Making Mama Hated Diesels was a journey of discovery and recovery. But who knew truckers could be so smart and funny?

MAMA HATED DIESELS

“So many truckers I spoke with initially took the job for the independence. Now, much like the closing of the smaller, independent they’ve had to sell their MAMA HATEDfarms, DIESELS BY RANDAL MYLER & DAN WHEETMAN WITH ADDITIONAL MATERIAL trucks, if they had them, and join the big conglomerates. They’re told when to BY CHARLES WELDON THE STAGE THEATRE sleep, eat, drive, stop—the exact opposite of why they became truckers.” —Randall Myler, co-creator, Mama Hated Diesels

IHOW CAN YOU Is a show about long-haul truckers the first, second or even tenth thing that would jump to mind as a subject for a musical? Don’t answer that. It’s life in a parallel universe. But the question points to the depths of my ignorance before I talked to Randall Myler and Dan Wheetman, co-creators of Mama Hated Diesels. “Randy and I tend to go for shows about underdogs,” Wheetman offered from his home in Seattle, “people you don’t hear much about,” which has included coal-miners, inhabitants of Appalachia, originators of the Blues and now truckers. Myler and Wheetman became acquainted when Myler was putting together the original road company of

U

Quilters at The Denver Center in the early 1980s and needed a fiddler. Someone mentioned that Wheetman, then fiddling for John Denver’s band, might be available. He was. Since then you might say one thing has led to another. “Those tech rehearsals with Dan turn almost into a hootenanny,” Myler offered the day after Christmas from some very snowy spot in New Jersey. “During Hank Williams: Lost Highway [a show that originated with Myler, Wheetman and actor/writer Mark Harelik], the late Ron Taylor would start singing blues songs, out of which we decided to do It Ain’t Nothin’ But the Blues. And at Blues rehearsals in Denver, Danny started singing coal-mining songs, out of which came Fire on the Mountain.

“When we were in Louisville, Kentucky, with Fire On the Mountain, Dan began singing trucker songs from the 50s and 60s. So we talked about it, because the subculture of the American truck driver has fascinated me for a long time; it’s in line with the vanishing America.” rucker songs are in Wheetman’s DNA. His Dad was a long-haul trucker, as are his two brothers. Wheetman himself briefly drove trucks delivering furniture in Los Angeles, but for the most part, this father of five, who toured and recorded with John Denver for seven years, has had an eclectic musical career. Quoting from his bio: “He wrote a Christmas song for Kermit the Frog, recorded a 78rpm with R. Crumb and the

“I’ll tell you: truckers have a wicked sense of humor. Oh, yeah!” —Randall Myler, co-creator, Mama Hated Diesels if they had them, and join the big conglomerates. They’re told when to sleep, eat, drive, stop—the exact opposite of why they became truckers. In New York City, where I live now, big rigs are considered a nuisance; we want their lettuce for our salads, but we don’t want to see them deliver it.” Said Wheetman: “If their trucks stopped rolling we’d stop eating in about three days.” Does Myler ask permission to use the words he quotes? “What I do is talk to the guys who run the truck stops. There’s always a couple of them who’ll say, ‘Oh, you should talk to Ed and so-and-so over there, they won’t mind.’ “Truckers enjoy the interest and the chance to give their side of the story because when Americans think of truck drivers they think Burt Reynolds movies. Usually redneck. I also tell them I won’t use their names because often it’s a composite of four or five conversations that make up one character in the show. This woman trucker I put in the show was the victim of a husband who beat her. She said to me, ‘He thought I was at the Jersey mall and I was at trucker school and one day I was just gone.’ She’s never looked back.” harles Weldon, who’s in the show, drove a truck out of Bakersfield for 12 years before becoming an actor and singer. He’s such a trove of knowledge that Myler insisted the show’s billing state “additional material by Charles Weldon.” “What Randy and I look for in these shows,” concluded Wheetman, “is authenticity. Charles brings a lot of that.” “You should hear what he has to say about the things that happened to him—an African American truck driver heading South…?! And he has a great sense of humor about it all,” Myler added. “I’ll tell you: truckers have a wicked sense of humor. Oh, yeah! They

