Perez supports minimum wage increase
Tom Perez, U.S. Secretary of Labor, was in the Mile High City last week in support of raising the minimum wage in Colorado. In attendance were business owners, business professionals, everyday working people and media. This coming November, Amendment 70 will be on the ballot to determine if Clerissa Salazar Colorado voters will pass or reject a minimum wage increase. Perez referred to the wage raise as, “a human dignity,” (issue) and referred back to the wage raise a couple of years ago. Perez encouraged input from the group and two women gave examples of what it was like to work and pay rent, food, electricity and all of the basic needs. They said it was impossible to afford and survive on the current minimum wage. There has been a push for a raise in minimum wage, and several business owners and corporation spokespeople said an increase would improve production. Workers who spoke of their need to meet the basic needs in life, yet knowing that the minimum wage in place was not enough to put food on the table. A minimum wage hike has been in the works and it is highly supported by Perez and other members of the Congress. Perez said, “Life in the U.S. should not be a

race to the bottom, minimum wage should not be a death sentence.” The current lifestyle of Americans, an increase in rent and other staples are all issues that demand more money that only a hike in minimum wage can fulfill. There were tears spilled when the topic of food stamps came to the table. “I want to rejoin the middle class. I don’t want to have
to work full time and still depend on food stamps,” said one home health caretaker Perez focused on the input and opinions of the working class. About 70 percent of the U.S economy is consumer spending, which means if there is more money being spent, it boosts the economy, lending credibility that a wage increase would help boost the economy. Perez talked about the wage increase in the state of Washington. He noted that the restaurant workforce (wait staff) was getting a raise, thereby contributing to the state’s economy. “ Everyone was worried about the wage increase, but on the following the day--the sun still rose,” Perez said. Perez added that Washington State is the highest minimum wage state and is excelling because of it. Overall, Perez lends his and Obama’s support of a minimum wage increase in Colorado. Opponents of Amendment 70 argue that a minimum wage increase will only work against the unemployment rate because they will have to lay off people from their jobs in order to afford payroll. Dijeron que era imposible sostenerse y sobrevivir con el salario mínimo actual. SCFD distributes money to metro area
The Scientific and Cultural Facilities District (SCFD) Board of Directors approved distribution of $7,649,204 to (246) scientific and cultural organizations in seven Denver Metro Counties. The Board of Directors heard presentations from representatives from all seven-county cultural councils on their county’s individual grant criteria, scoring processes, and funding plans. Organizations receiving funding will provide a variety of scientific and cultural programming and activities to residents.

Voters support early childhood education
Colorado voters of all backgrounds are united in their support for high-quality early education, according to a new bipartisan poll released today. The poll, from the Colorado Children’s Campaign and the First Five Years Fund (FFYF), found that 83 percent of voters believe the state should provide more young children the opportunity to participate in voluntary early learning settings. Additionally, voters across the state strongly support a range of investments in early childhood education that include providing voluntary coaching and education for new parents and increasing wages to attract and retain high-quality educators.

City council appointed Robert Sheesley, Esq. to the position of city attorney during the city council meeting on Monday. Sheesley’s appointment comes after a competitive search process concluded last month. He has been serving as interim city attorney since April 2016 when the longtime city attorney retired after more than 48 years.

The U.S. Navy said that the operation marked the first time the two countries have operated in waters so close to North Korea.

Somali demands answer: Somali government officials have expressed their anger after a U.S. airstrike killed 22 civilians and Somali so.l.diers. The airstrike was targeting extremists in the area. Somali government officials accused regional neighbor Puntland of misleading the U.S. into believing they were targeting extremists. The United Sates government said it killed nine al-Shabab militants, but it is investigating the situation. Families at risk of starving in Benghazi: Amnesty International has warned of the possibility of more than 100 families being at risk of starving in Libya. The families are trapped in the district of Ganfouda, Benghazi due to violence around the area. Entry roads in the region are blocked by fighting or by the Libyan National Army militia. Supplies to the district have been cut off by the Libyan National Army militia. The report from Amnesty International described children in the region as “skin and bones.”

