ORCHESTRA ETHICS

It is our aim to encourage the continuity of the instrumentation, which is necessary for the orchestra’s development. To steadily improve the discipline and thereby also the performance within the orchestra, the management has, in agreement with the orchestra representatives, prepared the following guidelines:

A. Joining the orchestra  Requirement: auditions for all participants  A personal tryout can be replaced through the sending in of a DVD or a youtube-link.  Application details and information on the individual project phases can be found on the internet (www.nphm.info/Internal)  Discipline throughout the rehearsals and during the concert tours

B. Membership in the orchestra  The first phase of a new musician is seen as a probation time.  Together, the conductor, the orchestra representatives and the management decide whether the respective musician has passed his probationary period.  After successfully passing his/her trial period, the musician becomes a member of the NPhM.  However, there is no claim on a permanent position in the orchestra.

Membership in the orchestra implies:  The right to vote and be voted as orchestra representative  The Musikwerkstatt Jugend e.V. is endeavouring to make participation for members free of charge, or else paid for on journeys.  Participation in the periodical online-surveys and thereby the possibility to take part in decisionmaking (e.g. choice of program)  In case of cancellation of participation due to force majeure, the musician has to provide an adequate substitute.

Orchestra representation implies:  Orchestra representatives are elected for one legislation period (=1 year: from spring to spring).  In order to be elected, the respective musician must take part in at least two of the three projects within the period.  At least three and at most five members can be elected (if possible from different musical sections). Among the elected representatives a spokesperson is to be chosen, who will present the orchestra’s whishes and concerns to the management (currently: Florian Huber, viola).  Advisory role in musical and organizational issues  Support during the composition of the best possible instrumentation  Commitment to special tasks such as publicity, setting up the stage etc. Last updated: November 2015

C. Rehearsal discipline  The participants are obligated to prepare conscientiously, which they acknowledge in the application form (see www.nphm.info/Internal).  All musicians should be present 15 minutes before the rehearsal.  The tuning is to take place 5 minutes before the beginning of the rehearsal, to ensure a punctual start.  The conductor has the right to ask individual musicians and stands to play on their own.  The musicians must leave the rehearsal room in a tidy state.

D. General guidelines  INSTRUMENTATION: o As soon as the list of participants is complete, the musicians will be allocated their roles (strings: stands; winds: 1st or 2nd etc.) o This order is determined in agreement with the instructors, the management and the orchestra representatives and is to be accepted by all musicians. o The same rules apply to everyone.  REIMBURSEMENT FOR TRAVEL EXPENSES: o Travel expenses within the MVV network area cannot be reimbursed. o Musicians living outside the MVV network area will receive  a reimbursement for travel expenses for every rehearsal block – i.e. once only the journey there and back after presentation of the receipts.  The least expensive travel alternative must be chosen – in case of train rides, only the BahnCard-50-tariff or the budget price will be reimbursed (within Germany max. € 100, within Europe according to consultation)  Accommodation to external musicians can be provided during the rehearsal periods and the concerts. (Contact: Franz Deutsch, Tel: 08178-90018, email: [email protected])  Car drivers will receive a reimbursement of € 0,15 per kilometer. o Please note: the claim on reimbursement for travel expenses expires 6 weeks after the last concert of the respective project.  INSURANCE: o The Musikwerkstatt only provides liability insurance. The participants must take care of their health, accident and instrument insurance themselves.  CONCERT DRESSCODE: o Ladies:  black dress, black skirt (both not too short) or black trousers (no jeans), black top (no plunging neckline), black concert shoes (no boots) o Gentlemen:  dark suit (preferably black), white shirt, bow-tie (if announced), black shoes and socks
