A new piano repertoire list for lower division was unveiled at the OMTA State Conference in Newport, Oregon, and a new syllabus rule concerning repertoire was presented and discussed during a panel question/answer session. The new rule requires that contemporary pieces for full evaluations must come only from the works of composers listed in the newly released Syllabus Repertoire List (Lower Division). No other composers will be accepted for full evaluations. The newly revamped repertoire list provides a greatly expanded contemporary section and a level of choice in contemporary repertoire that exceeds the choice provided by many other educational programs. The 90+ composers in this new list represent the idioms of contemporary composition in their music and have been thoroughly researched and cross-referenced from 16 sources, all of which are listed on the final page of the contemporary master list. The new repertoire list is available from Diane Kadwell for a
cost of $10.00 (which will include postage). However, it will also be for sale at the upcoming Portland district meeting on September 25th for a district meeting/conference price of $5.00. Kudos to Carol Ratzlaf, NCTM, for her countless hours of work on researching and compiling the greatly expanded contemporary section. We also gratefully thank Jan Mittlestaedt, NCTM, for assisting Carol on this enormous task. Please read carefully the introductory letter on the repertoire list. The unacceptability of repertoire from method teaching books refers to the use of the short pieces from “corporate composers,” the contributors to the piano lesson method books. Also, serious piano repertoire as presented in method lesson books may be a simplified arrangement, which is not an original work. Original music is what is required for all levels of Piano Syllabus full evaluations. The OMTA repertoire list has always been a guide and is not the only repertoire that can be played by (Continued on page 2)
students for syllabus. It is permissible to use additional Baroque, Classic, and Romantic composers for the lower levels as long as their pieces are original piano compositions. If students cannot find a piece to prepare from the contemporary composers listed, then a demonstration or audition would be the logical choice for that student. Encourage your students to experience the excellent literature suggested and explore the many contemporary composers that are universally accepted as lasting com-
posers of the standard of music that our syllabus program is promoting. Why not have a few teachers in your district or focus group present a selection of these lower division pieces as a program? Portland Music in Beaverton has the new list and is stocking most of the selected composers. The music store in Corvallis also will have a list. In addition, most of the music is available on line, from Sheetmusicplus. com, Burtnco.com, and Pianovision.com. Take a look! Liz Willis, NCTM State Syllabus Chair

President’s Corner Dear Colleagues, It’s time for a new season for OMTA: A time for festivals, competitions, recitals, events and meetings; a time not only for our own private teaching, but for collaborating, learning and having good times with each other. That is exactly what over 100 of you did on the first weekend of August when we met in Newport Beach for the annual OMTA Conference. And, I want to recognize the many members who worked to make that conference a success: First and foremost, the Conference Chair, Susan Todd and her co-chair, Sarah Barker Ball. I can’t describe here the hours and effort they expended in planning and bringing to fruition the events involved. All of you who have worked on these conferences know what it takes. (Sarah was described as “a God-send as a co-chair.”) And, they had a lot of help from the members of the Lincoln County District. We couldn’t have had more gracious hostesses. (The omnipresent snack table was an ongoing feast of goodies—what more could we want?) They have been described as “what a fun bunch.” The Lincoln County members were helped with the food by Portland members Solveig Sorensen, Cherise DaCunha and Beth Crosby. Member Suzanne Brown’s husband, Al Brown, personally made all of the nametags and took the conference photos. Robyn Pfeiffer, MTNA Foundation Chair, amassed an amazing group of items for
the auction and the raffle. Her baby girl arrived just in time to keep Robyn in Portland so we thank Rebecca Jones-Schappert and Patti Duthie for filling in for Robyn to drum up the sales. This money will help offset expenses for the MTNA competitions at state level And, a special thank you to Joan Gathercoal who personally baked all of the cookies (hundreds!) for the reception after Yakov Kasman’s recital. Thank you all!! You are truly appreciated. Lincoln County, we had such a good time. Do ask us back soon. MTNA wants you to know about a new publication available. It is “Making the Connection: A Guide for Talking with Parents and Students.” This brief guide looks at the relationship between the child and music and addresses topics such as establishing studio policies/agreements, discipline, student accountability and addressing difficult statements. You may order this online at www.mtna.org/Marketplace/tabid/158/Default.aspx. The address for reaching MTNA by mail has changed. It is still 441 Vine St., Cincinnati, OH 45202, but the suite number is now Suite 3100. E-mail and phone are the same. Warm regards and best wishes for a terrific teaching year. Gloria Dakin, NCTM President, OMTA