Haiti cancels LGBT festival: Haiti’s LGBT festival has been cancelled due to threats of violence and government opposition. Government officials said the event was blocked to protect public morals. Lorraine Mangones, one of the festival’s organizers, said that she has received multiple threats of violence. The LGBT festival is held each year and is targeted at Afro-Caribbean communities. There are no laws against homosexuality in Haiti. However, the LGBT community is protected from discrimination by the law.

Putting a bully in his proper place
I was seven years old when I borrowed a book from an uncle a year older than me: “The Count of Monte Cristo” by Alexander Dumas, a French novel offered in serialized fashion in 1844-1845. I had previously borrowed another book, “Huckleberry Finn” (1885) by Mark Twain and knew that my uncle had good taste. “The Count of Monte Cristo” David Conde is a story of a young man put in prison for love, money and political reasons and while there, befriends an old man who shares a map to a treasure before dying. The protagonist escapes by taking the place of the old man in a body bag and becomes the richest man in the world. He then uses his wealth to get back at those who put him in prison. There is no better example of revenge as a motif in a novel, than Alexander Dumas’ piece. Like Dumas literary piece, Latin American TV novelas are full of love and adversity experienced by men and women in a world of exploitation and negativity. Oftentimes others create these circumstances, but eventually the hero will tri-

La reciente notoriedad de Alicia Machado, una actriz latina prominente y el Miss Universo de 1996, muestra una versión realista de esos temas cuando muestra un ejemplo excelente de sobrepasar a Donald Trump y su trato a las mujeres que no son perfectas a sus ojos. Esto se dobla para las latinas ya que ellas son veteranas de una lucha continua para controlar el machismo entre su propia gente. You could lose 25 percent of your retirement benefits
By Ruth Sanchez While the race for the White House dominates this summer’s news, new findings about Social Security should concern Colorado workers who are paying into Social Security today. We have long known that Social Security is headed for a fiscal cliff unless our political leaders take action to make the program financially sound. But an analysis by AARP makes clear just how damaging the cuts would be for Coloradans, including tens of thousands of Hispanics. Here is a glimpse of what a 25 percent cutback would mean to future retirees in our state: • The average annual family income of Colorado retirees would plunge by $4,100. For many state residents, losses would be much higher. • The poverty rate of older Coloradans would skyrocket 56 percent. Some 27,300 additional seniors would be pushed into poverty, and that includes a significant number of Latinos. In June, the Social Security Trustees reported that beginning in 2034, Social Security benefits will be cut automatically because of insufficient funds. Over time, acrossthe-board cuts of nearly 25 percent will take effect, unless our leaders act to prevent that from happening. To put a cutback of that size in perspective, consider that older Coloradans typically spend $8,300 a year on groceries, $5,600 a year on utilities, and $8,900 on health care. households to make painful choices about what to buy and what to do without – at a time when the cost of necessities like food and prescription drugs continues to rise. About 750,000 people receive Social Security benefits, which means that virtually every community in our state would be affected. While most of our Social Security beneficiaries are retirees, the money goes to people of all ages. As of 2012, nearly 50,000 Social Security recipients were children. Widows, workers with disabilities and their dependent family members were among the others. I realize that 2034 may seem far-off to some people, but kicking the can down the road – as Washington is famous for – is not an option.

