Farewell: 126 cumulative years of service to SH This school year will mark the final year for some of Sacred Heart’s longest serving faculty and staff. After 47 years of teaching History, German, leading music and more, Rick Nicholls will officially leave his post. We wish him well and appreciate his dedication to helping us be prepared because after all, “Someday, someone will expect you to know something.”

Pre-K Playground Thanks to the generous support of Sacred Heart alumnus Sandy DeSalvo (’73), the SH Pre-School now has a dedicated playground. In only its second year, the 3 and 4-year-old students have shared an outdoor space with the K-2 students. However, they were restricted to a small area and equipment suitable for their age range. “With the addition of the new fence, swings, climbing equipment, and tri-cycles, they are now able to run more freely and have more space to play,” said Director and teacher Amanda Lunsford.

SH Families Support Tornado Relief 4th graders Jake Session, Karlee Cooper, Maggie Lentz, and Brock Gottsponer

Following the devastating tornados that struck close to home in April, parish and school families at Sacred Heart worked together to collect a U-Haul full of needed supplies. Each class at SH was asked to provide a different item, while church members and community supporters donated other necessities. All supplies were delivered to relief organizations who distributed them where needed. Our hearts go out to those families who have lost loved ones and/or their homes.

The Sacred Heart Drama program recently wrapped up its annual Spring Play: The Lion, The Witch, & The Wardrobe. This year’s cast more than doubled from last year, involving 38 performers in grades 1-10. The public performances consisted of a school presentation, a Saturday evening dinner theater, and a Sunday afternoon matinee. The production received positive reviews for students’ acting abilities and many accolades for the beautiful set and costumes. The play was under the direction of Sarah Croswell and Diana Denton with art and set design under the direction of George Hoelzeman. Proceeds from the three performances were enough to cover the club’s budget for next year and to cover a portion of the costs of replacing damaged curtains and making improvements backstage. Drama Club Director, Sarah Croswell, was recently awarded an Arkansas Community Fund Giving Tree Grant to offset the cost of purchasing a new traveler curtain and track system. Plans are also in the

works to enclose a portion of the backstage area to create a costume closet and prop storage room. Thanks to all the wonderful Sacred Heart alumni and community supporters who helped make this season such a huge success!

Stock Market Game Winners Named

Mrs. Martha Briggler’s Computer Applications I and II and Accounting Classes participated in the Stock Market Game again this year. The Stock Market Game is sponsored by Economics Arkansas. They competed against teams from other schools in their region of the state where they placed 11th with a total of $102,445. They were treated to lunch at Chili’s for their success.

The 2014 PeeWee Banquet marked 14 years of service for Kenny Hoelzeman. Kenny began volunteering for the PeeWee basketball program when his daughter was in third grade; he has served as Assistant Coach, Coach, and PeeWee Coordinator. As the Coordinator, Kenny has given countless hours to scheduling games, organizing tournaments recruiting coaches, creating a worker schedule for peewee home games, and likely many more jobs that no one ever sees. He could often be found at the scoreboard table during games and pushing a mop after games. Kenny’s heart for peewee basketball is evident and his service greatly appreciated. In honor of his service, parents made donations to Sacred Heart and a paver will be placed in the Rebel Plaza noting his 14 years of dedication to SH PeeWee basketball.

SH Alum Ordained as Deacon Contributed By Sharon Hoyt

Ronnie Hoyt graduated from Sacred Heart High School in 1980. He went on to Arkansas Tech and graduated in 1984 with a degree in accounting. I met this jobless young man with a ton of potential in June of 1984. In July, he went to work for Wal-Mart Inc. at the home office in Bentonville. Always working to better himself, he studied and became a C.P.A. (Certified Public Accountant), as well as a C.I.A. (Certified Internal Auditor). Ronnie continued to work his way up the corporate ladder of success. Having many different responsibilities over the years, from store auditor, to opening and heading up the vision centers, to Sr. Vice President, Divisional Merchandise Manager...until finally daring to ask

May 2014 • Vol 5, Issue 3 himself, “Is this it?” I have seen men in his position become corrupted by money, power, and their own egos. Not once did Ronnie Hoyt ever waver. In 2006, with his strength of character and his morals ever intact, he retired from his high powered executive job with the world’s largest retailer...”to find himself”. Our kids were growing up, going off to college, and getting married. Perhaps we both hit a mid-life crisis…I went back to work full time and opened my own hair salon with Ronnie coming in to do the book work. Somehow, him showing up with a can of skoal in his back pocket, a T shirt that read “ski naked” on the front, and his “Get ‘er Done” hat, wasn’t quite the right fit for him either! This is about the time he was called to the Diaconate Program. We went to Little Rock for the interviews, still discerning if this was what we wanted, what the church wanted, and most importantly, what God was calling us to do. Ronnie went into the program fully recognizing that “God doesn’t call the qualified, He qualifies the called.” With that in mind, we would see where four years would take us. Ronnie Hoyt was raised with a solid Christ centered foundation, instilled in him by his parents, the late Fred Hoyt and Irene Hoyt of the St. Elizabeth Community, along with twelve years of Catholic education at Sacred Heart School. Ronnie was ordained a Deacon in 2012, along with Steve Mallet of Sacred Heart. He serves the parish of St. Vincent de Paul in Rogers, AR as Deacon and as Parish Manager. His duties include serving at weekend Masses, monthly homilies, funerals, baptisms, weddings, visiting the sick...etc...On top of all of this he is learning to speak Spanish, with a parish of 14,500 active parishioners and sixty percent of them Latino, it has become necessary. As parish manager, he has taken on the responsibility for the village in Haiti that St. Vincent de Paul is responsible for. With the patience of Job, he handles issues ranging from the homeless, to the afflicted, who believe they are tormented by demons, to complaints about doors being locked, and light bulbs being burned out. I often ask myself, “When is it enough?” The answer to that is “Never”. We are called to be faithful and to serve, as Christ did...”To the death”. All we have to do is look at the cross and we are reminded of this. I look at Ronnie Hoyt, and I have always seen a humble, faithful, follower of Christ. Now, I see the follower as a humble, yet confident leader, a true disciple of Jesus. I remember his dad once said to me, “You must have seen something in him.” Fred Hoyt was right - I did, and I still do.

The Tradition Continues Annual Fund provides an avenue for supporters of Catholic education to help propel our school forward with the resources needed to enhance and strengthen the school’s high quality academic programs. The Gift Societies recognize donations to the school’s 2013-2014 Tuition Assistance, Campus Improvement, and Annual Campaigns. We sincerely appreciate the support of every alumnus, parent, grandparent, parishioner, and supporter of Catholic education at Sacred Heart.
