Once Upon a Time at Barker Mansion… by Dawn Komasinski

Just as a great many local residents are in the midst of their decorating for the imminent holiday season, so is the devoted staff of Michigan City’s historic Barker Mansion. However, unlike most of us who are lucky to put just one tree and a few decorations on display, the staff of the always picturesque Barker Mansion have transformed this celebrated manor into an enchanted land where one room after the next is alive with magic and delight. This holiday season the staff of Barker Mansion warmly welcomes guests to capture the Christmas spirit reminiscent of make-believe stories by taking part in their open house and/or guided tour now through January 15, 2008. You’ll be filled with delight when you visit the ten beautifully decorated rooms, each with a different inviting fairy tale theme sure to bring to life the child in us all.

Staff member, Sarah Moon, puts the finishing touches on “The Snow Queen” exhibit on display in the foyer.

Your fairy land adventure begins in the Foyer on the main floor of the mansion where “The Snow Queen” takes to life. This fairy tale tells the story of a young boy taken captive by an evil queen who attempts to disillusion him. Due to the fortitude of one little girl he is rescued from her trance and returns to his adolescent life. Truth and beauty shine through into the breathtaking foyer display as in the fairy tale itself. Following your encounter with “The Snow Queen” you step into the Library where the adventures of “Alice in Wonderland” come to life. Alice’s strange dream world, which introduced her to the likes of the March Hare, The Mad Hatter, The Cheshire Cat and others too many to name, is beautifully decorated in sharp red hues and whimsical ornaments, which include an array of queen of hearts playing cards and flamingos. Continued on Page 2

The floor to ceiling decorations that fill the “Alice in Wonderland” themed room present a picture of The Mad Tea Party and Alice’s struggle to escape from the Queen of Hearts domain.

Just off the south side of the foyer is the mansion’s Drawing Room where you’ll find a stunning display of golden tinsel surrounding a wooden spinning wheel and know at first glance you’ve entered into the story of “Rumpelstiltskin”. In this uncanny tale, Rumpelstiltskin comes to the poor miller’s daughter’s rescue and aids her in spinning gold from meager straw, a favor for which she becomes indebted to him in a painstaking way.

Beauty a part of his world. As you make your way through the dining room into the Butler’s Pantry, you happen upon an inviting display of sugary, sweet delicacies and realize you’ve just entered into the telling of “Hansel and Gretel”. This classic story of a wicked witch who lures two abandoned children into her dwelling made of all things edible so as to have them for dinner, reminds us to resist temptations and find where we truly belong in life.

The gold trimmings covering the tree in the “Rumpelstiltskin” room signify a sense of solidity, a quality that the king flaunted in this classic fairy tale.

You’ll find it hard to resist the sweet treat displays just as young “Hansel and Gretel” did as you mosey into the kitchen.

After you’ve finished you’re recounting of “Rumpelstiltskin”, the classic tale of true love that is “Beauty and the Beast” comes to life in the mansion’s Dining Room. You are first struck by the brilliant dark hues of the room, which indicate a sense of deep emotion in the scene. After such, you come to notice that only a single place setting is atop the dining table, which brings to mind the theme of the timid Beast’s hospitality and his longing to make

After completing your tour of the main level, ascend the staircase adorned in fragrant garland and shiny silver ornaments to continue your fairy tale journey. The French Room just atop the second floor landing showcases the elegance that is “Sleeping Beauty”. This scene shows Sleeping Beauty having just risen from lovely satin sheets after being kissed by her noble prince.

Intense dark plum colored embellishments adorn the tree and furniture alike to create a scene much like that imagined in the celebrated story “Beauty and the Beast”.

Ascend the grand stairways adorned with fragrant garland and shiny silver bows to continue your fairy tale journey.

Save Patience and passivity, two key elements in the classic tale of “Sleeping Beauty”, are resounded in this scene’s tasteful display.