That is why AARP launched Take A Stand – a national campaign to urge the presidential candidates to show leadership on Social Security. Thousands of Take A Stand volunteers have shown up at events around the country to tell the candidates soundbites aren’t good enough. Voters deserve to know what the candidates have in mind to keep Social Security strong for future generations, and how they and their families would be affected by any changes. America is celebrating Social Security’s 81st birthday. That is a perfect time to reflect on the program’s enduring value, as well as its needs. Social Security was created in a far different era, so it is easy to see that it could use some updating after all these years. But for that to happen, our political leaders must truly engage in this issue and give the public real answers about their plans. The next president will have to step up and make tough decisions to ensure that workers get the benefits they have earned. AARP’s new numbers about the impact a 25 percent cutback would have in our state make it clear that we need a much more detailed public debate. This is vital for younger workers, our children and our grandchildren. Just like today’s retirees, they too will depend on Social Security one day. Latina Luminaries – 2016 CWHF inductees In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, we celebrate these outstanding Latinas inducted into the Colorado Women’s Hall of Fame, starting with the three inducted in 2016. Sister Lydia Peña, SL, PhD – Served as a professor for the University without Walls at Regis University; raised funds to establish the Blessed Trinity Leadership Academy in Ghana and support the Sisters of Loretto in Pakistan, She served on boards of the Rose Community Foundation and Rocky Mountain PBS and chaired Denver’s Commission on Cultural Affairs. Anna Jo Garcia Haynes – Founded Mile High Montessori Early Learning Centers that serves low-income families and children. She co-founded the Colorado Children’s Campaign and was a “founding mother of the Women’s Foundation of Colorado. She chaired the Congress of Racial Equality and served on the Congressional Caucus on Women’s Issues. Arlene Vigil Kramer, EdD- Designed the first bilingual instruction curriculum for elementary students in Colorado and co-founded the Colorado Association for Bilingual and Bicultural Education. She was the first Latina to complete a Doctor of Education degree from the University of Colorado and served as regional director of the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare (HEW). The Honorable Christine Arguello – Is the first Hispanic U.S. District Court Judge for the District of Colorado. She was also the first Hispanic to be promoted to partner at one of the then “big four” law firms in Colorado. Arguello was the first Latina elected to the Board of Education for Colorado Springs School District 11. (Inducted 2014). Clarissa Pinkola Estés – An award-winning Latina author-poet, Estés is also a certified Jungian analyst who served Columbine High School families and 9/11 families as a post-trauma specialist. Her book, “Women Who Run with The Wolves” has been translated into 32 languages. She served two governors on the Colorado State Grievance Board. (Inducted 2006). Eppie Archuleta – A weaver globally recognized for preserving Spanish colonial and Chimayo Indian style rugs,
tapestries and serapes Archuleta employed techniques that known in her family since the mid-1600s. She honored an ancient folk art that uses wood-fire heating, bark, weeds and herbs for dyeing and spinning the yarn into exquisite products and artwork. (Inducted 1997). Erinea “Nea” Garcia Gallegos – One of Colorado’s first Hispanic women to earn a college degree, Gallegos was recognized by President Franklin Roosevelt when
Convention Center. She serves on the boards of Fortune 500 companies and is a co-owner of the Colorado Rockies. Alvarado has been inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame. (Inducted Colorado 2002.) Maria Guajardo, Ph.D. – A clinical psychologist and early childhood specialist, Guajardo has advocated for children locally, nationally and internationally. As director of the Denver Mayor’s Office for Education and Children, she launched a project that opened cultural venues to poor families with young children. (Inducted 2010). Martha Urioste – Received national recognition for pioneering a public Montessori elementary school in Denver. Urioste also founded Family Star, an Early Head Start Center serving children from birth to age 3. A gifted writer, she produced a foreign language elementary school guide and was Denver’s first bilingual coordinator for secondary schools. Student of the Week program kicks off next week The SOTW program was implemented in 2005 and we are celebrating 11 years of profiling students with incredible academic achievements and community involvement. The program has a very rich history of highlighting the best overall students in Colorado statewide high schools. The very first Student of the Week, Victoria Garcia, is now a teacher. Many deserving students filled the time frame from 2005 to present. The SOTW program stipulates that one student out of many capable students is chosen to receive the SOTW scholarship. Last year Carlos Diaz was the scholarship winner and today he is a freshman at Colorado School of Mines. Jesus Lechuga Jr. was a highlighted student in 2005. He was a student at North High School and graduated from the University of San Diego majoring in accounting and finance and is now working
for the City of Denver as a commercial real estate appraiser. In 2014, Jared Padilla was our scholarship winner. He attended John F. Kennedy High School, graduated from Metro State University and now works at Whiting Gas & Oil Corperation in downtown Denver. The program was created to highlight high school seniors who deserve recognition for all of their hard work and who are headed for college. The program has become an integral part of the La Voz and this year Denver7 (KMGH-TV, the ABC affiliate) will provide a $1500 scholarship to one deserving student. Denver7 is the 2016/2017 SOTW sponsor and will work with La Voz to highlight the weekly winners. La Voz is proud to continue this valuable program in an effort to provide role models for our community, stu-

Peel onion and cut into large chunks. Cover bottom of large, 6-quart slow cooker with half the chopped onion, potatoes and carrots. Lay seared pork loin over top and surround with remaining vegetables. In small bowl, whisk together minced garlic, apple butter, mustard, soy sauce and broth. Pour mixture over pork and vegetables. Cover slow cooker and cook on low 8-10 hours or high 4-6 hours. Once potatoes are tender, cut tenderloin into thin slices and place on platter, surrounded by vegetables. Taste gravy, and season with salt and pepper, as needed, then pour gravy over pork and serve.

