Opportunity Now Advisory Board Terms of Reference Business in the Community is a unique business movement - the largest business-led charity of its kind - committed to building resilient communities, diverse workplaces and a more sustainable future. We work locally, nationally and internationally with members to transform businesses and transform communities. We believe that responsible leadership is the ability to balance doing both. Opportunity Now is the gender equality campaign from Business in the Community.

Our vision Our vision is to increase women's success at work, not only because it is good for business, but good for society too. We know that creating diverse and inclusive workplaces is a business imperative: organisations benefit when they tap into and harness a diverse range of skills and talents. Opportunity Now and sister campaign Race for Opportunity work with more than 200 of the UK’s most significant employers to help them leverage their diverse talent and create workplaces that really work for all.

Our mission Opportunity Now has defined three priorities that are critical to business, to help achieve the potential of people, teams and organisations. They are to create:  A better gender balance for leadership progression Because success in business comes down to having the best people in the right positions  Unbiased recognition and reward for all Making the most of available talent by ensuring it is fairly recognised and rewarded  Agile work cultures that are fit for the future We know that agile work provides business benefits and unleashes individual potential The detailed objectives of these priorities are explained in our Campaigns Aims and Strategy document, and are reviewed by the advisory board at regular intervals.

Effecting social change through business The campaign is led by business via the advisory board, and effects change through working with employers in a membership model. Organisations join the campaign to demonstrate their support for our aims and receive external recognition for this commitment, to benefit from the advice and expertise of our team, to benchmark their progress in gender diversity, and to access an influential network of peers. Maintaining a large body of membership is vital to the campaigns because it is a continuous test of our relevance to business, a clear signal of our impact and support.

The role of the advisory board In the context of Business in the Community, each campaign is led by a team of senior executives who provide strategic guidance to the campaign’s Director, supporting the achievement of agreed objectives as well as providing core funding for the campaign. BITC leadership teams consist of individuals who represent organisations who are at the forefront of investment and development in the relevant campaign area. Our vision is for every business to act responsibly to help build a sustainable future. Our members commit to providing leadership to the movement of responsible business, by innovating and sharing learning and best practice. Members of the Opportunity Now advisory board bring real passion for the role businesses can play in accelerating change for women in the workforce. They should inspire support for creating inclusive work cultures through their own commitment and through that of their organisation. They will be a driving force in the development of the workplace strategy for Business in the Community and the Opportunity Now membership. The Chair will:   

Inspire the advisory board to proactively lead on campaign priorities, working with the campaign team to identify opportunities to increase leadership engagement and commitment to gender equality in the workplace. Lead a dynamic, vibrant and committed leadership team. Engage CEOs and senior business leaders across private and public sectors in campaign activity to drive membership and network growth.

All advisory board members will:  Advise on the overall direction for Opportunity Now, agreeing and overseeing strategic priorities for the campaign.  Influence business, public sector and key stakeholders, acting as ambassadors for Opportunity Now to secure commitment and support from senior leaders.  Lead the campaign publicly through speaking platforms and media opportunities, events attendance, and advocacy of the Opportunity Now benchmark and Awards for Excellence.  Drive the development of key work streams, taking ownership of or contributing to board-led initiatives.

Governance The BITC campaign boards are advisory groups. They do not have a formal role in the Governance of Business in the Community or in the line management of the Campaign Director, which are the responsibility of the Business Community Board (Trustees of the Charity) and the Executive. The chairs of the campaign boards are appointed by the Chair of BITC, with whom they meet annually as a group, and also have the opportunity to submit reports to the Board. Final decisions regarding the direction of campaigns rest with the CEO and Board of Business in the Community.

Joining the Opportunity Now Advisory Board The following are eligible to join the advisory board:  

Executive and senior directors of national member companies; Senior directors of key partner organisations relevant to the campaign.

Seniority is a key requirement for membership. Membership is restricted to one representative per organisation. In order to maintain quality, commitment and continuity, an individual may not send a deputy/substitute to board meetings. Membership is by invitation of the Chair of Opportunity Now and takes account of individual leadership qualities and company commitment. The composition of the board is vital to ensure influence and to further the objectives of the campaign. Board members represent their employing organisation. When a board member leaves their employer, they relinquish their seat on the Opportunity Now board and the employer proposes a replacement.

Cost and time commitments Campaign board member organisations make an annual contribution of £16,000 to the core costs of the campaign and its staff; this contribution includes Champion membership. There are four in-person campaign board meetings per annum (dialling in is discouraged), and the Chair also facilitates between two and three phone calls per annum between NEDs. Where board members volunteer to take ownership of or contribute to an individual work stream, they may also be required to attend or dial into subgroup meetings. We also encourage board
