Cgrowth in knowledge of the faith November 17th • 6 - 7 pm in the Parish Hall

Our topic this month is “The Year of Mercy” Our Speaker is Deacon Bill Ditewig. From Pope Francis’ address: Dear brothers and sisters, I have often thought about how the Church might make clear its mission of being a witness to mercy. It is journey that begins with a spiritual conversion. For this reason, I have decided to call an extraordinary Jubilee that is to have the mercy of God at its center. It shall be a Holy Year of Mercy. We want to live this year in the light of the Lord’s words: “Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful. (cf. Lk 6:36)” The Year of Mercy begins this Advent. Come enjoy a presentation from the Diocesan Director of Faith Formation, Deacon Bill Ditewig. Deacon Bill has authored numerous books, chapters and articles. He has a BA in Philosophy, an MA in Education, an MA in Pastoral Theology, and the Ph.D. from the School of Theology and Religious Studies at the Catholic University of America, with a major emphasis in ecclesiology. Specific research interests include the history and theology of the Second Vatican Council, sacramental theologies of ministry, and liturgical catechesis. Come and See! Bring a friend! From: Bishop Garcia SUBJECT: New Movie Concerning the Church Sex Abuse Scandal

“Spotlight” is a major motion picture opening in select markets on November 6, 2015 that tells the story of how the Boston Globe newspaper’s Spotlight Investigative Unit uncovered the child sex abuse scandal in the Archdiocese of Boston in 2002. It will go into limited release on November 6, 2015 and national release on November 20, 2015. Vatican Radio has praised the film as “honest” and “compelling,” saying that the Globe’s coverage of the scandal – for which it won a Pulitzer Prize – helped the Church in the United States “to accept fully the sin, to admit it publicly and to pay the consequences.” After premiering at the Venice Film Festival, “Spotlight” received excellent reviews and is being considered a leading Oscar candidate. If anything, the film reminds us that the sex abuse scandal is not something to “put behind us,” but instead is something we need to keep in front of us at all times so we can stay vigilant and make sure never happens again.

EFLECTION OF THE WEEK

November 15, 2015 33rd Sunday of Ordinary Time Mark’s community lived in a time of persecution, uneasiness and discouragement. They needed hope and Mark supplied it in his presentation of Jesus just before the story of his passion, death and resurrection. Some people call this portion of Mark’s Gospel “Little Apocalypse” because it refers to events in the end times. Certain occurrences will be visible before Jesus returns and Mark has Jesus say words that help his community look for signs. The words in this Gospel indicate that “this” generation will not pass away before “these things have taken place.” What is not exactly clear is what things, but the most important point is that the people of Mark’s community find hope in Jesus’ return.

Social Justice Ministry Meets the first Tuesday of every month at 7 pm in the Serra Center. Join us to learn what our new projects are, and what you can do to help. Next weekend, as we do every year, a second collection is taken up to benefit a charity selected by members of the Social Justice Ministry. This year, we are honored to support Rita’s Rainbows, a non-profit charity organized to serve the memory of Rita Marie Goehner, a wonderful young woman who died in 2006. This amazing group provides assistance both financially and through programs to benefit children and teens who demonstrate a need. The list of those they help in our community is too long to print here. 100% of this collection will go directly to the children and teens. The officers receive no compensation. There is a separate account for operations and they rely on volunteers and donors to make the difference. Upcoming events include a “Cowgirl Trade Show” at the Alex Madonna Expo Center on November 27 and 28. On December 5, do your Christmas shopping at the “Rainbow of Treasures” at the SLO Grange Hall from 10 am to 5 pm, with beautiful and unique handmade crafts. This month at the Gift Shop: We have wonderful Children’s books that will appeal to the child in all of us. If you are looking for a special gift remember that a book is a gift you open again and again. As we honor the year of Mercy we will have select items to inspire you. Prayer cards and such that remind us that kindness and mercy are a way of life. Our books for and about Pope Francis will be in soon – they were very popular as we are inspired by his message. There are beautiful hand-made Rosaries from Ecuador made from the nut of the Tagua tree. It is a sustainable product both unique and environmentally friendly. Of course there is a nice selection of our own hand made Rosaries. We have been doing this now for quite some time and we so enjoy this special ministry. In addition there is our ever popular Folk Art from Latin America and beyond. Whimsical Nativities are a number one seller and so we invite you to come in and browse – sit a while and read – listen to the music or share a little fellowship. Our staff is friendly, knowledgeable, and eager to be of service. We are here 7 days a week from 9-4 pm or visit us online @ missionsanluisobisp.org
