· · ·
Always‐available connection ‐ The connection is not dialled up but is always available except for session timeout after 24 hours. This was introduced to determine daily usage in order to measure and manage the volumes uploaded and downloaded. This session timeout also ensures that dynamic IP addresses are assigned. Session timeout will occur 24 hours after previous login. Customers can login immediately after being disconnected. In addition the ADSL session will also be disconnected after idling for sixty minutes. A right click on the mouse will re‐establish the connection. Flat rated ‐ No dial‐up (usage) costs will be charged for Internet access on ADSL. Phone line accessibility at all times ‐ Phone calls can be made and received and faxes sent at all times without having to suspend the Internet connection. Fast speed ‐ High access network transmission speed provides you with 512 kbps download and 256 kbps upload, eliminating waiting time and provides quick access. Please note that best effort applies once the Internet is reached since Telkom doesn't have control over where servers are hosted and the amount of individuals accessing the Internet at any time.
With oaks powered by ADSL you will have access to the following two services: Shaped To bring the difference between the two services in context, you can view this one as the entry level service of the two. It is shaped according to protocol and therefore provides the main priority to HTTP, which is the protocol assigned to most Internet websites. This service is therefore mainly designed for surfing the web and retrieving or sending email. At the moment all international HTTP traffic is transparently cached for uncapped ADSL users. With this service all international un‐cached data is shaped. The following un‐cached protocols are prioritised on the network: HTTP (in certain cases HTTP is not cached due to website incompatibilities), HTTPS, FTP. Mail (POP3 and IMAP), SSH and TELNET. This means that protocols not mentioned above will receive a lower priority on the network. Unshaped This service will offer you unshaped international bandwidth and a higher data transfer rate than the shaped service. The unshaped service will not shape the un‐cached protocols. All protocols will therefore share the available bandwidth equally. Similar to the current service local bandwidth will remain as is with no shaping implemented. Keeping this in mind this service was typically designed for a niche market including for example your typical Forex Trader, who uses unfamiliar protocols, which are not bandwidth exhaustive. Capping Rules oaks currently provides the following two options.
3
·
2GB Shaped With this option you will be allowed 2GB of shaped up‐ and downloads combined which will also include both local and international bandwidth. Similar to the option detailed above the allocated bandwidth will apply to a calendar month and will be reset on the first day of every month and expire on the last day of that month. Should you reach the allocated bandwidth, you will be disconnected from accessing the Internet or mail on the ADSL network. You will still be able to access the Internet over a dialup modem making use of your oaks powered by ADSL account. This option is only available with the Standard package.
·
3GB Shaped Should you reach your cap with this option the capping rules change slightly – you will be assigned a new IP range which will put you on a throttled international link. The international service could be non‐existent, since it depends on the amount of capped subscribers on this link and will therefore become increasingly slower as the month progress. Once capped your local bandwidth will remain as is and you will still have full access to any local sites and email hosted on local servers. Please note that this does not apply to sites with international links.
Other Requirements ·
Please note that oaks powered by ADSL is complimentary to the ADSL technology. Subscribers therefore need to either be an existing ADSL customer, or alternatively order an ADSL line at 0800 ADSL 00 (0800 2375 00).
·
You can check the availability of your exchange here.
·
ADSL is a best effort service and no guarantees are provided on throughput. ADSL is an access medium to the Internet or your preferred ISP and will not overcome any bandwidth related constraints within the World Wide Web.
For the oaks powered by ADSL service you will need the following: ·
You will need an existing ADSL line. If you do not have this line installed yet, you can apply for the service together with your oaks service or alternatively contact the call centre on 0800 237 500.
To receive the ADSL access service you will need the following: · ·
·
An ADSL upgraded exchange equipped to supply the ADSL service and you will have to be situated within a 3km to 5km radius from this exchange. An Analogue phone line. Please note that this only applies to individuals with no existing phone line. If you have an existing analogue line, you do not need a second line specifically for ADSL. ADSL will run over your current copper phone line, turning it into a multitasking tool. You will now be able to surf while your phone line remains open to receive or make calls and send faxes without terminating your Internet connection. A PC with the following minimum requirements: · ·
Pentium I, 166MHZ with 32 MB RAM, Windows 98,2000 or ME, 100 MB storage, Ethernet 802.3 (UTP) network adapter (if you wish to connect more than one PC) and a CD ROM Pentium II, 233MHZ with 32 MB RAM, Windows NT4,2000 or XP, 100 MB storage, Ethernet 802.3 (UTP) network adapter (if you wish to connect more than one PC) and a CD ROM
