director’s letter Since its inception 60 years ago, Northwestern University Transportation Center (NUTC) has relied on the advice, wisdom and support of leaders from the transportation and logistics industries who make up the Business Advisory Council (BAC). The partnership between the BAC and NUTC’s greater community of faculty, students and researchers defines a unique platform upon which new ideas evolve, education programs expand and professional practices advance. Our BAC Members are leaders across the spectrum of companies engaged in the delivery of transportation and logistics services, including major carriers in all modes of transportation, equipment manufacturers, major shippers, third party logistics providers and brokers, technology innovators and suppliers, as well as financial and legal services providers to the transportation industry. Individually and collectively, they represent the most significant circle of players contributing toward advancement of the transportation and logistics sectors. The BAC is an essential partner and invaluable source of support for NUTC’s research, education and outreach programs. American Airlines Group (AAG) was formed in 2013 after the merger between American Airlines and US Airways. With more than 120,000 employees and 1,500 aircraft, the company is now the largest airline in the world. AAG operates more than 6,700 flights per day to 338 destinations in 54 countries. JIM W. BUTLER President, American Airlines Cargo Butler, president of American Airlines Cargo, leads global cargo business for one of the largest airline networks in the world. Butler joined American in 1996 and has held a variety of leadership roles including management of the airline’s commercial restructuring effort, ownership of American’s fleet strategy and launch of the airline’s small and medium enterprise strategy. He was also one of six named to the core leadership team responsible for the American Airlines and US Airways integration. He earned his MBA from Northwestern’s Kellogg School of Management and bachelor’s in hotel management from Cornell University. He served on the UK Board of Airline Representatives, the Joint Steering team at London Heathrow and currently serves as a member of the IATA Cargo Committee. KENJI C. HASHIMOTO Senior Vice President, American Eagle As Senior VP, Regional Carriers, Hashimoto oversees all regional flight service operating under the American Eagle brand. This oversight includes ensuring the 10 regional carriers flying nearly 590 aircraft that operate more than 3,500 daily flights provide safe, quality and cost-effective service for the company and its customers. Hashimoto has more than 15 years of experience at American having previously served in various leadership roles including vice president of American’s worldwide cargo business and vice president of strategic alliances, leading efforts to grow oneworld® and bilateral airline relationships such as joint business agreements and codeshares. Hashimoto earned a MBA from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University and a BS in physics from Harvey Mudd College. DAVID SEYMOUR Senior Vice President, Integrated Operations As Senior VP, Integrated Operations, Seymour is responsible for American’s Flight Operations, its Safety group, the Integrated Operations Control Center, and its Technical Operations. David brings more than three decades of logistics and operational experience to American Airlines. His career began in the US Army. David’s aviation career began with America West Airlines in 1999. He moved into his current capacity in April 2016. David holds an MBA from Northwestern’s Kellogg School and a BS in mathematical science of operations research from the US Military Academy.

BNSF Railway operates one of the largest rail systems in North America, with 32,500 route miles covering 28 states and two Canadian provinces. ROGER NOBER Executive Vice President, Law & Corporate Affairs & CLO Nober joined BNSF Railway Co. in January 2007 and oversees legal and regulatory matters, environmental, claims, compliance, communications as well as state government and community affairs. Prior to that, Nober was a partner in the Washington office of Steptoe & Johnson LLP. From 2002 to 2006, Nober chaired the US Surface Transportation Board. From 1993 to 2002, he served in various roles at the Department of Transportation and in the US House of Representatives, including serving as chief counsel for the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure. He has a bachelor’s degree from Haverford College and a Juris Doctor from Harvard University School of Law. MATTHEW K. ROSE Executive Chairman Before being named executive chairman, Rose served 13 years as BNSF’s chief executive officer and eleven years as its chairman, during which time BNSF became a Berkshire Hathaway-owned company. In 1999, Rose was made president and chief operating officer. For almost two years prior to that, he served as senior vice president and chief operating officer. Rose has previously held several positions at Burlington Northern Railroad and in the trucking industry. Rose holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Missouri.

