Eight Terex® luffing jib tower cranes were chosen by Select Plant Hire to help deliver The Shard in London, the glass-clad 87-floor tower, the tallest building in the EU at a height of 310 m. This project broke records by placing the tallest crane, a CTL 180-16, at a height of 317 m with the help of a “mega tie” system specially designed by Select, which used 20 m long lattice steel structures. The first crane models used were two Terex CTL 400 -24 luffing jib tower cranes configured with 40 and 50 m jib lengths to lift com ponents weighing up to 19,5 t. Model one was mounted on a 185 m steel cantilever grillage; model two was erected on a 132 m reinforced concrete foundation, anchored with a “mega tie” at 93 m.

An 84 m high Terex CTL 180-16, erected 200 m above ground, “jumped” or “climbed” into place at floor 56 to enable work on the Shard’s final spire, rising to level 96. The erection of the spire required over 100 lifts to raise the large floor and façade elements. Each of the spire’s façade sections can measure up to three floors. Comprised of 800 sep arate pieces of steel, entire sections were pre-mounted off-site, and then transported to the construction site. Fully extended, the Terex CTL 180-16 sat 317 m above ground level, 7 m taller than the highest point of the tower – a record for the highest crane ever used in the UK.

Designed by internationally renowned architect Renzo Piano, the 166 m tall tower in Turin’s historic downtown is the new group headquarters of one of Italy’s leading banks, San Paolo IMI. The tower houses offices for about 2.000 staff and a customer service center. It built in proximity to Turin’s historic downtown. The Design and construction of this modern building was complex. The tower featured steel and concrete structures with overhanging floors and a cantilevered auditorium. Positioning the Terex® Luffing Jib tower cranes that helped construct this tower, two CTL 630 and one CTL 430, was a challenge. Additionally, the very narrow jobsite, characterized by two adjoining main roads on either side of the building and a public park on the third, ruled out the use of a jib with hanging load over these zones. This and a tight construction schedule was why Terex Cranes was chosen for the job.

Just In Time SOlution SK 575 Maxim Crane Works USA

Maxim Crane Works, L.  P., acquired a new Terex® SK 575 tower crane as part of a full turnkey package to support general contractor Turner Construction’s project at the Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Office Building, Cincinnati, OH. The project involved the construction of an eight story building. The SK 575 was chosen for its fast assembly, lifting capacities and line speed to match the strict jobsite planning, performance and production requirements. The primary challenge on this restricted, urban jobsite was its tight “just-in-time” assembly schedule. Set within 30 m of an open lane of heavy traffic, strict traffic control and precise planning requirements were critical to the successful assembly of three cranes within the allocated two days. Maxim Crane Works called on Terex Cranes to work an extremely fast turnaround to deliver a brand new SK 575 directly to the jobsite within a month and a half of its customer’s order. Thanks to the responsive support of the Terex Cranes team, the entire process went precisely as planned. In addition to a crane’s intrinsic product qualities, delivering efficient results – particularly on an extremely tight “justin-time” schedule – demands the responsive support of a skilled team to provide the solutions its customer’s business relies on. “Terex Cranes’ support in application engineering has greatly contributed to our com pany’s success within the industry,” said Matt Hyden, Operations Manager for Tower Cranes, Maxim Crane Works.

Shipyard Duties SK 415-20 Detyens Shipyards USA

Two Terex® SK 415-20 hammerhead tower cranes operated by Detyens Shipyards, Inc., Charleston, South Carolina, proved their ex cellent lifting capabilities, reliability and costeffective performance. The family-owned business is well-experienced in the maritime industry. Founded by merchant mariner Mr. William Detyens in 1961, and owned by son-in-law, Mr. D. Loy Stewart since 1982, the company specializes in the repair, refurbishment and conversion of government-owned and commercial vessels. From dredgers and barges, to container carriers, tankers and cruise ships, the size of vessels has steadily increased over the years with the worldwide growth of the shipping industry. Detyens has adapted well to changing trends by offering ship owners a quality infrastructure with the ability to handle vessels of much larger dimensions. The acquisition of two Terex SK 415-20 hammerhead tower cranes was critical in meeting the challenge. As D. Loy Stewart explained, “Today’s vessels are very much larger than those that we have traditionally been accustomed to working on. The height, capacity and reach of our SK 415-20 cranes allow us to reach the ships’ extremes while enabling our operators to see exactly what they are doing, which is paramount to efficiency and safety.”

