1. OPERATIONAL ACHIEVEMENTS FOR 2006

December 2006

How your generosity is making a difference This year the total number of beneficiaries who were provided services is 414 (271 in year 2005). Daily beneficiaries: 72 (70) children and 47 (47) elderly. Part time beneficiaries: 150 cooked meals + 145 take away food stuff or clothes (as limited by funds). a. Children- Newcomers: we are pleased to advise that with your increased financial support, 21 new children between the ages of 6 and 16 are now coming to Orran on a daily basis. b. Children-Leavers: 19 children have left after numerous years of growing up in the Orran environment. • One has gone into further education, which is being funded by Orran. If you would like to be a personal sponsor for this child, then please refer to our web site for details. • One is a college student, it is no longer convenient for him to come. • One is now working as a car washer. • One is seeking employment as a hairdresser. • Five have left as the welfare of their families improved. • Three can no longer attend as the school shift has changed from morning to afternoon, and one is attending boarding school. • Three live far away and only come to Orran for food and clothes from time to time. • Two children have been placed at an orphanage as their mother continued forcing them to beg on the street. • One has moved to another benevolent organization closer to her home. c. Elderly-Newcomers: we have welcomed 8 new elderly to Orran.

Principal Benefactors Mr. and Mrs. Krikor and Anna Krikorian Mr. and Mrs. Gerard and Cleo Cafesjian Ms. Carolyn Mugar Mr. and Mrs. Gavin and Yaena Boyle Mr. and Mrs. Ralph and Janet Hovannisian

Orran’s Mission is to: • Divert children from the streets and engage them in academic, cultural, and extra-curricular activities • Fight the concept of beggar children as the principal breadwinners of their families • Help families “in crisis” • Assist the lonely and needy elderly • Identify and develop children’s interests and talents toward a working career • Prevent the spread of destitution and begging among Armenia’s children and elderly

“Helping Families in Need” We now take daily care of: • 72 children • 47 elderly and an additional 80 families on a part-time basis only due to shortage of funds. Unfortunately we can only meet the most needy cases due to financial considerations.

2. EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM A Selection of Success Stories- Educational How Orran changed my life When she graduated from high school, Armine Terterian received intensive tutoring at Orran in order to prepare her for the university exam. Armine successfully passed the exams and gained admission to the Yerevan University of Management. Thanks to the generosity of the Rector of the University, Mr. Ruben Aroushanyan, Armine was given a 50% discount on her tuition fee. The fee is being paid jointly by Orran and her family.

This will give me an opportunity to look after my family Nune Ashoughyan has attended Orran since year 2000. She dreamt of becoming a singer, but her family conditions were poor. Thanks to the help of Orran, her dream of taking vocal lessons has come true. As a result of the generosity of Mr. Ohan Varjabedian and his involvement in our child sponsorship plan in 2006, Nune became a student at Romanos Melikyan Music College. From the establishment of Orran Ruzanna Gasparyan has been a part of the Orran family since year 2000. After graduating from school, her family was in a desperate situation and she could not continue her education as she was being brought up by her single parent mother. With the assistance of Orran, she is now a first year student at the State Architectural University, College of Foreign Economic Affairs. Her study has been made possible by the generous donation of Mr. Ohan Varjabedian to our child sponsorship program. Mastership of drawing After their mother’s death, the lives of Hripsime and Andranik Malkhasyan changed. Their father remarried and they

could not get along with their stepmother. Many hours of work with Orran’s psychologist have had a positive impact on family relations which have improved. Orran also assisted in moving the children to Hagop Kojoyan Art school, where in addition to their main classes, they also study the mastership of drawing. With Orran dreams are possible Tatevik Davtyan, a regular beneficiary of Orran, was forced to discontinue her lessons at Orran after she moved to music secondary school. At every opportunity, she still tried to visit her friends at Orran. After graduating from school, she wanted to continue her education, but couldn’t due to her family’s

organized a fundraising event to buy a heater, a refrigerator and a stove for the family. Last year, we brought you the story of the Matossyan family with 3 children. We are pleased to report that the situation has improved. The father of the family, Martoun Matossyan has found work and he is looking after his family. He now pays the rent for their flat and is deeply grateful to Mrs. Verjine Boulghurjian for donating last year’s rent and helping the family get back on its feet.