The Monuments of Paris room takes you deep into the woods where you encounter the classic children’s bedtime story of “Goldilocks and The Three Bears”. Furnishings, food and forest remnants are ‘just right’ as in the story when you enter the Bear family’s humble abode.

Barker Continued from Page 3 Upon entering the Master Bedroom, you are struck by the sweet temperament of the room where a beautiful gown has been laid out and slippers are slung about the tree, which reveals to you instantly the story of “Cinderella”. This tale of goodness triumphing over evil is a favorite among most and signifies a classic story book ending.

Each unique designed satin slipper hung about the tree add to the beauty of the eye-catching tree in the “Cinderella” themed room.

Finally, you are whisked away into the Morning Room where you happen about ‘the fairest of them all’. “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” is an unforgettable tale of a beautiful fair skinned maiden who after being whisked away into the dark forest by order of her wicked stepmother befriends seven dwarfs and is adored by animals of all kinds. This tale, as many before it, signifies how kindness and honesty prevail over deceitfulness and cruelty; a lesson many of us, even though grown-up as we might be, have taken to heart.

Christmas stockings, one for each of the Seven Dwarfs, are hung on the fireplace mantle to await Santa’s arrival.

Beginning Saturday, December 1 through December 16, from 12:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m. Monday through Friday and 12:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Barker Mansion will host an open house during which time you may leisurely stroll throughout the walls of the manor taking in all there is to see. From December 17 through January 15, at times of 10:00 a.m., 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Monday through

December 13, 2007 Friday and 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, the enthusiastic staff will take visitors on guided tours of the manor during which time they will briefly narrate the fairy tales on display and acquaint you with the history of Barker Mansion. Please note that Barker Mansion will be closed from December 23 through Christmas Day and also on New Year’s Day. Admission to the mansion is $4.00 per adult, $2.00 per adolescent under the age of 17 and free to children under the age of 3. As I’m sure almost everyone knows, Barker Mansion is open year round to the public and is filled with turn-of-the-century furnishings, hardware and tapestries that emit a great class and sense of character reminiscent of the days when the family of railcar industrialist John H. Barker inhabited the manor. Through the generous funding of The Barker Welfare Foundation and The Barker Guild and the unyielding support of Executive Director Cecilia Zubler, housekeeper Mary Adorned with white lilies, doves and angel gurines, this tree signifies the prayer for Kintzele, and tour fipeace throughout the Christmas season guides/staff members B.J. Parmley, Ann Jankowski and Sarah Moon, this prominent structure has and will continue to flourish for decades to come. I’ve said it before about a number of other activities I’ve taken part in this year and I’ll say it again; the festive tour of Barker Mansion is sure to delight both youth and elder alike. So, I invite you to take a break from your Christmas shopping and enjoy an afternoon tour with family and friends. Be sure to stop into the mansion’s Gift Nook just off of the Drawing Room where you’ll find charming Christmas ornaments, tea sets and train toys as well as books about trains and teas and things in between which I’m sure would make an exceptional gift for someone on your list. Barker Mansion is located at 631 Washington Street in Michigan City, Indiana. The Lubeznik Center for the Arts will be presenting several simultaneous exhibitions featuring artwork by contemporary folk, intuitive and visionary artists from Dec. 15-Feb. 16, 2008. The opening reception will be Sun., Dec. 16, 1–3 p.m. The outsider artist has historically been viewed as someone both untrained and often disconnected with reality. “Contemporary American Folk Art: The Arient Family Collection,” curated by David Sokol, will “examine a number of contemporary American artists and asks us to sort out the meaning and relevance of the terms: folk, self-taught, outsider, naive.” The Arient’s have been collectors since the mid-seventies, during which time they saw America and befriended dozens of artist along the way. “Works on Paper and Parchment by Rabbi Douglas Goldhamer” will also be on display between Dec. 15 and Feb. 16. Goldhamer, a Rabbi with a 30 year history in the Chicago area, began painting in 1989. His works, often painted on goatskin parchment, focus heavily on biblical, apocalyptic and kabalistic themes and have been exhibited at the Judy Saslow & Aron Packer Galleries in Chicago as well as the National Jewish Museum of Washington DC. His book, This is for Everyone: Universal Principles of Healing and the Jewish Mystics is available for purchase in the Lubeznik Center’s Gallery shop. Also during this time, in the West Lobby, “Indiana Visionaries” will feature works from Artistic Spirit Gallery in Indianapolis. Acting Theatre of Michigan City presents Christmas Revels XVIII Dec. 14-16, 21-23 in The Acting Theatre, 215 W. 10th St., Michigan City. In this 18th annual tradition, fantasy characters - “young and of a middle sort” as Saint Winter (Doug Moon) declares -- gather at his castle to celebrate Christian holiday, Hanukkah and the beginnings of our holiday customs in The Winter Solstice. At the heart of it all is the celebration of the coming of Light; the place where souls connect and joy is found in the darkness of the longest nights of winter. Arriving for the festivities on a blizzard-like night are The Duchess of Dancing, Winter’s favorite partner (Helen Williams), Holly Days, whose laughter and love of Wassail is legendary (Mary Fridh), The Laird of November and Icethistle, arriving from Scotland separately, but whose ongoing love affair can’t be missed (Don Pfeifer and Judith Joseph) and everyone’s favorite politician, Mayor McEvergreen (Kevin Firme). Living at the Castle is the part magic, part human Mistletoes (Sarah Murray) who is in charge of many things including The Advent Children (Juliana Hancock, Hannah Moore, Natalie Riley). The Revels are interrupted by three strange, frightened children who can’t remember anything after an avalanche destroyed their town (Blizzard Children: Emily Murray, Taylor Clifford, Ryne Riley). Caring for these strangers and welcoming them into the celebration ceremonies is part of the Revels, too. Ken Brelsfoard and Mary Fridh direct. Lighting design is by ATMC Technical Director Tom Montgomery. Terry Alexander is Technician and Carol Nolan is backstage “Godmother.” Friday and Saturday shows are at 7 p.m.; Sundays at 4 p.m. Admission is $12/adults, $8/children under 13 yrs. Group rates are available and this is a very positive show for the family. Phone 219/8724221 for further information.