Colorado loves local.” McGannon agrees, “Long before it was popular, King Soopers featured numerous locally sourced products. We have been the largest purchaser of locally produced food for more than two decades, and supporting local companies has always been an important part of our business strategy.” Much of the corporate business strategy was established by longtime president, Russ Dispense. After spending 51 years working at King Soopers in Colorado, Dispense retired from his post this summer. He was the longest serving president in the history of the company and was a prime example of the corporate policy to promote from within; Dispense started at the company as a grocery bagger at the age of 16. Dispense left the organization on solid footing with 149 stores throughout the state of Colorado and amidst substantial change in the grocery industry. He helped to lead the effort called Your Choice Colorado that would have allowed the sale of full strength beer and alcohol sales in grocery stores. Because the initiative would have likely passed on the November ballot, the Colorado
state legislature passed a compromise law allowing increased sales through grocery stores and causing the King Soopers supported initiative to be pulled from the ballot. King Soopers is capitalizing on other industry changes including increased use of technology. In 1972, Kroger became the first grocery retailer in America to test an electronic scanner. King Soopers became an industry leader by introducing loyalty cards in 1997. This summer, the grocery store chain ended the policy of doubling coupons and instead, will push customers to use their web site and online app to download digital coupons. In a press release, company spokesperson, Kelli McGannon said, “This change will please the rapidly growing segment of our customers who prefer to shop and save without the hassle of clipping paper coupons.” The company recently launched ClickList to both save time for consumers and drive traffic to the company web site. Through ClickList, shoppers can order their grocery list and pay for it online and drive by their local store for a no-lines, quick pick-up. Over 40,000 items are available through the online service and customers are allowed to set up a pick-up time and date to accommodate busy schedules. According to McGannon, “As our customers change, we have to change. ClickList is available
in most stores and is one more way we are working hard to earn business. For the time deprived and as a reflection of busy lifestyles, we are meeting them where they are. Customers never have to get out of their cars with home delivery or online ordering.” King Soopers has long been known as a neighborhood steward, promoting issues in their stores that help to create stronger communities. This year, the company will be donating $3 million for breast cancer research through a campaign called Sharing Courage. Through the web site, www.sharingcourage.com, breast cancer survivors and supporters can share stories and words of encouragement with those patients and families currently fighting the disease. Through a flu shot promotion campaign, King Soopers is supporting a non-profit that provides meals to the millions of Americans without enough healthy food. For every flu shot given at a King Soopers pharmacy, the company donates a meal to Feeding America and their network of over 200 community food banks. King Soopers is a fully-owned subsidiary of the Kroger Company. Through acquisitions and growth, King Soopers has always maintained its corporate headquarters in Denver. The grocery store chain boasts 149 stores throughout the State of Colorado.
Along with City Market stores which are more prevalent in Colorado’s western part of the state, the chain extends throughout Wyoming as well. The company was founded in 1947 by Lloyd J. King with the first grocery store in Arvada. King’s mission was to offer shoppers “friendly service, value, cleanliness and quality”. King Soopers grew to nine stores under King’s leadership and was acquired by the Dillon Companies in 1957. In 1983, Dillons merged into Kroger. Today, King Soopers is part of a series of grocery stores operating in other parts of the country under such names as Fry’s, Ralphs, Loaf ‘n Jug, and Dillons. The Loaf n Jug, King Soopers, and City Market divisions of Kroger sold $26.6 billion in 1st quarter 2016. The system is home to eight manufacturing and distribution facilities which include store brands for Jackson Ice Cream, and King Soopers dairy, meat and bakery. Kroger boasts $1 billion in goods and services sourced from women and businesses owned by people of color. McGannon says the chain, “Welcomes all customers. The secret to making ordinary food taste great! Clerissa Salazar It’s that time of the year when the scents of roasted chile remind Latino families and mainstream too, that it’s time to stock up with your chile fix until next season. There are chile vendors/roasters on the streets of Denver, Pueblo and other Colorado communities. As the smell of chile fills the fall air it is a comforting scent associated with tradition. The powerful, delicious scent brings back memories of the traditional Latino childhood. Your senses are alive, the smell of fresh tortillas, roasted chile, freshly cooked beans are summoned from your own childhood or from your own kitchen year after year. There are many places to find chile. Our southern neighbor, Pueblo is mostly known for its incredible product. Pueblo chile has been ranked via the Scoville Heat Unit, used in measuring chile heat. Pueblo chile ranges from 5,000 to 20,000 heat units. The chile is great in salsa, but it is even better when it is roasted and incorporated into other dishes too. Pueblo chile is easily the most popular in Colorado and consumers are known to travel across the state and from out of the state to stock up. Another competitor is grown in Hatch, New Mex. Grown

