Trade Secrets Resource Guide Welcome to TRADE SECRETS 2014! Our two-day event, on May 17 and 18, which started in my backyard more than 10 years ago, has become a much-anticipated local tradition. This is the foremost fundraiser for Women’s Support Services (WSS), which offers crisis intervention, counseling, and education, as well as legal, medical, and housing assistance to fulfill its mission of creating a community free of domestic violence. I take a huge amount of pride in seeing how TRADE SECRETS has grown into one of New England’s finest annual horticultural outings. For the sixth year, we are publishing the TRADE SECRETS RESOURCE GUIDE, within which you will find a wealth of resources. The guide will also introduce you to the premier landscape professionals, home designers, home and garden destinations, area lodging, dining, and more. We hope you will read it, enjoy it, and take it home with you to use as a directory of the area’s finest businesses. We want to thank all those who advertise in the TRADE SECRETS RESOURCE GUIDE. Their dollars, along with the contributions of many generous individuals, enable WSS to fulfill its mission. This work is also made possible by the large number of WSS volunteers. Without their dedication and efforts, TRADE SECRETS would not have become such an outstanding event. Finally, many thanks to you, our generous event attendees. We continue to live in uncertain times; your involvement and the resources of WSS are needed more than ever to help families in crisis. Enjoy the weekend. With much appreciation,

Bunny Williams “One of the few events that goes onto my calendar a year in advance is the Trade Secrets Rare Plant and Garden Antiques Show in Sharon, CT. Why? Because I find amazing varieties of plants, meet all kinds of extraordinary gardeners and find many antiques and tools for my own garden. It’s exciting, very beautiful, and benefits Women’s Support Services in Northwest CT – a most worthy cause.” - Martha Stewart

About Women’s Support Services Women’s Emergency Services (WES) came to be in 1979, created in the words of one of our founders, “because we knew that violence was going on and we decided we had to reach out to those women who felt so alone. After all, some of those women were some of us.” The new agency initially depended on informal donations to pay for basic needs and to provide part-time volunteer coverage of the office, located in a space donated by Sharon Hospital. WES was officially incorporated in 1981 as a not-forprofit agency to meet the needs of victims of domestic violence in the Northwest Corner of Connecticut. The first training for volunteer hotline workers took place in February of 1982. A part-time coordinator was hired in September of 1982, by which time 17 crisis calls had been received, and two women and four children were sheltered in volunteers’ homes. WES’s first program coordinator, Sue Kirber, was hired in January of 1983, and the first newsletter was mailed to the community. The need for WES services continued to expand. By September of 1983, 85 crisis calls were received and 15 women and 30 children were sheltered. In early 1985, WES contracted with the state of Connecticut to serve the six-town area that includes Kent, Cornwall, Salisbury, Canaan, Falls Village, and Sharon. The agency also assisted residents in nearby New York and Massachusetts who could not access other services. WES continued to expand, and relied heavily on community volunteers for hotline coverage and to assist clients in need of shelter, court advocacy, transportation, and other services. The WES staff continued to grow and by 1994 it included a full-time program director, two part-time community educators, and one part-time counselor/ advocate. It averaged 40 hotline calls per month and sheltered about 1 in 4 women experience 11 women and their children a domestic violence in year. By 1997, a full-time position their lives. of child advocate and community - National Violence Against Women Survey, 2000 educator assumed responsibility for counseling and advocating for the needs of clients’ children, and functioned as the WES community educator in the local schools. Volunteer training groups were held twice a year, and volunteers covered the 24-hour hotline each evening and all weekend. 2

