Large profits to be made from oil and gas With the creation of around 7,000 jobs in the offshore sector towards 2020, there is no doubt that this sector will, indeed, go on being a significant part of Danish economy in the future. Growth in the sector will also ensure Denmark’s position as the world’s strongest offshore wind nation, and with a very important oil and gas extraction contributing significantly to the overall welfare of Denmark.

T

here is a great potential for growth in the Danish offshore sector. This is the reason for the establishment of the national innovation network and knowledge centre Offshoreenergy.dk: if Denmark is to gain the maximum advantage of the offshore sector’s great potential, we must make sure collaboration and partnerships across the sector thrive even more than has hitherto been the case. It makes good sense to unite the fields of oil/gas and renewables in one centre in that the vast majority of the players in the sector are involved in both classic offshore activities (oil and gas) and green offshore (renewables). Offshoreenergy.dk contributes to ensuring Danish jobs and to preserving Denmark’s strong, international position in both fields. This is why Offshoreenergy.dk unites knowledge in the one sector with knowledge in the other and focuses on both fields as equally important partners that can ensure Denmark’s future in the field of offshore. Offshorenergy.dk has some clear objectives on which we base our navigation in order to support and develop the sector in the best possible way.

In relation to oil and gas, this means we help the sector move towards increasing the degree of extraction from existing fields. Over the course of 20 years, the degree of extraction has increased from 8-10% to 25-30%. There are, indeed, many potential great gains in the offshore sector. However, it will take commitment to obtain them. It will require a focus on training of staff for the sector to make sure a lack of, for instance, engineers does not inhibit growth. And it will require a focus on making sure more Danish companies become able to offer service and maintenance of platforms and installations. Not least will it require Denmark to be way ahead of our competitors all the time. However, this will definitely be possible if the players in the entire sector navigate towards the same goals: collaboration, exchange of knowledge and development of our knowhow. Offshore sector expanding at full speed Production of oil and gas is optimised and developed to cover global energy consumption

I

t may be hard to spot it from the shore, but the Danish offshore sector is expanding and optimising its operations at full speed. On the installations in the North Sea, a few hundred kilometres from Jutland’s west-coast, a great effort is being done to keep up with demand for oil and natural gas. In order to prevent falling production, new techniques are regularly put to use to find new fields, and research is done to come up with methods that can help optimise exploitation of existing fields. Advanced drilling techniques, 3D seismic and the application of small, remote-controlled installations have made it possible to look for and exploit fields in new areas, and the Danish Energy Agency is about to allow exploration drillings in hitherto unexploited areas in the North Sea through the so-called seventh bidding round. Director Peter Blach, Offshoreenergy.dk Oil & Gas, observes: “The seventh bidding round is about inviting oil companies to explore new areas and shows that interest in looking for new oil fields is great. The offshore sector is optimistic and has faith in the future, which is why we’re currently seeing a great effort being done by oil companies and operators to explore new ways of looking for energy resources.” He adds: “Apart from the fact that significant amounts of money is invested in searching for entirely new fields, a lot of resources are used also to develop techniques that can increase exploitation of existing fields. All this will help maintain Denmark’s position as self-sufficient with energy for many years ahead, and the estimated period of time in which production can be upheld is extended all the time.”

The world needs oil and gas

The national innovation network and knowledge centre Offshoreenergy.dk follows closely

developments in the offshore sector – also internationally. As development goes on in the North Sea, many Danish companies are establishing themselves in Norway, the Middle East or Africa in order to make use of special Danish expertise of exploitation of hard-to-reach fields and commercial exploitation of small fields. “The world needs energy, and oil and gas contribute significantly to covering the need for energy. This is why a lot of work is being done in the North Sea and in foreign markets to develop and optimise production. And Danish companies possess the expertise that’s needed to be part of what happens on the international scene,” says Peter Blach.

