It's Time!

We all know that when the weather finally breaks in spring, we tend to start getting over-anxious for our offshore fishing season to begin. After that first sunny, 60 degree day, the fever begins to take hold. But when we started experiencing 70 degree weather in February this year, it made the waiting that much worse. But now, it’s time! We always kick off the year in June with our annual Shark Tournament. The big news for this year is that we dropped the Blue Shark Points division and made it strictly a Mako Points category, along with reallocating a portion of the money for the tournament prize of Heaviest Blue Shark to the Daily Heaviest Mako categories. We’ve also added a new Calcutta for boats 35 feet and under where 60% of the pot will go to the Heaviest Mako and 40% to Heaviest Shark. Plus, special promotions and incentives are in the works for boats equipped with selected outboard power, but more on that later. The dates this year are June 7-10 and being the premier shark tournament in NJ, it never ceases to be a fun, exciting and lucrative event for competitive shark anglers. July brings us two events, The 23rd Annual Viking/Ocean Showdown (July 11-15) where owners from those two manufacturers go head to head for bragging rights, and a completely new event for the competitive fisherman, the South Jersey On the Meat Overnighter. The On the Meat Overnighter will be taking place July 2022 and has been designed for anglers who want to have a fun night out on the water, save on fuel, catch some meat and win some cash! The best part of this event is the fact that you can overnight with several other boats at the same time and enjoy the many fun aspects of overnight fishing. (If you’ve never overnighted before, this is the ideal opportunity to give it a go.) All the prize money is in the Calcuttas, so you can pick and choose to participate at any financial level you wish. With all the hallmark ingredients for a fun, competitive night out on the rip, you’ll want to be here for this one! The third week in August is reserved for the Mid-Atlantic $500,000, boat for boat, the richest marlin and tuna tournament in the world. Dates for 2012 are August 19-24 and plans are on track for making this the best year yet! You can fish from Cape May, NJ or Ocean City MD, with a fish 3 out of 5 day format and a weigh-in at each port. No hurricanes, rough seas or evacuations this year; just great fishing, a huge purse and six days of fun. As always, it will be a great time and the one event of the summer that you don’t want to miss! In the meantime, all of our tournament info including entry forms and IGFA rules are within these pages. Of course you can always go to www.SouthJerseyTournaments.com or call (609) 884-2400 for tournament info or any questions you might have. And remember, if we can be of assistance with accommodations, travel or advice, please don’t hesitate to ask. Rally your crew, ready your gear and let’s go fishing! See you at the scales,

An Unusual Tournament Season? by Bob Glover

When was the last time we had an outstanding yellowfin bite during the first two weeks of June? We ask that question because that particicular tuna bite set the stage for the most unusual tournament season we’ve ever seen here in Cape May. Bizarre is the only way to describe the water temperatures during our 31st Annual Shark Tournament. In the 30 plus years of running this event, we can’t remember warm water like that. It’s run in the same time frame every year and we’re usually right on the meat. All of that early warm water certainly confused things, especially the fish! So much so that some die-hard sharkers skipped the event to chase the tuna! Participants did manage to get into some Makos, but the Threshers and Blues that we always get were elusive. Anglers hopes were high going into day one despite the warm water and everyone left the dock excited. At the end of the day, only two Makos qualified and would end up holding first and second going into day two. A third place fish hit the scale on Saturday and all three would end up with a paycheck later that night at the awards. We do think everyone had a good time despite the abnormal temperatures. (Fishing for makos in 73 degree water- Are you kidding me?) There were some Blue and Brown shark releases and several large Tigers let go, but it certainly would have been a heck

of a lot more fun if the water was at its normal temp for this time of year. At least we had some good tuna fishing in the following weeks! The 22nd Annual Viking/Ocean followed shortly after on Wednesday, the 13th of July. After an unscheduled lay day due to high winds offshore on Thursday, the fleet of 26 Vikings and 25 Oceans headed to the canyons Friday to do battle. At stake: Bragging rights! The first day of fishing was a bit slow with only 13 whites and a handful of tunas (what happened to that bite?) and a few dolphins caught. Day 2 (Saturday) picked up with considerably more billfish release action. A total of 39 Whites, 4 Blues and several more tuna and dolphin contributed to both teams point totals. And, later that day at 3pm, it was over. When everyone’s catch was totaled, Team Viking emerged as the victor. Later that night, the tent was packed for the awards party as everyone turned out to celebrate, mingle and relax. John Leek of Ocean Yachts presented the Showdown perpetual trophy to Viking’s Pat Healey, and both celebrated with their respective owners after handing out the boat and individual awards. Being a Viking and Ocean Yachts dealer and having the two factories just up the road really gives us a unique opportunity to get friends and families together and have some great dockside fun and friendly

