Every fan of music will find something here, and those seeking additional entertainment will have the chance to enter competitions, with attractive prizes for the winners. The Malbork Festival is a family event, with plenty of activities for both children and adults.

Events in Malbork

Star acts: BUDKA SUFLERA (Friday 25 June) and PATRYCJA MARKOWSKA (Saturday 26 June) Venue: town centre

8–11 July Town Celebrations of Grunwald Year 2010 – The 8th International Festival of Antique Culture For the eighth time, Malbork will become a town filled with the sounds of antique music, and with mediaeval merchants and townspeople walking the streets in the costumes of the period. This year the Festival will be combined with the celebrations of Grunwald Year. The festival always opens with a colourful parade through the town streets. A mediaeval fair, knights’ camp, craft workshops and antique music concerts are just some of the attractions that await everyone who comes to Malbork on the days of the Festival. The event will end with a Gala Concert featuring festival prizewinners and invited guests.

14 August Malbork Kulturalia – Meetings with Opera and Operetta (rock opera/ musical/concert) This event, which has become a regular feature of the town’s calendar, attracts huge interest not only from Malbork’s residents, but also from the tourists visiting the town. This year, for the seventh time, spectators can enjoy outstanding vocal and musical performances from leading artistes. The unique atmosphere provided by the town and the Gothic walls of the Teutonic fortress form a perfect backdrop to this cultural event. All events at: www.malbork.pl or www.visitmalbork.pl

15 July Main Celebrations of Grunwald Year 2010 The climax of the national celebrations of Grunwald Year – the 600th anniversary of the Battle of Grunwald – attended by the President of Poland and invited representatives of the states which took part in the coalition against the Teutonic forces, all of whom will come to Malbork on this day. Tourists visiting the town will find many attractions, and the main feature of the programme will be an openair musical and theatrical show featuring Polish stars, with allusions to Jan Długosz’s work „Banderia Prutenorum”.

Siege iege of Malbork

Siege of Malbork, 22–25 July The open-air Siege of Malbork event, taking place this July for the eleventh time, is an event which combines the historic atmosphere of the town and Europe’s largest mediaeval fortress with active entertainment and education. The event is one of the largest of its type in Poland, and its fame has long ago spread beyond the country’s borders. Its main theme is the events of 600 years ago, when the victorious armies of King Władysław Jagiełło marched from the battlefield of Grunwald to attempt to take the Teutonic castle in Malbork. During the event Malbork welcomes knights’ fraternities from all over the country, as well as foreign teams, a total of 350 people all taking part in a spectacular reconstruction of the historical battle of the castle siege, enriched with spectacular effects. Numerous additional attractions within the castle will reinforce the mediaeval atmosphere: a knights’ battle camp, a mediaeval crafts fair, equestrian displays, shows of ancient dancing, all accompanied by music of the period, and with knights’ taverns offering refreshments. www.oblezenie.pl www.oblezenie.malbork.pl On Saturday 24 July we invite you to an evening concert following the Siege of Malbork event. The star of the evening will be the group AFROMENTAL.

7 August MAGIC MALBORK After the Siege of Malbork, the second largest open-air event held in Malbork. The main feature of Magic Malbork is a unique evening open-air spectacle taking place against the background of the castle walls. The show creates an unparalleled atmosphere combining various art forms: music, dance, acrobatics, pictures and light. The stars of the show are the Fly Cube acrobatics group, featured in the “Poland’s Got Talent” television series, who will perform breathtaking acrobatic feats at great heights. They will be accompanied by several dance groups, musicians, laser shows, lights and pyrotechnic effects – all of which entranced the many thousands of spectators who came to see the Magic Malbork show last year. The audience was hugely impressed by the music, which creates an atmosphere and ideal background for the spectacular scenes played out in front of the spectators. The show ended with a firework display.

Mennonite cemetery in Stogi

TOURIST TRAILS

A cemetery whose history goes back to the 17th century, one of the most beautiful of its type in Europe.

The Mennonite Trail This trail links sites connected with the history of settlement in the Żuławy region, including that of the Mennonites. The most valuable monuments on the route are the excellently preserved settlement layouts of villages, often remaining unchanged since mediaeval times. Among architectural objects of interest are the arcaded houses, whose form reached a peak of development in Żuławy, and the so-called Dutch homesteads. There are numerous Gothic village churches, some ruined, some surviving. Another treat is the many hydraulic engineering structures: canals, locks, dykes, and raised and rotating bridges. The central point of the trail is the Żuławy Museum in Nowy Dwór Gdański, opened in 1994, which offers interesting ethnographic and historical collections enriched with exciting exhibitions, the largest of which tells the story of the Mennonites. In one of the rooms is a lapidarium with restored gravestones from nearby Mennonite cemeteries. Another focal point on the trip is the cemetery in Stogi, the largest in Żuławy, where around 100 Mennonite steles have survived, some of them being true masterpieces of sepulchral art.

Copernicus walking trail Church in Stara Kościelnica The Church in Stara Kościelnica was built in Gothic style in the 14th century. It has a flat wooden ceiling, 17th century high and side altars, and an 18th century pulpit.

Arcaded House The 17th century arcaded house in Bystrze is an example of the Dutch architecture of the Żuławy region.

Sztum Castle Sztum Castle was built by the Teutonic Knights, probably on the site of an earlier Prussian tribal fortification, in 1326–1331.

Malbork is the highlight of the Polish Gothic Castles tourist trail. Beginning in Bytów and passing through Gniew, Kwidzyn, Sztum, Malbork, Ostróda, Nidzica, Olsztyn, Lidzbark Warmiński, Nowe, Kętrzyn, Ryn, Prabuty, Skarszewy, Dzierzgoń and Człuchów, it is well worth visiting the most interesting architectural objects of the mediaeval period. In each of these towns you can find a fragment of common history, spend a night within the imposing castle walls, see shows and jousting exhibitions, spend the evening discovering the corners of the building which are not opened by day, and feast until morning on traditional Polish dishes, accompanied by the sounds of antique music and the scent of candles... You can go there by train, bicycle or car, and each castle ctions: the castle attra welcomes guests with a unique mediaeval charm...