Taking up deep water challenge with record-setting pipeline

Along with his colleagues from Ramboll Oil & Gas in Copenhagen and Esbjerg, Kristoffer Bergholt is planning Statoil’s 481 kilometre Polarled pipeline from the Aasta Hansteen field north of the Arctic Circle to the Nyhamna Gas Facility on the west coast of Norway. It is the first time that a 36” pipeline is installed at a water depth of 1,265 metres. For Kristoffer Bergholt, setting a world record has meant a tremendous professional and personal development. “Due to the scope of the project, the sheer amount of calculations has been immense. We have had to rethink the method with

which we can perform this assignment most suitably, and the complexity of the project has meant that we have continually developed new tools for the programs,” says Kristoffer Bergholt who is based at Ramboll in Copenhagen’s Ørestad district. Glacial canyons in the seabed have presented the engineers with major challenges. In several places the pipeline will be suspended in long, free spans across the canyons. It has been extremely difficult to calculate these free spans, and Ramboll has had to invent a tool for this purpose. The new software has been named FRAN, short for Free Span Analysis, and thanks to FRAN Ramboll will have an advantage at future projects of a similar nature. Due to the complexity of the project, Ramboll Oil & Gas has involved several of the engineering company’s specialized units both in Ørestad and Esbjerg including the geotechnical, materials, risk and environmental units. “We are operating in a highly advanced environment with some real experts from Statoil and the contractor, who will install the pipeline, so there is a lot of experience and expertise to draw from. Everybody is participating with great enthusiasm and is proactive in terms of trying to solve the common challenges,” says Kristoffer Bergholt, who holds an M.Sc. in Engineering from the Technical University of Denmark and is specialized in applied mechanics. www.ramboll.com/oil-gas

Denmark’s innovation network & knowledge centre boosted by restructuring and a stronger board

Denmark’s national innovation network and knowledge centre for the offshore sector has undergone restructuring, and a strong, new board has been appointed. The aim is for the members’ interests to be better represented in the fields of oil and gas production and green energy at sea

T

he offshore sector has grown explosively since the sector’s national innovation network and knowledge centre, Offshore Center Danmark, was founded 10 years ago. This was the reason for the restructuring in the spring, when the organisation’s board also expanded with two gentlemen who have made a big difference in the sector and the organisation changed its name to Offshoreenergy.dk. The centre wishes to keep up with developments and be in the best possible position to support and develop the sector nationally and internationally. The major change made to the centre is that it has been divided into two divisions, one of which represents the interests of oil and gas companies and one of which has been named ‘Renewables’ and focuses on supporting companies involved in green energy at sea. Peter Blach, director of Offshoreenergy.dk’s oil and gas division, explains: “10 years ago, there was a strong focus on oil and gas, and only a tenth of our members were involved in the offshore wind sector. Today we have almost as many members from the field of wind as from the field of oil and gas, and most of them are involved in both sectors. And there weren’t that many companies that were involved in export either; currently, around 60% of our members are active in foreign markets.”

these two gentlemen are well known in the offshore sector. Peter Blach has been in the game from the beginning as the director of Offshore Center Danmark, and Morten Basse Jensen has for many years been one of Denmark’s driving forces in the supply chain to international wind energy; for instance, he was the initiator of Djurs Wind Power. Morten Basse Jensen observes: “We’ve divided the centre into two divisions because we want to target our efforts better and to be closer to our members so we can collaborate better with them. We’ve realised that the two effort areas are influenced by very different factors and conditions, but the two sectors complement each other as well, so there’s a range of opportunities for achieving synergies and a practical operational advantage to be gained from collaboration.” Morten Basse Jensen and Peter Blach enjoy support from the board, which has been expanded from five to 11 people and is headed by three visionary gentlemen. Anders Eldrup, former director of DONG Energy, is chairman of the board, and Maersk Oil’s director, Kurt Normann Nielsen and former prime minister Poul Nyrup are deputy chairmen.

“The vision in the field of renewables is to become represented in the UK and in Germany inside the next two to three years in order to help our Danish member companies form networks with local companies. An effort will be done as well into internationalisation of the value chain with a view to helping the companies establish themselves also in the other large markets.

The two directors of Offshoreenergy.dk, Morten Basse Jensen and Peter Blach, are making an effort to develop the centre as the national focal point for offshore companies in four focus areas: networks, innovation/projects, knowledge-sharing and internationalisation.