Syllabus Our Fall ’06 and Spring ’07 Syllabus was again robust and successful. A total of 3,013 students participated, including students performing in strings, guitar, flute, and jazz piano. Jazz piano syllabus exams will be held during fall this year, as spring has proven to be a less desirable time for teachers and students. The annual retreat for OMTA Adjudicators will be October 20th in Portland. Ruth Sadilek is the new Portland District Chair for Portland String Syllabus exams. She is also chairing a committee to revise and update the actual syllabus
requirements for strings. Please contact her at 503-449-0010 to enter your students. An updated repertoire list for Lower Division piano has been completed and was for sale at the conference. It will continue to be available from Diane Kadwell, NCTM, for a cost of $10.00 (which will include postage). In addition, a new rule concerning acceptable contemporary repertoire has been instituted. Please see the article on page 1 for more details. Please remember to always use the most current forms on the Web site for syllabus entries. The forms, and fees, continue to be updated. Thank you.
OMTA Merit Certificates This year 33 teachers participated in the Merit Certificate Program and ordered 508 certificates. There have been many comments from teachers and students in appreciation. However, as much as I have enjoyed preparing these beautiful Merit Certificates, increasing work and family responsibilities have made it necessary for me
to resign this position. Gloria Dakin has selected Elizabeth Cooper of La Grande to take over. I would like to thank Gloria, Education Chairman Pamela Miller, Music News Editor Shelley Blumberg, and all of the appreciative teachers I have had the pleasure of serving.

Independent Music Teacher’s Forum Dear Independent Music Teachers: I hope you all had a wonderful summer with lots of musical activities. I just returned from a week at the Portland International Piano Festival, which is held every July, and I would highly recommend it to everyone. We had Paul Roberts from London, Scott McBride Smith (former President of MENC), Sara Davis Buechner from British Columbia, Alejandro Cremaschi from University of Colorado at Boulder, Jeremy Denk, Stuart Isacoff, Leon Fleisher and Katherine Jacobson Fleisher, Antonio Pompa-Baldi and a wealth of gifted students from the Portland area. The master classes, lectures and films were all superb under the direction of Harold Gray and Pat Zagelow. To have such a festival so accessible to OMTA members and at a discount through the Nellie Tholen foundation is really wonderful and should be taken advantage of by all members of OMTA. I am refreshed and looking forward to another year of teaching!

Greetings from the far east (in Oregon, that is). We ended last spring with our most successful festival all year—ensembles. We were excited for the 44 students and 6 teachers who participated, all in one grand recital! We are also excited for what’s ahead— our September kickoff meeting in Halfway (look that one up on the map!), where we’ll have conference reports from those who
were able to attend. October holds our visit from President Gloria Dakin, and our Fall Workshop. Thank you in advance to Pauline Eidemiller who is coming to share some renewed vision for syllabus. From there it’s full steam ahead with our Classic/ Romantic Festival in November. Thanks to you other Music News contributors who serve to keep us feeling connected.

