The advantages of active guidance markers High visibility Markers that emitting their own light can be seen from a greater distance than passive reflectors, thereby giving drivers advance warning of bends or hazards
Delivery of intense, focused beams of light Active markers are able to penetrate water and delineate roadways in rain or fog and during night or day.
Clear guidance Markers are positioned directly in drivers’ line of sight so they instinctively follow the line of lights
Programmable Markers can be controlled to remain invisible until activated, or can be made to flash for increased driver awareness.

Case studies Bus lane Bus lanes separate buses from other traffic, enabling them to bypass traffic congestion, reducing conflict between buses, bikes and general traffic. Bus lanes also mean buses have shorter journey times and can keep to their timetables. Bus travel therefore becomes smarter and faster. To discourage drivers from incorrectly using the bus lanes a peck times local traffic Authorities issue heavy fines to eligible vehicles for noncompliance. Even with street signage bus lane infringement penalties has conditioned drivers not to use bus lanes at any time and this effect is having a negative influence on the traffic flow and management.
To counter this effect a bus lane (Auckland New Zealand) trailed ONROADLED markers at 10 m spacing’s down the bus lane. After 2 years traffic studies have concluded that without LED markers 40% non-compliant traffic (i.e. 40% of vehicles driving down the bus lane when the lane was closed to regular traffic). With ONROADLED markers non-compliant rate dropped to 7%.

Case studies Cycle paths The ONROADLED solution combines road markers and an input signal from the traffic controller. As the cyclist rides along, a running green light indicates that by keeping up with the light, the rider will reach the next set of traffic lights during the green phase. Should these LED lights turn off, cyclists know that they will not reach the next set of traffic lights during the green phase and can be slowing down accordingly, without risking having to jump the crossing at red. Speed and time intervals can be adjusted as needed.

Case studies Dangerous curves The ONROADLED solution warns drivers of an upcoming dangerous corner or a series of bends. A detection tool is analyzing the speed of a vehicle when approaching the dangerous curve. ONROADLED markers light up and provide a dynamic warning sequence to slow down the driver if approaching the dangerous area too fast. The resulting function of the system can be customized to the need of the specific road situation. Dynamic functions can be added to ONROADLED system that increase the marker brightness or markers start flashing if the vehicle does not yield to an appropriate speed

Case studies School zone Children are high risk pedestrians near roads. Young children especially are unaware of the danger, and risk increases considerably when children are in groups. Dense foot traffic in school zones, children having fun together, and cars travelling at speed are a potentially fatal mix of factors – school zones are high risk. ONROADLED on-road lighting system warns drivers and pedestrians alike. Alerted drivers’ awareness increases - The Driver has improved awareness of potential danger and they will reduce speed.

Case studies Tidal flow • A reversible lanes (tidal flow) is a lane in which traffic may travel in either direction, depending on certain conditions. Typically, it is meant to improve traffic flow during rush hours, by having overhead traffic lights and lighted street sign notify drivers which lanes are open or closed to driving or turning. • Reversible lanes are also commonly found in tunnels and on bridges, and on the surrounding roadways – even where the lanes are not regularly reversed to handle normal changes in traffic flow. The presence of lane controls allows authorities to close or reverse lanes when unusual circumstances (such as construction or a traffic mishap) require use of fewer or more lanes to maintain orderly flow of traffic.

Case studies Left hand turn During the permitted left turn green phase at intersections on divided highways, if the median of the major road is relatively wide, the simultaneously turning vehicles in the opposite left-turn lane frequently block the drivers’ view. This situation may contribute not only to a serious safety problem due to drivers misjudging gaps of opposing through traffic, but may also lead to needless delays for the left turning traffic since those cautious drivers reject physically adequate gaps.

Case studies Railway platform and crossing “Accidents at level crossings reportedly account for a quarter of all railway deaths” Level crossings, intersections where roads and rail tracks cross one another, are a common sight on railway networks around the world. Despite the ubiquity of these at-grade crossings, most authorities agree that they are an outdated relic of a bygone era when both rail and road transport operated at much lower speeds, and lower volumes of traffic, than they do today.

Case Studies Road of the Future The ONROADLED system has been designed to further improve the traffic flow by adjusting the speed behavior of the individual vehicles. The ONROADLED Smart Mobility Vehicle application calibrates each vehicle on the road. Each passing vehicle will be given an advisory speed by matrix signs plus their own unique LED on-road markers to follow that will form a green wave. If the advised speed is respected, again the green light at the next traffic light in the through direction is guaranteed.

Case studies Crosswalk ONROADLED markers improve driver awareness of pedestrians The ONROADLED markers provide a high-contrast vehicle guidance and warning system both night and day. In every community there are busy pedestrian crosswalks — near schools, malls, business parks, hospitals, recreation centers and retirement homes. In many of these locations full traffic signal systems are impractical or unaffordable. Cost effective SAFE-2-WALK equipment can be installed independent of a complete traffic light system to improve pedestrian safety.

Case studies Tunnels 160 tunnels installed – 30,000 LED markers ILLUMINATION DIRECTIVES - The EU Directive 2004/54/EC requires lighting as well as illuminated signage as a mandatory standard for road tunnels over 500 m.
Since 2004 many tunnels has used both hard wired as well as inductive powered LED marker systems. The overall time life performance of LED marker would favor inductive powered system. Therefore some authorities are specifying only the use of inductively-powered lighting for on-road tunnel lighting.