About Women’s Support Services In 1999, WES changed its name to Women’s Support Services, Inc. (WSS) to better reflect the broad range of services the agency provides and to diminish the focus of offering only emergency services. In 2001, the WSS Board purchased a permanent office location in Sharon, where the agency relocated in September of 2002. The new office provided sufficient Nearly 1 in 5 teen space to maintain client confidentiality, girls report being an improved work environment for threatened by their staff, and increased visibility for the boyfriends. agency. Client numbers, especially -Teenage Research Unlimited, 2005 walk-in clients, increased significantly after the relocation. In 2002, WSS received funding for a part-time Family Violence Victim Advocate at Bantam Court. This individual ensured that victims were informed of their rights, had a voice in court, and had an advocate during the legal proceedings. WSS again saw an increase in numbers of clients after this position was created. In 2001, the WSS Board undertook a new spring fundraising event, Trade Secrets, developed as an annual rare plant and garden antiques sale with the help of community member Bunny Williams and her head gardener (and WSS Board member) Naomi Blumenthal. The income from Trade Secrets helped WSS purchase a permanent home and enabled the agency to expand programs and increase direct grants to clients for their critical needs. Proceeds from Trade Secrets continue to support the vital work of the agency.

Who Does Women’s Support Services Help?* Twelve-year-old Jack was referred to Women’s Support Services (WSS) by his mother, a former client who had experienced emotional and physical abuse from her exhusband, Jack’s father. His mother was concerned that Jack had

started to exhibit batterer behaviors and hoped that our Child Advocate (CA) could educate him on healthy relationships, conflict resolution, and self-esteem. Over several meetings, the CA and Jack spoke in depth about the relationships in his life and what is healthy and unhealthy. Jack shared how he reacts when he is angry: yelling, stomping, and throwing things. The CA worked with him to develop his problem-solving skills and de-escalation techniques. She also educated him on the dynamics of abuse and how what happened between his parents was not his fault, which Jack still struggles to accept. Despite this, Jack indicates that he deals with his anger and conflicts in a healthier manner.

Fifty-five-year-old Jennifer was referred for continuing WSS services by the agency’s Family Violence Victim Advocate (FVVA) following her arrest for a domestic violence incident.

Jennifer had suffered physical, emotional, and financial abuse from her husband and his daughter throughout their relationship. Our FVVA provided her with counseling about the judicial process and what to expect in the criminal court. After meeting with Jennifer and assessing her case, our Adult Counselor Advocate (ACA) advocated to her Court Support Services Division (CSSD) worker that she be referred to WSS for counseling instead of to the Family Violence Education Program as she is the primary victim in the abusive relationship and the violence that led to her arrest was resistive violence in response to her husband’s battering. Jennifer’s CSSD worker allows her to attend our weekly support group. As she works with WSS, she is provided education on the dynamics of abuse, safety planning, and the legal system. Her safety planning revolves around leaving her marriage, which she feels is over. She has also received support and information about employment and subsidized housing referrals so she can increase her income and find a safe place to live. The ACA successfully advocated on Jennifer’s behalf for her to receive funds for a security deposit and rent to secure safe housing. 6

Who Does Women’s Support Services Help?* WSS provided short-term shelter services to Charla, a 45-year-old woman referred to us from another domestic violence agency in CT. Charla had fled an abusive marriage; her

safety plan was to move out of state where she has support to start her life over. WSS provided her shelter for three days, during which our Adult Counselor Advocate (ACA) helped her weigh her choices (woman-defined advocacy) as to how she could safely retrieve her belongings and her pet from her abuser’s home (safety planning). In addition to short-term shelter, WSS provided Charla with gas cards to supplement what she had received from the referring domestic violence program to ensure she could safely make it to her destination. In addition to safety planning, she also received support and education on interpersonal violence and definitions of abuse.

An important component of WSS’s community education initiative is the annual Operation Jungle Red (OJR) anti-violence event that our Community Educator (CE) facilitates in local schools during October, which is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. OJR is a

campaign that started at Miami University (Ohio) to commemorate the anniversary of the Virginia Tech shooting. The one-day program starts a conversation about acts of violence committed every day. Participants sign an anti-violence pledge and display a visible marker meant to spark discussion about violence and focus awareness on their cause. This school year, WSS’s CE brought OJR events to Housatonic Valley Regional High School and Marvelwood School in Connecticut and Dover High School and Middle School and Webutuck High School and Middle School in New York. 2013’s OJR participants numbered 1128 in four schools, up from 2012’s total of 639 in two schools.