Gingerbread “Eye Candy” on Exhibit at Chesterton Art Center The imaginations of the entrants in the gingerbread exhibit has created a buzz in and around Chesterton. This year marks the 9th Annual Sugarplum Visions exhibit and contest at the Chesterton Art Center. The gingerbread creations will be on display through December 15.Monetary donations serve as the voting mechanism this year, and

all proceeds will go to the Westchester Food Pantry. The winner(s) of the Most Popular gingerbread creation will be announced the week of December 17. The Art Center is located at 115 South Fourth Street in downtown Chesterton. Gallery hours are 11 a.m.-4 p.m. weekdays and 1-4 p.m. weekends, excluding holidays.

The Betterton family’s entry includes ornate “stained glass” windows that glow from within. The Betterton’s rustic ranch entry won last year’s Most Popular entry in the exhibit.

Deb Simanski and Mary Chuman put the finishing touches on their Sandy Nook display.

Christmas at the beach house, “Sandy Nook,” includes candy Andirondack chairs, a surfboard, umbrella table and more. The “lake” is blue and white frosting and the sand—is sand contained in a specially-built foundation.

Billy Gotsch conceived the idea of a gingerbread Noah’s Ark. Pairs of animals are guided up the ramp as two pigs watch from the deck.

Stephanie Buehler’s barnyard scene includes a pair of Cydesdales pulling a gumdrop Christmas tree while the cows look on.

A snowy coconut yard with pond surrounds this gingerbread house, by Amy and Ann Thompson.

The back of this “flagstone” house reveals a festive tree with presents underneath. In another corner (out of camera range) sits a big bear. Maria Cockroft created this display.

Chris and Mallory Benoit built a large, 2-story gingerbread house with Santa on the chimney.