In the home market, our focus is on an effort into efficiencyimprovement and development of products and processes across the value chain. The aim here is to help reduce cost of energy.”

“We’re already involved in some of the large markets in that we have a staff of four at our office in Angola, two in Greenland and one in Brazil, and we’re also looking at Norway. The aim is to help our members enter into a dialogue with local oil companies and other companies so they can achieve increased turnover in these markets. A large number of companies have already established themselves in foreign markets as a result of this effort. In addition to the foreign markets, we’re focusing on research and efficiency-improvement in order to reduce oil production costs and increase the degree of extraction. We’ll also make an effort to develop the field of sustainable oil production.”

With a depth of 40-50 metres, the North Sea is in this sense not a big challenge. However, fields off Brazil and Angola with water depths of 1,500-2,000 metres are very challenging. Maersk Drilling is one of the companies that have in recent years focused on rigs for deep water drilling.

By the help of experiences from, for instance, the Hejre field, and because they have been assisted by researchers from the Technical University of Denmark, Danish operators have achieved knowledge of very deep oil and gas fields – the so-called High Pressure-High Temperature fields.

This area holds some of the world’s largest unexploited oil and gas reserves. Danish companies’ expertise in exploitation of hard-to-reach fields provides them with an advantage here compared to companies abroad. Norway’s offshore sector is extremely active, and Danish sub-suppliers collaborate closely with Norwegian operators. This collaboration is developed year on year. The Norwegian oil adventure is expected to go on for many years to come.

Angola decided a few years ago to expand significantly oil and gas production in the country – not least offshore. Concurrently, Denmark and Angola have been building a close dialogue with a view to collaborating about the expansion.

Brazil’s daily production of oil and natural gas is 10 times bigger than daily North Sea production. Brazil’s own offshore sector is finding it difficult to keep up with its fast-growing production and is pleased to collaborate with foreign suppliers.

New, foreign markets and development in the North Sea bode well for the future

W

hile the future seems bleak for other industries, it looks bright and promi­ sing for the Danish offshore sector. Many companies in the sector have seen growth in recent years, and the growth trend looks as if it will go on for many years.

The past few years have been good for the offshore sector, but it is the opportunity to do more than one thing at a time that makes the sector believe in continued growth. Thus there are assignments to be had both at home and abroad. Director Peter Blach, Offshoreenergy.dk Oil & Gas, says: “The important thing for the offshore sector is to spot opportunities. After more than 40 years of production in the North Sea, some fields are past the point where they can be exploited in an optimum way, but there’s still large potential in the Danish fields, although an extra effort must be done to gain the best possible outcome. Platforms and installations must be optimised, the degree of exploitation must be increased, and new ideas must be introduced all the time. Fortunately, the Danish suppliers to the sector are very creative when it comes to new ideas, which is why the sector has an optimistic view of the future.” “We’ve also succeeded in building a positive dialogue with a range of foreign markets where Danish expertise is sought after. This is evident in, for instance, Angola, Brazil and Norway, where the countries’ own offshore companies collaborate with Danish suppliers in a string of

fields; the offshore sector is doing well in many ways,” adds Peter Blach.

Oil companies will maintain production

11 oil companies currently have concessions to explore for and produce oil from Danish fields in the North Sea, and Maersk Oil, among others, announced some time ago that they intend to maintain production until their concessions expire in 2042. Also DONG Energy and their development company DONG E&P are involved in the North Sea. One of their activities revolves around developing an entirely new field, the Hejre field. The development of this field alone creates many jobs and clearly illustrates how an effort is still being made to maintain production in the North Sea.

