Introduction to Vacuum Pumps Vacuum pumps are designed to pump air or gases at pressures below atmospheric pressure. Working at below atmospheric pressure facilitates many tasks and research activities in laboratories. These range from simple filtration to complex distillation and many others.

Due to their high flow, deep vacuum capability oil-sealed rotary vane pumps have traditionally been very popular in laboratories as they are capable of handling most pumping requirements. However, due to the fact that vapour will condense in the pump, careful selection of traps, accessories and diligent maintenance is required to ensure trouble-free use. Not all tasks or experiments within the laboratory need high flow and deep vacuum and there are alternative pumping technologies that may be more suitable. Diaphragm pumps

Ilmvac Diaphragm Pump

These are oil-free pumping mechanisms available in two forms, one for pumping air and one for pumping chemicals. A typical use of a chemical version would be for rotary evaporation.

Piston pumps These are oil-free pumping mechanisms that generally have a higher compression ratio than diaphragm pumps, and provide good flow characteristic when used in such applications as filtration, cell harvesting and vacuum oven drying. Not suitable where aggressive vapours or solvents are involved.

Scroll pumps A sophisticated oil-free design that gives high flow rates and deep vacuum of the same order as rotary vane pumps. Your application may require the use of a chemical trap.

Select appropriate approximate vacuum for the application 2. Is chemical resistance required (yes or no)? 3. Select flow rate if appropriate. Approx flow rate should be 1–2 times the volume to be evacuated (litres per min) except for filtration, where there the system is not gas tight, use x4. Examples: a. Rotary evaporation of 5L flask plus condenser plus tubing (probable 12L in total), therefore =12x2=24L/min pump flow rate: b. Vacuum oven of 50L capacity 50x2=100 L/min pump flow rate: c. Filtration of 4x1L flasks on manifold plus tubing (probable 5L in total), therefore 5x4=20L/min pump flow rate.

Bigger is not better as too large a vacuum pump tends to increase the likelihood of condensable vapours bypassing the cold trap and migrating into vacuum pump oil. For instance, a -55°C system condenser will not condense out Acetonitrile vapour causing vapour to condense in oil.

Fluid Aspiration

Ilmvac, BIOVAC 102, Fluid Aspiration System The new BIOVAC 102 is a portable vacuum aspiration system with integrated, chemically resistant, diaphragm pump that is ideally suited for the safe aspiration of biological supernatants as well as remnants of chemical or medical experiments. All elements of the liquid pathway are chemically inert, allowing a wide range of reagents to be used and for sterilisation by Virkon. It is easy to remove small amounts of excess liquids from object slides, petri dishes, well plates etc, through various kinds of pipettes which are inserted into the pipette carrier of the hand piece. The large integrated catch pot is isolated automatically, as soon as the maximum filling level is reached. Between the catch pot and the pump, there is a filter holder in which diaphragm filters of up to 0.22 µm can be inserted allowing bacteria and viruses to be handled safely. The catch pot and the diaphragm pump are connected via fast locking couplings with integral bi-directional isolation valve. The chemically resistant diaphragm pump employed in the BIOVAC has a long life (10,000 running hours) and can be operated by means of a foot switch. ■