Eight students of Christian Haven in Wheatfield created mini-houses for a village.

It may be a little late this year, or maybe not, to think about alternative ways of celebrating Christmas. By now, most everyone has his tree up and decorated, and at least some presents bought and wrapped. If that is your case, maybe you’ll want to consider new traditions in 2008. Here are ways that some people are changing their approach to the holidays. Alternative Gift Wrap (www.eartheasy.com). This environmental consciousness site provides suggestions for wrapping presents with other than store-bought wrapping paper. Probably the most common alternative is using the colorful Sunday comics. Or, you can make reusable fabric bags that are easily sewn. This is one of many websites that offer suggestions for new ways of wrapping gifts. Alternatives to Cut Trees (www.joytotheplan et.com/3/).Suggestions include using large potted plants, small pines that can later be planted, and even inflatable vinyl Christmas trees. Alternative #8 suggests sponsoring the planting of 15 or more live trees in a damaged ecosystem. Those trees can be purchased for a minimum of $15 at www.americanforests.org/planttrees/. Alternative Gifts (www.alternativegifts.org/). For the person who has everything, or the person who is focused on decluttering and simplifying his or her life, a monetary donation to this organization will provide a goat to a family in Zimbabwe, or seeds to plant crops in another Third World location, or—well, there are several choices of gifting in a socially-conscious way. Another website that offers the same type of gifting option is www.greatgifts.org, based in Great Britain. Charity Checks (www.charitychecks.us). This is a neat idea that offers your friends or employees a way to donate to their favorite charity, and for you to receive a tax deduction. You buy the checks in whatever denomination you choose, then give them as gifts to whomever you like. The receiver decides which charity he or she wishes to give the check to. This is a win-win for everyone. Intelligent Marketplace (www.alanovo.com). Environmentally and socially conscious individuals can use this site to find out which businesses are following a “green” model. The businesses are rated by social responsibility, healthy environment, fair workplace, business ethics, and customer focus. In the computers category, Apple appears to win without trouble. Those who register at this website are focused on influencing corporate behavior through economics. We will probably be seeing many more websites like this in the future. And here are some other, general sites unrelated to Christmas and the topics just mentioned:

December 13, 2007 Kiddie Records (www.kiddierecords.com/). Remember Two Ton Baker and Ding Dong School? Tubby the Tuba, Howdy Doody, Cinderella and Puss in Boots? These and dozens more are available as free downloads at this site. Don’t expect clear tone or quality, because these are original recordings. There is an entire section on Christmas records, too. Listen and or download, and you’ll be humming in nostalgia heaven. I Can Has Cheez Burger (http://icanhascheez burger.com). I am addicted to cute pet photo sites, especially cat and kitten sites. The selections here are cleverly captioned, and laugh-out-loud funny. If you want just funny pictures, go to www.cuteover load.com.

Auditions for “Fiddler On The Roof” In the little village of Anatevka, Tevye, a poor dairyman, tries to instill in his five daughters the traditions of his tight-knit Jewish community in the face of changing social mores and the growing antiSemitism of Czarist Russia. Rich in historical and ethnic detail, “Fiddler On The Roof” has touched audiences around the world with its humor, warmth and honesty. Its universal theme of tradition cuts across barriers of race, class, nationality and religion, leaving audiences crying tears of laughter, joy and sadness. Its celebrated score by Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick, features songs loved the world over: “Sunrise, Sunset,” “If I Were A Rich Man” and “Matchmaker,” to name a few. “Fiddler On The Roof” is simply Broadway at its very best. Casting 25-30 Men, Women and 4 Children (ages 8 years and up). Please bring a prepared song with sheet music, preferably a song NOT from the show. An accompanist will be provided. No a capella or taped music is allowed. There will be a dance audition. Derrick Mittelstaedt of Crown Point will be directing and Jim Mollin of Calumet City will be the musical director and Steven Spanopoulos of Valparaiso will be choreographing. The auditions will be held at the Memorial Opera House, 104 Indiana Ave., Valparaiso, on Mon., Dec. 17th and Tues., Dec. 18 th at 7 p.m. If you have any questions, contact The Memorial Opera House, 219-548-9137 or email mcraig@ memorialoperahouse.com. Performances dates are: February 8, 9,10,15,16,17,22,23 & 24.

