Welcome

Commencement is indeed a fitting name for this occasion. It is the day in which we recall with great pride the achievements of our graduates attained in their time at Loyola Marymount University. It is the day of dreams fulfilled, of challenges surmounted, and opportunities rewarded. But Commencement also marks a new beginning for our graduates, as we confidently send them out into the world to put into practice the University ideals of education, service, and the promotion of justice. With sincere gratitude, we honor the role that our graduates’ parents, spouses, and families have played in helping them arrive at this day. We hope that no matter where our graduates’ lives may lead them, they will always remember Loyola Marymount University as their home on the bluff. The joyful atmosphere of Commencement draws from its tradition of dignity. To ensure a safe and decorous ceremony, we request that graduates, participants, and guests avoid unnecessary conversation and remain seated during the exercises. Only authorized photographers will be permitted on the stage area during the ceremonies. For Undergraduate Commencement, the Emergency Medical Service stations are located on the north sides of Malone Student Center and St. Robert’s Hall. For Graduate Commencement, the Emergency Medical Service station is located on the south side of Gersten Pavilion. Ushers are available in the event that assistance is required. We request that applause be withheld during the conferral of degrees until each college or school has been acknowledged and all candidates have returned to their seats. Graduates and guests are asked to remain seated until the recessional. It is with pleasure that the Trustees, Regents, President, Faculty, and Alumni welcome all in attendance to the ninety-third Commencement Exercises of Loyola Marymount University.

University History The names Loyola and Marymount have been associated with the tradition of excellence in Catholic higher education for nearly five hundred years and have held a presence in Los Angeles throughout the city’s history.

The Encouragement St. Ignatius Loyola, founder of the Society of Jesus, sanctioned the first of Learning Jesuit boys’ school in Gandia, Spain, in 1545. The Roman College, later

known as the Gregorian University, was founded six years later for the study of humane letters, theology, and philosophy. These institutions set the precedent for the hundreds of Jesuit high schools, colleges, and universities that were established around the world. The Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary have also held a commitment to education since their establishment by Father Jean Gailhac in 1849. Their original Institute in Beziers, France, was founded in 1834 and came to include an orphanage and boarding school for young women.

The Education of the Loyola Marymount University is the successor to the first institution of higher Whole Person learning in Southern California: St. Vincent’s College for Boys, inaugurated

in 1865 by the Vincentian Fathers in Los Angeles. When this school closed in 1911, members of the Society of Jesus opened the high school division of their Los Angeles College. Rapid growth promoted the Jesuits to commence the collegiate department that same year, seek a new campus in 1917, and incorporate as Loyola College of Los Angeles in 1918. Relocating to the present Westchester campus in 1929, the school achieved university status one year later. Graduate instruction began in 1920 with the foundation of St. Vincent’s Law School (now Loyola Law School). The Graduate Division was established in 1950, although graduate work had formed an integral part of the Teacher Education Program during the preceding two years.

The Service of Faith Sisters of the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary were sent to Los

Angeles in 1923 to found their first West Coast school. Ten years later, they opened Marymount Junior College in Westwood, retaining the Marymount name that had been used at their schools on the East Coast and in Europe. The school transferred to a new campus in Palos Verdes in 1960. Eight years later, Marymount College moved again, this time to the Westchester campus of Loyola University as an autonomous college. At this juncture, the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange, who had established a presence in California in 1912, joined the Marymount sisters as partners.

The Promotion of After five years of sharing faculties and facilities, Loyola University and Justice Marymount College merged in July 1973 and formed Loyola Marymount

University. Through this union, the expanded school maintained the mission of Catholic higher education in Los Angeles. In articulating a vision for this unique collegiate enterprise, the Board of Trustees turned to the rich history of the Jesuit educational philosophy as well as to the history of the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary and the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange. They also recognized the variety of religious traditions represented among the dedicated faculty and staff that complemented and enhanced the school’s heritage of Catholic values. 8

