She had lived in Garfield County and Walla Walla many years. Funeral services will be at Groseclose Mortuary Monday at 3 p.m., with burial in the Waitsburg City Cemetery. The Rev. Harry R. Baird of the Central Christian Church will officiate. She is survived by one son, Reese L. Sturgess, 81, 110 W. Twenty-seventh St., Vancouver, died here Friday. Worried friends found her body in her home after she failed to answer telephone calls, police said. She was born Sept. 20, 1882 in Missouri and lived the past 60 years in Vancouver. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Vancouver Funeral Chapel, with Rev. John Phipps officiating. Vault interment will follow at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland. Wife of the late Fred Sturgess, Mrs. Sturgess is survived by a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Howard Sturgess, Seattle; a granddaughter, Rosmary Sturgess, Seattle; a brother, Glen Blair, Gresham, Ore., and four sisters, Mrs. Ora Toby and Mrs. Pearl Stecher, both of Vancouver, Mrs. Ruby Ostenson, Portland, and Mrs Alberta Baker, Shell Beach, Calif.

THOMAS WILLIAM SODEN Funeral services for Thomas W. Soden, 91, former resident of Clark County who died at the Washington State Veterans' Home at Retsil, WA, on Monday, are scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday at Retsil. Soden, a former logger, was born Aug. 6, 1872, in the Midwest, and came to Clark County with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Soden, in 1888. Soden served in the Philippines during the Spanish-American War. He lived at Ridgefield, Pioneer and Vancouver, and at the time he moved to the Veterans' home about 10 years ago he resided in the Ridgefield area. Survivors include a son Paul, and a daughter, Mrs. Ruth Varney, both of Coquille, OR, and one grandchild.

KATE CARR A Clark County resident for most of her life, Kate Alcenia Thankful Edmonds Carr died Sunday (August 13, 1967) at the age of 76. She was a past Democratic committee woman for Clark county, and was a member of the League of Women Voters, Women's Auxiliary, and the Teamsters Union. Mrs. Carr had lived at 3615 W Street at the time of her death. She was born in Ridgefield on August 11, 1891. Survivors are a son, Donald Y., Vancouver; five daughters, Mrs. John Maska, Los Angeles, CA, Mrs. Gerald Marrs, Vancouver, Mrs. Norman Marrs and Mrs. Dale Mapes, both of Portland, and Mrs. Lloyd Frank, Shawnee, KS; a sister, Miss Alverda Edmonds, Vancouver; and 13 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the Vancouver Funeral Chapel. Interment will follow at the IOOF Cemetery in Kelso, WA.

Mrs. Hoxsie was born July 20, 1892, in Brooklyn, N.Y. She was a member of St. John's Presbyterian Church, Camas. She is survived by one son, C. Ward Hoxsie, Washougal; one daughter, Mrs. Frances L. Crowson, Washougal; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Stoller Memorial Chapel in Camas with the Rev. Francis Kirk officiating. Beck, 63, died in a Milwaukie, Ore., hospital on Sunday after a lengthy illness. He was born on April 12, 1907, in Tyrone, Okla., and for the past 10 years lived in Milwaukie. He was a member of the Concordia Lutheran Church in Milwaukie. Beck is survived by his widow, Ruth Beck, at home; two sons, Richard Beck of Milwaukie and Dennis Beck of Portland; five daughters, Mrs. Harold Steele of Vancouver, Mrs. Coran Bourdeau of Portland, Mrs. Raymond Menard of Hillsboro, Ore., and Mrs. Van Evers and Mrs. James Gibbons, both of Milwaukie; 25 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Harley Beck of Atlanta, Ill., and one sister, Marie Gaddis of Solon, Iowa. Services for H. Clifford Grendahl, 60, Vancouver, who died in an industrial accident Thursday afternoon, were held at 2 p.m. today at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Longview. The Rev. Grendahl lived at 2406 East 13th St. at the time of his death and was a former resident of Longview and Spokane. He was a general construction contractor and a member of the Association of General Contractors and Elks Lodge 228 of Spokane. He was born March 19, 1910, in Tekoa, Wash. He was born Feb. 18, 1902, in Grizzly Bluff, Calif., and moved to Skamokawa 11 years ago where he owned and operated a dairy farm. Survivors include his wife, Margaret at home; two sons, Lyle of Quincy, Wash., Mark of Skamokawa; two daughters, Nancy Suko of Gig Harbor, Marcia Cox of Coulee Dam; seven grandchildren; one brother, Clyde Goble of Fortuna, Calif.; one sister, Gertrude Wahl of Fortuna; numerous nieces and nephews. Wiley was former employee of the state Division of Weights and Measures. In addition, he was past editor of the newspaper in Brewster, Wash. Wiley was recipient of a gold medal in the bowling division of the Handicapped Olympics and he was active in work with handicapped children in the Yakima area. FRED ROSS Fred K. Ross, a former Vancouver resident who got his first newspaper experience as a reporter for The Columbian, died Sept. 6 in Edmonds at age 77. Mr. Ross was a 1923 graduate of Vancouver High School and attended business college here before entering journalism school at the University of Washington. One of his first jobs after graduation was at The Columbian where he worked as a reporter for the late Herbert Campbell, Columbian publisher. He also worked at The Seattle Times, Seattle Post-Intelligencer, the Portland Oregonian, Portland Evening Telegraph and the Lynnwood Enterprise. He was president of the Western Washington chapter of Sigma Delta Chi, the society for professional journalists. Mr. Ross was active on many governmental boards and commissions. He was