English style tea with cream, and the Russian style tea with lemon and sugar will be served on the Barker Hall monogrammed china. Hot punch will also be served. A Cake Walk will be held at 3:30 p.m. with five festive cakes as prizes. Guests will also receive complementary copies of tea menu recipes. Tickets are $5.00 for adults, $2.50 for children under 12 and free for children under 6. Entertainment will be provided by the Community Children’s Choir conducted by Sunny GardnerOrbivich. Christmas instrumental music will be performed by the Merge Trio. Members are Dennis Brittin on flute and mandolin, Mitch Gregory, guitar, and Deborah Sawyer, harper. Recently renovated, the romantic gothic style Great Hall is a 3600 square foot oak paneled room, lit by 15 foot tall leaded glass windows and 4 foot wide chandeliers. Holiday decorations include sixteen live Christmas trees. The trees were decorated by area high students as part of a tree trimming contest. Visitors can vote for their favorite tree. Awards for the best decorations will be given during the free Community Sing-a-Long, December 22. The Barker Hall Community Center is located on Sixth Street between Pine and Franklin Streets in Michigan City, Indiana. Afternoon tea has been a tradition and important part of daily life in England for over 150 years. Prior to afternoon tea, the British ate two daily meals — breakfast and dinner. During the mid1700s, the middle and upper classes shifted dinner from midday to the evening. Served at a fashionably late hour, dinner was a protracted, feast-like affair. In 1662, Catherine of Braganza of Portugal married Charles II from England’s House of Stuart. When the newlywed Catherine arrived in Portsmouth, she brought her tea chest and asked for a cup. Soon after, Catherine deigned tea as the official court beverage. Tea was a rare luxury in Catherine’s day for it was scarce, expensive and highly taxed. Although the famed English East India Company had formally introduced tea in the 1600s, it took Catherine’s royal influence to make it fashionable. One of Queen Victoria’s ladies-in-waiting, Anna Maria Stanhope (1783-1857), the 7th Duchess of Bedford, also had a hand in popularizing afternoon tea. Because the noon meal was very light, the Duchess found she was hungry by late afternoon. As a solution, her servants snuck her tea and cakes to

tide her over until dinner, which was served at 8:30 or 9 p.m. The plan was such a success she invited friends to join her at five o’clock in her rooms at Belvoir Castle. The menu featured an array of dainty cakes, bread and butter sandwiches, assorted sweets, and tea. Given her station in life, everything was elegant Hostesses throughout England quickly followed suit, establishing afternoon tea as a social ritual. In the 21st century, tea has become a popular drink all over the world. Afternoon tea remains a fashionable and graceful event.

Indiana Dunes Christmas Bird Count Meet fellow birdwatchers for a day of birding in the duneland vicinity, Dec. 15. Participants can come for all or part of the day and should bring a sack lunch if needed, plus binoculars and a spotting scope if they have one. Most teams should meet at the Nature Center by 7 a.m. From there, the counters will break into previously determined parties to cover different areas within a 15-mile diameter circle. Depending on area and team plans, some groups will go directly into the field without reporting to the Nature Center. Similarly, for lunch, some parties may eat in town; others may eat in the field. Those reporting back to the Nature Center to eat will be greeted by a couple of pots of chili and coffee to help warm up. A fee of $3 per person for participants ages 19 and older will be collected and sent to the National Audubon Society, which administers the event. Several local Audubon groups donate money to reduce the costs for each participant, including Chicago Audubon and Dunes-Calumet Audubon. The required prior registration can be made by phoning the Nature Center, (219) 926-1390 so that teams can be formed and plans made. Birders within the 15-mile diameter circle may also contribute by observing birds at their feeders and calling in the results. Please phone the Nature Center ahead of time if you plan to do this. Vegetarian A Chicago Tribune article in November named Northwestern University most vegetarianfriendly.....”with its vegan pancakes and chickenless nuggets. It beat out 30 other U.S. nominees – including the hip University of California, Berkeley – by serving meatless options such as a tasty tofu francaise and fajita strips made from seitan, a wheat gluten.” It suddenly occurred to me that many Beacher readers may be vegetarians so I picked up a few library books with veggie recipes. I haven’t yet cooked any, but they sound fascinating.