C

all should be in the show. I never can really use them, but I’ve been lucky through the years to have found actors who feel like people and not actors, if you know what I mean. “It’s a tough life,” he digressed. “So many of the drivers are so smart and funny and they put in enormous hours for their kids and families, whom they hardly ever see. Even if they’re traveling past their town, they can’t park their rig in their neighborhood, so the families have to go to the truck stop to see their Dad. And then there’s that string of ailments—bad backs, bursitis, the window’s open, one arm’s out… We talk about it in the show—with humor, like any job.” n interesting twist: “I wanted some visuals from the road,” Myler said, “slides— projections—looking at the world through the windshield, so I approached Jim Steinberg.” Steinberg, an award-winning professional photographer and Denver Center trustee (he also is one of five board members who run the Harold and Mimi Steinberg Charitable Trust whose proceeds are entirely dedicated to the American theatre), was happy to oblige. So where did the title come from? A trucker song, of course. Myler, singing raucously: “ ‘Mama hated diesels so bad/I guess it had something to do with Dad. The first time I saw her cry/Was when one of them trucks rolled by…’ “Fun, tongue-in-cheek stuff,” he said, unable to contain his laughter any longer. “Clearly, Danny and I will be doing a show on American farms. That could be coming soon, because that intrigues us and the music of that.” n

MAMA HATED DIESELS

Good Tone Banjo Boys, played a fiddle duet with Itzhak Perlman, and worked as an opening act for Steve Martin for a year.” Myler on the other hand is a theatrical documentarian, doing, in his words, “a live Ken Burns/Studs Terkel kind of thing with music.” “Denver’s been lucky for me,” he reflected about his decades-long association with The Denver Center, “because a lot of the shows that began here are still out there.” They include Love, Janis, Hank Williams, Appalachian Strings, Fire On the Mountain, which got several Jeff awards in Chicago and It Ain’t Nothin’ But the Blues, with its two Tony nominations for Myler. e claims he can’t pinpoint what got him started down this path. He was impelled to “not write dialogue myself. Why make up things when they come whole out of people’s mouths? When you hear the songs and stories and the sense of humor and grittiness of these hard jobs, whether it’s coal-mining or truck-driving…” The sentence was left dangling. Through the years, Myler with Wheetman or Harelik visited the Library of Congress where they have many tape recordings of folklorist and ethnomusicologist Alan Lomax. “That,” said Myler, “encouraged me to lay down some of these stories before they were gone.” For Mama Hated Diesels he followed the Lomax example, taking a hand-held tape recorder into the field. “I did the first interviews when I was in Louisville, then at the Alley Theatre in Houston and then at the Arkansas Rep. I’m in New Jersey now and went out yesterday to a truck stop. Many of us think truckers are Southern, but most are from the north and many are women. That’s another thing. “Trucking was considered a man’s job. The women still get some guy over their CB saying, ‘Whatchyou doing on the road? You should be home cooking and raising a family.’ A woman who’d been driving a truck since the 1970s said, ‘I useta never see a woman truck driver on the highway and, suddenly, I was driving north one day and one was coming south; we passed, glanced at each other and almost both ran off the road.’ “So many truckers I spoke with initially took the job for the independence. Now, much like the closing of the smaller, independent farms, they’ve had to sell their trucks,

Kent Thompson Artistic Director

A

rtistic Director Kent Thompson leads the Rocky Mountain West’s flagship professional resident theatre with a renewed excitement and an invigorating challenge to climb to the summit and explore the future of American theatre in the pioneering spirit of the West.     Since the Tony Award-winning company’s opening performance in 1979, Denver Center for the Performing Arts Founder Donald R. Seawell, Founding Artistic Director Edward Payson Call and long-time Artistic Director Donovan Marley nurtured a commitment to classics, the best of contemporary plays and the development of new works.  In his first four seasons, Kent broadened artistic offerings to include more plays by women and Latinos.  The new season will be produced by an expanded and more diverse resident company of artists, craftspeople and managers, reflecting the many cultures and communities of Colorado and the Rockies.     The company’s most exciting artistic endeavor is the expansion of the new play program.  Building upon the past successes of DCTC’s new play program – from Quilters to The Laramie Project, 1001, Lydia, Plainsong, Inana, Dusty and the Big Bad World and Sunsets and Margaritas – Kent is positioning the Denver Center to take the lead as a center of great new American writing for the stage, specifically through the creation of plays that explore what it means be an American in the 21st century.  This new challenge is especially evident in the company’s new annual showcase for its commissioned plays, the Colorado New Play Summit, which featured two world premiere productions.  To insure the futures of the American theatre and the Colorado New Play Summit, new plays by both established and emerging playwrights have been commissioned by the Denver Center Theatre Company this season.