Jacqueline M. Dewar, Ph.D. Dr. Jacqueline Dewar received a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from St. Louis University in 1968 and by 1973 had completed both a Master of Science and a Ph.D. from the University of Southern California. She joined LMU in 1973, along with the first freshman class of the newly merged Loyola University and Marymount College, as an assistant professor of Mathematics. At the time she was the only woman among nine tenured faculty in the department. The earliest hand-held calculators were arriving on the scene as she began teaching. Soon they became a standard tool for teaching mathematics, but not without debates about when and how much to use them. In 1977, Jacqueline proudly became the first instructor in the Mathematics department to use a computer for classroom demonstrations-- even when doing so, as she recalls, required wheeling in a teletype terminal and hooking it up to the Data General Nova computer via telephone cord! In 1983, Jacqueline developed a computer literacy component into the Math for Elementary Teachers course so that future teachers could learn the history of computing and how to evaluate educational software. In the early 1990s, she embraced e-mail as a new way of communicating with students. Regarding the Internet, Dr. Dewar has reflected, “The challenges of teaching students to use the Internet appropriately far exceed those of teaching students to use calculators appropriately.” In 1995, through Dr. Dewar, LMU joined nine other universities to form the Los Angeles Collaborative for Teacher Excellence (LACTE), a six-year $5.5 million dollar project funded by the National Science Foundation. She is team leader on a 2004 SENCER (Science Education for New Civic Engagements and Responsibilities) grant from the Association of American Colleges and Universities to support an interdisciplinary faculty team to develop a math core course, based on modeling environmental problems in Los Angeles. Recognized as a Carnegie Scholar in 2003, Jacqueline has excelled in the scholarship of teaching. In the words of Michael Grady, Ph.D., Chairperson of Mathematics, “Jackie’s influence on the mathematical community will live well beyond her active career because much of her professional activity is directed toward ensuring both the quality and the quantity of the next generation of mathematics teachers.” Jacqueline Dewar encourages and promotes all students to achieve excellence, especially in mathematics and the sciences. Her self proclaimed key to success, “Be well prepared, enthusiastic, and capture the students’ interest,” has shaped her career. Her students find her inspiring, both as an educator and mathematician. For all these reasons, Robert Lawton, S.J., on behalf of the students, alumni, and faculty, is proud to honor her with the Frtiz B. Burns Distinguished Teaching Award. 9

The President’s Fritz B. Burns Distinguished Teaching Award This award was established in 1993 to encourage and recognize excellence in teaching at LMU. This faculty member is recognized by her peers and the President for her distinguished teaching, dedication to the University, and commitment to research.

Honorary Degree Recipient and Undergraduate Commencement Speaker

Gregory J. Boyle, S.J. Born in Los Angeles and educated at Loyola High School, Gregory Boyle entered the Society of Jesus in 1972. Within his first year as a Jesuit novice, he was working with youth at risk in the Santa Barbara County juvenile hall. He began his undergraduate education at Loyola Marymount University in 1974, graduated from Gonzaga University, and later earned a Master’s degree in English at LMU. Ordained a priest in 1984, he served from 1986 to 1992 as pastor of Dolores Mission parish in the public housing projects of Pico Gardens and Aliso Village in East Los Angeles. Father Boyle wanted to work in this neighborhood because, he explained, “It is the poorest place we have.” Seeing the staggering problems young people faced, Father Boyle imagined a service center to offer hope to those who found few signs of encouragement. In 1988, he founded Homeboy Industries/Jobs for a Future, a store-front operation that is now the largest intervention program for at-risk and gang-impacted youth in Southern California. With Boyle as executive director, it offers a host of services and a bridge to a new life. The programs have expanded to include job training, tattoo removal, counseling, aftercare for newly released probationers, and four enterprises where young people can learn job skills and develop a work ethic. It is a place, Father Boyle says, that believes in redemption. Jobs for a Future provides an employment referral center that locates gainful employment for at-risk youth. This office matches young people with few skills and little or no work experience with prospective employers of entry-level workers. The motto for this program, “Nothing stops a bullet like a job,” reflects Father Boyle’s belief in the need for work opportunities for every individual who walks into his office. According to Father Boyle, gang involvement is stopped one person at a time by providing meaningful alternatives to “la vida loca,” the violent life on the streets. Since 1999, Father Boyle has been a member of the California Commission on Juvenile Justice, Crime and Delinquency Prevention. The Commission advises the Director of the California Youth Authority on department programs and delinquency prevention funding. Father Boyle draws upon his experience in East Los Angeles, as well as his work with Christian-based communities in Bolivia, and as chaplain at the Islas Marias Penal Colony in Mexico and at Folsom Prison in California. He continues to serve as chaplain to youth detention facilities throughout Los Angeles County where he preaches his message of hope and personal dignity to incarcerated young people. Father Boyle believes, “The truest measure of ourselves as compassionate and civilized human beings is not how lavishly we honor our heroes, nor how tenderly we nurture our children, nor how politely we select our leaders. The real test comes in our treatment of the criminal. If the very thought of that makes us recoil, then we still have much work to do.” Such convictions embody the ideals that Loyola Marymount University holds for its graduates to put their education into service for the benefit of others. Loyola Marymount University is proud to bestow on Gregory J. Boyle, S.J., the degree of Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa. 10

