IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF ST. JAMES EL CAMINO DE SANTIAGO AUGUST 21 TO SEPTEMBER 2, 2015

Dear National Trust Travelers, For more than a millennium pilgrims have walked the Camino de Santiago, the “Way of Saint James,” to the shrine of the Apostle at Santiago de Compostela in northwestern Spain. To this day the pilgrims’ motives have been as varied as their personalities: religious devotion, wanderlust, flight from the law, the spirit of adventure, cultural tourism. Join us in August to walk the legendary Camino with C. Griffith Mann, curator in charge of the Department of Medieval Art and The Cloisters at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. En route to Santiago de Compostela, we will savor local cuisine, sample regional vintages, and stay in deluxe hotels and splendid paradores — and most days will offer the opportunity to walk a section of the legendary Camino. The gentle terrain and moderate distances make the itinerary accessible for nearly all hearty walkers, but vehicular support will also be available. Highlights on the journey include lunch at Bodegas Baigorri, where Rioja Alavesa is produced; a private after-hours visit to the Gothic abbey of La Cartuja de Miraflores; and Gregorian chant performed by the world-famous monks of Santo Domingo de Silos.

PLEASE NOTE: We do consider this program to be “Active,” as it requires engaged participants to stand and walk for long periods over rough terrain, such as dirt roads, inclines, gravel paths, or sand. Eight days of the program will include extended walking segments. The average distance covered is 3.5 miles per day, with one day’s mileage being just under 5.5 miles. The National Trust suggests that participants consult their physicians and undertake a pre-trip training regimen if they are not already accustomed to daily extended walking.
