"The US faces widespread hacking attacks that could result in a 'Cyber-Pearl Harbor,' Leon Panetta said. He invoked the greatest military disaster in US history to make the case for the CISPA bill, roundly criticized for violating privacy laws.

"In light of this 'pre-9/11 moment,' the US should act preemptively to protect 'national interests in cyberspace,' the US Secretary of Defense said.

"'[A] Cyber-Pearl Harbor that would cause physical destruction and the loss of life, an attack that would paralyze and shock the nation and create a profound new sense of vulnerability,' Panetta said during a speech at the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum in New York. He claimed that cyber-attackers had developed new technologies that could knock out entire city power grids, derail trains and contaminate water supplies.' Iran warns that it could stop exporting oil, driving global crude prices up, should the US and allied Europe tighten sanctions further. For such a case, Tehran says, it has a contingency strategy to carry on without oil revenues. “If you continue to add to the sanctions, we will stop our oil exports to the world,” Iranian Oil Minister Rostam Qasemi told reporters Tuesday. “The lack of Iranian oil in the market would drastically add to the price.” Iran is currently under pressure from international sanctions, mainly in oil exports, imposed by the UN Security Council, the US and the EU in order to curb the Islamic Republic’s controversial nuclear program. Washington and some if its allies believe the program is being used to develop a nuclear weapon. On October 15, the European Union foreign ministers approved a new package of sanctions targeting Iran’s financial, trade, energy, transportation and telecommunications sectors. Earlier in October, American lawmakers also extended the already tough sanctions against Iran. The measures have severely hurt the Islamic Republic’s economy. However, Qasemi said that Iran has a “Plan B” which will enable the country to make due without profits from oil sales. He did not mention how long the economy could function, though, without selling oil. Iran is still pumping oil at capacity and producing 4 million barrels per day (bpd), Qasemi said, denying OPEC’s report that the country's output has fallen to around 2.7 million bpd. He added that "Iran has been facing US sanctions for 30 years while successfully managing its oil sector."

Iranian Parliament considers sanctions on Europe Angered by a new round of sanctions, Iranian lawmakers are working on a “preemptive embargo package” which would hit European states, Press TV reported. Officials plan to impose sanctions in three phases. The first will deprive Iran’s enemies of its high-quality light and heavy crude oil. According to the report, 70 European oil-refining plants depend on Iranian oil. The second phase is a ban on goods transported from European states that participated in imposing the sanctions against Tehran. And the third would prohibit Iranian citizens from traveling to hostile countries.

Panetta branded China, Russia and Iran, along with extremist military groups, the greatest cyber-threats to the US. “An aggressor nation or extremist group could use these kinds of cyber tools to gain control of critical switches,” Panetta said. “They could derail passenger trains, or even more dangerous, derail passenger trains loaded with lethal chemicals.” He did not elaborate on details about where or how these cyber-strikes would occur. According to Panetta, the only way to effectively “protect the US democracy” is to pass a cybersecurity bill in Congress that enables the sharing of private information between companies and the government. The US Senate voted against the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection (CISPA) legislation amid complaints that it gravely violated personal freedoms and could be used to spy on citizens. Despite the widespread opposition, the Obama administration said it would sign an executive order effectively forcing companies to instate new cybersecurity standards.

Mr. Panetta claimed the laws would not violate people’s rights or liberties, “but if there is a code, if there’s a worm that’s being inserted, we need to know when that’s happening,” he told the New York Times prior to his speech.

‘Defense alone is not enough’ “If we detect an imminent threat of attack that will cause significant physical destruction in the United States or kill American citizens, we need to have the option to take action against those who would attack us, to defend this nation when directed by the president,” Panetta said during the speech. To this end, the US invested significant funds and research into developing techniques to pinpoint the origin of cyberattacks, with the aim of striking preemptively in the name of “national cyber-security,” he said. “There is no substitute for comprehensive legislation, [but] we need to move as far as we can in the meantime,” Panetta said. “We have no choice because the threat we face, as I’ve said, is already here.” According to media reports, the US played a major part in the development of the Stuxnet and Flame viruses that attacked Iran’s nuclear program and extracted classified information. The White House also confirmed that hackers linked to the Chinese government mounted a cyber-attack in October. The ‘spear-phishing’ attempt struck an unclassified network and failed to extract valuable data, although such attacks are “not infrequent,” officials said.

OST PEOPLE AT SOME POINT IN THEIR LIVES WILL run out of steam for a short period. This is perhaps not so critical as long as you know what to do when it happens. At the end of each day most of us feel the cobwebs thickening in our brains and just have to quit and go to bed. It will come as no surprise, but we aren’t all built the same, so the moment of shutdown arrives at different times. Sometimes a sickness will overcome us and we might

be out of commission for a week or more. In both these cases the cure is generally rest and good nutrition. What about when you run out of steam spiritually? What might be the cure for that? Well, I suppose if we look at the way our physical being works, we might get a good idea of how our spiritual being functions. We all know how it is: there are times when we are unstoppable in the Lord’s work. We’re out giving away literature, conducting Bible studies, leading a Sabbath School class. Then one day, for no obvious reason, our zeal flags and it gets harder to get motivated in “good works.” What we’ve done is spend more time feeding others than feeding ourselves. If a doctor were to apply

the same philosophy, he, too, would soon be sick in the bed, and then where would his patients be? A doctor and an evangelist must be careful that they don’t fall victim to, first, the sickness they are treating, and second, … Battle Fatigue. As a soldier in the Lord’s Army, it is necessary for you, from time to time, to come apart and rest. And during that rest it is especially important to feed yourself, not just with good food for the body, but also with good food for the mind and spirit. Perhaps one of the best forms of rest might be found in what Bible writers called the wilderness — the countryside. If you live in town, try to arrange with a friend who lives out of town to go and spend a few days where you can surround yourself with the

things that God has made: flowers, trees, bees, and yes, even the weeds. Of course, God can speak to you anywhere, but from time to time He won’t mind at all if you step into His “office.” As Chief Executive Officer, God has the right to make the rules and give advice as and where He sees fit, right? You will definitely want to take your Bible with you; perhaps even a couple of different translations that you like. You’ve given away lots of our books; now sit down and read from them again. You will be surprised at how fresh things look when you haven’t spent time with them for a while. if you have an Internet connection where you stay, go to our website and drive around a while; the address is at the top of this page. There are many, many free resources designed to feed your soul, and are great for sharing. Once you have taken the time to refresh your body and your mind, you will again be fitted to get back on the front line. And I dare say that your Heavenly Father will have been grateful for your visit; He likes to have you to Himself once in a while. As Owner of all that exists, God gives His human family an opportunity—and His permission— to step off the treadmill once a week and enjoy a Sabbath Day’s rest. Yes, Sabbath is a great day to be doing good works, but don’t get busy just because you haven’t had time during the week, and Sabbath morning you begin to feel guilty. You need rest, just like the doctor needs rest, and that is what Sabbath was originally made for. ssion World Family