Tournament Season, cont. competition offshore. Just having the Healey and Leek family’s bar-b-queue steaks for their customers at the lay day pool party is alone worth the price of admission! If you’ve never fished it, consider doing so. The whole event is just a fun, fun time! Next on the schedule was the 10th Annual Mid-Atlantic Tuna Tournament. Our current economic state no doubt contributed to a lower than expected turnout and there were weather problems too. An uncertain forecast for the first two days definitely kept a few more participants away, despite the fact that we added an extra fish day. I mean really, who doesn’t like to go tuna fishing? But as Friday came around, the weather cleared, the bite picked up, and those that participated did have the opportunity to enjoy themselves (and that is what it’s all about!) and win some cash! The 20th Annual Mid-Atlantic $500,000 was definitely an event that will be remembered. Hosting 117 boats between Cape May and Ocean City, MD, prize money reached $1,539,130 and the outlook was good for another exciting week of fishing. Monday saw most boats taking a lay day as the weather were looking much better for Tuesday and Wednesday. And it was! Thursday and Friday were up in the air as Hurricane Irene crept up the coast, but the battle was on. By the end of weigh-in on Tuesday night (Day 2 of fishing), every category had been filled. Three qualifying whites, three qualifying blues, three qualifying tuna, and both a dolphin and a wahoo were on the board. Changes to some of those categories would come on Wednesday and Thursday. When Thursday rolled around, Hurricane Irene had been forecast to come right over Cape May sometime on Saturday and mandatory evacuations were being scheduled in both ports. It was decided that afternoon that due to the uncertainty of the coming storm, evacuations, road closings and safety issues, that the tournament would officially end at 9pm

Tournament Season, cont. Thursday evening. We were able to get Colton James’ Cape May performance in as scheduled and he overwhelmingly rocked the house! Mother Nature has a knack for bad timing and everyone was disappointed that she cut us a day short, not to mention scaring the bleep out of us with an earthquake earlier in the week! But at least she blessed us with a good bite as the fishing results for the four days were nothing short of phenomenal: 458 white marlin, 21 blue marlin and numerous tuna. Not a bad week!

Let's not forget Marlin Month

The billfish bite that we experience in our canyons is no secret. Our white marlin bite has always been the best during August and September, but over the last three or four years, it has been outstanding. This past year, it was truly world class, again! If you love chasing whites, why not make plans to join us at Canyon Club Resort Marina this year for Marlin Month. Canyon Club is the center of excitement and the hub for white marlin fishermen when the bite turns on. In fact, it’s become the regions center of big game fishing, all season long! What is Marlin Month? Two years ago we put together a fun, month-long, release event exclusively for boats docked at Canyon Club, and called it Marlin Month. Solely for having fun and seeing who could catch the most, it ran from the first fish day of the Mid-Atlantic $500,000, through the third week in September. When it was all over, the 14 participating boats fished a total of 71 days and released an amazing 605 whites and 6 blues. It was most likely the best white marlin fishing our area has ever seen. It was an absolute blast! Will we be doing it again in 2012? You bet! And you are invited to join in the fun. Marlin Month will begin this year on August 20th and will run through September 26th. So, before you make up your mind about this summers fishing plans, consider joining the fleet at Canyon Club for our 2012 Marlin Month (if you’re fishing the Mid-Atlantic 500, you’ll already be here!). We’ll be making memories with friends and family, experiencing world class fishing and enjoying the good times that go with it. Simply contact Monte or Mike through the Canyon Club Ships Store to extend your reservation from the Mid-Atlantic through the September mayhem it’s truly world class!

