Standard Bridge Drawing Updates
Enclosed are copies of the following Standard Bridge Drawings: •
Prestressed Concrete I-Beam Bridge Details (PSID-1-99)
•
Capped Pile Abutment (CPA-1-08)
•
Capped Pile Pier (CPP-1-08)
•
Continuous Slab Bridges (CS-1-08)
•
Single Span Slab Bridge (SB-1-08)
A brief summary of changes for each of the above Standard Bridge Drawings follows: PSID-1-99: On sheet 1 of 8, the top flange width of the Modified AASHTO Type 4 (72”) beam section has been increased from 36” to 48”. This change was requested by the Ohio Prestressers Association in order to stiffen the section and increase resistance to handling and shipping stresses. The Section Properties and reinforcing steel schedule were modified accordingly. On sheet 6 of 8, the Diaphragm Dimensions “A”, “B”, “C”, “D” and “E” for the 36” and 54” Beam Height were modified. This correction provides sufficient space for the 3” x 3” x 5/16” plate washers required in the connection. The previous dimensions created conflicts between the plate washers and the channel flanges. CPA-1-08: This is a new drawing for Capped Pile Abutments that meets the requirements of the AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications, 4th Edition, 2007, including the 2008 interim specifications. The keyway attachment of the slab superstructure to the abutment has been replaced with a steel reinforced connection. The proposed detail eliminates the primary source of deterioration with slab bridges, spalling of the bearing seats. Our office believes this spalling resulted during expansion/contraction of the superstructure when the force to
deform the foundation exceeded the strength of the shear key. Additionally, salt-laden water entering at the vertical joint between the end of the slab and the beginning of the approach slab would saturate the bearing seat and hasten deterioration. The proposed abutment detail will no longer provide a direct path for surface water to reach the bearing seat. CPP-1-08: This is a new drawing for Capped Pile Piers that meets the requirements of the AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications, 4th Edition, 2007, including the 2008 interim specifications. Under previous editions of the AASHTO specifications, the pier cap was designed assuming that any one pile in any three consecutive piles might not have sufficient bearing to support axial loads. This ODOT specific provision no longer applies for the proposed design because the resulting design requirements under LRFD live loading were no longer considered economically reasonable. CS-1-08: This is a new drawing for Continuous Slab Bridges that meets the requirements of the AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications, 4th Edition, 2007, including the 2008 interim specifications. The details of this new drawing are compatible with CPA-1-08 and CPP-108. SB-1-08: This is a new drawing for Single Span Slab Bridges that meets the requirements of the AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications, 4th Edition, 2007, including the 2008 interim specifications. The details of this new drawing are compatible with CPA-1-08 and CPP-108.