JEFF SILVER Co-Founder & CEO Silver is co-founder and CEO of Chicago-based Coyote Logistics, one of the most innovative, fast-growing third-party logistics (3PL) service providers in North America. Under Silver’s leadership, Coyote became a UPS subsidiary in 2015. Prior to founding Coyote in 2006, he transformed the 3PL industry in the 1980s and 1990s with American Backhaulers, the secondlargest North American freight brokerage at the time. Crain’s Chicago Business named Silver to its 2015 Who’s Who in Chicago Business for the fourth consecutive year and Supply & Demand Chain Executive gave him the 2015 Pros to Know Award for the third consecutive year. In addition to the NUTC’s BAC, Silver serves on the MIT School of Engineering Dean’s Advisory Council and is a member of the Economic Club of Chicago.

CSX Transportation provides rail, intermodal, and rail-to-truck transload services. Its 21,000mile eastern network connects customers to ports, production and distribution centers, and markets across the United States. EDWARD D. JENKINS Vice President, Market Strategy E-Business Jenkins is responsible for translating customer needs and growth opportunities into service innovations that support each of the railroad’s key markets. During his nearly 30-year career with CSX, he has held positions in operations, sales and marketing and strategy. Jenkins spent several years in management consulting and holds a bachelor’s degree in marketing management from Virginia Tech and a master of management in transportation from Northwestern’s Kellogg School of Management.

Echo Global Logistics is a leading provider of technology-enabled transportation management. Proprietary technology, dedicated service teams and robust procurement power enable clients to achieve significant transportation efficiencies and best-in-class service. DOUGLAS R. WAGGONER Chairman & CEO Waggoner has served as Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Echo Global Logistics since 2006 and has contributed to making Echo a leading provider of technologyenabled transportation management. Prior to Echo, he founded SelecTrans, LLC, a freight management software provider. From 2004 to 2005, he served as the CEO of USF Bestway. Prior to this, he was the senior vice president of strategic marketing for USF Corporation. He also serves on the Board of Directors for the Supply-Chain Innovation Network of Chicago, a new organization emerging out of World Business Chicago’s Plan for Economic Growth and Jobs. Waggoner holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from San Diego State University.

MIKE MACYAUSKI Vice President, Operations Planning & Engineering As FedEx Express VP of Operations Planning and Engineering, Macyauski is currently responsible for planning, engineering, and consulting services to FedEx Express station, ramp, and hub operations. In that role he leads development of service and productivity improvement across the organization. Since joining the company in 1985 in Operations Management, he has lead organizations to include Operations, Engineering, Business Planning, and Quality and Service Assurance. He is a graduate of the US Military Academy at West Point, and earned an MBA from the University of Tennessee.

Hub Group is a transportation management company that provides intermodal, truck brokerage and logistics services throughout North America and a top 50 publicly-traded company in the Chicago area with over 2,500 employees and $3.6 billion in revenue, focused on solutions that offer customers better supply chain and cost control. PHILLIP D. YEAGER Executive VP, Account Management & Intermodal Operations Yeager was named Executive VP, Account Management and Intermodal Operations in January 2016. He is responsible for managing Hub Group’s overall customer experience, including customer service, intermodal operations and rail relationships. Yeager joined Hub Group in 2011 as the Director of Strategy and Acquisitions to focus on strategic initiatives and acquisitions throughout the company and lead the integration of Mode Transportation. Prior to joining Hub Group, he served as Assistant VP of Commercial Banking at BMO Harris Bank, and as an investment-banking analyst for Lazard Freres & Co. Yeager earned his BA from Trinity College and an MBA from University of Chicago Booth School.

Norfolk Southern is a leading North American transportation provider. Its Norfolk Southern Railway subsidiary operates approximately 21,000 route miles in 22 states and the District of Columbia, serves every major container port in the eastern United States, and provides efficient connections to other rail carriers. ROBERT E. MARTÍNEZ Vice President, Business Development & Real Estate Martínez focuses on Norfolk Southern’s industrial development, international business development, including port-related issues, and oversight of the company’s forecasting and market research activities. Prior to joining NS, Martínez served at the US Department of Transportation under the first Bush administration as deputy maritime administrator and was promoted to associate deputy secretary of transportation and director of the office of intermodalism by President George H. W. Bush. He began his career at NS in 1993 but left in 1994 to serve as Virginia secretary of transportation under Governor George Allen. He rejoined NS in 1998. Martínez holds a BA from Columbia University and a PhD from Yale.

