INTRODUCTION The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) was established in 1947 to promote economic integration across a broad region of 56 countries in Europe, North America and Central Asia. UNECE Countries in Figures gives a snapshot of the social and economic conditions in each of these member States, using statistical indicators from a wide variety of different domains, ranging from GDP per capita to rates of computer use by age and sex, and from gender differences in wage rates to the proportion of land area covered by forest. This publication was prepared by the UNECE Statistical Division and includes data FROOHFWHG IURP QDWLRQDO DQG LQWHUQDWLRQDO VRXUFHV RI RI¿FLDO VWDWLVWLFV $OO ¿JXUHV UHIHU WR the most recent year for which information is available, usually 2011. Most of the data can also be found online through the UNECE Statistical Database (unece.org/statistics/data), which is updated regularly to include the latest available data. ABOUT THE UNECE STATISTICAL DIVISION The Statistical Division of UNECE works with member countries to strengthen the systems of statistical information needed for effective economic, social and environmental policymaking. It services the Conference of European Statisticians (CES), composed of the Heads of the national statistical organizations of the UNECE region, working in close cooperation with other international organizations active in statistics, as well as with countries from other regions of the world. The Statistical Division implements the goals of the CES through technical assistance programmes, activities such as intergovernmental meetings and workshops, maintenance of databases, and through the development of standards and guidelines. 7KLV ZRUN DLPV WR DFKLHYH PRUH HI¿FLHQW SURGXFWLRQ RI RI¿FLDO VWDWLVWLFV DQG EHWWHU international comparability of statistical data within and between regions.