OMELET CANNELLONI WITH SPINACH FILLING 1-1/4 lb spinach, washed 1/4 cup low fat soft cream cheese 8 T freeshly grated Parmesan cheese grated nutmeg 4 eggs 2 T water 1 T olive oil salt, pepper Put the spinach with just the water clinging to the leaves into a large saucepan; cover and cook for 6-7 minutes, or until tender. Drain well. Add the cream cheese to the spinach along with 4 T of the Parmesan cheese. Mix well and season with salt, pepper and grated nutmeg. Set aside. Whisk the eggs with the water and salt and pepper to taste. Brush a skillet (preferably nonstick) with a little of the olive oil and heat, then pour in enough of the egg – about 2 T – to make a small omelet. Cook for a few seconds, until it is set, then lift out onto a plate. Continue in this way until you have made about 8 small omelets, piling them up on top of each other. Spoon a little of the spinach mixture onto the edge of one of the omelets, roll it up, and place in a shallow gratin dish. Fill the remaining omelets in the same way, until all the spinach mixture has been used up, placing them snugly side by side in the dish. Sprinkle with the remaining Parmesan and bake in a preheated oven, 375 degrees for about 25 minutes, or until bubbling and golden brown on top.

ROASTED PEPPER SALAD 2 red bell peppers 2 yellow bell peppers 2 green bell peppers 1 T extra-virgin olive oil 1-1/2 tsp capers, drained 2 T chopped fresh herbs (parsley, basil, oregano, marjoram and/or chives) a sprig of fresh basil for garnish (or any of the above) Preheat the grill or broiler. Grill the peppers over high heat, turning as necessary, until all are thoroughly charred. This will take 6 to 8 minutes. Alternatively, the peppers can be broiled, baked on a hot baking sheet, or even charred directly on a gas or electric stove burner. Wrap the roasted peppers in wet paper towels or place them in a sealed paper bag and set aside to cool. This helps loosen the skin. Transfer the peppers to a plate. Scrape off the charred skin with the side of a knife. Cut each pepper in half, core and seed, reserving the juices. Cut each half lengthwise in half or thirds and arrange the pepper pieces, alternating color, on a round platter. Combine the vinegar, lemon juice and salt and pepper to taste in a mixing bowl. Whisk until the salt crystals are dissolved. Whisk in the olive oil, capers, herbs and any juices from the peppers. Correct the seasoning, adding vinegar or salt to taste. Spoon the dressing over the salad and garnish with a basil sprig in the center. Serve at once. Serves 4 to 6.

ROASTED ASPARAGUS 2 bunches asparagus, trimmed 1 T olive oil 1/2 tsp minced thyme 1/2 tsp grated lemon zest 1/4 tsp salt 1/8 tsp fresh ground black pepper Preheat oven to 425 degrees. On a baking sheet, combine the asparagus with all other ingredients and roast until tender, tossing once, 10-15 minutes. (They tell us: “Once you’ve had roasted asparagus, you’ll never go back to the watery steamed version again.”)

