Organic World “Organic” has long since become a passion. organicselection by Munich Fabric Start is a forum we created initially for organic fibres and materials providing a tool for the fashion industry to quickly and easily find its way around the jungle of different ranges and certifications. And it has been a great success. This and recent findings on the market prompted us to focus more heavily on the new generation of chemical fibres in the context of sustainability. These include both recycled polyester fibres as well as regenerated cellulose fibres. But that is not where it stops. The need for information goes far beyond fibres and materials. With the new “ECO Village” we offer you an information centre where you can access the know-how of top notch international organisations like the market ecology institute Institute for Marktetecology (IMO), Zürich, the Organic Exchange, New York, bluesign technologies ag, St. Gallen, and Holland’s Fair Wear Foundation, Amsterdam. At this juncture we would like to extend our great thanks to the companies and organisations offering immediate support to our idea. This demonstrates the great significance of this topic that is sure to become even more complex in future. Wolfgang Klinder

Wolfgang Klinder

Make the Change The network of ecological certified textiles manufacturers is growing exponentially. Fabrics are becoming ever more elaborately finished and sophisticated. However, this no longer means a compromise on fashion statement. “News of natural disaster, pollution and social injustice prompts us into action. Prices in the clothing industry have been stable for a long while now if not in fact on the decrease. Inevitably this development negatively impacts the environment and social justice. Sustainable fashion on the other hand does not negatively impact others. It is well known that saving resources and social justice have their price. The additional costs here impact the price of a product. However, acceptance of higher and therefore fairer prices is greater than ever. Changes start with each individual. Take advantage of the consulting and sourcing options at the ECO Village and organic selection at Munich Fabric Start so you, too, can ‘make the change’.” Philipp Langer, it’s organic Handels GmbH

Green, Blue, Orange The Definition Green stands for the eco-balance of natural fibres. The maximum number awarded are three green organic icons. The first is assigned for fabrics whose fibres are predominantly organically grown. The second icon is awarded for yarn spinning, and weaving and knitting of textiles in compliance with ecological standards. The highest level – three organic icons – is only achieved by fabrics that are ecologically flawless from their growing to their dyeing and finishing thereby living up to even the most demanding standards.

Blue confirms the environmental compatibility of synthetics and recycled fibres like Polyester, Polyamide, Cotton and Wool. Regenerated cellulosic fibres made of sustainable forestry wood and run through an ecological production process, get a blue icon as well. It is extremely advanced to have the complete manufacturing process examined in order to save scarce resources as water and energy (via Certified bluesign®). We also award this with a blue icon.

Ideally, fabrics should be produced not only in a clean but also socially compatible way – making it doubly good. There are a plethora of social standards in use now – though they do denote different levels. Five acknowledged seals are permitted here. Exhibitors reaching this benchmark will receive one orange icon. 23

Expert Comments Lenzing AG, Lenzing (A) The upper Austrian fibres group Lenzing is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of cellulose fibres. This firm knows just how sustainable cellulose fibres really are. “For Lenzing sustainability is not just an advertising ploy. A responsible, sustainable approach to the environment has been a concern of the fibre manufacturer Lenzing for decades now. With the increasing difficulty of separating the ‘wheat from the chaff’ in this field Lenzing was the first fibre manufacturer to commission a life cycle analysis* to compare Lenzing fibres against cotton, polyester and polypropylene. The study rated all environmental impacts caused by fibre production and came to the conclusion that cotton production has an enormously toxic impact on fresh water and soil. The soil and water contamination caused by cotton cultivation is about 100 times higher than caused in the production of Lenzing fibres. However, the results of the study only reveal the eco friendliness of Lenzing fibres like TENCEL®, Lenzing Modal® and Lenzing Viscose® as only these featured in the study. The results do not apply for fibres not produced in Lenzing. Due to its different production methods Lenzing Viscose® cannot be compared to other viscose fibres. How can we be sure we have chosen the right fibre? How can we find our way around the jungle of environmental labels? Certificates are important and it is necessary to develop trust on the market. Of note here is the EU environmental label and ISO 14001. The EU label sets limit levels for emissions and prohibits the use of certain chemicals. Information on a firm’s eco management is provided by ISO 14001. Those wanting to be sure should request a life cycle analysis.” *according to ISO 14040 et seq

Expert Comments IMO – Institute for Market Ecology Archaic, natural and currently still exclusive: organic fibres of animal origin “Surprisingly, the majority of organic textile suppliers still focus on organic cotton. This cotton is now widely available and – thanks to enormous growth in the organic cotton harvest – cultivators’ supply in 2009 in fact exceeded demand in the sector. Organic fibres of animal origin lead a shadowy existence by comparison. Does organic wool really come from organic sheep and aren’t all sheep “organic” anyway? The world’s key organic standards are very similar when it comes to plants but differ greatly as soon as organic livestock is involved. For instance, organic standards in animal husbandry have varying requirements on the use of medication: is treatment permitted in the form of preventative vaccination? Is “mulesing” – the surgical removal of skin from the hindquarters of sheep to prevent breech strike – allowed? The approaches here vary depending on organic standards. Take organic silk: here it is important to know if formaldehyde is used to ensure a uniform end to hibernation. EU law allows organic feed and agricultural products to be produced worldwide but these must at least meet EU organic farming regulations. These organic agricultural products also include organic natural fibres (cotton, wool, flax etc.). However, because the further processing of textiles labelled organic is still unregulated in legal terms private standards are offered instead. For the manufacture of items bearing the “GOTS” label (Global Organic Textile Standard) almost all state organic standards are accepted for fibre identification, though in Europe the EU organic farming regulation often serves as the basis here. This means GOTS includes the further processing of natural plant and animal fibres according to strict ecological guidelines. A wide variety of natural animal fibres exist but those wishing to offer organic vicuna, alpaca, yak, mohair or even eri silk for Christmas must sometimes undertake pioneering work in organic production. Whatever the case, this issue is sure to provide much exclusive news as time goes on.” Mechthild Naschke, Head of the IMO Textile Department Susanne Gommeringer, IMO Textile Department

Designer Talk Caroline Raffauf, Urban Outerwear and Rainwear, Cologne Munich Fabric Start: “For years now you have been fighting for fashion made of natural materials – specifically in the highly specialised outer and rainwear segment. What fabrics do you think convince consumers today?” Caroline Raffauf: There are consumers who simply have a personal affinity with natural fibres. These consumers must be offered garments that look modern. Fabrics should have an exciting feel and tell an interesting story. For instance, I have fibres made of 70% cotton and 30% banana fibre in the collection that boast inherent water repellent properties. Especially in outerwear function is essential. For instance, I use natural rubber for coatings. These cater to topical fashion trends very well as the garments boast a slightly used, crumpled look which goes down well. This makes the materials look very animated.”

Caroline Raffauf

Inka Koffke, Designer, Ingolstadt Munich Fabric Start: “Your Organic Couture Line Inka Koffke has been on the market now since 2005. Has sourcing become easier?” Inka Koffke: “Yes and no. The range of materials on offer has definitely grown. We now have a stock of standard fabrics and it is no longer the “first time” with every item. This makes business easier. And it provides a basis from which you can experiment “from the top down”. For instance, recently I at last tracked down some GOTS and IVN Best certified prints. This is really fantastic. I always love the chance to use innovative ideas that underline the modern look of my collection.”
