OCTOBER 2011

Hello everyone, the 2011 WSAA Convention is fast approaching and I hope you all realize that we as a club are hosting this year. It has already been a tremendous amount of work for a few dedicated board members, but it is now crunch time and we need your help! We need folks to help with the auction and raffle items, setting up the convention room and helping with the Friday night activities. We are still looking for more auction and raffle items for donations and remember that the WSAA is NOW a 501c3 and your donation is now tax deductible! It would be considered charitable donations when you do your taxes, so why not give to the charity that promotes the sport we all love so much? I would also hope to see a lot of club members at the banquet since the convention is at the South Hill Best Western —because you can’t say it is too far away! If you are planning on attending either the banquet or the convention or both please fill out the registration form on the 2nd page of this newsletter and get to us ASAP. We need to know how much food to order and every early registration helps immensely! So I hope to see you all there and having a great time in our own backyard! Shoot Straight >>>————-> Andy

A friendly reminder to all members: Your Membership badge should be visible on your person while on the range. By having your badge visible, we might encourage non-members to join up and enjoy the benefits that active membership has to offer. We also need to show the shooting public that there are a lot of us members at this club! If you need a badge, please contact Vice-President Kelly Loney to get a replacement. Her information is on the inside of the back page of this newsletter.

Thank you for your involvement with the club :)

Thank You On Saturday, September 24-25th the club hosted a pasting party to address the need for field and hunter targets of all sizes. Thank you to the all of the folks who showed up---Oren King, Nancy Weller, Josh Raby, Will Zoeber, Rick Douville, and Deidre Fuchs. You were a huge help to myself and the club on such short notice and we've got all the targets pasted that we needed to get done for the next year! Thank you!! Now all we need is some folks to help clean out and organize the target shed. One side is done and perfect, but the workbench side needs a good amount of work. And if anyone needs to know who sang any song from 1965-1985 just ask Oren—he is a music encyclopedia!! J

We need some volunteers to help acquire raffle and auction items for the Washington State Archery Association Annual Banquet in October. The proceeds go towards funding archery education in the state, things like ASAP and NASP. If people are interested, please contact Kelly Loney. We really need assistance with this effort! The board will be busy planning the event, and if some members could acquire the donations it will really help out! WSAA is

now a 501c-3 non-profit, so donations are tax deductible! Page 3

Tips for the Newer Archer Welcome to fall – it sure fell fast! If you have been shooting at the range for a little while and want to move beyond shooting by yourself or on Thursday nights, you might be ready to try a little competition. December through March archers like to get together for some “indoor” shooting. The “indoor” is in quotes because some choose to do their shooting outside on the member range or the flat range, while others shoot indoors at Great NW Archery. WSAA (Washington State Archery Association) puts on the Multicolor mail-in tournament in December and January and then the Blueface mail- in tournament during February and March. There are also WSAA state championships for Blueface and Multicolor and National Championships for both as well. There is also a new multi-color State FITA indoor tournament in November that follows the World Archery Federation rules and equipment.

You have the choice to shoot a single spot or a multiple spot so you aren't banging arrows! They can get expensive!

For each mail-in tournament you have two months to shoot six times. The distance to the target is 18 meters (about 20 yards). For kids the distance will be 9 meters. You must be a WSAA member (see washingtonarchery.org) and pre-registered to shoot these tournaments. There will be groups forming as at least 3 people need to shoot together to validate the scores. Check the next Smoke Signal for registration form and further information including all the rules. Multicolor: Groups of 3 or more people gather, shooting 3 arrows ten times. The score is as follows – center gold is X = to 10 points, next gold circle is 10 points, outer gold circle 9 points, inner red 8 points, etc. Official score cards are used. A maximum score would be 300 points. We keep track of Xs in case there is a tie to be broken. Blueface: Groups of 3 or more people gather, shooting 5 arrows 12 times. The score is as follows – center white is X = to 5 points, next white circle is 5 points, inner blue circle 4 points, etc. Official score cards are used. A maximum score would be 300 points. We keep track of Xs in case there is a tie to be broken. After each shooting session, scorecards are tallied, signed and sent off to the state recorder. The state recorder tracks all shooters and sends out the final report at the end of the tournament. This is a great way to get to know other folks at Skookum as well as work on your skills. Another feature of this tournament is a weekend of shooting. Clubs around the state host a weekend when you can sign up to shoot two of your scores at pre-selected times. Just another way to enjoy even more archery socialization. Enjoy the days of fall. See you at the range! ~ Wendy Truitt

Target Assignments: Active Members are responsible for maintaining a target area. IF YOU DON’T KNOW YOUR TARGET ASSIGNMENT, THEY ARE POSTED ON THE BULLETIN BOARD IN THE CLUBHOUSE AND WILL BE ON THE WEBSITE SOON IF ALL ELSE FAILS, CONTACT THE CLUB VICE-PRESIDENT KELLY LONEY. We are responsible for replacing Target Faces when needed, picking-up trash in your shooting lane, and reporting maintenance that needs to be done to the Range or Grounds Chair, especially be aware of low hanging branches or any dangerous trees and reporting any range work (target shed, shooting bales or shooting stakes) that needs to be done to the Range Chair. Replacement target location will be disclosed during orientation. Please do not replace targets until they need it; typically this means that the center scoring area is shot out. Also, we can all pitch in on replacing the target faces on the flat range. Thanks for working together :)