GENE SEROKA Executive Director LA City Council confirmed Seroka as Executive Director for the Port of LA in June 2014. An industry-know leader, he brings more than 28 years of experience in shipping, global logistics and executive management to the Port. As Executive Director of the busiest container port in North America, Seroka is responsible for managing a $1 billion budget, leading 900+ employees, advancing major capital projects, growing cargo volumes, and promoting innovative, sustainable practices to improve Southern California’s economy and quality of life.

Stifel is a full-service wealth management and investment banking firm, established in 1890 and based in St. Louis, MO, providing securities brokerage, investment banking, trading, investment advisory, and related financial services through its wholly owned subsidiaries to individual investors, professional money managers, businesses and municipalities. JOHN G. LARKIN Managing Director & Head, Transportation Capital Markets Research Larkin joined Legg Mason (later sold to Stifel, Nicolaus & Company, Inc.) in October 2001 to form and lead the firm’s entry into the transportation markets. He has been recognized as an all-star analyst by Institutional Investor magazine, a Wall Street Journal all-star analyst, and awarded numerous Starmine stock picking awards. He’s served as: Chairman & CEO of RailWorks Corporation, a member of Alex. Brown & Sons’ transportation team, and various roles in planning/economic analysis at CSX Transportation, Inc. He earned his MBA from Harvard, BA and MS in Civil Engineering from University of Vermont and University of Texas, respectively. He frequently speaks at transportation industry events and is a strategic advisor to transportation leaders on airline PNR Warehouse, Airline Merchandising, the Customer Journey, and linking corporate level strategy to analytics and the data environment. Bush earned his MBA in Finance & Statistics from University of Chicago, Booth School of Business and BA in Economics/Econometrics from University of California, San Diego. PEETER KIVESTU Transportation & Logistics Industry Consultant Kivestu is Transportation & Logistics Industry Consultant, responsible for Teradata’s solution strategy in public sector transportation. Previously in air transportation, he held positions across finance, marketing, operations and information technology at American, Canadian Airlines International, and Northwest, including roles of VP Advanced Productivity Programs, VP Technical Operations and VP B2B Sales. For many years he directed Teradata’s global travel industry marketing. Peeter has an Engineering degree from Brown University and a master’s degree in Aeronautics from MIT.

Union Pacific owns one of America’s leading transportation companies—Union Pacific Railroad, links 23 states and serves the fastest-growing population centers, providing fuelefficient, environmentally-responsible, safe modes of freight transportation. ROBERT M. KNIGHT JR. Executive Vice President & CFO Knight has been the CFO of Union Pacific Corporation since 2004. He is responsible for financial activities of the corporation and Union Pacific Railroad. Knight began his UP career in 1980 and held a variety of roles and responsibilities including leading the railroad’s Energy and Automotive business units. He served as SVP of Finance prior to being named CFO. In 2014, Knight ranked No. 2 on the Wall Street Journal’s list of the Top Performing CFOs in the S&P 500. Knight holds a BA in business administration from Kansas State University and MBA from Southern Illinois University.

JASON BIRNBAUM Vice President, Operations Technology Birnbaum is responsible for the effective implementation and management of technology strategy and solutions to support United’s global operations. Previously, Jason served as executive vice president and CIO for SIRVA, Inc., where he had full responsibility for all IT systems for both customer facing and business support systems. Previously, he served as chief information officer for GE Health Care Global Supply Chain and GE Industrial Europe. Jason has a BA in finance from University of Missouri and an MBA from University of Illinois. KATE GEBO Senior Vice President, Network Operations Gebo is responsible for delivering an integrated and industry-leading travel experience for customers from booking to landing. Gebo oversees contact centers, customer experience, food services, inflight services and airport operations with a focus on creating a consistent, positive experience for customers every day, as well as building strong and effective teams. Previously, she served as United’s VP for the CEO’s office and VP of corporate real estate. Gebo has a BA in finance from DePaul University and an MBA from Loyola University, Chicago.

TRACY LEE Vice President, Network Operations Lee oversees the day-to-day operations of the airline in the areas of operations control, flight crew resources, air traffic coordination, and operations planning and analysis. Prior to assuming this role, Lee was vice president of operations planning where he was responsible for setting the reliability goals for the company as well as internal and external operational reporting. Previously, Lee spent more than 20 years at Continental Airlines working in several areas throughout the company including finance, human resources and operations. He joined Continental in 1987 as a crew scheduler. Lee received his bachelor’s degree in finance from Texas Tech University and an MBA from the University of Texas at Austin.