Started back in 1992, the “Mother of All Marlin Tournaments” as it was called, posted an unprecedented upfront prize of $500,000. Calcutta entries that first year put the total purse over $1,000,000, making the Mid-Atlantic the first bona fide million dollar billfishing contest. Over the years, the tournament has grown to be one of the top events in the world. Known for its great fishing, hospitality and camaraderie, the MidAtlantic is a must attend event for competitive billfishing anglers. The fishing and fun take place out of two ports: Cape May, NJ, which is the home base of the event and Ocean City, MD, where Sunset Marina serves as OC tournament headquarters. Each port has first class accommodations and offers distinct amenities for participants to enjoy. Both locations have full weigh-ins which are visually linked by computer and broadcast media to keep everyone informed as the excitement happens. If you’re planning on doing some competitive fishing this year, we hope you’ll choose the Mid-Atlantic $500,000. We believe it’s the best bang for your tournament buck, and we know your family, friends and crew will have a great time creating exciting and lasting memories. If you need help in planning for this event simply give us a call and we’ll do whatever we can to help you have a fun, hassle-free time at one of the best events in the world! That figure would be divided by 5 (5 days) giving each day a purse of $40,000. These limits apply to the lower jaw-fork length (tip of the lower jaw to the fork of the tail) of the fish. A billfish under the minimum size must be released by cutting the line near the hook without removing the fish from the water. Under no circumstances may a fish not meeting the Federal and/or State minimum size limits, regardless of weight, be boated and/or brought back to the dock. South Jersey Tournaments will not be responsible for any fine or penalty incurred by any angler who boats a billfish or tuna which does not meet the Federal and/or State size limit requirements or other restrictions. It is the responsibility of the angler to be aware of current Federal and/or State regulations regarding the catching and/or boating of the various species of fish eligible in this tournament. Fish which do not meet the Federal and/or State size limit requirements will not be eligible for prizes, regardless of weight.

IGFA Rules

The following angling rules have been formulated by the International Game Fish Association to promote ethical and sporting angling practices, to establish uniform regulations for the compilation of world game fish records, and to provide basic angling guidelines for sue in fishing tournaments and any other group angling activities. The world angling is defined as catching or attempting to catch fish with a rod, reel, line and hook as outlined in the international angling rules. There are some aspects of angling that cannot be controlled through rule making, however. Angling regulations cannot insure an outstanding performance from each fish, and world records cannot indicate the amount of difficulty in catching the fish. Captures in which the fish has not fought or has not had a chance to fight do not reflect credit on the fisherman, and only the angler can properly evaluate the degree of achievement in establishing the record. Only fish caught in accordance with IGFA international angling rules, and within the intent of those rules, will be considered for world records. Following are the rules for freshwater and saltwater fishing and a separate set of rules for fly fishing. RULES FOR FISHING IN FRESH AND SALT WATER Equipment Regulations

A. LINE 1. Monofilament, multifilament, and lead core multifilament lines may be used. For line classes, see World Record Requirements. 2. Wire lines are prohibited. B. LINEBACKING 1. Backing not attached to the fishing line is permissible with no restrictions as to size or material. 2. If the fishing line is attached to the backing, the catch shall be classified under the heavier of the two lines. The backing may not exceed the 130 lb (60 kg) line class and must be of a type of line approved for use in these angling rules. C. DOUBLE LINE The use of a double line is not required. If one is used, it must meet the following specifications: 1. A double line must consist of the actual line used to catch the fish. 2. Double lines are measured from the start of the knot, braid, roll or splice making the double to the farthermost end of the knot, splice, snap, swivel or other device used for securing the trace, leader, lure or hook to the double line. Saltwater species: In all line classes up to and including 20 lb (10 kg), the double line shall be limited to 15 feet (4.57 meters). The combined length of the double line and leader shall not exceed 20 feet (6.1 meters). The double line on all classes of tackle over 20 lb (10 kg) shall be limited to 30 feet (9.14 meters). The combined length of the double line and leader shall not exceed 40 feet (12.19 meters). Freshwater species: The double line on all classes of tackle shall not exceed 6 feet (1.82 meters). The combined length of the double line and the leader shall not exceed 10 feet (3.04 meters). D. LEADER The use of a leader is not required. If one is used, it must meet the following specifications: The length of the leader is the overall length including any lure, hook arrangement or other device, and is measured to the bend of the last hook. The leader must be connected to the line with a snap, knot, splice, swivel or other device. Holding devices are prohibited. There are no regulations regarding the material or strength of the leader.

