JANETTE OKE

If you’ve seen the “Love Comes Softly” or “When Calls the Heart” movie series on the Hallmark channel, you are already familiar with the inspirational writer Janette Oke. However, you may not realize the multitude of Christian novels she’s written. Our Liberty Library has 48 of her historical novels just waiting for you to enjoy! Janette writes about what she grew up with and what she knows best – “real life, honest love and lasting Christian values”. Most of her books are set in the pioneer-time period of the 1800’s. In addition, most of her novels center on a strong female character. As a child, Janette was shy and withdrawn. She was born sixth out of nine children in a little log cabin on the Canadian prairie in 1937. Her parents were struggling prairie farmers made up of stern, simple stock like many of her future characters. Growing up, her chores were pumping water to feed the chickens and carrying in the wood to replenish the wood box. She attended a one-room country school house and she loved going to school. She especially loved reading about pioneers and the Old West. She met her husband Edward in Bible College and they were married in 1957. He became a pastor and they raised four children together. Her one desire as they raised their family was to write fiction based upon her life and her faith. It wasn’t until the children were grown however, that Janette returned to her dream of writing historical, romance novels that were “clean” and based on her faith. Before Janette eventually retired from writing ten years ago, she had written over 85 novels and sold 22 million books. Her first novel “Love Comes Softly” was published in 1979 and, over the years, it was followed by many more novels and eventually movies based on her most popular series. In our library you’ll find 3 of her children’s books, 48 novels, 18 movies, and 8 Junior Books. Her favorite Bible verse is Proverbs 3:3-6, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.” With the holidays approaching, you’ll want to be sure to enjoy watching the DVD of Mrs. Oke’s story “Love’s Christmas Journey” – come in and check it out!

Did you know what reading can do for you? . . . It’s Never Too Early to Start with Books! Books are wonderful gifts for your “little ones” for Christmas. It is never too early to start them reading. Babies and toddlers need sturdy, “chunky” books that they can easily hold. These “board books” can be chewed on as well as held and read. Look for bold, colorful illustrations or photographs with simple or no text. Select books that contain familiar objects, animals or other babies. Also, look for books that repeat, rhyme or have rhythm. Preschoolers enjoy books with large colorful illustrations as well as others with small detailed drawings. Look for books with rich and vivid words. Books that invite interaction like I Spy, counting, ABC’s, or wordless books will encourage them to become an active reader.

Grades K to 2 also enjoy picture books. Make sure to include fantasy and fairytales. Animal stories and poetry which feature rhyme and repetition are fun. Don’t forget the “Easy Readers” and the beginning chapter books (like Magic Tree House) as their reading skills grow. Grades 3 to 5 -- Take cues from your child’s interests. Don’t forget about nonfiction. Guide them toward fiction books they can emotionally identify with or those with humorous or absurd pictures. Children this age often love “series” books from one author which focus on a special character. Come into your Liberty Library and let our librarians give you additional book ideas. And don’t forget book lights, bookmarks, etc… are wonderful gifts to encourage reading.
