IFC – a deliverable of buildingSMART International buildingSMART Goal Enable full benefits from digital ways of working in the built asset industry Journey  Standards Body of Reference  Vibrant Chapters  Quality Mark in demand

Standard body for open BIM  Development of IFC (open BIM Data Standard)  Certification of IFC Interfaces (deployment)

Model View Definitions There is no single “all-in-one” IFC implementation the “Full IFC” is a repository of schema definitions for all disciplines and life cycle the “IFC Model View Definition” is a subset, that satisfies one or many purposes

Any IFC implementation implements 1..n Model View Definitions

Essentials to know

IFC is about exchanging data - it is not an application format IFC does not replace BIM tool formats IFC is not a database

IFC enables the exchange of BIM models between different disciplines to coordinate and

reuse building information

Some facts about development efforts so far about 50 person/years of total development (in 15 years)  About 2-3 person/years per year direct development effort  Time spend in buildingSMART International MSG (50% volunteered)  More spend by external reviewers, project development teams, bSI community

Specification work is the tip of the iceberg  Software development efforts (about 150 applications supporting IFC)  Open BIM guidelines, training, education, etc.

Single goal: secure IFC as the true openBIM standard worldwide