Saltwater species :In all line classes up to and including 20 lb (10 kg), the leader shall be limited to 15 feet (4.57 meters). The combined length of the double line and leader shall not exceed 20 feet (6.1 meters). The leader on all classes of tackle over 20 lb (10 kg) shall be limited to 30 feet (9.14 meters). The combined length of the double line and leader shall be limited to 40 feet (12.19 meters). Freshwater species:The leader on all classes of tackle shall be limited to 6 feet (1.82 meters). The combined length of the double line and leader shall not exceed 10 feet (3.04 meters). E. ROD 1. Rods must comply with sporting ethics and customs. Considerable latitude is allowed in the choice of a rod, but rods giving the angler an unfair advantage will be disqualified. This rule is intended to eliminate the use of unconventional rods. 2. The rod tip must be a minimum of 40 inches (101.6 cm) in length. The rod butt cannot exceed 27 inches (68.58 cm) in length. These measurements must be made from a point directly beneath the center of the reel. A curved butt is measured in a straight line. When the rod butt is placed in a gimbal, the measurement from the center of the reel seat to the pivot point of the gimbal can be no more than 27 inches. (The above measurements do not apply to surfcasting rods.) F. REEL 1. Reels must comply with sporting ethics and customs. 2. Power driven reels of any kind are prohibited. This includes motor, hydraulic, or electrically driven reels, and any device that gives the angler an unfair advantage. 3. Ratchet handle reels are prohibited. 4. Reels designed to be cranked with both hands at the same time are prohibited. G. HOOKS FOR BAIT FISHING 1. For live or dead bait fishing no more than two single hooks may be used. Both must be firmly imbedded in or securely attached to the bait. The eyes of the hooks must be no less than a hook's length (the length of the largest hook used) apart and no more than 18 inches (45.72 cm) apart. The only exception is that the point of one hook may be passed through the eye of the other hook. A hook may not precede bait, lure or bait/lure combo by more than one hook’s length. 2. The use of a dangling or swinging hook is prohibited. Double or treble hooks are prohibited. 3. A two hook rig for bottom fishing is acceptable if it consists of two single hooks on separate leaders or drops. Both hooks must be imbedded in the respective baits and separated sufficiently so that a fish caught on one hook cannot be foul hooked by the other. 4. A photograph or sketch of the hook arrangement must accompany all record applications made for fish caught on twohook tackle. H. HOOKS AND LURES 1. When using an artificial lure with a skirt or trailing material, no more than two single hooks may be attached to the line, leader, or trace. The hooks need not be attached separately. The eyes of the hooks must be no less than an overall hook's length (the overall length of the largest hook used) apart and no more than 12 inches (30.48 cm) apart. The only exception is that the point of one hook may be passed through the eye of the other hook. The trailing hook may not extend more than a hook's length beyond the skirt of the lure. A hook may not precede bait, lure or bait/lure combo by more than one hook’s length. A photograph or sketch showing the hook arrangement must accompany a record application.