Foreign markets

Danish oil and gas production makes up less than 1 % of worldwide production and, even though there is still great activity in the North Sea, many companies in the sector are making an effort to enter international markets. Peter Blach observes: “The Danish offshore sector is in a strong position internationally because we’ve been having to think in creative ways for 40 years in order to extract oil and gas from the relatively complex fields in the North Sea. Now that other countries have extracted all the oil from their easily accessible fields, they’re looking for the exact compe-

Together with its 270 members, Offshore­ energy.dk has selected some international markets with particularly large potential. Through delegation visits to the various countries and international business-to-business meetings, an effort has been made in recent years to focus especially on four markets:

– Angola – Brazil –Norway – Greenland/Arctic area As a national innovation network and knowledge centre, Offshoreenergy.dk is also engaged in a dialogue with other markets and organisations internationally with a view to developing collaboration. However, the effort has to do primarily with the four above-mentioned markets. “We’ve selected these four markets very carefully because their potentials are very large, and Danish companies are strong in these markets, either because they are part of the Danish Commonwealth, such as is the case with Greenland, or because Offshoreenergy.dk focuses purpose-

Keyword is professionalisation

The keyword for the international effort is professionalisation, and Offshoreenergy.dk and its members focus strongly on development of the companies’ competences in a range of fields. Peter Blach explains: ”One of the challenges for the sector has been for companies to look at themselves and ask: are we skilled enough? Many suppliers were originally small craftsman companies or industrial companies that have now grown big and, in recent years, we’ve done a lot to help them update their management strategies and market strategies. We also help them ensure that their managements have the right competences and that their organisations are geared to enter into partnerships with multinational companies. This is why we’re in a strong position internationally; on behalf of most offshore companies, I can answer: yes, we have the skills.”

Decommissioning Environmentally responsible methods for removing worn-out offshore installations constitute one of the promising markets of the future, and Danish suppliers have already come far in terms of developing the right methods at competitive prices.

he oil and gas deposits in the North Sea have for decades made up an indispensable part of Denmark’s energy resources, and the hunt for oil and natural goes on. The oil companies have allied themselves with, among others, researchers from the Technical University of Denmark, DTU, to develop methods for exploitation of entirely new fields and achieve better outcomes from existing fields. Apart from the existing facilities, a new research centre is expected to be established next year. Maersk Oil will thus, in collaboration with Shell, Chevron and the North Sea Fund, invest up to approximately € 140.000.000 over the coming 10 years in research that can lead to increased extraction of hydrocarbons from the North Sea. The research centre will gather researchers from the Technical University of Denmark, Copenhagen University, Aarhus University, Aalborg University, the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland (GEUS) plus a range of foreign experts. Across their professional fields of expertise, they are to focus on four effort areas that have critical significance if one is to increase extraction of oil and gas from the North Sea. Until the new centre opens, research is centralised at CERE-DTU, Center for Energy Resources Engineering at the Technical University of Denmark in Lyngby, north of Copenhagen. Here research is done into, among other things, exploitation of oil and gas fields that lie very deep in the sea – the so-called high pressure-high temperature fields that are also known as HPHT fields.

DONG Energy is currently preparing to drill wells in the company’s first HPHT field, Hejre, in the western part of the North Sea. With temperatures of up to 160°C, a pressure of more than 1,000 bar and a depth of more than five kilometres, the company is facing big challenges, which is why DONG Energy is taking advice from CERE-DTU. The collaboration on the extreme HPHT fields takes place as a part of a grand effort headed by DTU and supported by, for instance, The Danish National Advanced Technology Foundation.

Even deeper into the underground

Experiences from the Hejre field activities can be used to make things technically possible in oil and gas extraction in Denmark that have hitherto not been possible in that Denmark has actually obtained significant experience in the field of HPHT. Professor Erling Stenby, head of CERE-DTU, therefore believes the research team’s effort will help oil companies drill even deeper into the underground and so increase the chances of prolonging the Danish oil adventure. “We hope the results from the Hejre field can become part of the basis for strategic decisions about commencing extraction at even greater water depths,” says Erling Stenby.

Research into seismics

CERE-DTU and the planned research centre are not the only research institutions that are making an effort to exploit Danish energy resources. An new agreement between Aarhus University and Maersk Oil provides the university with the opportunity of expanding its research activities and training in advanced, sesimic surveys. The agreement involves Maersk Oil financing a five-year professorship in seismics and surveys of the underground. Advanced seismic surveys have helped localise significant oil deposits at north-eastern Greenland. It is known that the oil is there, but there is still a lack of knowledge when it comes to energy extraction under the extreme climate and weather conditions at sea north of the Arctic Circle. Obtaining knowledge of these matters might be a task for the Danish researchers.