UPS is a global leader in logistics, offering a broad range of solutions including transporting packages and freight; facilitating international trade, and deploying advanced technology to more efficiently manage the world of business. JOSEPH PICONE President, UPS Corporate Transportation Picone, who began his career at UPS in 1981 as a part-time package handler, serves as president of corporate transportation at UPS. In this role, he leads high-level integrated transportation network planning and execution. Previously, Joe served as president of the Illinois district where he provided the strategic path for roughly 11,000 employees. Joe also held positions as operations manager for the Chicago Area Consolidation Hub (CACH), the largest ground package consolidation, sorting, and distribution facility at UPS, East District President of UPS Freight, previously Overnite, where he led a team to advance customer service levels of less-than-truckload (LTL) operations and was responsible for blending the UPS culture into the new freight business. He holds a degree in business management from the University of Phoenix.

Walgreens is the largest drugstore chain in the U.S., with more than 8,200 stores in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The company had fiscal 2014 sales of more than $76 billion. DOV SHENKMAN Group VP, Supply Chain Strategy, Inventory & Transportation Shenkman is responsible for Walgreens’ supply chain strategy, inventory and replenishment management, transportation and import management, supplier development, as well as private brand and DSD supply chain. Prior to joining Walgreens, he was a Senior VP of Inventory Management and Replenishment at OfficeMax. He has over 25 years of industry and management consulting experience, including executive positions at General Motors, i2 and EDS-A.T. Kearney. Shenkman worked and provided consulting services to many of the Global Fortune 500 companies. His expertise includes strategic planning, business transformation, supply chain management and general management. Shenkman holds a Bachelor of Industrial and Management Engineering, as well as an MBA.

SCHMIDT Senior Vice President, Intelligent Solutions Group Schmidt is responsible for its Airinmar subsidiary and AAR Digital Services. Prior to joining AAR in 2011, Schmidt served aa Senior Vice President at Macquarie Capital and served as a Partner at Oliver Wyman and A.T. Kearney. Schmidt has spent his entire career in the aviation industry with a focus on restructuring, transformation and innovation. He earned his MBA from Northwestern’s Kellogg School of Management and his Bachelor of Science from Embry Riddle.

AccuFleet International provides high-quality, innovative solutions to its partners in the aviation industry, providing crashworthiness safety testing and engineering, interior and exterior aircraft cleaning, appearance management, and lavatory services. JIM A. DAVIS Chief Executive Officer A Federal Aviation Administration Designated Engineering Representative for more than 20 years, Davis has developed and operates the premier independent aircraft fire safety testing facility in the U.S. Prior to joining AccuFleet, Davis was a consultant with Price Waterhouse and an engineer at Texas Instruments. He is on the Board of Airline Fabricare Systems and is Co-Chair of the Materials Flammability Working Group formed by the Aviation Rulemaking Advisory Committee. Davis earned a Master of Science in Operation Research and an MBA, both from Southern Methodist University. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Rice University.

Air Canada is Canada’s largest airline and the largest provider of scheduled passenger services in the Canadian market, the Canada-U.S. transborder market and in the international market to and from Canada. AMOS KAZZAZ Senior Vice President, Financial Planning & Analysis Kazzaz is responsible for strategic procurement, corporate real estate, planning, cost reduction initiatives and financial support for all Air Canada branches. He was previously Vice President, Financial Planning and Analysis. Prior to joining Air Canada, Kazzaz had a 24-year career at United Airlines, where he held executive positions such as Vice President, Cost Management and Vice President, and Financial Planning and Analysis. He was also Chief Operating Officer at ZAP, a transportation company focused on the development and distribution of electric cars. Kazzaz holds an MBA in Finance from the University of Denver and a BA in International Affairs from the University of Colorado at Boulder.

Anacostia Rail Holdings Company is the owner and manager of six U.S. railroads operating in seven states. These companies have provided excellent financial returns and have established strong business relationships with their customers, employees, and communities. ANDREW FOX Managing Director Fox joined Anacostia Rail Holdings Company in 1997 as the president of Pacific Harbor Line, Inc. In August 2010, Mr. Fox moved to the Chicago South Shore & South Bend Railroad where he served as President until March 2016, and then CEO until July 2016. Fox has also held a variety of posts at the Southern Pacific Transportation Company, including assistant to the vice president of operations. Fox is a past president of the California Railroad Association and past director of the ASLRRA. He earned a BS and an MBA at Northwestern.

