History Tells Us One Vote Does Make a Difference • • • • • • •

In 1916, Democrat President Woodrow Wilson won re-election by capturing the electoral vote in California. He won there by 3,733 votes, less than one vote per precinct. A switch of less than 10,000 votes in Ohio and Hawaii in 1976 would have elected Gerald Ford over Jimmy Carter. In 1950, a larger turnout of voters in Ottawa County would have elected a Republican Governor (Kelly) of Michigan. The Democrat candidate won by less than 1,200 votes out of almost 2 million cast. In 1986, if just 22,000 voters had switched their votes in four states (Alabama, Colorado, North Dakota and South Dakota), the Republicans would have controlled the U.S. Senate for four more years. In 1990, a heavy turnout in Ottawa County resulted in the election of a Republican Governor (Engler) in Michigan by a very narrow margin - an average of just 3 votes per precinct statewide. The election of the President in 2000 was so close it took weeks to determine the winner. Ottawa County’s strong Bush support kept Gore busy campaigning in Michigan and out of states that would have given him the presidency. Ronald Reagan won ten states in 1980 with margins of less than 20,000 votes in each state. If that kind of margin had occurred in previous elections: • The Presidential elections of 1948 (Truman) and 1968 (Nixon) would have been decided by the House of Representatives. • Richard Nixon, Republican candidate, would have defeated John Kennedy, Democrat candidate, in 1960. • Gerald Ford, Republican candidate, would have defeated Jimmy Carter, Democrat candidate, in 1976.

This election is critical. I’m encouraging you to vote, not just as the Chair Ottawa County Republican Party, but as a mom. Our comeback is on the line this November. We must return a Republican majority to the State House to continue making Michigan the most business-friendly state in the nation. We have to put more conservative voices on the State Board of Education so that parents get to make decisions in schools, not government bureaucrats. We must return our Rule-of-Law Supreme Court Justices, Joan Larsen and David Viviano, so that the proper checks and balances are in place for our three branches of government. Your vote this November is critical in protecting Michigan’s Comeback for generations to come.