Building Mumbai’s Airport CTT Flat Top Cranes Larsen & Toubro India

To be able to handle the increase in passengers and meet the demand for larger cargo volumes, Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport in Mumbai has been continuously expanding since 2006. Larsen & Toubro (L & T) is building a new multi-story parking structure and a new air traffic control tower, and is relying on their Terex® CTT 181-8 and CTT 231-10 tower cranes to do the job. Construction work near India’s largest airport and in the country ’s most populated area while keeping the airport open during the construction phase is definitely a challenge.

To build the new parking structure and air traffic control tower, the cranes were set up inside the airport’s busy area due to their lower overall height. The Terex CTT 181-8, which was fixed to the ground, was chosen to build the new control tower, while the Terex CTT 231-10, with a rail configuration, was chosen for the parking structure. The cranes enabled the L & T team to perform their work quickly and precisely, while at the same time complying with strict safety regulations.

Five Terex® tower cranes (four Terex CTT 181B -8 TS 21 models and one Terex CTT 331-16 TS 23 model) worked for nearly two years on the construction of two residential towers as part of a large restructuring and re-design of Porta Nuova – Isola District in Milan, Italy. Once built, the towers will provide Milan with over 110.000 m² of office and residential space, 160.000 m² designated for pedestrian use and approximately 20.000 m² for cultural events. The project has prompted interest from the start, because they feature jutting terraces that will accommodate 480 medium and large-sized trees, 250 small trees, 11.000 perennials and ground cover plants, and 5.000 shrubs – in other words, 10.000 m² of woods. It is being constructed by several well-known Italian contractors. One of them is ZH GCC SpA from Campo Tures, outside Bolzano. As stated by its CEO Werner Zimmerhofer, “Terex provided the best solutions, as the CTT 331 stands out for operating speed and has an 8 t capacity. The CTT 181s are easy to operate and in my opinion are the most reliable in their category.”

Turn Key Crane SOlutions CTT 331-16 OAO Metrostroy Russia

HIGHLIGHTS Jib Length: 65 m (213 ft) Height: 150 m (492 ft) Custom application engineered collar masts with tensed cables.

OAO Metrostroy made use of a full “turn key” crane solution provided by Terex® on a major power station project in Saint Petersburg, Russia, involving the construction of a 120 m wide, 150 m high cooling tower to replace the existing facility. One of the initial constraints identified was the impressive height at which the crane would be working, which was no problem for the Terex CTT 331-16 tower crane. The plan was to erect the crane inside the cooling tower to protect it against the extreme weather conditions. This required a solution to avoid the labor-intensive and costly process of setting-up and dismantling the crane’s 65 m boom and telescopic cage inside the cooling tower wall. A system was devised consisting of eight pairs of 40 mm thick pre-stressed steel cable anchors, attached in two stages as the

cooling structure’s wall grew higher, and fixed on two separate levels of the crane’s tower. The cables were pre-stressed to compensate for stretching, and then rigged at a tension of 17 t per cable to withstand the increased pressure. An innovative jib dismantling device was also specially designed for the job. From March through September 2010, the CTT 331-16 worked around-the-clock using a self-climbing framework to adjust to the structure’s increasing height, steadily lifting and placing the steel reinforcements and liquid concrete to form the tower’s wall. “The CTT 331-16 performed perfectly – completing the job on schedule,” said Andrey Chukichev, Equipment Supplies Director, JSC GRPM, Saint Petersburg.

Restoring a World Heritage

HIGHLIGHTS

CBR 24 Plus World Monuments Fund Cambodia

Phnom Bakeng is one of the most threatened monuments of Angkor, Cambodia. Dating back to the late ninth century, the hill-top temple is probably the oldest in the area by several hundred years but today it is known for its panoramic view of the much larger Angkor Wat temple situated about 1,5 km away. Over the centuries Phnom Bakeng has suffered the ravages of nature and war but more recently is being damaged by tourism with up to 1.000 inadequately supervised visitors at any one time clambering on and damaging its fragile structure. Restoration work first started in 2004 when urgent stabilization work to the temple’s collapsed south west corner was carried out. Grants to the World Monuments Fund (WMF) by the US State Department in 2007 and 2011

Working at Angkor Wat’s oldest temples Crane was erected on purpose built “stage” Transported through dense jungle

allowed long-term conservation work to be carried out including stabilization, repair, waterproofing and partial reconstruction. To help with the restoration, the WMF decided the best way forward was to use a compact and easily transportable self-erecting tower crane for lifting and placing materials. They chose a Terex® CBR 24 Plus. A substantial raised reinforced concrete platform was constructed to form a solid base for the crane. Once the platform was completed, the Terex CBR 24 Plus was transported up the hill to the temple along a very small and steep pedestrian path that was widened by a locally rented bulldozer. After the crane was erected it was ready to assist with the restoration work.
