SET SAIL Awe-inspiring yachts that rule the waves.

How do you make the world’s most powerful road car even more extreme? Easy: you cut the top off. That’s if the prospect of travelling at 375kph with no roof doesn’t scare the living daylights out of you. Bugatti said it was only days after the GrandSport went into production that enquiries started pouring in, asking the company when it planned to release a convertible version. Well, here it is.

“Our team has managed to transfer the world’s most powerful car engine to the open-top sports car while taking all vehicle dynamics and aerodynamic parameters into consideration”

If looks could kill, this vehicle would be wanted for vehicular manslaughter. The F12berlinetta’s shapely curves have been given a little more lift, with higher arches on the profile view, but under the cover lays a brand new superefficient engine built by Maranello. The company says it’s the fastest Ferrari ever built, and with all that engine under one hood, we’re inclined to believe them.

Maserati’s new Gran Turismo Sport is a thing of beauty. Technically superb and visually dazzling, the chunky haunches make it look like a big cat on the prowl, and the trademark airflow vents on the side remind you that this machine is built for speed. New headlights at the front and back add to the aggressive appearance, and the throaty roar of the 4.7litre V8 has other cars running for cover. We love it.

As talk of summer begins, car-makers are lining up a catwalk of super sexy softtop vehicles that promise to bring drivers even closer to the environment. In Italy, this means it’s time to drop the roof and drive around the city admiring your admirers. The twoseater Aventador J is just about the most fun you can have with no top on. Unfortunately they only made one model and it was sold for a staggering US$2.8 million.

Interview

Interview

The pursuit of happiness Nicholas Sparks didn’t plan to become a best-selling author, but in the journey of life, it takes courage to avoid the path of least resistance Interview: Caitlin Cheadle

N

icholas Sparks wrote his first novel at the age of 19 while studying business finance at Notre Dame University. It didn’t get published, but that didn’t stop him. At age 28, while selling pharmaceuticals in Greenville, South Carolina, he penned The Notebook in his spare time. A literary agent got hold of it and offered to represent him, and the rest is history. The Notebook made the New York Times best-seller list in its first week of release and became an international best-seller, later achieving box-office success when it was turned into a film. Several more of his best-selling novels have since been made into films including Message in a Bottle, A Walk to Remember, Nights in Rodanthe, Dear John, The Last Song, and The Lucky One. Nicholas’ career and charity work have taken him all over the world, and he’s learned a few valuable life lessons along the way. Here, he shares them with Destinations of the World News. You travel all over the world; what are your favourite travel reads? Travel reads are fantastic if done well, but honestly, I find that I prefer novels or non-fiction work that allows me to feel the atmosphere of a place, while still being highly entertaining. A novel like One Day by David Nicholls – which has nothing to do with travel at all – allowed me a glimpse into the life of singles in London, for instance, while Ian Rankin helps me learn a bit about Edinburgh. There are countless other examples, obviously, but I can say that after reading such novels, it makes my later visits to such places a bit more interesting. It’s as if I’ve added another chapter, so to speak, to a guidebook. What have been some of the most memorable places you’ve visited? I loved Machu Picchu in Peru, Lalibela in Ethiopia, and both Camp Mombo and Jack’s Camp in Botswana were amazing. I’d happily go back to visit all three. Everyone should also try rafting down the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon, snorkelling or

scuba diving on the Great Barrier Reef, and visiting the Khumbu Valley in Nepal. All are fantastic places and these have been among my favourites. What would you say to those who want to write but are afraid to follow that path? Fear can be a wonderful motivator, especially if one is both diligent and terrified of failure, which often leads to a better book. But if someone thinks he or she wants to write, the only way that person can be sure is to actually start putting pen to paper. How do you overcome writer’s block? Writing has never come easily to me. Someone once said that writing is a concentrated form of thinking, and original yet quality thinking is always hard. Every sentence in my novels is probably read – and possibly rewritten – five or six times before a reader ever sees the final product. As for blocks, they are common, if only because the ‘perfect’ idea – whether regarding a character, a plot point, an event, a description, a setting – is seldom obvious. The key is to keep thinking and brainstorming, and hopefully an idea will eventually come to you. When you were in pharmaceutical sales, did you ever feel like you were heading down the wrong path? I felt like I wanted to chase a dream instead of simply living from day to day, but at the same time, I wasn’t willing to quit my job, if only because I still had bills to pay. So I’d work during the day and write in the evening, and I was fortunate that it all worked out. Have you been pleased with the way all the film versions of your books have turned out? My input varies from film to film. Sometimes I’ll write the screenplay, other times I’ll produce, other times I’ll do both and still other times I simply sit back and let others do the work. It largely depends on my schedule, but I always work with people I trust and I think that’s one of the main reasons why the films

have been a success. I’ve been thrilled with all of them. Why is your charity work so important to you? My wife and I have always believed that it’s important to give back, and we’ve always been passionate about education. We’ve supported universities, public schools, and have founded a private school in our hometown. The Nicholas Sparks Foundation is a combination of our passion to be generous, while stressing the importance of an education that better prepares students for life in the 21st century. It’s no secret that the education system needs work, especially in our region of the United States, and the Foundation was established to help other schools improve their curriculum, especially in the areas of international relations, mathematics, and the ever-changing digital world. Love is a strong theme in your novels. Why is that? I write novels about people who face obstacles in life, whether personal or professional. To make the stories feel real – to bring the characters to life – it’s important that the characters feel all the emotions of ordinary life. Love, obviously, is part of that. How important is it to interact with your fans? It’s very important to me, and I do my best to keep in as much contact as is reasonably feasible. Where do you find particularly inspiring to write in? Anywhere. But generally, I like to write when I’m at home. How do you maintain a work/ life balance? It’s hard for me, just as it’s probably hard for most people. I suppose the best way to think of it is one of the oldest rules of all: when it’s time to work, you work. When it’s time to relax, you relax.Q www.nicholassparks.com
