the preinsulated aluminium duct market, we obtain (approximated values): Type of expanding agent

P3ductal – Zinc coated sheet metal: the scenario In order to evaluate the environmental performance associated to the construction of P3ductal preinsulated aluminium ducts, produced with the Hydrotec expanding technology, P3 has put the entire production cycle through a scientific study conducted by a pool of researches according to the LCA methodology – Life Cycle Assessment (defined and classified by the International Standard ISO 14040). For this reason an analogical model for the entire production line was defined capable of pin pointing the life cycle environmental loads, from the extraction of the raw materials down to the distribution in Italy. The LCA analysis has allowed us to quantify among others, the following indexes: >> Greenhouse effect (GWP) >> Acidification (AP) >> Eutrophication Potential (EP) >> Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP) >> Photochemical Ozone Creation Potential (POCP)

P3ductal – Zinc coated sheet metal: comparing GWP The functional unit commonly used for zinc coated sheet metal is the kg, while panel ducts are sold by m². Taking in to consideration 8/10 mm thick zinc coated sheet metal with its accessories for the construction of the duct, the weight/surface conversion factor is of roughly 8. Therefore, considering that a kg of zinc coated sheet metal has a GWP100 of 3 (source IISI EDP) if we apply the conversion factor, we obtain that the GWP100 contribution per m² is 24. If instead we consider the typical insulation for zinc coated sheet metal ducts (rubber), we can estimate a GWP100 of around 4,5 per m², calculated on the basis of the Boustead Model which estimates a contribution of 3 per kg of rubber. Sais so, we obtain the following comparison table: u.m.

How to save 200.000.000 m2 of forest with P3ductal. The production of preinsulated aluminium panels needed for the construction of P3ductal ducts guarantees the reduction of CO2 emissions of 16 eq. kg compared to the production of the materials necessary for the construction of zinc coated sheet metal ducts with rubber insulation. Having assessed that the Italian annual insulated zinc coated sheet metal duct market is of 6 million m² and presuming to substitute this material with P3ductal aluminium preisulated panels, we can estimate a 200.000.000 m² of saved forest necessary to reabsorb the CO2 tied to the different production processes. The value has been obtained from the following calculation 16 x 6.000.000 x 2 = 192.000.000. where: > 16 is the difference of the GWP100 values between the P3ductal duct (GWP100 = 12,5) and the zinc coated sheet metal duct insulated with rubber (GWP100 = 28,5). > 6.000.000 m² is the Italian annual insulated zinc coated sheet metal duct market. > 2 are the m² of of forest necessary to compensate the production of 1 kg of CO2.

40 years at the service of air We have been working in the ducting distribution of conditioned air for more than three generations. Following a continuous technological and commercial development, we have innovated the construction system of traditional zinc coated sheet metal, developing the P3ductal technology which utilizes preinsulated aluminium panels for the construction of air distribution ducts. The P3ductal system is produced in various factories around the world, distributed in more than 40 countries and has at its disposal a wide technical-commercial web to support clients and planners during the choosing and utilization phases of the product. We have in addition created a school for certified duct makers guaranteeing in this way a high level of construction for preinsulated ducts. The continuous commitment to research and innovation of our laboratories which work hand in hand with various University research centres, is a guarantee of performance and of innovative materials.