Our Volunteers This will be my fourth year of volunteering for Trade Secrets. Since I moved up to the Northwest Corner eight years ago, I have been impressed by Women’s Support Services and their outreach to women in need. To be able to help women in trouble giving support that is needed, not only impacts the individual but family and community as well. Because my career was in the world of journalism, I became very aware of women’s issues and how important this support Gretchen Babarovic is, not only on the local level but for the global community as well - it’s far reaching. The Trade Secrets event accomplishes two things. As a fundraiser, it provides income for Women’s Support Services which is much needed and through volunteering, it not only brings in much needed manpower for the two days it runs, but it is a chance to bring the community together. It provides the opportunity to meet new people - both participants/ vendors as well as buyers who now come from all over the country. It’s great fun meeting new people, helping vendors and seeing all the things that enhance a garden from plants to garden furniture et al. I am delighted to be a part of this on all levels.

I’ve been volunteering with Trade Secrets since 2005: 2005 and 2006 as a garden volunteer; 2007 through 2009 as a garden captain; and 2010 through 2013 as a garden tour co-chairperson. I feel it’s important to contribute to the community that has given me so much. I’m always so moved by the efforts of all the accomplished gardeners/garden owners who so generously share their talents with us, and I’ve loved getting to know so many wonderful people who volunteer at Trade Secrets each year.

Our Volunteers

Christopher Baetz I’ve been volunteering for Trade Secrets for four years. I do it to support Women’s Support Services, which provides an essential service to women in the community. As a longtime advocate for women’s health and legal issues, and a practitioner in the legal, mental health, and health and wellness fields, I am committed to doing my part to support this critical resource. I have served WSS as a hotline worker and a legal volunteer, and at Trade Secrets in most every workerbee capacity (runner, vendor assistant, food service, loading area). I am looking forward to another great experience this year. 13

Our Volunteers

Emma, Clifton & Louise Jaeger The team that founded Trade Secrets reached out to the local community for volunteers starting the first year Bunny Williams, a Falls Village neighbor, hosted the event in her garden. Since then I’ve worked most every year as a vendor assistant and if needed as a parking host on Sunday for the garden tour. In 2003 my business enjoyed participating with a vendor booth. This organization has a strong volunteer program that makes it easy to participate. The requests are specific, instructions are detailed, and they take good care of us throughout the day. Volunteering for Trade Secrets appeals to me because the money raised is spent locally helping women in crisis. As the father of two daughters, it is important to me that they see how giving your time and hard work can make a difference in the community. I also enjoy seeing the extraordinary plants, antiques, and garden accessories brought in by the vendors. The volunteers hauled a lot of plants around last year, and we look forward to putting on our aprons again this year for another successful event. 15

Our Volunteers I admit it: I became a volunteer for selfish reasons. I wanted to see the gardens. So, in 2008, I volunteered to work at a garden and was assigned to be a tour tickettaker and docent. I started the morning helping set up the table and arranging cookies on a platter, then taking tickets and starting people off on their tour. Later in the morning, I got to tell them about the section of garden they were viewing and to direct them Jane Kellner to the next spot. Glorious. In the afternoon, I visited the rest of the venues. I was hooked. The next year, I went to the sale on Saturday, too, and took tickets on Sunday. I’ve helped show people where to park (sometimes it’s a relay); been stationed at a point in a garden to ensure the spot is protected and patrons are safe and informed; unpacked and set up; packed up at the end; and lately, been a garden co-captain who makes sure everything is in tip-top condition when we leave the premises. Volunteering is something I’ve done since moving to the Northwest Corner in 1999; it allows me to give back to and nurture the community—my community—in a very hands-on way. I think the gift of time makes the money gathered go farther for the cause. I also love taking care of the tourgoers and the volunteers I work with. So, I get to make a difference and I get a free pass. 17

Amy Lake I think I’ve been volunteering at Trade Secrets maybe four to five years as both garden sitter/interpreter and server/bartender at the vendor dinner. Everybody wins when volunteering for Trade Secrets: the work is fun, I meet new people, and the event raises much-needed revenue for an underfunded and essential community service agency.