FLYNN President & CEO Flynn has a forty-year career in transportation and supply chain management. Prior to AAWW, Bill was President and CEO of GeoLogistics, Inc., a global freight forwarding and supply chain services provider. Bill held senior management positions at CSX Transportation, CSX Corporation and Sea-Land Service, Inc. At CSX Transportation, he was Senior Vice President responsible for the industrial unit of the railroad and was Senior Vice President responsible for Strategic Planning at CSX Corporation. As Senior Vice President at Sea-Land Service, he was responsible for the company’s business in Asia. Bill serves on the Board of Directors of AAWW. He also serves on the Boards of Republic Services, Ports America, Airlines for America, Business Executives for National Security, and is Board Chairman of the National Defense Transportation Association.

Bank of America Merrill Lynch is one of the world’s largest financial institutions, serving consumers, businesses, and large corporations with a full range of capital raising, banking, investing, asset management, and risk management products and services. ALEXANDER SETNESS Managing Director As Managing Director in Bank of America Merrill Lynch’s Transportation & Infrastructure investment banking group, Setness works with clients across logistics, surface transportation, aviation and transportation infrastructure, with a focus on North America. He joined Bank of America Merrill Lynch in 2015 and is based in New York. Previously, he worked for Citi for over a decade, most recently as Head of EMEA Transportation investment banking based in London. Alex received his BA in Economics and History from Yale University.

The Boeing Company is the world’s leading aerospace company and the largest manufacturer of commercial jetliners and military aircraft combined. ALLEN ADLER Former VP, Enterprise Technology Strategy, Engineering, Operations & Technology Adler produces advance planning and strategies determining the critical technologies in which Boeing will invest hundreds of millions of dollars to research and develop. Adler’s group also enables collaboration of key technologies among Boeing’s multiple global sites. Previously, Adler served at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency as director of the tactical technology office, which sponsored pioneering work in Systems of Systems and unmanned vehicles. He holds a BA from Caltech and a PhD from Princeton, both in physics.

Boyle Transportation is a national motor carrier specializing in cargo that requires exceptional security, safety, and quality control. The company’s primary customers are life science, defense, and aerospace organizations. ANDREW BOYLE Co-Owner & Executive Vice President Boyle is co-owner and Executive Vice President of Boyle Transportation. He was previously an investment banker with J.P. Morgan. He earned an MBA from the Kellogg School of Management and an AB from Bowdoin College. Andrew is a member of the executive committee and board of the American Trucking Associations, a director of the House of Hope, and a trustee of Eastern Bank.

C&K Holdings Acquisition, LLC is the parent company of C&K Trucking, Skyline Express, and AV Logistics. C&K operates one of the largest independent intermodal drayage companies and logistics companies in the United States. MICHAEL BURTON President & CEO In 2003, Burton led the leveraged buyout of C&K Holdings, becoming its president and CEO. Prior to his career at C&K, he was senior vice president and division head of commercial lending at LaSalle Bank N.A. In this position, he provided financial and capital structure guidance to middle market companies. About the Business Advisory Council Unequaled by any academic transportation advisory board in the country, the Northwestern University Transportation Center (NUTC) Business Advisory Council (BAC) has long been a major force behind NUTC’s success. The BAC is struct structure has four distinct levels: Leadership, Sustaining, Individual, and Association. Each level carries a specific set of benefits, as well as a suggested level of commitment for continuing NUTC’s research, education, and outreach initiatives. All BAC members enjoy access to Northwestern’s world-class faculty, opportunities for networking with industry peers, invitations to and involvement in special programs and events, insights into cutting-edge research and industry trends, discounted registration rates for NUTC’s Executive Education Series, and access to Northwestern’s bright student population and renowned Transportation Library. The BAC meets twice yearly on the Evanston campus to foster an exchange of ideas among its members and NUTC faculty, students and staff. The meetings are designed to explore the areas of interest and relevance to BAC member companies. Each meeting features working sessions, panel discussions, and speaker presentations, as well as opportunities for more informal networking and exchange.