Kevin Starr, Ph.D. Born in the city by the Golden Gate, Kevin Starr fell under the spell of Los Angeles while studying the history of the Golden State. Few authors have written as much or as thoughtfully as he has about the California experience. His academic promise emerged early while a student at St. Ignatius College Prep. upon graduation, he enrolled at the University of San Francisco and received his Bachelor’s degree in history in 1962. After service in the U.S. Army, he commenced graduate studies at Harvard University, where he earned his master’s and doctoral degrees. Throughout his training, he manifested the Christian humanism of Jesuit education: “pietas” (upright character) and “eloquentia perfecta” (eloquent self-expression). True to the Renaissance educational tradition, Dr. Starr exemplifies the scholar as public servant. Returning from Harvard, he worked as executive aide to the Mayor of San Francisco and then as City Librarian of San Francisco from 1973 to 1976. He taught English, political science, and history in several institutions of higher learning before joining the faculty of the University of Southern California, in the School of Public Policy. In 1994, he assumed the posts of State Librarian of California and chief executive officer of the California Library Services Board/Library of California, where he served for ten years. An active journalist, he has been a contributing editor to the Los Angeles Times since 1994 and has authored numerous commentaries on issues facing the city and the state. A gifted writer, Dr. Starr has authored the widely regarded Americans and the California Dream series published by Oxford University Press. In these seven volumes, he has investigated the lure that California exerted on people from across the nation and from other nations. He has recounted their stories in an engaging epoch that ranges from the Gold Rush through the era of Progressive reforms, to the Great Depression, World War II, and up to the early years of the 21st century. With a keen eye for the revealing detail, Dr. Starr has produced a synthesis of the state’s history that places him alongside California’s pioneer historian, Hubert Howe Bancroft. Dr. Starr has interpreted our state’s past so that modern Californians of widely diverse origins might comprehend more clearly the challenges of creating a cohering society. Throughout his career, Dr. Starr has also encouraged scores of young scholars in their efforts to interpret California’s past. He has generously read dozens of book manuscripts and written introductions for these works-in-progress. For Loyola Marymount University, he penned the foreword to Fritz B. Burns and the Development of Los Angeles: The Biography of a Community Developer and Philanthropist, by James Thomas Keane (2000). Scholar and man for others, MAGISTRO SAPIENTISSIMO and NARRATORI Dr. Kevin Starr exemplifies the vibrant tradition of Catholic intellectuals serving society.

FACETISSIMO,

Loyola Marymount University is proud to bestow on Kevin Starr the degree of Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa.

Academic Mace The ceremonial academic mace was first used in 1385 at the University of Vienna, when two ancient instruments, the royal scepter and the battle mace, were combined to form a symbol of the power and authority vested in the institution. An academic mace is traditionally carried in procession and mounted on stage whenever degrees are granted or when the faculty is assembled in formal academic dress. Designs of academic maces vary among institutions but usually consist of a shaft topped with a large ornament depicting the symbols of that school’s traditions and history. The Loyola Marymount University mace has been carried prominently in commencement processions for over three decades and is rich with the history of Loyola and Marymount traditions. The mace was originally commissioned and designed in 1970 by Dr. Renée Harrangue while Academic Dean at Marymount College. Sister Regina Buchholz, S.C.R.H., a lecturer in the Art Department there, crafted the design into the mace used by Marymount College. Loyola University of Los Angeles, although rich with many Jesuit traditions, did not have a mace, and so in July of 1973, when the two schools merged, Donald P. Merrifield, S.J., President of Loyola Marymount University, requested that Dr. Harrangue modify the Marymount mace to symbolically represent the true embodiment of the newly formed Loyola Marymount University. The resulting mace is carried today in the commencement procession. Two faces of the mace depict the University Seal, one uses the Papal Seal, and the fourth includes the American shield of stars and stripes.

12

University Seal The University Seal was created in 1973 by Dr. Renée Harrangue to represent the heritage of Loyola Marymount University in the traditional iconography of an academic emblem. The four fields of the shield represent the four entities whose traditions are upheld by the University.

Top Center The radiating sun symbolizes the combined light of Loyola University and Marymount College coming together as one school.

Upper Right Corner Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary: The Sacred Heart of Mary pierced by a sword, crowned with a cross and encircled by an olive wreath, symbolizing peace.

Upper Left Corner Society of Jesus: IHS monogram and a cross, encircled by an acanthus wreath, symbolizing victory. IHS is the ancient Greek abbreviation for the name of Jesus Christ.

Lower Left Corner Los Angeles Archdiocese: Three schematized angels, signifying the University’s location in the city founded in 1781 as El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Angeles del Rio de Porciùncula— The town of our Lady, Queen of the Angels of the Porciùncula River.

Lower Right Corner State of California: The grizzly bear looking toward the Lone Star, adapted from the original flag of the California Republic, first raised in 1846.

