What is This 1,000 Books? ★Read at least 1,000 books to a child before s/he starts school ★Early literacy initiative ★Initiative to increase library usage (both in-person visits and circulation) ★DIY for families ★Open-ended so families can self-pace ★Passive (stealth) program

Stealth (passive) Programs ★After initial planning and set-up, administered easily with little on-going staff time ★Families provide the “power” and activity on their own time ★Encourages return visits to the library without an active program scheduled ★Encourages increased check-outs

What Bremen Did ★Families received a small size three-ring journal to hold half-page sheets ★Recording sheets for book titles returned after every 100 books read and recorded ★Created rewards after every 100 level – a sticker & a children’s music CD ★Gave out a book at the final level ★Included other small incentives ★Built in accountability