2. Gang hooks are permitted when attached to plugs and other artificial lures that are specifically designed for this use. Gang hooks must be free swinging and shall be limited to a maximum of three hooks (single, double, or treble, or a combination of any three). Baits may not be used with gang hooks. A photograph or sketch of the plug or lure must be submitted with record applications. 3. Assist hooks or other such single hooks that are attached to a lure with a lead constructed of monofilament, multifilament, wire or other such material must conform to the following: When using assist hooks on any artificial lure, other than a skirted lure, the lead cannot be more than 1 ½ hook’s length and the bend of the hook may not be more than 4 inches (101 mm), whichever is less, from the closest point of attachment on the lure. Double and treble hooks may not be used as assist hooks I. OTHER EQUIPMENT 1. Fighting chairs may not have any mechanically propelled devices that aid the angler in fighting a fish. 2. Gimbals must be free swinging, which includes gimbals that swing in a vertical plane only. Any gimbal that allows the angler to reduce strain or to rest while fighting the fish is prohibited. 3. Gaffs and nets used to boat or land a fish must not exceed 8 feet (2.44 meters) in overall length. In using a flying or detachable gaff the rope may not exceed 30 feet (9.14 meters). The gaff rope must be measured from the point where it is secured to the detachable head to the other end. Only the effective length will be considered. If a fixed head gaff is used, the same limitations shall apply and the gaff rope shall be measured from the same location on the gaff hook. Only a single hook is permitted on any gaff. Harpoon or lance attachments are prohibited. Tail ropes are limited to 30 feet (9.14 meters). (When fishing from a bridge, pier, or other high platform or structure, this length limitation does not apply.) 4. Entangling devices, either with or without a hook, are prohibited and may not be used for any purpose including baiting, hooking, fighting, or landing the fish. 5. Outriggers, downriggers, spreader bars and kites are permitted to be used provided that the actual fishing line is attached to the snap or other release device, either directly or with some other material. The leader or double line may not be connected to the release mechanism either directly or with the use of a connecting device. Spreader bars are also acceptable when used strictly as a teaser. 6. Daisy chains, birds, floats and similar devices may only be used if they do not unfairly hamper or inhibit the normal swimming or fighting ability of the fish, thereby giving the angler or crew an unfair advantage in fighting, landing or boating the fish. 7. A safety line may be attached to the rod provided that it does not in any way assist the angler in fighting the fish. Angling Regulations 1. From the time that a fish strikes or takes a bait or lure, the angler must hook, fight, and land or boat the fish without the aid of any other person, except as provided in these regulations. 2. If a rod holder is used, once the fish is hooked, the angler must remove the rod from the rod holder as quickly as possible. 3. In the event of a multiple strike on separate lines being fished by a single angler, only the first fish fought by the angler will be considered for a world record. 4. If a double line is used, the intent of the regulations is that the fish will be fought on the single line most of the time that it takes to land the fish.

5. A harness may be attached to the reel or rod, but not to the fighting chair. The harness may be replaced or adjusted by a person other than the angler. 6. Use of a rod belt or waist gimbal is permitted. 7. When angling from a boat, once the leader is brought within the grasp of the mate, or the end of the leader is wound to the rod tip, more than one person is permitted to hold the leader. Anyone assisting a shore-bound or wading angler must be within a rods length of the angler before touching the leader or netting or gaffing the fish. 8. One or more gaffers may be used in addition to persons holding the leader. The gaff handle must be in hand when the fish is gaffed. 9. The angling and equipment regulations shall apply until the fish is weighed. The following acts will disqualify a catch: 1. Failure to comply with equipment or angling regulations. 2. The act of persons other than the angler in touching any part of the rod, reel, or line (including the double line) either bodily or with any device, from the time a fish strikes or takes the bait or lure, until the fish is either landed or released, or in giving any aid other than that allowed in the rules and regulations. If an obstacle to the passage of the line through the rod guides has to be removed from the line, then the obstacle (whether chum, floatline, rubber band, or other material) shall be held and cut free. Under no circumstances should the line be held or touched by anyone other than the angler during this process. 3. Resting the rod in a rod holder, on the gunwale of the boat, or any other object while playing the fish. 4. Handlining or using a handline or rope attached in any manner to the angler's line or leader for the purpose of holding or lifting the fish. 5. Shooting, harpooning, or lancing any fish (including sharks and halibuts) at any stage of the catch. 6. Chumming with or using as bait the flesh, blood, skin, or any part of mammals other than hair or pork rind used in lures designed for trolling or casting. 7. Using a boat or device to beach or drive a fish into shallow water in order to deprive the fish of its normal ability to swim. 8. Changing the rod or reel while the fish is being played. 9. Splicing, removing, or adding to the line while the fish is being played. 10. Intentionally foul hooking a fish. 11. Catching a fish in a manner that the double line never leaves the rod tip. 12. Using a size or kind of bait that is illegal to possess. 13. Attaching the angler's line or leader to part of a boat or other object for the purpose of holding or lifting the fish. 14. If a fish escapes before gaffing or netting and is recaptured by any method other than as outlined in the angling rules. The following situations will disqualify a catch: 1. When a rod breaks (while the fish is being played) in a manner that reduces the length of the tip below minimum dimensions or severely impairs its angling characteristics. 2. Mutilation to the fish, prior to landing or boating the catch, caused by sharks, other fish, mammals, or propellers that remove or penetrate the flesh. (Injuries caused by leader or line, scratches, old healed scars or regeneration deformities are not considered to be disqualifying injuries.) Any mutilation on the fish must be shown in a photograph and fully explained in a separate report accompanying the record application. 3. When a fish is hooked or entangled on more than one line.