Kent is in his fifth season as Artistic Director of the Denver Center Theatre Company.  In his first four Denver seasons he directed productions of Dusty and the Big Bad World, Plainsong, Irving Berlin’s White Christmas, Amadeus, King Lear and Measure for Measure.    Prior to moving to Denver he was Producing Artistic Director of the Alabama Shakespeare Festival for 16 years.  His production of Macbeth was selected by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), to tour 13 US military bases in the fall of 2004.    In 1991 Kent created the Southern Writers’ Project (SWP), designed to commission and develop new plays that presented 16 world premieres during his tenure. Two of Kent’s major accomplishments since moving to Denver have been the establishment of the Women’s Voices Fund, commissioning and developing of new plays by women, and the Colorado New Play Summit, quickly becoming a premier national festival for new American plays.    He served for eight years on the Board of Directors for Theatre Communications Group (TCG) and as its president for three years.  He has served on peer review panels for the NEA (also chair), TCG, The Pew Charitable Trusts, The Fulbright Scholars Program, The Wallace Funds, The Doris Duke Foundation and The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Bruce K. Sevy Associate Artistic Director and Director of New Play Development Bruce has directed such memorable Denver Center productions as The Voysey Inheritance, A Prayer for Owen Meany, Doubt, All My Sons, Master Class, Mrs. Warren’s Profession, A Christmas Carol, Cat On a Hot Tin Roof, The Little Foxes, Molly Sweeney, Amy’s View, Valley Song, Pierre, Dinner With Friends, and The Cripple of Inishmaan. As Director of New Play Development, he oversees both the artistic and practical components of DCTC’s successful Colorado New Play Summit, including commissions from outstanding American playwrights.     He has directed for Arizona Theatre

Company, Cleveland Play House, Lark Play Development Center, Kansas City Repertory Theatre, Virginia Stage Company, Alabama Shakespeare Festival, Northlight Theatre, San Jose Repertory Theatre, Eugene O’Neill Theater Center, Pioneer Theatre Company, A Contemporary Theatre, Seattle Repertory Theatre, Empty Space and Intiman Theatre in Seattle, the Kimo Theatre in Albuquerque, and Utah Shakespearean Festival.  His popular production of 2 Pianos, 4 Hands has been seen at more than twenty theatres nationally, including DCTC’s successful 2003 production. Charles Varin General Manager     In his fourth season in Denver, Charles is General Manager for the Denver Center Theatre Company. He and his team are responsible for overseeing the financial and administrative activities of the DCTC, creating and executing employment contracts and coordinating the travel, housing and other needs of the Company’s resident and guest artists.  Prior to DCTC, Charles worked for Geva Theatre Center in Rochester, New York.  Edward Lapine Production Manager Ed directs the company’s design, shop and technical areas. His other professional work included positions in technical management at A.C.T. in San Francisco, The Metropolitan Opera, Santa Fe Opera, and South Coast Repertory in Costa Mesa, California.  Ed has worked in film production in Southern California and also worked outside of the arts as a partner in a company developing products in the nanotechnology field. He holds a BA degree from Williams College and an MFA degree in Production Management from the Yale School of Drama. Jeff Hovorka Director of Media & Marketing    A native of Denver, Jeff oversees all aspects of marketing, media and sales for both Denver Center Attractions (DCA) and the DCTC.  He holds a BA in Journalism and English from Benedictine College and has been involved in theatre all his life. Jeff has worked in marketing and public relations for the DCPA for more than 15 years, and his prior professional experience also includes television and advertising work.  Prior to assuming the role of Director of Media and Marketing for the DCPA, he served as the Director (continued)

As a young actor, poet and playwright, he joined The Lord Chamberlain’s Men, one of the most successful acting troupes in London. In 1599, the troupe lost the lease of the theatre where it performed and built its own theatre across the Thames, south of London, which it called The Globe. The new theatre opened in July of 1599 built from the timbers of the old theatre. In 1603, when James I came to the throne, the new king designated the troupe as the King’s Company.    Shakespeare entertained the people of London at The Globe until June 19, 1613, when a canon fired from the roof of the theatre during a performance of Henry VIII set the thatch roof on fire and burned the theatre to the ground. Shakespeare retired from the stage but continued to write until his death in 1616 on his 52nd birthday. To this day, Shakespeare is the most widely admired and well-known poet and playwright in English literature.