Chicago Street Theatre is seeking letters and emails from military personnel. The correspondence may become part of the stage production of a show to open in February. Directors of Chicago Street Theatre’s production, “Letters Home,” are working with playwright, William Massolia, to further develop this sincere and riveting script right here in Northwest Indiana. Include the name and hometown of the recipient of the letter and/or the associated military member, his/her rank, military branch, mission, and dates and stations of tour/s of duty. Travels with Charley: Courting Hot Times on Cold Nights at La Lumiere School by Charles McKelvy

Got a bad case of the winter blues? Then get thee and thine to the warm and friendly indoor confines of La Lumiere School’s basketball stadium where you will witness some of the fiercest high school b-ball from now through almost the end of February. Director of Athletics Delray Brooks, who doubles as varsity basketball coach, invites you to take the chill out of a long winter’s night by driving over to 6801 North Wilhelm Road north of La Porte and simply witnessing high school basketball at its best.

Coach Delray Brooks promises plenty of basketball excitement at La Lumiere School this winter.

And if the name “Delray Brooks” is at all familiar to you Michigan City basketball fans, please know that Coach Brooks is THE local basketball legend who developed a passion for the game at the age of 3 in Michigan City and played gloriously for Michigan City Rogers before going on to play for the legendary Bobby Knight at Indiana University. Much more could be said of the man who almost made a 1984 Olympic team that included Michael Jordan, but, as he says, “I’ve had an opportunity to play for some great coaches and play in some great places.” But he is most excited to be where he is now which is in his third season as coach of the red-hot Lakers. And if you have any doubts as to the bang you will get for your bucks at a La Lumiere home game, please first know that you will part with no bucks at the door and only at the concession stand where the La Lumiere Parents’ Association has a tasty assortment of goodies awaiting your snacking pleasure. And now please attend to this recap of the Lakers’ recent hard-fought triumph over their rivals from New Buffalo, the Bison. After the Bison beat the Lakers 54-14 in the Junior Varsity contest, the Varsity Lakers took to their

composite floor with verve and valor. For almost a half-century, after all, La Lumiere School has provided a comprehensive college-preparatory education for qualified young men and women from a rich diversity of backgrounds, so the richly diverse Lakers squad was looking for their first win over the mighty Bison. And they wanted to do so before the happy home crowd of students and faithful parents who know from experience to bring seat pads for the concrete bleachers. And by diverse we should make particular note of the Lakers’ towering center from Serbia, one Luca Mirkovic. A soaring talent in any language, Luca led the Lakers to a thrilling 58-49 victory over the Bison by scoring 23 points. His hard-charging teammate De’Andre Haskins was close behind with 18 points, and the rest of the team should also be honorably mentioned for their many contributions on or off the court.

Luca Mirkovic, who stands 6’11”, bends to his coach’s advice.

They are, as listed in the roster: Jack Caplice, Cody Dunifon, Taylor Dunifon, Sy Harris, Torrence Harris, Jeff McComas, Brendon Mulvey, Jim Ross, and Ken Yeh. And they all contributed to a great evening of

entertainment on a cold, dark night in the heart of La Porte County. New Buffalo led 17-15 at the end of the first quarter, and the two rivals went into the half in a 28-28 dead heat.

The husbandand-wife team of Willie and Evelyn Davis officiated at the Lakers-Bison games. Willie was referee and Evelyn was umpire, and they did not argue once during the two games.

Coach Delray Brooks gives the Lakers their playing orders before the start of their game against New Buffalo. The Lakers won 58-49.

But Coach Brooks, who was not seen to be shy during the first half, obviously ignited a few fires in his players’ hearts during the break, because the Lakers were all over the ball in the third quarter.

Chris Good prepares to make good on a free throw during the Lakers’ Junior Varsity game against the New Buffalo Bison.

They were up 42-34 going into the final quarter of play, but the Bison were not beaten by any means, and the game really wasn’t decided until the closing minutes and seconds of the game. Might have been cold outside, but it was sure hot in that hopping arena of Lakers basketball. After his players had sportingly shaken hands with their rivals from New Buffalo, Coach Brooks said: “Tonight’s game was a toughly fought battle against New Buffalo. They’ve always beaten us, and they’re a tough team, and they’ve got some good shooters. But we did the things necessary to win the basketball game.”

