Economic burden of Atopic Dermatitis • Most cases of atopic dermatitis are mild and are managed in primary care1 • However, moderate to severe atopic dermatitis causes over €2 billion in lost productivity in the EU2 every year

Challenges to achieving effective long-term management of Atopic Dermatitis Gaps in patient education
Gaps in physician education
• Confusion about AD aetiology • Search for a definite cure and lack of recognition of AD as a chronic disease • Lack of involvement in treatment decisions • Inadequate knowledge and self-management skills • Fear of short-term/long-term side effects
• Confusion about AD aetiology • Lack of recognition of AD as a chronic disease • Little awareness of psychosocial impact • Lack of expertise regarding treatment strategy and follow-up • Confusion about maintenance treatment concept • Lack of understanding of benefit/risk ratio of topical treatment
Low priority for AD Poor patient adherence Concept of maintenance treatment not adopted
Achieving effective long-term management of Atopic Dermatitis • Compliance – the degree to which the patient follows the medication regimen – is critical to outcomes1,2 • Adherence – the ability of patient and doctor to jointly decide the treatment strategy • Concordance – agreement about the medication regimen – places the patient at the centre of care and is central to adherence1,2 1. Ntuen E, et al. J Dermatol Treat 2010; 21:28–33; 2. Marinker M, et al. Br Med J 2003; 326:348–349.
How can adherence be optimised? • Adherence to topical therapies can be increased by: More frequent patient contact
Clear instructions
Education about the disease course
Education about the rationale for the therapeutic strategy
• Adherence to therapy may be poor, even in severe atopic dermatitis • Poor adherence may lead to treatment failure and substantial costs Patient education is the cornerstone of optimising adherence
