Lisa Smittcamp – Fresno County District Attorney "COURAGEOUS CITIZENS"

Nov Back by popular demand! What does it mean to do one’s “Civic Responsibility?” Standing up in of the laws of our community is part of what it means to be a good citizen. The law 7 support works only when citizens are willing to come forward and speak up on behalf of the community

when they witness a crime. Come and meet several local individuals who were willing to step forward as witnesses to help law enforcement enforce the law. As well as a special recognition of the prosecutors who make this all happen. Bring guests to this community minded meeting!

The Rotary Club of Fresno

President’s Message In 1917 the Rotary International President Arch Klumph proposed establishing an endowment for the purpose of “doing good in the world”, at the Rotary International Convention in Atlanta, GA. Although it initially did not receive much support, a donation of $26.50 was received and the Foundation was begun. In 1957 the Paul Harris Fellowship was established in honor of Paul Harris to express appreciation for contributions to the humanitarian and educational programs of The Rotary Foundation. Those programs include an array of projects that save and invigorate the lives of people around the world and enhance international friendship and understanding. Foundation programs provide educational opportunities, food, potable water, health care, immunizations and shelter for millions of persons. These activities are funded, implemented and managed by Rotarians and Rotary clubs around the world. Let us not forget Polio Plus efforts to eradicate polio from the earth.

This year Rotary International will celebrate the 100-year anniversary of the Rotary Foundation in a variety of ways. In Fresno we will celebrate the Centennial with an END POLIO NOW Dinner on November 16, 2016 and on January 3, 2017. Rotary International President John Germ will be speaking at a Foundation Centennial Dinner Celebration at the Doubletree San Jose, in San Jose.CA and the celebrations will culminate at the Rotary International Convention in Atlanta GA in June 2017. I hope you will be able to participate in one of these celebration events. The Rotary Club of Fresno has long supported the Rotary Foundation and close to 1000 persons have been named Paul Harris Fellows, “in appreciation of tangible and significant assistance given to further better understanding and friendly relations between peoples of the world.” One of our goals for this year is to actually achieve and name our 1000th Paul Harris Fellow. We have created an incentive program to encourage persons to support the Rotary Foundation. We are reminded that gifts to the Foundation supports projects not only around the world but also come back to us in the form of grants for some of our projects. What better way, as a Rotarian Serving Humanity, but to support the Rotary Foundation in our worldwide efforts to eradicate polio, provide health care, provide education opportunities, and shelter and promote peace and understanding among all people.

D. Duane Oswald President 2016-17

The of Fresno Last Rotary Month’sClub Meeting Recap

October 3 Susan Anderson played the part of moderator as the top two vote-getting mayoral candidates (Henry R. Perea and Lee Brand) squared off in a spirited debate. Each candidate was firm on their positions and expressed a genuine desire to begin a new chapter for the City of Fresno. This casual round of questioning gave the candidates an opportunity to detail why they believe they are the best choice for mayor. Bell Ringers: Nicole Linder (2) has a new position as Executive Director for the Marjaree Mason Center; Derrell Biddy (2) was recognized with the Distinguished Service Award at the Northern California Golf Association’s Hall of Fame; Brandi Orth (2) was honored at the National Women’s Political Luncheon. October 17 Detective Brad Stevens, Fresno Police Department and Program Coordinator for Valley Crimestoppers, was happy to sing the praises of Crimestoppers. His presentation centered on profiling a few of the people who have been incarcerated by anonymous tips made by Valley residents. He thanked Rotary for their continued support of this great organization. Bell Ringers: John Richers (2) reminded all that the blood drive & Boy Scouts’ popcorn sales; Patty Craven (2) was back from a trip to Europe where she chaperoned 23 amazing Girl Scouts; Greg Hund (2) completed his 100-mile bicycle ride and raised $3200 for Best Buddies; Mike Falge (2) won a golf tournament and announced that Murphy Bank received another 5Star Rating; Jim Ford (3) rang for Central Valley Bank when they received a 5-Star Rating from Bauer Financial, too; Bill Lucido (2) was able to participate with a recent Honor Flight and shared his family’s story at the Hinds Hospice Gala. October 24 Rodney Terry, Head Coach of the Fresno State Men’s Basketball Team, gave a spirited discussion on the recent successes of his team along with his expectations for the upcoming season. His goal is to build up successful young men and not just a winning basketball program. With only one percent of student athletes moving on to the NBA, Terry wants to help each of his players grow to be successful in business, be good husbands and fathers and contribute to their community. Bell Ringers: Lisa Smittcamp (1) rang the bell in honor of Coach Terry and his team’s success; Blair Looney (2) was inducted into the Fresno High School’s Athletic Wall of Champions for swimming; Jeanette Ishii (2) was humbled to be a Marjaree Mason honoree this year. October 31Brandi Orth, Fresno County Clerk, gave an inside look at what it really takes to complete this year’s election on November 8th and the process of protecting the integrity of the election. Overseeing 24 permanent staff and 120 part-time staff is a small part of the puzzle compared to the 1,700 who will be hired to play support roles on election day. Brandi and her team deal with 1,900 base precincts in Fresno County, 592 voting precincts, 280 polling places and create 230 unique versions of the ballot that has to be secured and shipped to more than 437,000 registered voters. Wow! Bell Ringers: Doug Armey (2) returned from a sailing adventure with his wife in Croatia; Lynne Pietz (3) bicycled through the mountains of Italy and had the best Hinds Hospice Gala in their history; Anthony Andrade (2) welcomed another grandson and was proud of his own son for becoming ordained to the Catholic priesthood; Gil Nye & John Baerg (2 each) enjoyed a 2,600 mile round-trip motorcycle ride together that took them through four National Parks; Kelly Lilles (1) is looking for some help to feed 1,000 families at her Catholic Charities Turkey Drive on November 22.