Coach Brooks said his goal is to develop a competitive basketball program at La Lumiere School. “We play a competitive schedule against competitive schools, and we want to be able to compete with them. That’s our goal.” He is proudest of the fact that “all of our kids graduate and get accepted to college. And we want to prepare those who have the potential to play at the college level. We want to prepare them both academically and athletically for what’s in store for them.” And, as far as you are concerned, the coach promises nothing but pure basketball excitement for the remainder of the 2007-08 season. Like, for example, the home card for Thursday, January 17 when both the Varsity and the Junior Varsity take on the Benton Bucks in a double-bill beginning at 4:30 p.m. Step away from paying your holiday bills and step into some hot high school basketball action at La Lumiere School, which, again, is located at: 6801 North Wilhelm Road in rural La Porte County. Phone 219/326-7450 for additional information and be ready to cheer for the Lakers.

A Christmas Beginning by Anne Perry Perusing the book shelves at this holiday season, you can find many short novels (under 200 pages) about Christmas and the holiday season in general. They always make great stuffing stuffers or hostess gifts. And the exciting part of them is that best selling authors generally put out at least one of these novels, sometimes every year, like Carol Higgins or this week’s author,Anne Perry. Anne Perry is the English queen of the historical mystery novel. She has written two very popular series that take place in Victorian England: the William Monk series and the Charlotte and Thomas Pitt series (a married couple not unlike our Nick and Nora Charles, only a lot more reserved.). In this novel, also set in Victorian times, Superintendent Runcorn of Scotland Yards decides to take a Christmas holiday to the island of Anglesley, just off the coast of Wales. A solitary man in his fifties, he comes across as a man who has reconciled himself to his station in life and actually likes being a policeman. A recent case that introduced him to a beautiful witness, Melisande Ewart, widow and some years his junior, made him realize, however, how empty his life really was. But she was gentry and above his station in life, so he tried putting her out of his mind. As he is introduced to the locals after church, Runcorn is delighted to see Melisande among the parishioners. To his delight, she remembers him kindly, although her brother looks down his nose at him. Runcorn realizes he is out of his element with these people and determines to proceed with his holiday and put Melisande out of his mind. Settling in on the remote and beautiful island just days before Christmas, Runcorn takes an early morning walk and finds the lifeless body of Olivia Costain, obviously killed with a knife. The strange thing was there was no sign of a struggle. Olivia was the twenty something sister of the local vicar.

The murder stirs up much fear in this close knit community, but the most fear seems to come from the local constable, Sir Alan Faraday. Part of the gentry, he is reluctant to question them about what could have led to this heinous crime, so Runcorn soon finds himself involved in the investigation after Melisande makes a plea to him to help Sir Faraday find the murderer of her dear friend. Characters abound in this novel, several of whom might have motive to want Olivia dead. Runcorn’s common sense and past experience brings out sordid details some would like to keep quiet. All in all, a satisfying read for a nice curl-up by the fireplace. A Family Christmas selected and introduced by Caroline Kennedy This book, likes its subject, has a solid and familiar feel to it. It doesn’t shout at you, it just sits comfortably in your hands and makes you think of Christmases past and present, and makes you long for those to come. The book’s simple illustrations, on a heavy cream paper, complement the writing in a dignified yet old-fashioned kind of feel. Even the attached green ribbon bookmark says this is a book you can lay down and pick up again and again to enjoy by yourself or read out loud. Caroline Kennedy’s quiet grace, like her mother Jacqueline, comes across in this book very clearly. She has picked stories, poems, and songs that have a timelessness to them like old friends and old memories. There are short stories by authors as diverse as Pearl Buck, Joseph Conrad, e e cummings, George Bernard Shaw and Garrison Keillor, and a section on “Christmas in Wartime” featuring letters and writings from George Washington to soldiers in Iraq. This is simply the best Christmas book of the year. It’s like a family album of the old, the familiar and the beloved. Till next time, happy reading and happy shopping--only twelve days to go!
