This year marks the 150th anniversary of the American Civil War’s Battle of Gettysburg and the dedication of the Soldiers’ National Cemetery where President Abraham Lincoln delivered the Gettysburg Address. Special commemorative events are planned for July and November, but anniversary activities will take place throughout the year. Guests will experience special battlefield and community tours, programs, living history events and a variety of Civil War museums and attractions. Beyond the Civil War, visitors will also discover the home of President Dwight D. Eisenhower and his wife Mamie at the Eisenhower National Historic Site. The destination also offers farm tours and markets, music and culinary events, antiquing and great art. Recreational opportunities exist year-round with skiing, snowboarding, golf, biking, hiking, and even kayaking. No matter the reason, we invite you to come, stay a few days and enjoy the area. Planning your next visit? Here are a few ideas to start your itinerary. History happens… Get oriented – take in a museum that gives the overview of the battle so you understand the battlefield when you are on it. Take a battlefield tour – bike, bus, car, carriage, horseback, Segway or scooter – each will give you the three day history. After you hear the story of the battle, understand the impact on the town with a guided tour. Be sure to mix in a few shops along the way to discover artifacts and mementos. Keep your history theme and enjoy a period tavern meal. You won’t want to leave before understanding the civilian story and taking time to follow in President Lincoln’s footsteps. You should plan at least two days to take this all in. Outdoor outings… are a great way to unwind. Find a cabin or set up your tent… then take a hike. Tour the orchards and take a kayak tour. Play a round of golf – or take your first lesson. Ride your bike through the battlefield. Relax and take a country drive and hit a few farm markets along the way. Top off the evening with music at a winery in the orchards. Full relaxation requires at least three days. Family photo album builder… bring the kids, or the grandkids, and the camera for a memorable trip. Walk through the history of the Civil War with ranger programs and living history. March across Pickett’s Charge. Visit the miniature horses and take a ghost tour. Help them become a Jr. Secret Service Agent at the Eisenhower National Historic Site while they learn why so many “liked Ike.” Don’t leave without a keepsake to remember your trip by – like a period family photo! Consider a long weekend. Every great getaway can mix in one of the hundreds of events and special activities that take place in and around Gettysburg throughout the year. Gettysburg 150th Anniversary

On

June 26, 1863, Confederate troops marched on Gettysburg only to continue on to York. But just a few days later, nearly 170,000 Union and Confederate troops would converge on the fields and in this small town. The war’s most famous battle would rage for three days, leaving 51,000 dead, wounded, captured or missing. Homes and farms destroyed, the town of 2,400 was left to care for those left behind, bury the dead and rebuild. 6

The commemoration, much like the battle, stretches beyond Gettysburg. In June, tours of Fairfield will describe battles and retreat that took place just 8 miles west of Gettysburg. Hunterstown and Cashtown will also host activities to note the engagements in their communities just a few short miles from Gettysburg. There will be living histories, special tours and events in and around the area.

On July 1, the Seminary Ridge Museum invites you to walk the halls and galleries where history happened. Hear the stories and understand the lives of the soldiers and civilians who faced this great battle. The four-floor museum will offer interpretation of the first day’s battle, the intermingling of national and religious conflict over slavery, the Underground Railroad in Adams County, the United States Colored Troops and Civil War medicine from a place that saw it all. Special tours of the cupola will be offered in addition to changing exhibits and docent guided tours. A special all-American concert will take place July 12 and 13 in honor of this special anniversary. In September, Gettysburg is honored to host the 2013 Congressional Medal of Honor Society Annual Convention. This special gathering of Medal of Honor recipients will gather to perpetuate the mission of the Society - to further the brotherhood amongst one another and honor and remember those who served. The convention will include both public and private events. These special events will honor the history of the Battle of Gettysburg. Hope and Healing On Nov. 18, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln arrived in Gettysburg, invited by local attorney David Wills to join keynote speaker Edward Everett to give “a few appropriate remarks” at the Nov. 19 dedication of the Soldiers’ National Cemetery. During that event, Lincoln would deliver his powerful Gettysburg Address which spoke of hope and healing in our nation. His short visit to Gettysburg left a tremendous footprint in history. In November, Gettysburg will host activities to share in Dedication and Remembrance – Reflections of History: Hope and Healing. Events will include:

It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced.

Now we are engaged in a great civil war. . .testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated. . . can long endure. We are met on a great battlefield of that war.

It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us. . .that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion. . . that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain. . . that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom. . . and that government of the people. . .by the people. . .for the people. . . shall not perish from the earth.

We have come to dedicate a portion of that field as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this. But, in a larger sense, we cannot dedicate. . .we cannot consecrate. . . we cannot hallow this ground. The

Learn how 40 years after Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton’s death, her home was used as the site of a Union encampment and was where a war council was held to prepare for the battle of Gettysburg. Hear real-life accounts of miracles on the battlefield as witnessed by Sisters and Daughters of Charity who nursed the soldiers during the Civil War. Witness to America’s History Gettysburg College (then Pennsylvania College) was founded in 1832. When the Civil War erupted, the College stood in its midst. Elements of two great armies swept through campus on July 1, 1863, the first day of the decisive Battle of Gettysburg. Pennsylvania Hall became a hospital for hundreds of soldiers.

On November 19, 1863, students, faculty and community members processed to Gettysburg National Cemetery to hear President Abraham Lincoln deliver the Gettysburg Address. It was David Wills, an 1851 graduate, who had invited Lincoln to Gettysburg.