Future breadwinner of his family After Orran’s establishment, Harutyun Sarkisyan became a beneficiary, as his parents were unemployed. At Orran he received food, clothing, academic and psychological support. During summer camps in Tsakhkadzor, Harutyun shone as a good sportsman. This year he completed 8 year secondary school. With the assistance of Orran, he has now entered into the Military Academy. This formal and academic training will enable Harutyun to provide for his family in the near future. You too can sponsor a child’s further education so he/she can in turn look after his/her parents.

3. SOCIAL PROGRAM A Selection of Success Stories-Social It’s been a long struggle for unemployed father, Avetik Khachatryan. With 3 young children and no regular income, Avetik was forced to seek help from Orran. Now two of Avetik’s children who are over 6 years old, are coming to Orran. They receive assistance of food and clothing and also a contribution for their accommodation with the help of Talin Amirian. The Kankanian family, headed by a single, unemployed mother of five, lost their flat due to construction in downtown Yerevan. Through Orran, the family found donors in Mrs. Stella Derrostamian and Mrs. Klara Moradkhan to sponsor the rent for their new flat. Mrs. Moradkhan also

4. FUND RAISING HIGHLIGHTS FOR 2006 VivaCell Becomes First “Friend of Orran” in Armenia In July, VivaCell became the first Armenian company to join Orran Benevolent Organization as a “Friend of Orran”. VivaCell helps realize the mission of preventing destitution and begging in Armenia. We hope other companies will follow the example set by VivaCell in supporting Orran in creating an “Armenia without Begging”. Friends of Orran We would like to welcome the Bakirtzian family from Canada who have joined us as a “Friend of Orran”. We would like to say a big thank you to all of our “Friends of Orran” who guarantee us financial support of $5,000 per year or more from either a personal donation or from fund raising activities that they have held through the year. The “Friends of Orran” are listed at the end of this Newsletter. Month of Orran – August 2006 For the second consecutive year, the Armenia Marriott Hotel hosted the “Month of Orran” in August. A display of arts, crafts

and souvenirs remained in the lobby of the hotel throughout the month, supported by a selection of local artists and the children of Orran. With the help of volunteers, guests were able to purchase these items or make donations to Orran. The children again played their part on Wednesday afternoons by performing Armenian songs and dances at the hotel’s entrance. A Benefit Dinner for almost 200 people attracted many generous supporters including several Ambassadors, HSBC Bank, VivaCell, KPMG, Nina Hovnanian Treasures of Armenia, Soros Foundation, Armenia Tree Project, Junior Achievement and members of the Orran Board and Staff. The Children’s Jazz Band and the children of Orran both gave musical performances. The theme for the evening was “Armenia without Begging”, which was portrayed in a video clip. Chairman of Orran, Armine Hovannisian and Krikor Krikorian, Major Benefactor and Advisor to the Orran Board welcomed the guests and the evening was hosted in Armenian and English by Nazareth Seferian, the Master of Ceremonies. A very wellknown artist, Arev Petrosyan unveiled an organic glass painting during the evening, which she donated to the live auction. The live auction, directed by the Financial Director of Orran, Antony Turner, was extremely successful and raised $9,125. The Diamond Ring Champagne Raffle, created by Krikor Krikorian raised $5,000. The Shoghaken Folk Ensemble kindly donated the entertainment for the evening with enchanting traditional music which brought the festivities to life on the dance floor. Net income raised from the “Month of Orran” was 8,666,400 AMD or 21,666 USD, a large increase over last year’s figure of 2,015 USD. Our very special thanks go to the following for making Orran’s first Benefit Gala such a success: The Management and staff of the Armenia Marriott Hotel, our Auction Prize Donors: Mr. and Mrs. Krikor and Anna Krikorian, Briony Krikorian, Berringer Blass, Diamond Ring Donors– Mr. and Mrs. Vasken and Karine Artinian; Door Prizes– VivaCell, HSBC Bank, Megerian Family, Armen Carpets, Sharan Crafts Center; Nina Hovnanian, Treasures of Armenia, Tufenkian Heritage Hotel; Master of Ceremonies, Nazareth Seferian; Live band, Shoghaken Folk Ensemble; Painters Alexander Sargsyan and Arev Petrosyan; Photographer, Zaven Khachikyan; Printer, Mr. Vrej Markossyan, Tigran Mets Publishing House. Baptismal Celebration This past summer the Peroomian family celebrated the baptism of Tadeh Peroomian. The family decided to ask their guests to donate money to the children of Orran instead of bringing gifts for the occasion. Orran extends a warm thank you to this family. Four Years of Continued Support Many of our benefactors follow the progress of the Orran Center and the children. Mr. and Mrs. Haig and Caroline Arakelian have been donating to Orran on a monthly basis for the last 4 years. Orran is fortunate and honored to have the support of such a dedicated family. Fiona and Andrew Coxshall at Orran, making a donation from New York Marathon 2006