I was fortunate enough to start with Trade Secrets at the very beginning when it was held at Bunny Williams’ home. A memorable time was when it snowed, making it a challenge getting the cars to the pickup area and then getting those plants in the cars. I later served as the cochair of Trade Secrets when it moved to the Wake Robin Inn. Michael and Shaffin, the owners, were very welcoming and accommodating. It was Jo Loi a beautiful relationship where they provided the food, had accommodations in the main house for the Early Bird participants and motel rooms on the property for the vendors. When Trade Secrets moved to LionRock Farm, I helped with drop-off and pick-up; as a troubleshooter; as a vendor assistant; and with parking cars at various gardens on Sunday. Why do I do this? Women’s Support Services’ mission and role in our community is very important and necessary. Domestic abuse to men and women are problems that not only affect the adults but also the children. How can this be a problem in such a beautiful, idyllic place as the Northwest Corner? This silent, out-of-sight problem does exist, more than we would want to admit. Abuse crosses all socio-economic classes. For that reason, WSS is an invaluable resource to support in our community. It is my honor to be part of this effort to make sure WSS has the funds to do what it needs to do. 21

Nina Otterson has been volunteering with Trade Secrets/Women’s Support Services since moving to the area 9 years ago. Usually accompanied by her daughters and at least a few members of her Hotchkiss JV lacrosse team, she is a familiar sight at the annual garden sale. “I really enjoy helping out at the sale and doing what I can to make it a success. Women’s Support Services does important work and I feel lucky to have such a fun way to help them. From parking cars to helping carry plants for people, there is no shortage of work that needs to be done and the sale just seems to be getting bigger and more interesting every year.”

From Kathy: We first volunteered in 2008 for the Sunday garden tours. We parked cars at Bunny Williams’ in the pouring rain. It is a wonder we returned the following year, but we did, volunteering both days. Our “preferred” spot for the Saturday sale seems to be pick-up and loading, though one year we directed visitors for parking. (That was a blustery cold day on the hill, but great fun greeting the sale goers as they arrived.) The early pick-up and loading area is a great place

to see all the wonderful plants and gardening items that people are taking home. There is a camaraderie among the volunteers – the vendors, the runners and the loaders – that makes the morning fly by. I am always inspired and a bit sore at the end of our shift, with great plans to go home and attack my gardens. Unfortunately, I am not a successful gardener! Sundays have found us volunteering at the ticket tables as well as parking. And while the sale usually has great weather, the garden tours, with the exception of one year, seem to attract the rain. Somehow, it doesn’t seem to matter! I am always impressed and humbled by the generosity of the volunteers who return every year to make the Trade Secrets weekend possible. It is such a privilege to be part of that group, and to know that we are supporting a worthy local cause. Bea and I get to spend some quality time time together and, of course, we do some shopping. She, unlike me, is a very successful gardener! I look forward to volunteering again this year. From Bea: I have volunteered at Trade Secrets for five years. My duties have included event parking in the cornfield/traffic control, garden tour parking on the roadways, ticket taking/ selling at the garden tours and the very exciting and fast paced scramble at the pick-up area. We live in an enviable and idyllic part of the country. However, in my 30 years working in a public safety career I have seen the need for the services offered by Women’s Support Services. The Trade Secrets event enables WSS to continue its mission of providing the help and resources they alone offer to the citizens in our neighborhoods. I volunteer knowing this is something I can do now to support the mission of Women’s Support Services. The event is thrilling and fun. It brings different sights and excitement to our community.

Our Volunteers Eva Yxfeldt remembers her first year as a Trade Secrets volunteer at the Wake Robin Inn, where she was in charge of carrying (or wheelbarrowing) customers’ purchases from the merchants to a pick-up area where customers drove up to load their trunks. The following year, she was stationed at the pick-up area helping customers find their purchases and, again, loading their cars up. At LionRock Farm, Eva spent a few years at the pick-up area, sometimes in freezing Eva Yxfeldt weather, braving strong winds and pouring rain, but most often in glorious sunshine. “There is a great camaraderie between the volunteers, and we have all gotten to know one another throughout the years,” she said. “Trade Secrets is such a happy event – merchants bring out their best and buyers come ready to shop for their gardens, whether plants, trees, antique furniture and decorative items, or just to support a good cause while having lunch in one of the beautiful barns on the property.” The last two years, Eva was promoted to the position of “greeter” – a far less strenuous job. Just smiling and welcoming guests and buyers as if they were your old friends, very often a true statement. Getting kisses and hugs all day long is a reward as good as any for spending a day at the beautiful LionRock Farm.