East Metal wants to be heavyweight in the North Sea After setting up Danish production in the former shipbuilding yard in Nakskov earlier this year, the steel company East Metal is ready to take on heavy tasks for the oil and gas industry. Esbjerg-based East Metal is already a well-established supplier of high-quality steel constructions and components for the offshore wind industry. The combination of two high-tech factories in Latvia and high capacity in Nakskov makes the company a strong alternative for oil firms and service businesses in the North Sea area. - We established ourselves in Nakskov, primarily to address the oil and gas industry which we already work for, but continue to see great potential in. Ramboll Oil & Gas has used the technique for 14 years, but it has now become so sought after that Lau Jensen’s department has grown from a few staff to 43 staff since 2010, and some of Ramboll Oil & Gas’ Global Service Band staff are located in Doha and India.

Apart from the fact that time is obviously saved, there is also an advantage when it comes to safety, says Lau Jensen. He says: “By minimising the time spent working offshore, we also minimise the risk of something going wrong.”

As many as 98 per cent of the departures from Esbjerg Airport are directly linked to the offshore sector. This makes Denmark’s largest heliport a vital offshore link. Helicopters commuting between Esbjerg and the North Sea offshore installations take off and land many times per hour, but helicopter transports are not the only services the airport has to live from in the future. “We have special competencies with regard to loading and unloading large or difficult cargo. Our plan is to expand our cargo service and increasingly focus on being the heavy-duty airport that handles unwieldy equipment for the offshore industry,” says Deputy Airport Director Anette Bendixen. In recent years, the infrastructure around Esbjerg Airport has been developed to support the airport’s existing and future business strategy, including access from the motorway. “This has really enhanced the efficiency

of our customers’ logistics, and the fine infrastructure around the airport generally supports our chances of realizing the great potential we envisage for cargo,” Anette Bendixen says.

New destinations in sight Esbjerg Airport, however, does not only focus on something new to transport for existing customers. The airport is also looking towards new destinations for passenger and cargo transportation. There are already departures for the other main North Sea offshore cities, Aberdeen in Scotland and Stavanger in Norway, but Esbjerg Airport is also considering other destinations with offshore interests: “We clearly aim to use our offshore competencies to extend our business area to destinations with the same interests. In this way we can rightly claim that we are an offshore hub that you can’t miss.”

Norwegian oil investments are expected to break the record in 2013, and the Danes have good opportunities for having their share of the profits, says the director of Danish Semco Maritime, a company that has had success in establishing itself in the market

Norway is an attractive market for the Danes, who can benefit from several advantages, believes Steen Brødbæk, CEO of Semco Maritime.

nvestments are made in Norwegian oil extraction as never before, and, by the end of 2013, the figure is expected to reach 211.3 billion Danish kroner, which is ten times as much as in Denmark. Norway has attracted many players, including Danish Semco Maritime, which specialises in assignments about maintenance of products and services for permanent oil and gas installations plus maintenance of drillrigs. Steen Brødbæk, CEO of Semco Maritime explains: “The Norwegians were in the oil extraction game before the Danes, and their oil fields are very large. At the same time, they’ve pursued an expansive policy in terms of searching for new finds and also in terms of reconstruction and maintenance of existing fields. This means Norway will be able to maintain or increase production for many years ahead, so there’s a lot of activity and competition in this market.”

Companies waiting for oil adventure

However, it can be a challenge to secure a share of the Norwegian orders because the country has some very tough criteria and norms, which are different from usual standards. But Steen Brødbæk is in no doubt that Danish companies, with their great expertise, are capable of meeting these requirements. And the Danes also have other competitive advantages: “We talk a lot about outsourcing to Poland or Asia. But Norway can outsource things to Denmark because we’re cheaper than the Norwegian sector in that our costs aren’t as high. The Danes also offer more specialised know-how and solutions contrary to the Norwegian companies, which are generally many times bigger than the Danish companies and also have a wider platform on which to base their activities,” observes the CEO.