Two mottoes encircle the shield Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam, “To the greater glory of God,” was the exhortation of St. Ignatius of Loyola and is the motto of the Society of Jesus. Tua Luce Dirige, “Direct us by Your light,” is the motto of the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary and is shared by all of its educational institutions in the United States. 13

Academic Regalia The traditional regalia as worn today are derived from the dress of European universities in medieval times, when only the clergy were permitted to attend or teach at academic institutions. The costumes that the Loyola Marymount University graduates and faculty wear at Commencement, now purely symbolic, once served practical functions. For instance, the mortarboard came into use in 1311 when the Synod of Bergamo adapted the pileus quadralus as the official headwear to be worn by scholars throughout their years of study. While the mortarboard has since become strictly a symbol of the graduation ceremony, the Church was actually addressing a more banal issue: ensuring that its clerics’ tonsured heads stayed warm in its cold stone buildings. The chaperon, or hood, was also likely adopted for this reason, although today’s graduates wear it hanging down the back like a monk’s cowl. It was once worn over a short cape called a tippet and had a tail called a liripipe, which was used to pull the hood over the head and wrapped around the throat to keep the hood in place. The liripipe was also used to receive alms. Today, chaperon, tippet, and liripipe are combined into one symbolic garment, whose colors are specific to major as listed at right.

14

The academic gown was modified from the ecclesiastic robes that the medieval clergy wore to class. The common practice was codified at Oxford in 1222 when the Archbishop of Canterbury mandated the wearing of the cappa clausa, a closed robe based, like the pileus quadralus, on a lay style. The tradition of a specifically academic robe spread to Paris, Bologna, and throughout Europe over the next centuries, although most universities in Germany and Switzerland did not adopt the practice. Today, individual European universities continue to establish their own academic costumes. Loyola Marymount University faculty who attended international institutions proudly wear their unique and colorful attire to our commencement ceremony.

The traditions of British academic regalia naturally carried over into most American institutions, but gradually gave way to the wearing of lay fashions in class. It was in the later part of the nineteenth century that students at Columbia, Bryn Mawr, and several other institutions sought to revive the European tradition, at least for use at commencement ceremonies. In 1895, a special inter-collegiate commission standardized a specifically American style and form to commencement costumes. Subsequently, in 1932 and again in 1959, this code was revised and appropriate styles and colors prescribed to meet the needs of the burgeoning academic institutions of this country. But with only subtle differences, nearly all American students graduate in the same caps, hoods, and gowns.

Styling of the robes varies slightly for the bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees, but a somber black is the American standard color. Hoods corresponding to individual majors also differ in length, trim, and shape. The hood lining designates the colors of the institution granting it, hence the Loyola Marymount hood is lined in crimson and blue. The color of the velvet border on the hood designates the major of the graduate’s degree, corresponding with the following scheme: 15

Honors at Commencement Undergraduate degree candidates who have completed at least sixty graded undergraduate hours at Loyola Marymount University and whose cumulative grade point averages are 3.50 or higher (as of February 11, 2005), are denoted with the proclamation “with honors” as their names are called in the Commencement ceremony. The University further distinguishes between three levels of honors by specific grade point averages: cum laude (with honors) for 3.50 or higher, magna cum laude (with great honors) for 3.70 or higher, and summa cum laude (with highest honors) for 3.90 or higher. These specific honors are based on graduates’ actual final grade point averages and are printed on their diplomas. Those graduates listed under Honors Received have been awarded degrees prior to May 2005 and are now participating in the Commencement ceremony. They have already received their final grade point averages, and therefore, the honors listed for them reflect their actual diploma honors. The candidates for graduation listed under Honors Pending do not yet have a final cumulative grade point average as of the Commencement ceremony date, and the honors listed for them are based on their earlier coursework. The honors printed on their diplomas may differ from those noted here.

Prayer of St. Ignatius of Loyola

Take, Lord, receive all my liberty, my memory, understanding, and my entire will, all that I have and call my own. You have given it all to me. To you, Lord, I return it. Everything is yours; do with it what you will. Give me only your love and grace. That is enough for me.

Prayer of the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary

God, Father of infinite love, We praise You! Help us to assume our commitment of fidelity to the mission of Christ in the Church of today as it leads the way in defense of the oppressed. Make us sensitive to the needs of your people. Mark us with the fidelity of Gailhac, our founder. May our presence be a constant revelation of love and joy as was Mary’s —Woman of faith and hope. Make us grow, Lord, in true zeal, capable of transforming the world. May our hearts discover You in the Scriptures, in the breaking of bread, and in the service of others. Strengthened and united in love, we want as individuals and as an Institute to be a testimony to the world that You are Father and that we are brothers and sisters in your Son, Jesus Christ, Amen.
