2016 Season

Iris Mascagni

Iris, explores themes of innocence and desire in turn-of-the-century Japan, when the titlecharacter is kidnapped by the lascivious Osaka, and his friend, a brothel keeper. The follow-up to the composer’s highly successful Cavalleria Rusticana features many wonderful melodies, whilst monumental choruses add to the high musical drama. At 7.30pm

La bohème Giacomo Puccini

La bohème has been extremely popular with audiences since it was first performed in 1896. It is a boy-meets-girl love story between a starving poet and his neighbour, a poor seamstress. Atmospheric, concisely plotted and featuring some of the most famous arias and duets in opera. At 7.30pm

La Cenerentola Rossini

With inherently comical characters and gleeful music, Rossini’s 1817 opera is a romantic comedy. Underlying the frivolity, lies the moral of the Cinderella story. The heroine is lifted out of hardship, not by the touch of a fairy-godmother’s wand but by her own kindness: she earns her ticket to the ball. At 7.30pm

Die Fledermaus Johann Strauss II

Die Fledermaus was Strauss’s third operetta for Vienna’s Theatre an der Wien. Based on a popular French vaudeville comedy, its story tells of a practical joke spinning out of control. High-spirited, with numerous waltz and polka themes, audiences have loved it since its premiere in 1874. At 7.30pm

The Queen of Spades Tchaikovsky

Based on a groundbreaking story by Alexander Pushkin, Tchaikovsky’s macabre masterpiece follows the doomed love story of an army officer and the grand-daughter of a celebrated Countess. Discovering that the Countess possesses the secret to winning at cards, the officer falls victim to obsessive greed. At 7.30pm
