PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Dear Parents, We are really rolling this term with a lot of good things happening and some hard work starting to bear fruit. On the core business front we have used the extra teacher that we were given because of our increased enrolments to put in place an intensive program for our Year 2 students to improve academic standards before they move up to Year 3. All of the teachers in the Stage 1 team have contributed to this and are working very hard to implement it. Very importantly the program will continue into those difficult weeks at the start of next year when we must go into “holding pattern” which means that we stay in our 2012 classes while we establish just how many children we have and what our class structure is going to be. Once we move into our new classes the program will transition to the teachers on Year 3. Our numbers are now 716 which is far more than even the most optimistic predictions. We have 87 confirmed Kindergarten enrolments and I am told to expect between 10 and 15 or so on top of that. I should emphasise that we are not accepting enrolments from outside our school zone and have already had to decline to accept about 15 children from other areas. I have already been in discussions about the supply of another demountable classroom so hopefully we will not have to wait as long as we did this year. Last week I wrote to parents of Year 5 students outlining a proposal to introduce sailing as a school sport in term one next year. I’ll be extending the offer to Year 4 parents shortly so that it would be open to Year 5 and Year 6 children in 2013. I’m seeking expressions of interest to see if it is feasible to do it. The cost is a lot less than I anticipated so I’m confident that this will happen and I’ll be very satisfied if I can share this great sport with some of our children.

As you are no doubt aware our canteen has a new improved menu and it is now possible with online ordering to organise lunches well in advance and without the need to find change. I’m starting as October draws to a close to think about what has been done in 2012 and I think we have had a pretty good year.

PS. Not related to school. If anyone is interested in seeing a World War 2 Catalina flying boat, the Catalina Festival is on Saturday 3rd November at the old air force base at Rathmines, near Toronto on Lake Macquarie. A restored Catalina is scheduled to land at 10.30am, it will then taxi up the original war time ramp onto the hardstand where it will be open to the public. It takes off again at 3pm. These are very impressive aircraft and I guess not many of our children have seen a big seaplane land on the water. There’s a small admission charge.

||INSIGHTS|| by Michael Grose - No. 1 parenting educator

The power of the kitchen table “It’s no coincidence that those countries with strong food cultures also have strong families. When people eat together they talk. You can’t help but talk when your behind is anchored to a chair.” The kitchen table is a parent’s best friend. It’s where conversations occur. It’s where thoughts are aired, complements are given and food is shared. If you want to get a window into a child’s world then you need to sit around the kitchen table with him or her. When I was a kid mum always made sure there’d be some food on the table when I came home from school. As soon as I came through the back door I’d throw my school bag in my room and come and sit down at the kitchen table to eat. Mum used to sit at the kitchen table and have a cuppa at the same time. She always did..... or it’s seems like she did. My most vivid memories are sitting around the kitchen table with her. It’s no coincidence that those countries with strong food cultures also have strong families. When people eat together they talk. You can’t help but talk when your behind is anchored to a chair.

People attach emotions to locations. People attach feelings to different places. I’d like to think my family links happy, joyous feelings to our kitchen table. After all we’ve had plenty of birthdays, Christmases, fantastic dinners, big breakfasts and countless other gatherings around our kitchen table. The kitchen table anchors my now adult kids back to their childhoods and gives them a sense of belonging. That’s why the kitchen table is the first place they go to when they come home for a visit. They feel at home again. On my trips to England I’ve noticed that the English don’t use the kitchen table like Aussies do. In fact, about a third of English homes don’t have a kitchen table at all. Many families eat in shifts and in front of the television. English educators are concerned. They want their parents to talk to their kids more. They know when parents talk with their kids they enrich their vocabularies, and better still, influence their thinking. They know that the kitchen table is a powerful ally in creating talk between the generations. That’s why they are encouraging people to sit at the kitchen table more.

The power of the kitchen table is immense. Don’t underestimate it or underuse it! You can build kids’ confidence around it. You can build their character around it. You can build resilience too. Better still, you can build a family around the kitchen table and that’s quite a feat.

Making mealtimes memorable

1. T urn your evening meal into a night out at home. Once a week dust off the best knives and forks and set the table in style complete with serviettes and candlesticks. Try waiting on your family restaurant style and impress on kids that they can use their best manners. 2. Serve from the table. Turn a simple meal into a communal activity by putting serving plates on the table, and plating up from the kitchen table. Kids usually stay longer when food is served this way. 3. Any excuse for a celebration. Look for reasons to celebrate with a sit down meal where everyone is expected to join in. Birthdays, term break-up days or a great school report are worth recognizing in this way. Published by Michael Grose Presentations. All rights reserved.