Our Volunteers

Sarah Zarbock & John Hoffman I can’t recall the first time that I volunteered for Trade Secrets but I know that I went to the event from its very beginning. Not long thereafter, I was asked to serve on the Women’s Support Services Board of Directors, and I then took the training to become a hotline volunteer. I now always mark the advent of spring by volunteering at Trade Secrets – whether carving endless cantaloupes for the food court; hauling a garden cart from merchants to the pick-up area; or spending some of my money on sweet peas, an array of herbs, or a special garden ornament to add to my collection. My husband, John, also joined the volunteer ranks doing some of the heavier lifting. Beautifying one’s garden annually is always enjoyable but supporting WSS’s cause is really what Trade Secrets is all about. The event is a wonderful synergy of finding garden beauty while funding crucial services for those who need them. John and I look forward every year to being part of this very important effort. 33

Trade Secrets Garden Tour ~ Sunday, May 18, 2014 Tickets for the Garden Tour on Sunday, May 18, 2014 may be purchased during the Rare Plant & Antiques Sale on May 17 or at any of the gardens on Sunday. Maps to the gardens will be available at a kiosk at LionRock Farm on Sunday. DEBBY & BARTON JONES In 1989, a freak tornado destroyed the tall spruce trees shading a small garden behind the classic Greek Revival house that Debby and Barton Jones purchased 14 years ago. Doing almost all the work themselves, they have transformed the space into a meandering garden, randomly traversed by paths and stone steps, and filled with old roses, clematis, old-fashioned perennials, and hundreds of spring bulbs. Other features include a formal crab apple allée, two nepeta allées planted with tiny narcissi, a potager garden close to the house, and a small vegetable garden across the road. JULIA & JOHN SCOTT (GOLD’S MILLS & GARDENS) At the 18th-century gristmill that is now their home, John and Julia Scott have created a series of very different gardens on the surrounding steep and rocky hillside. The main drama is a magnificent waterfall that plunges more than 60 feet and weaves its way through preCambrian rocks and boulders. The upper garden, adjoining the millpond, has traditional shrubs, perennials beds, and a cutting garden. Closer to the house, an early-spring and wildflower garden borders the waterfall, while a series of terraces and an orchard effect the transition to the lower water garden. ROXANA & LEDLIE LAUGHLIN (HENRY’S HILL) Bounded by traditional New England stone walls, this garden is framed by majestic old trees and surrounded by undulating fields. Roxana’s family had owned the property for more than 50 years, but when she inherited it in 2001 she asked Tiziana Hardy to redesign the large perennial border that wraps around three sides of a lawn. In the center, Hardy has created an arresting tableau of large flat stones and mounded boxwood. With additional design input from Mary Daalhuyzen, sweeps of hydrangeas, ornamental grasses, and a series of linked ponds make up the rest of this intentionally understated garden landscape. BUNNY WILLIAMS & JOHN ROSSELLI Here’s a sterling opportunity to eavesdrop on Bunny Williams and John Rosselli’s affair with their house. The garden around their Falls Village home is always a treat, but in springtime, it’s particularly sublime. Not only will you find tulips and bulbs galore carpeting the formal garden, but John’s vegetable and cutting garden will be gearing up. Hike up to the Greek temple-style pool house (featured in House & Garden) by way of the old orchard with heirloom apple trees blossoming. Stroll around the primrose- and wildflower-dense woodland pond (featured in Garden Design) when its charms are popping out all over. Promenade through the arbors and partake of the focal points. Witness not only the wildflowers, but the wildlife as well – doves and various other fowl flutter around. Plus, on the property’s final frontier, winged houseguests feather their nests in the new “birdhouse village.” Bring a pad to jot down ideas, because Williams/Rosselli – tastemakers par excellence – incorporated their unabridged arsenal of design insight into their own warm and cozy country place.
