Online Banking Authentication

What is Increased Authentication? Increased Authentication is an additional layer of security to help prevent phishing scams for the online banking login process. Phishing is the act of attempting to acquire information such as usernames, passwords, and credit card details (and sometimes, indirectly, money) by masquerading as a trustworthy entity in an electronic communication. Increased Authentication requires the user to select an image, a security phrase and 3 security questions. This ensures that you are truly on the FirstOntario Online Banking website. During the enrolment process, you will: •

Pick an image from a collection of images.

Type a security caption.

Select 3 challenge questions.

Register the computer (optional) – makes this computer a ‘trusted’ computer.

What are the benefits? We are committed in our efforts to safeguard Members from fraud and online crime, and there are many benefits to Increased Authentication, including; •

Providing an additional layer of security to prevent online phishing scams.

Proactively protecting you against financial fraud.

Verifying your identity, making it harder for an online thief to gain access to your account.

Setting-up your home computer to identify itself to the banking system, making it nearly impossible for anyone other than you to access your information.

Use of authentication pictures and phrases that “phishing” or mimic sites will not have.

Are answers to the security questions case sensitive? • No, answers to the Increased Authentication security questions are not case sensitive. What is my PAC? • Your PAC “Personal Access Code” is the password you have been using to sign into online banking. What if I do not see the correct security image and phrase or I see an incorrect security image, but a correct security phrase? • We recommend that you clear your browser’s cache each time you log out of and finish your online banking session, and re-launch a new browser to start the session again.
