Foreword

R

ecently, the Government of Indonesia has targeted its development focus for energy security of the country which is in line with RDI focus and work. One of RDI research clusters is “Renewable Energy and Emission Reduction (REER). Previously, RDI has undergone continuously research related to urban, community and tourism resilience to coastal hazards in several at-risk areas in Indonesia. Such research studies are important to strengthen policy and practices in sustainable development of Indonesia for promoting social and economic growth while it is prone to any environmental threats. We believe that coastal system has to be increased for its resilience capacity in order to prevent any losses and ensure maritime development aims. In April 2016, RDI conducted an intensive research study with Coventry University (CU), as part of an MoU conducted between RDI & CU. This complements to previous RDI collaboration with national and international institutions.

Elisabeth Rianawati Director

RDI also opens opportunity to external researchers and interns to be involved in our research to gain wider point of view. Now, RDI has become to be an emerged think thank group in Bandung which has 13 institutional partnership with Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and universities in Indonesia. In 2014, RDI agreed to collaborate with Widyatama University, University of Padjadjaran (Department of Geology), and Institute of Technology National (Department of Environmental Science) in research and other academic activities, such as invited lectures. Such collaboration, we believe, will encourage more research and contribute to current body of knowledge of resilience studies.

To celebrate our ten-year of excellence, we thank to advisory boards, researchers, fellows and organization partners for all of their supports for RDI’s research development.

About

Resilience Development Initiative (RDI) is an Indonesian think tank initiative that focuses on disaster, environmental change and sustainable development. RDI contributes to the body of knowledge on development and resilience research studies. As an organization promoted by research team, RDI presents a dynamic group and creative ideas to approach and solve resilience issues. RDI publishes working papers, conference proceedings and journal papers. RDI members actively attend national and international conferences to disseminate research findings on disaster management.

Vision

Mission

To be a leading institute in research on RDI contributes to the body of sustainable development and knowledge on development and resilience studies in Indonesia and resilience research studies. South East Asia. 4

The history of Resilience Development Indonesia (RDI) originated from Khatulistiwa Indonesia Foundation (KIF) on May 2006 in Palembang, South Sumatera, Indonesia. It played role in research on environmental issues. The first publication was an article published at international journal of Environmental Science and Technology (ACS Publication) in 2007. Then, in 2008, KIF joined and presented a research article at “The 4th Vietnamese and Japanese Students Scientific Exchange Conference” in Kyoto, Japan. In 2009, another article was published at Journal of Physics and Chemistry of The Earth (Elsevier), entitled "Optimization and Validation of Solid Phase Micro-Extraction (SPME) Method for Analysis of Polyclinic Aromatic Hydrocarbons In Rainwater and Storm water”.

History

Along the process, more attention has been given at environmental and disaster issues. Members of KIF developed networking between environmental and disaster researchers in Indonesia called “Belajar Manajemen Bencana Alam” (Disaster Management Study Group) in 2007. Its activities were facilitated by mailing list discussion “[email protected]” (meaning – natural_disaster). In 2010, along with the awareness of disaster education as one of tools for disaster risk reduction, Bandung Disaster Study Group (BDSG) was established. It is a volunteering which its members are mostly youth aiming to raise awareness of disaster risk reduction in community. Until 2013, BDSG has carried out disaster education to several schools in Jakarta region, West Java, and Yogyakarta. Along with the following activities by the previous organizations, there is a consideration about the importance of research role related to disaster and environment. RDI was established as media accommodating researcher who have interest in developing disaster and environment knowledge in Indonesia. The sevenyear experience in developing network, knowledge, and real action in these fields has become an embryo as RDI formation until now. 5

Research Resilience Development Initiative has established seven research clusters. These are designed to enable researchers to better exchange ideas and explore emerging research areas and to work more effectively with other research organizations and the community. These research clusters are our main interest in which teams of researchers from a wide range of disciplines collaborate to bring research knowledge to bear on issues of scientific, social, economic, environmental and cultural importance.

Five sectors of this CSP were scrutinized, namely: Early Childhood Care and Development (ECCD), Youth Economic Empowerment (YEE), Disaster and Risk Management (DRM), Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) and Child Protection and Participation (CPP). These five sectors of Plan Indonesia fits well with the existing research clusters at RDI and therefore RDI researchers from the clusters can contribute to the required expertise for this review. In additon, RDI researchers visited four program units, such as Rembang District, Timor Tengah Selatan District, Timor Tengah Utara District, Nagakeo District and Kupang City.