The British couple have completed 13 marathons between them – in Dubai, London, Moscow, Amsterdam, and now New York. This time they chose to support two charities here in Armenia – Orran and Warm Hearth. They raised US $2,400 for each organization, with donations from friends, colleagues and family in France, England, Scotland, Wales, USA, Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Dubai, Nigeria, and of course Armenia. As Mrs. Coxshall explained, “Knowing we were running to help others less fortunate than ourselves was a wonderful incentive to keep going the full 42.2 km and reach the finish line in Central Park”. Birthday Gifts for Orran Children On the occasion of her birthday, Armine Hacopian of California had a very special request. Instead of accepting birthday gifts for herself, she asked her friends to bring gifts for the children of Orran. The beautiful presents of colorful ski jackets, sweaters, shoes and dresses were then mailed to Orran. The children have been receiving the gifts as presents on their individual birthdays. Thank you to Mrs. Hacopian and her friends for their generosity and thoughtfulness.

5. DENTAL CLINIC OPENING On August 30th, 2006, Orran opened its dental clinic to serve the children and their family members. Housed at the Center, the dental clinic is fitted with state-of-the-art dental equipment and medical tools. The clinic is the gift of the Children of Armenia Fund (COAF), a charitable organization founded by Dr. Garo Armen. In attendance were many honorable guests, including Dr. Garo Armen, Dr. Alice Saraydarian and Ms. Arpi Balian of the Children of Armenia Fund.

6. HOW YOU CAN HELP Once again we are proud to publish our list of donors who have generously donated over a million dollars to Orran’s worthwhile cause. We are pleased also to announce that we are continuing our new fundraising initiatives as highlighted on our web site. These include • sponsoring a child for $1, $2, or $3 per day • sponsoring an elderly at $0.66 per day • sponsoring the vocational training for a child over the age of 15 from a single donation of $70 to a yearly commitment of $400 for 4 years Armine Hacopian and friends at her birthday party in California Orran Benevolent NGO Registered Charity No. 271.171.00931 Board of Directors: S USAN YACUBIAN K LEIN , VAHE K EUSHGUERIAN , A RMINE K. • making pledges for annual donations, no matter how small. It’s only by having these pledges that we can plan ahead with confidence knowing our income is secure in the years to come • remembering Orran in your legacies • become a “Friend of Orran”. To become a friend, we would need guaranteed financial support of $5,000 per year or more from either a personal donation or from fund raising activities that you have held through the year. And you can do all this by making payments directly over the web site.

7. COLLABORATION WITH OTHER ORGANIZATIONS Orran collaborates with many charitable organizations, mainly with those who work with the needy on the street. Orran works closely with COAF, UMCOR, World Vision, FAR’s Child Guidance and Orientation Center, Birthright Armenia, Armenian Volunteer Corps and IREX. There is a Network of charitable organizations and we participate at all seminars of the Network and in other seminars organized by social state organizations.