Double Down by Jeff Merrill

Two proven tournament winners share their secrets to handling a multiple hook-up of billfish.

You might compare it to the tip of an iceberg; you can see some of it above the water but you’re uncertain what’s below the surface. When a single billfish shows interest in your trolling pattern, could there be others out of sight lurking below waiting to pounce on a bait in your spread? Many savvy billfish pros say it’s darn likely and working those fish into the feeding zone is the first step in catching a double, triple or more. “When you get the first bite, keep fishing and keep looking because where there’s a single, often there’s more than one,” notes Captain Danny Scotti of the Gina Lisa, a frequent billfish tournament winner in Cape May and Florida. Captain Ryan Higgins of the Viking factory demo, another team familiar with the winner’s podium from Cape May to Florida, agrees. “The best opportunity for a second or third bite is right after that first bite. That being said, with less experienced crews, if you get a bite on the left flat line and everybody’s watching that and not paying attention to the other baits, they may not have an angler in position for a second or third bite.” In this instance, using your electronics to full advantage by hitting the Save or MOB button on the GPS to note your position is one step in quickly

getting back to where the first bite occurred. One of the best steps to take to increase your odds of scoring a multiple hook-up is to simply be ready. Both skippers agree having your crew in position is critical to scoring multiple releases and each person should know ahead of time where they’ll be when the bite occurs. “Everyone is at attention and looking at the spread constantly and you’re at double attention when you get a bite,” says Scotti, adding each angler should be focused on their bait. “For instance, you’re not standing next to the flat line, you’re holding the rod in your hand, you’re not watching the line for the ‘rigger bait, the rod is in your hand. You need to be ready to react.” According to Higgins, no rod should ever be left unattended as that’s a sure way to miss a bite. “Our crew has an angler at each rod in the spread all day and if someone leaves the cockpit, another angler takes his place at the rod immediately.”

Double Down, cont. It’s also important to resist the temptation to clear all lines when you get the first bite as the more lines in the water, the better your chances of adding to your score. “Depending on the conditions, when we get a bite, the teasers, dredges and baits all stay in the water though you’ll want to reposition each of them so you don’t tangle when you turn on the fish,” says Scotti, adding what you see will dictate what you do. “Obviously if you got a look at it and have a 90-pounder on you’ll want to change your game plan and focus on one fish instead of working for more.” Higgins agrees and adds the tournament format will dictate what he does. “If we’re in a tournament and need to catch that last one to put us over the hump or if it’s based on time of catch to get the daily, that’s the only time we’ll clear lines and go after a single.” That being said, Higgins and Scotti both adjust their trolling spread when they get a bite to not only avoid a tangle but to also entice additional bites. “We’re watching the teasers and when we hook a fish, I’m not clearing them but I will pull one of them a little tighter to the boat,” says Higgins. “If it’s a teaser fish that we get the bite off, I’ll leave my squid chain out and pull the dredge a little tighter so the guys can free spool baits back without getting tangled in them.” Additionally, he feels other tactics can be employed as well. “We try to work around the fish that we’re fighting while still keeping as many baits in the water as possible without risking a tangle. If we have a couple on and we’re going back we may even put a guy on the bow and have him start trolling a bait back or we’ll even start feeding

f i s h

50

the long ‘rigger back. I don’t know many times we’ve been dead boatin’ and we’d catch one on a bait that’s drifting out of the clip.” In the end, when it comes to white marlin and sailfish, the fish will dictate to what extent lines will need to be cleared. “When you have an active fish jumping in multiple directions, coming at you and going across lines and it’s going to turn into a mess in a hurry, you may want to clear some of those lines,” notes Scotti. However, both skippers agree when a blue marlin appears in the spread and piles on a lure or bait, their philosophy about multiples changes quickly. “When we hook a blue marlin, especially on light-tackle when we’re fishing for whites, it’s clear all the lines and go get ‘em because once that fish sounds on 30-pound gear, you’re going to be on it for a long time,” notes Higgins. Scotti agrees. “If you’re blue marlin fishing, on the bite, you’re done. You’re not looking for a second or third fish.” One tactic both Scotti and Higgins find effective for scoring multiples is turning at the bite. Since white marlin and sailfish often travel in pods, it’s quite possible only one fish from the pod may have shown initial interest in your spread and additional work to get the others to feed may be required. Circling back around in the area where the bite occurred is a proven tactic many pros utilize. “Nine out of ten times, especially with whites and sails, there’s more than one fish swimming around and when you get a bite, it’s just a question if you’re going to get another bite or not,” says Scotti, adding electronics again come into play. “There might be a pod of