in and around Hatch, it is one of the most requested during chili season. Unlike the Pueblo chile which ranges from mild to a category called Dynamite, Hatch chile has more of a “backburner” feel to it. Whether it’s Pueblo or Hatch chile, there is no guarantee that the chile will have the exact spice. The chile harvest is typically September, and since chile is a staple for many Latino familes, restaurants in the Southwest
and even for mainstream cooks, the chile run is one that many people make in the fall. In Denver the Chili Guys and Morales Family Chile are popular places to buy chile. Both businesses carry Hatch and Pueblo chile. If you are a chile connoisseur, then plan a trip to Chimayo, New Mex. where some of the nations best chile is grown. Chimayo is about 25 miles north of Sante Fe. While Chimayo is usually known for its Catholic Church, El Santuario, it is also common to see people selling and roasting the Chimayo pepper nearby. Described as smoky, the Chimayo pepper isn’t one that is easily accessible in stores. The pepper is unique to that region and therefore can only be found there. Further south, is the town of Socorro, another place known for growing great chile. Socorro is home to farmers that raise more than five different varieties of green chile. The chili season is synonymous with fall. Plan your chile run well. Coordinate a weekend getaway and pick up your much loved staple then. Not understanding what all the commotion is about? Latinos know the secret to make ordinary food taste great, and that ingredient is chile.

