OPPORTUNITIES IN THE INDIAN OIL AND GAS SECTOR BUSINESS SWEDEN June 2015 India
BUSINESS SWEDEN
1
SUMMARY OF ANALYSIS India is the fourth-largest consumer of oil and petroleum products in the world after the US, China, and Japan The country is heavily reliant on the import of crude oil, growing at 7.7% CAGR over the past 7 years. 80% of crude oil demand is met through imports and rest from local production. During the last 7 years, natural gas imports has witnessed a growth of 8.5% CAGR, where as the local production of natural gas has been volatile in the range of 32 to 52 BCM per year. Production is well balanced between onshore and offshore for crude oil. In contrast, 75% of natural gas is produced offshore. India has 762 MMT (0.3% of the world’s) recoverable reserve of crude oil, and 1,427 BCM (0.7% of the world’s) recoverable reserve of natural gas. These reserves should be sufficient to meet 20 years of crude oil production and 30 years of natural gas production with the current production capacity. Indian private companies play a prominent role during the exploration, well-development and refining stages of the oil and gas value chain. Crude oil and natural gas pipeline infrastructure is dominated by public sector companies, and private firms own 10% length of this infrastructure. Despite allowing 100% Foreign Direct Investment in exploration, refining, pipeline, and marketing of oil & gas, there are limited number of foreign companies operating in India, where the British (including Scottish) and Dutch companies are predominant international players. Vast opportunities exist for Swedish companies to tap-in across the oil and gas value chain from setting up of refinery infrastructure, pipeline transportation, providing professional services, to Shale gas exploration, and technology partnership in upstream. VAST OPPORTUNITIES EXIST FOR SWEDISH COMPANIES IN INDIA ACROSS THE O&G VALUE CHAIN
Refinery infrastructure
Professional services
Equipment companies
Swedish companies can invest in export-oriented infrastructure for refinery, including export terminals
Swedish professional service firms can provide advisory and financial services across the oil and gas value chain
48% of India’s sedimentary area is yet to be explored, along with the setting-up of the city gas distribution network. This offers untapped opportunities for Swedish equipment companies
Pipeline transportation
Technology partnership in upstream
Shale exploration
Swedish firms can invest in pipelines, as only 35% of petroleum product movement happens by pipeline in India, in contrast to 60% in the US and other developed markets Opportunities exist for Swedish companies with technical expertise, in exploration of deep & ultra-deep water oil & gas resources
India has recoverable shale gas resources of nearly 96 Trillion cubic feet, which essentially provides major opportunities for Swedish exploration firms
INVESTMENTS WORTH USD 600 BILLION IS EXPECTED DURING 2012-30 ACROSS THE O&G VALUE CHAIN SOURCE: FICCI, MAKE IN INDIA BUSINESS SWEDEN