However, Steen Brødbæk stresses that, in order to have success in the Norwegian market, it is crucial to have a local presence in the country in the shape of a department with local staff. “Even though we’re Scandinavian brothers, the Norwegian culture is different from the Danish one. The Norwegians tend to act in a very correct way when it comes to processes and routines; on the other hand, Danes are probably more efficient, “ says Steen Brødbæk, who recently returned from a board meeting in Norway, where he noticed that even the language can be a challenge: “I used the Danish word for ‘nice’ to say that a good result had been achieved, and then I discovered that this word means ‘odd’ in Norwegian,” he adds with a smile.

or many years, there have been expectations about an oil and mineral adventure in Greenland. However, great costs relating to environmental challenges and test drillings mean there is still some way to go before they can be met. Meanwhile, Greenland’s new Government is involved in the current bidding rounds, explains Jørgen T. Hammeken-Holm from the Bureau of Minerals and Petroleum in Greenland: “The Government has no ambitions about introducing a preliminary stop for new licenses for oil exploration, and final negotiations on the granting of four licenses are still ongoing.”

However, Jørgen T. Hammeken-Holm acknowledges there is still some way to go: “We’ve always known that oil exploration would be time-consuming and costly; the exploration phase alone may run into several billion Danish kroner over 10 years, and development of fields for commercial production may amount to a sum that’s three or four times bigger. This means enormous finds must be made if oil extraction off Greenland’s coasts is to become a reality, but that’s not the same as saying it can’t be done.”

Cautious expectations

The fact that the oil adventure will not happen right away is something that the company Arctic Base Supply accepts. The company was founded in early 2010 as a joint venture between Danbor A/S and Arctic Line and is a service provider and a shorebase for the oil and gas companies.

Steen O. Hansen, director of Danbor A/S, says: “We’re cautious in our expectations because we’ve known all along it would be a long haul. In the meantime, we’re widening our field of business somewhat; for instance, it’ll now include the mining sector. We’re still in the market in Greenland, and we don’t intend to pull out.”

Danish companies should seize the opportunity to secure assignments in the fast-growing Brazilian offshore sector, according to a Danish-Norwegian consultant who gives advice to Danish companies in the country Every day around 2.4 million barrels (380,000 m3) of oil are recovered from the Brazilian seabed, and there is no doubt that this amount will increase. This makes Brazil one of the world’s most attractive oil markets, and this potential should be exploited by Danish companies, believes Arne Borg Pedersen, a consultant who specialises in providing advice for Danish companies about how they can establish themselves in the Brazilian offshore market. He advises the companies to offer solutions that do not require large investments, are relatively quick to implement and can be locally adapted. He also advises them to focus on their core business and not become involved in too many things, even though the market holds many interesting opportunities. And Anders Borg Pedersen stresses that it is important to get things right from the beginning, for instance when it comes

to tax and local legislation. He mentions a range of fields in which Danes have special expertise that Brazil needs. “Maintenance of installations by means of solutions in anti-corrosion, hydraulics, advanced welding, flushing, metal processing and handling of waste is one of the fields in which Danes have great experience and in which Brazil needs help,” observes the consultant, who is also the area manager for Offshoreenergy.dk in Brazil. T

he experience of Danish offshore companies with fields that are difficult to access, deep drilling and complicated floor bed conditions is now benefiting the industry in a faraway place – Angola. The West African country has significant onshore oil and gas production, and in recent years production has also moved offshore. The country therefore needs companies with experience in offshore oil and gas extraction. Angola has therefore looked to Denmark, with its considerable experience in the North Sea. The collaboration was launched when a delegation of Angolan ministers and representatives from the state-owned oil company Sonangol visited Denmark in autumn 2011. The delegation appealed to Danish companies to get involved in Angola – and so they did.

A shared foundation

Since then the two countries have been in close and frequent contact, and in November 2013 an OGIB AFRICA event will be held in the Angolan capital Luanda, where Danish suppliers will

meet their African colleagues with the aim of creating a shared foundation for developing Angola’s offshore industry. Suppliers from the whole of Scandinavia will attend, along with companies from other parts of Africa, and the event looks set to become the biggest ever for offshore oil and gas in Angola. “Over the years Angola has built a substantial oil and gas industry headed by Sonangol, and is now Africa’s largest producer of oil and gas. A collaboration with Danish and Scandinavian consultants and sub-suppliers can further develop this industry – especially in the offshore area where we can utilise the experience that Scandinavian companies have gained through 40 years of presence in the North Sea. Danish expertise can help optimise Angola’s energy resources”, says General Manager Paulo Veiga, Offshore Center Angola.