Born Oct. 12, 1927, in Klickitat, Wash., Mr. Smallwood had lived in Clark County since 1974. He served with the Merchant Marine during World War II and was last emplyed by Burgess Construction Company in Fairbanks, Alaska. He was one of the first truck drivers on the North Slope of the Alaska Pipeline. Mr. Smallwood enjoyed salmon fishing and was an accomplished handyman. He is survived by a daughter, Paulette Roberts of Anchorage, Alaska, three sons, David, William and Scott, all of Fairbanks, Alaska; a sister, Beverly Gish of Vancouver, a step-sister, Margaret Lawley of Lancaster, Calif.; and three grandchildren. Mr. Laddusaw was born June 21, 1931, and had lived in Vancouver his entire life. He retired as an operating engineer from Elf Atochem in Portland, and was working for Pinkerton Security and as a selfemployed tax preparer. He loved sports. DAPEL SENIOR Woodland Retired Assembly of God Minister Dapel Senior died in Woodland Saturday, January 10, 1998. She was 86. Mrs. Senior was born March 26, 1914, in Cordova, W.V. and moved to Mossy Rock, Wash., area in 1914, where she delivered mail over the mountain on horseback. As a minister she served the Woodland area. She enjoyed reading her Bible and working her flower garden. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Cecil Houghton, who died in 1968, and her second husband, William Senior, who died in 1997. Blair, 75, died in Vancouver on Thursday, Aug. 5, 1999. He worked for the district for 23 years. Mr. Blair is a lifelong Clark County resident. He was born Oct. 23, 1923, in Vancouver. Survivors include his wife, C. Arletta, at home; four sons, Dan of La Center, Gary of Vancouver, Willis G. of Portland and Michael D. of St. Helens, Ore.; one sister, Winne Scott of Vancouver; one brother, Leyland of Vancouver; and two grandchildren. Unknown Newspaper September 1999 JOHN LEE MILLER SR. A funeral was held Tuesday, Sept. 14, 1999, in Portland Memorial Funeral Home for John Lee Miller Sr., who died Sept. 9 at age 68. John was born May 7, 1931, in Marfa, Texas, and moved to the Vancouver, Wash., area as an infant. He graduated from Vancouver High School in 1949 and lived in Portland 41 years. He worked for Atlas Iron Works for 20 years and later worked for Wellons Inc. in Sherwood for about two years until retiring in 1996. He was a secretary for retirees of Iron Workers Local 516. He married Alice Haats in 1950. MILDRED O. SMITH Washougal A hotel manager for the Brass Lamp in Washougal, Mildred O. Smith, 78, died in Vancouver on Monday, Nov. 1, 1999. A 41-year resident of Washougal, Mrs. Smith was born July 1, 1921, in Raymond. Her maiden name was Axford. Her great-granddaughter, Kristina Johnson, died in November 1991. Survivors include her husband, Willis, at home; two daughters, Janice Hobson of Naches, Wash., and Sherrie Holdsworth of Camas; one son, Michael of Vancouver; one sister, Francis Reuther of Seattle; three brothers, Clinton Axford of Longview, Frank Axford of Livermore, Calif., and Ted Axford of Portland; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Mrs. Smith enjoyed square dancing, fishing, camping, and arts and crafts. She was a volunteer at the Washougal library. A memorial service will begin at 2 p.m. Thursday at Brown’s Funeral Home in Camas. Burial will be in Willamette National Cemetery in Portland.