8. CULTURAL AND RECREATIONAL NEWS IN 2006 Handcraft Project The Handcraft Project was implemented by Mrs. Geghanoush Tovmasyan in March 2006. We had great confidence, in the ability of Orran’s children to communicate through art, song and dance, and create beauty with their own hands. They develop the talents they possess. As a result of the above considerations, we created an Arts & Crafts Center at Orran where the children are able to learn macramé, gobelin (tapestry), carpet knitting, sewing and crochet. Since the opening of the Center, the children of Orran have made lots of handcrafts, some of which were displayed at the sale exhibition at the Armenia Marriott Hotel during the Month of Orran 2006. These handcrafts were so popular that they sold out after one week. The children were working day and night, completing their work at home, bringing them back and asking for other tasks. In appreciation for their efforts, 20% of the sales were given to the children’s families. If any of you would like to sponsor the very modest running costs of this center then please contact us! Saint Sargis Holiday Terndez Celebration, 2006 Orran believes that spiritual and cultural enrichment are also very important aspects of a child's development. On February 14, Orran celebrated Saint Sargis Day. Saint Sargis is considered to be the guardian angel for couples in love and for the young. February 14th is also known as the Day of Purification. It symbolizes the coming of the Lord with fire 40 days after the Birth of Christ. Two of our volunteers from the

Theological Seminary of Echmiadzin, Arthur Mkhitaryan and Arsen Maruqyan organized the festivities. The highlight of the day was jumping over the fire which took place in Orran’s courtyard. In the old days, Terndez was celebrated with “gatas”, Armenian sweet bread. They were cut by placing them on the back of the first born in the family and all were anxious to get the piece with the button inside, which would serve as an omen of good fortune for the year. Great Armenian Writer Hovhannes Tumanyan’s day at Orran Famous stories, “Death of Kikos” and “Barekendan” were performed by 15 Orran children for Orran’s children and their parents as well as guests from the UK and USA. Agency Director, Anahit Papazyan kindly organized a comfortable bus as transportation. This was a truly spiritual experience for the children to be surrounded by such religious history, architecture and artifacts. 9. MESSAGES FROM OUR NEW BOARD MEMBERS Antony Turner — Financial Director and F i o n a C o x s h a l l — S e c r e t a r y . A Message from Our New Board Member Antony Turner — Financial Director I was glad to be invited by Armine Hovanissian to sit on the Orran Board as Financial Director and I willingly accepted. As CEO of HSBC Bank Armenia I feel qualified to help and have

undertaken similar responsibilities elsewhere in the world, including in Brazil and Asia, during my 25 years with HSBC Group. I promise donors to ensure that Orran's finances continue to be properly and publicly accounted for so that the Board can focus its attention on fund raising and serving the needs of the children and elderly. My wife Karen helps me see how and where help can be best targeted; and my 3 teenage children are a constant Antony Turner, as auctioneer at Orran reminder to me of the needs of Benefit Dinner, August 2006 young people growing up. It will be my pleasure to help try to make things a little easier for the children at Orran, too. A Message from Our New Board Member Fiona Coxshall — Secretary I arrived in Armenia in March 2006 with my husband Andrew (KPMG Partner, Head of Audit Southern Caucasus), from Almaty, Kazakhstan, where I’d led a busy life as a freelance English Editor and Vice President of the International Women’s Club. Within a few months I was elected President of the Yerevan International Women’s Club, as well as volunteering at an orphanage. One of the reasons I was drawn to the work of Orran is that while I believe it is important that we nurture the young people of today for the future, we should not neglect the oftenforgotten elderly. To the credit of the founders, Orran uses its facilities to the full, not only helping children and their families but also feeding the elderly, giving them warmth and companionship, and helping them to retain self-worth. So finally, thank you to the Board of Orran and, in particular Armine Hovannisian for inviting me to be a part of an organization that is making a difference to the Armenian people. I hope I will serve you well.