En honor del Mes del Ancestro Hispano, nosotros honramos a estas sobresalientes Latinas que han sido admitidas en el Salón de la Fama de Mujeres de Colorado, comenzando con tres que fueron incorporadas en el 2016. Alicia Valladolid Cuarón – Fue la primera ejecutiva latina directora de la Colorado Economic Development Agency, State Fair Commissioner y directora ejecutiva femenina del National Hispanic Association of Construction Enterprises. Después de entrar a las Sisters of St. Francis of Penance and Christian Charity, la Hermana Alicia fundó la Familia Franciscan AIDS Ministry and Bienestar Family Services. (Admitida 2008) Anna Jo García Haynes – Fundó las Mile High Montessori Early Learning Centers que ayuda a familias y niños de bajos ingresos. Ella co-fundó la Colorado Children’s Campaign y fue “madre fundadora de Women’s Foundation of Colorado. Ella dirigió el Congress of Racial Equality y fue al Congressional Caucus con problemas de las Mujeres. Arlene Vigil Kramer, EdD- Diseñó el primer currículo de instrucción bilingüe para estudiantes elementales en Colorado y co-fundó el Colorado Association for Bilingual and Bicultural Education. (Incorporada 1997). Erinea “Nea” García Gallegos – Una de las primeras mujeres hispanas en obtener un grado universitario, Gallegos tuvo reconocimiento del presidente Franklin Roosevelt cuando él la nombró directora del correo en San Luis. Antes de su nombramiento ella era maestra y directora escolar en Conejos y San Luis. (Incorporada 2012). Juana Bordas –Co-fundó Mi Casa Resource Center reconocido nacionalmente. Mi Casa entrena con frecuencia a mujeres – a ahora hombres – en trabajos no-tradicionales que requieren desarrollo inmediato. Bordas fue también la primera presidenta del National Hispana Leadership Institute. (Incorporada) 1997. Lena Lovato Archuleta –La primera directora hispana de Denver Public Schools, Archuleta se distinguió también como maestra, bibliotecaria y supervisora de educación bilingüe. Ella fue presidenta de la Colorado Library Association y miembro de la State Board of Community Colleges and Vocational Education. (Incorporada 1985). Linda Martínez Alvarado – Fundó Alvarado Construction que ayudó a construir el DIA(por sus siglas en inglés) y el Denver Convention Center. Está en la junta de compañías de Fortune 500 y es co-dueña de los Colorado Rockies. Alvarado ha sido Incorporada al National Women’s Hall of Fame. (Incorporada Colorado 2002.) María Guajardo, PhD. – Psicóloga clínica y especial-
ista en niños precoces, Guajardo ha abogado por los niños local, nacional e internacionalmente. Como directora del Denver Mayor’s Office for Education and Children, ella lanzó un proyecto que abrió las avenidas culturales para las familias pobres con niños pequeños. (Incorporada 2010). Martha Urioste – Recibió el reconocimiento nacional por ser pionera de las Montessori elementary school in Denver. Urioste fundó también Family Star, un Early Head Start Center que enseña a los niños desde su nacimiento hasta la edad de 3años. (Incorporada 2000) Ramona Martínez – Durante cuatro términos en el Denver City Council, Martínez condujo la adopción de un plan de acción afirmativa para negocios minoritarios y de mujeres que les permitía competir por oportunidades en el Denver International Airport. Ella persuadió a la Colorado Contractors Association a entrenar mujeres como operadoras de equipo pesado. (Incorporada 2010). Broncos continue their trek Last year’s Denver Broncos were a nightmare for opposing quarterbacks week in and week out. This year they haven’t missed a step facing some pretty talented QB’s in Cam Newton, Andrew Luck, Andy Dalton and Jameis Winston. We all knew that Denver’s defense would continue causing issues for opposing teams despite loosing Danny Travae then and Malik Jackson. The BRANDON RIVERA offense was in a place where many had their doubts and while they aren’t close to being an offensive juggernaut, the offense is producing just enough to take pressure off the defense. This week Denver traveled to Tampa Bay to face the Buccaneers in their second road game of the season. Tampa Bay quarterback Jameis Winston has been praised by critics as Tampa’s next coming after the 2015 season. Winston had thrown 15 interceptions for the entire 2015 season, however, the Bucs’ young gunslinger has now thrown eight interruptions in his first four starts, two of which came at the hands of ex-Buc cornerback Aqib Talib. Talib’s two picks off Winston yesterday proved to be too much for the Bucs in the end, and although Talib didn’t score on either of his picks, it didn’t take much for Denver’s offense to capitalize on both, adding points to the board. Just before the half, QB Trevor Siemian was thrown to the ground by Tampa’s defensive lineman, Clinton McDonald after the pocket collapsed. That play ended Siemian’s day as
he was carted off the field to be medically evaluated, just before the half. The next play, rookie QB Paxton Lynch came onto the field and tossed an incomplete pass down field before Denver punted the ball. Denver’s defense held the Bucs on the ensuing drive to give rookie QB Lynch an opportunity to march the offense down the field to set up for a 38-yard field goal extending their lead to 17 - 7 before the half. By the second half it was apparent that Denver would stick with Lynch as a precaution to Siemian’s injury (his non-throwing arm). Denver’s offense didn’t skip a beat adding another 10 more points by the end of the game. If Sunday’s game wasn’t enough proof that the Broncos have two very capable QB’s, maybe the fact that Lynch who many believe to be Denver’s future seemed to be more mobile than his predecessor Siemian, as well as better arm strength, could be the proof in the pudding skeptics are eyeing. Either way Denver is quietly making their case for a Super Bowl appearance repeat. In other sports the Colorado Rockies quietly finished their 2016 season over the weekend losing to the Milwaukee Brewers both Saturday and Sunday. Additionally Rockies Skipper Walt Weiss and the Colorado Rockies have parted ways. Weiss resigned as the Rox General Manager. It is unknown at this time who will be filling that position next season.