tales

2012 ON THE RIP

www.OnTheRipMagazine.com

Double Down, cont. fish swimming down at 60 feet and one of them peeled off to eat. You’ll see that on the machine sometimes where you’ll mark multiple fish but only get bit by one. Also, you may mark the pod and not get bit at all so you swing back around a second time and not get bit, then finally on the third pass one comes up to eat and sometimes that triggers a multiple bite.” Scotti also feels the direction of the turn is really going to depend on where the fish that’s hooked is going which will allow him to keep the spread out. “You don’t want to turn the wrong way. If the fish ate the right ‘rigger and if he went off that side in the clear, he’s going to go that way and you need to focus on where he’s at before making a circle back.” Higgins also adds where the bite occurred will dictate which direction he turns and he says you have to be patient. “If I get a bite on the left flat line, I turn in that direc-

f i s h

52

tion though sometimes with multiples when there’s a wolf pack and you get three or four on, you just go straight back. Other times, when you have a single on, you may do one or two circles around that fish and then get bit again. The guys who don’t have the patience to do that definitely catch fewer multiples.” Higgins acknowledges other factors will play a role in how aggressive he is with scoring a multiple hook-up. “Keep in mind if it’s early in the season in Cape May and the best day of the year so far has been catching four or five fish, you’re just hoping to catch that many. In this case you need to pay attention to every bite you get and not worry so much about multiples. If it’s late in the season and on the big days you’re catching 20 or 30 of them, you know there’s a much better shot at a multiple. That’s when I’ll work a single bite hard and circle back several times if I have to in order to get additional bites.” Higgins and Scotti both relayed the best scenario is always to go for the closest fish first, though that’s not always possible, especially when they are uncooperative. “When they go 180 degrees from each other and you get half a spool of line out on both fish on either side of the boat, you can’t chase one without spooling the other reel. At that point you have to depend on the fish settling down and the angler actually reeling the fish in to regain line instead of an easy wind when the boat’s in reverse chasing the fish or running it down. Keep in mind, the more line in the water, the more drag on it, so you must consider

tales

2012 ON THE RIP

www.OnTheRipMagazine.com

Double Down, cont. easing the drag off a bit to prevent breaking a line,” explains Scotti. Higgins agrees, adding, “You have to be patient when you get split by a multiple. There’s only so much you can do. You sometimes have to just hang tight until one of the fish changes direction and you can go get it. You have to be careful when you’re

moving away from one fish to get another that you don’t break a line.” So what’s more difficult a multiple hook-up of tuna or billfish? According to Scotti, it depends. “With tunas we’re going to boat the fish whereas with billfish, depending on if it’s a tournament or not, we may be using up to a 30-foot leader. Finishing the job is where it becomes difficult since there’s a big difference between releasing a white marlin and taking a white marlin. It’s a bit more involved to get him the last 30 feet and boat him versus grabbing the leader and getting the release,” says Scotti adding the size of the tackle comes in to play as well. “Are you picking up 80’s or 130’s and moving them around the cockpit or did you get the double on 30’s you can hold with one hand? The tunas are going to be more settled and that’s a matter of learning how to take them in order.” When multiple billfish appear in the spread, whether we’re fun fishing or going to battle in the Mid-Atlantic $500,000, it can be an exciting, frustrating, rewarding or heartbreaking sequence of events. It takes practice and experience to become proficient though it’s unrealistic not to expect to lose a few fish. That’s simply part of the learning curve. “Catching multiple fish in a tournament or when fun fishing whether they’re white marlin, sailfish or tuna, makes or breaks your day. You fish eight hours in a day and when fishing is slow you might only see fish once or twice, regardless of what species you’re fishing for,” notes Scotti. “You need to make the best of each opportunity.”