Maersk Oil leads the way

Maersk Oil is one of the most visible Danish offshore companies in Angola – and was the first to establish a business in the country. Maersk Oil

A delegation from Angola visited Denmark in 2011 and paved the way for collaboration on development of the Angolan offshore sector. acquired a share of a concession in 2005 and has since acquired other concessions, some of which were given up by other operators. In 2009, the company found the first oil, and has planned a number of test drillings in 2013. Several Danish sub-suppliers have followed in the wake of Maersk Oil, and with the joint Danish-Angolan OGIB AFRICA initiative, representatives from the two countries hope that the collaboration will be increased. OGIB is a concept developed by Offshore­ energy.dk. At brief, informal meetings the attendees can present themselves to each other and introduce an idea, a proposal for collaboration or a request for special competences. The meeting can lead to an agreement to hold further meetings. OGIB thus functions as a kind of ‘speed dating’ for the oil and gas industry.

Opportunities and challenges

But even though there is a need for expertise in the industry, there are, however, also some challenges that must be met if you are to sell your services in the world’s fifth-largest country. One of the greatest challenges is a requirement that, in relation to offshore projects, 65-80 % of the work must be performed by local companies.

“However, this requirement is something that Brazil itself finds it difficult to meet because of a lack of expertise, high wages and the generally high costs that inhibit competitiveness in the country. For this reason, this requirement is debated by the Brazilian Government all the time,” explains Arne Borg Pedersen, who has lived in Brazil for four years and has more than six years of experience of starting up businesses in the country. Another challenge that has to be overcome when you are attempting to enter the Brazilian market is obviously the barriers to do with language and

culture. This is why Arne Borg Pedersen advises Danes also to look through their international customer portfolio to find some customers that are already represented in Brazil. This can be a useful approach if you want to enter this market, where Danish competences are highly valued. “Danish competences are sought after, because Danes have a reputation for providing high quality work on schedule. And this is invaluable in an industry where any mistake or delay can result in enormous economical consequences and also huge consequences concerning safety,” says the consultant.

ood job and career opportunities in the offshore sector have in recent years created a hitherto unseen interest in being training through technical courses in Esbjerg and the rest of southern Jutland. The number of applications received by technical courses at Esbjerg’s two universities, Aalborg University Esbjerg and the University of Southern Denmark Esbjerg, has risen year on year, and also other educational establishments are reporting great interest from students. In Esbjerg alone, 1678 students embarked on further education courses in 2013, and Business Academy SouthWest calls this development historic. Part of the explanation for the great intake in recent years may be that more young people have had their eyes opened to the fact that training pays off. And then they apply for technical training in the field of offshore, believes Principal Henrik Larsen, Business Academy SouthWest.

In the past couple of years, heavy investments have been made in Esbjerg in, for instance, construction of halls of residence,” says Henrik Larsen. There is particularly one specific field in which Henrik Larsen is pleased with developments: “If you look at some specific areas, for instance the energy sector, then we’re very happy to see the increase in the number of young people who have been accepted on engineering courses and other courses that are relevant to the energy sector,” he says.

“The number of students on technical courses has trebled since 2011, and they come from all over the country. I’m certain that the many job opportunities in offshore in this region have attracted many talents from other regions. Hopefully, we can remedy the lack of trained labour that characterises the sector at the moment,” says Henrik Larsen. He adds: “We’ve started up many new courses in recent years, so we’re pleased that the number of students is keeping up. I’m proud that we’ve trebled our intake since 2008, and we’ve broken the record in the past two years in terms of the number of students.”

According to the sector’s own information, salaries in the various professions in the offshore sector are around 30 % higher than in other industries. The average wage for offshore staff around the world is around 500,000 Danish kroner a year.
