Niki Lauda

Peter O’Toole in ‘Lawrence of Arabia’

On 1st August 1976, famous racing driver Niki Lauda was rushed to hospital after a serious crash. It had happened at the Nurburgring Grand Prix in Germany.

On 2nd August 1932, Peter O’Toole was born. Strangely he had two birth certificates. One said he was born in Ireland, in June 1932. The other one said he was born in Leeds, on 2nd August.

Niki Lauda was trapped inside his Ferrari when it swerved off the track and burst into flames. He was pulled out, but was badly burned. For a few days it was touch and go whether he would survive. But he did, and within six weeks he was driving again. He won the World Championship the following year and again in 1984. © 2016 Daily Sparkle

Peter O’Toole got recognition first as a Shakespearean actor at Bristol Old Vic. But noone will forget his role as Lawrence of Arabia. The film came out in 1962. His piercing blue eyes made most of us long to be in the desert and to be rescued by him. He was the ultimate inscrutable hero.

Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother

On 3rd August 1905, the Hollywood film star Dolores del Rio was born in Mexico. Her agent wanted to transform her into a ‘Female Latin Lover’. They wanted her to be as successful as Rudolf Valentino.

On 4th August 2000, Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother celebrated her 100th birthday. She was the wife of King George VI and the mother of Queen Elizabeth and Princess Margaret.

She made her film debut in 1925, in ‘Joanna’. The following year she starred in ‘High Steppers’. They weren’t blockbusters but they helped to increase her popularity. One of her best known films was the musical, ‘Flying Down to Rio’. That was the film that first showed Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers together. © 2016 Daily Sparkle

As Queen, she had carried out lots of public engagements. She always appeared friendly and good humoured. She gained the nickname ‘The Smiling Duchess’. During the war she did so much to support the King and cheer up the British people that Adolf Hitler called her the “the most dangerous woman in Europe”!

Marilyn Monroe

Chris Bonington

On 5th August 1962, Marilyn Monroe died in California at the young age of 36. She had taken an overdose of pills. No-one knew if she had meant to die or not. Some believe the level of her fame was too much to bear.

On 6th August 1934, Chris Bonington, the mountaineer, was born in London. He joined the Royal Fusiliers and was later commissioned in the Royal Tank Regiment.

Marilyn did not have a happy childhood and she had been sent to live with foster carers. She got her first modelling contract when she was 18.

When he left the Army, in 1961, he went to work at a big manufacturing company – Unilever. But this was not the life for him. He was soon back in the mountains, as a professional mountaineer and explorer.

Marilyn Monroe was married three times. The first when she was only 16. It was probably hard to stay married to such a famous sex symbol.

His career has included nineteen expeditions to the Himalayas – four of them to Mount Everest. He also writes books and appears on TV.

Kenneth Kendall

Butlins poster

On 7th August 1924, Kenneth Kendall was born in India. Although we probably all think of him as a news reader on BBC television, he had a few other jobs too.

Butlin’s posters used to be everywhere, in magazines and newspapers, tempting us all to go on holiday. Their advertising was much more effective than the adverts for some of their competitors.

He was a captain in the Coldstream Guards during the Second World War. For a short time he also worked at Austin Reed Menswear in Regent Street. Perhaps that’s why he always looked so elegant and smartly dressed himself. He was also the host of ‘Songs of Praise’ and the game show ‘Treasure Hunt’. © 2016 Daily Sparkle

Pontins ran holiday camps too, but they were not as well known. And there were a few independent caravan parks that advertised holidays, but they didn’t have all the wellorganised entertainments that made Butlin’s famous. It’s interesting how many singers and celebrities started their careers with a few seasons as a Butlin’s Redcoat.

Overhearing funny sayings

Can-can dancer at the Moulin Rouge

It’s a funny saying isn’t it, about giving someone ‘a piece of my mind’? Which piece? It never seems to be a friendly piece that’s for sure. It always seems to involve a telling off or an unwelcome truth.

I read something recently about dancers at the Moulin Rouge. It’s the famous cabaret theatre in Paris where the can-can was invented. The can-can was supposed to be a bit saucy, but I thought it sounded like a lot of fun!

The Way We Were

When I was a child I often didn’t understand sayings I overheard from grown-ups. That was one of them. I also misheard things. A phrase I thought my Aunt often used was, “When all seven done”. What could she possibly mean? Seven what? It was years before I knew it was “When all is said and done”. © 2016 Daily Sparkle

Can-can dancers wore ruffled skirts and bloomers, which must have been quite hot to dance in. Some of the other acts wore all sorts of exotic sequinned and feathered costumes. The description of leaping up into the air and landing in the splits made my eyes water! Don’t try this at home!

Do You Remember

Grundig tape recorder

10cc Rock Group

Do you remember when tape recorders looked like this? They were called reel-to-reel tape recorders. This one is a Grundig.

In the early 1970s, pop music seemed to split into two. One half had popular singers and the start of disco music. The Bee Gees were the great disco group at the time.

They had a deep, whirring sound as they worked. The control switches were great big things. They made a proper clunking sound when you pressed them. They were big enough to have decent speakers, so the sound quality was surprisingly good. When I went to college, the lecturer used a big Grundig tape recorder. He would carry it out from the storeroom. It was very heavy. My mate Colin always said, “Oh, no, not another listening exercise!” © 2016 Daily Sparkle

But the other half of pop music became serious and deep. Bands drew on classical music. They played long, mysterious tracks on albums. It was often called art rock. One band that went into art rock was 10cc. The band was made up of four lads from Stockport. Their best known popular song was ‘Donna’. A lot of the rest of their music was what you might call ‘experimental’. I wasn’t keen, but my wife, Angie loved it. “It’s cool music,” she said.

Do You Remember

Fishing boat, Montrose, Scotland

I took this snap earlier this summer. Angie and I were on holiday in Scotland. We were on our way up the east coast. We spotted this little fishing boat just coming back into Montrose harbour. There are lots of hard ways of making a living. Fishing is one of them. On a calm day, with a good catch, it is not so bad. But if the fishing is poor, it is hard to make a living. And then there are storms at sea to contend with. Yet it seems a romantic way to earn a living. We watched the little fishing boats tie up in Montrose. The men were laughing and joking. It had been a good day at sea, and the weather had been fair. © 2016 Daily Sparkle

Needles made in Redditch

Dear Mary and Jimmy When my daughter moved to a village near Redditch we enjoyed exploring the area. It was a part of the country we didn’t know very well. When we stayed there for a few days my husband Bill and I used to do a lot of walking. The local park was on land given by a couple in memory of their son who had died in the First World War. The stepping stones in the stream were made from needle grindstones. That sent us off to Forge Mill Needle Museum. Redditch had the biggest needle manufacturer in the world. Amazing! Best wishes, from Winifred

Dear Mary and Jimmy When we were kids, we sometimes had a bit of a craze for lucky mascots. My brother’s football team adopted our dog as theirs. They had heard about Army units having a goat as a mascot and this was the nearest they could get! The girls in my year at school often took a lucky mascot into exams. It was usually something small that could be slipped into your pencil case. Gonks were very popular. I haven’t seen one of those for ages. My friend Josie had a Cornish Piskie. Ladybird charms were popular too. Best wishes, from Shirley © 2016 Daily Sparkle