The Roseburg District looks forward to a new year of recitals, workshops, and meetings. Many of our OMTA teachers are also members of the Umpqua Valley Federated Music Club and held a picnic on July 16 at Stewart Park in Roseburg. There will also be a salad/luncheon at one of our teachers homes on September 10 to increase interest and membership by giving information on how parents and interested parties can help support us in our endeavor to promote musical opportunities in our community. Auditions are being held for young pianists under the age of 12 on August 28 to play before the concert being given by concert pianist Angela Kim. This opportunity is being offered by Ms. Kim as when she was a child of this approximate same
O M TA M u s i c N e w s
age she was able to open the program for a concert pianist and still remembers the importance and thrill she received by this experience. Every year the El Dorado County Fair is held in August at the Fairgrounds. The Ricketts Review is a talent contest for young musicians and has had a history for the past 50 years of finding promising musical talent. Jaron Cannon, student of Virginia Young, won the contest two years ago by playing Bumble Boogie when 12 years old. We are hoping to have several of our piano students sharing their talents with the other contestants. Now that summer is about over, Roseburg District looks forward to a new year of recitals, workshops, and meetings.
District News Tualatin Valley Susan Marandas District Secretary
At our last meeting in July we reviewed the highlights of our past year. We reaffirmed our intentions to continue developing our teaching skills and knowledge within our supportive group. Spearheading our efforts will be our new officers: President, Bev McDaniel; President Elect, Tao-Heng Hsieh; Secretary, Susan Marandas; and Treasurer, Renee Masanque. We particularly would like to thank the OMTA Education Committee for presenting our district an award from the Nellie Tholen Endowment Fund. We applied for the grant to help us offer a work-
shop. Virginia Hawley Buhn, NCTM, will present the workshop entitled A Style and Interpretation for the Young Pianist. Virginia has been an inspiration to many teachers and syllabus adjudicators. We would like to invite teachers from the surrounding areas to attend our meeting and take advantage of this opportunity. The workshop will be held at the Tigard Christian Church on Friday, October 12, 9:00 a.m. to noon. We are looking forward to this workshop and many other enriching experiences during the year.

Outside Events Performance Opportunity Oregon Symphony 2007–2008 Season Prelude Series The Oregon Symphony Prelude Performance Series offers youth and community ensembles the opportunity to perform in the mezzanine lobby of the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall prior to Classical Series concerts. Last season, we had an amazing line up of 48 Prelude performances by 38 school and/or community ensembles. Many of our patrons look forward to these glimpses into what is being offered in our community of music education prior to the concerts. The benefits of this experience are many:
•
Oregon Symphony patrons are exposed to high quality, local music education programming.
•
The ensembles prepare for an audience receptive to a variety of musical offerings.
•
Families of students are treated to an opportunity to see their child “play the Schnitz.”
A special group discount is available to performers, and anyone accompanying the ensemble, is offered for the Symphony concert after their Prelude Performance. We can accommodate up to 15 instrumentalist performers and up to 25 vocal performers.
For more information about registration and a list of available dates and times for the Prelude Series this season, please contact: Monica Hayes Education & Community Engagement Coordinator 503.416.6312

Concert and date information can be viewed on our Web site at:

A Recital of Songs by Libby Larsen Sunday, September 9, 2007 7:00 p.m. Soprano Ann Tedards (University of Oregon) and pianist Marva Duerksen (Willamette University) present a recital of songs by American composer Libby Larsen. Willa Cather’s short story “Eric Hermannson’s Soul” supplies the central character for Larsen’s Margaret Songs, while the novel My Ántonia provides the basis for Larsen’s cycle of the same name. Letters and gallows speeches from the first five of Henry VIII’s wives dramatize the dying moments of these famous women in Larsen’s Try Me, Good King: Last Words of the Wives of Henry VIII. Finally, Larsen’s musical settings of selected Sonnets from the Portuguese by Elizabeth Barrett Browning chronicle the burgeoning romance between the poetess and Robert Browning.
Faculty Recital Sunday, October 7, 2007 3 p.m. Willamette University faculty members Allison Swensen-Mitchell, mezzo-soprano, and Anita King, NCTM, piano, will present this recital of Romantic music.
