Northern Regional College

Higher Level ApprenticeshipNI in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering Northern Regional College under ApprenticeshipsNI is offering a NEW PILOT Higher Apprenticeship in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering. This programme has been designed to provide the manufacturing and engineering sector in Northern Ireland with high grade technicians and engineers who have practical skills, combined with a higher education qualification. The programme will facilitate progression for a Level 3 Apprenticeship and could also encourage future progression to Level qualifications and enable apprentices to work towards Incorporated Engineer status. The employer will also receive an employer incentive depending on the age of the apprentice and the full attainment of the framework. Depending on the competency based NVQ modules chosen, the framework covers a wide range of job roles in advanced manufacturing and engineering which broadly fit into the higher-level skills requirements for differing sectors, however the pilot programme being offered by DEL in Northern Ireland will most likely follow the Engineering Manufacture or Engineering Maintenance routes   at present.

The competence and knowledge qualifications in this framework contribute to general competence as measured in the Engineering Council’s UK specification and are endorsed by IMechE, IET and the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS). If you have Level 3 Extended Diploma in Engineering, an A-level profile (with STEM subjects) or equivalent qualifications, there may also be opportunities for you, should a company employ you as an apprentice, to further your career. Over the course of the programme you will undertake the following alongside your employment: • Level 5 Foundation Degree in Engineering • NVQ 4 in Engineering Manufacture • NVQ 2 in Performing Engineering Operations (subject to Accreditation of Prior Learning) • NVQ 3 in a subject specific to your role (subject to Accreditation of Prior Learning) The apprenticeship will consist of “off the job” training at college learning engineering practices in the workshop while starting the academic technical certificate. As you progress, you will develop your skills within your role in the company gaining experience and real hands-on knowledge through the expert teams based in the business while you continue your studies at college on a day-release basis.

Level 2 Diploma in Engineering Course Overview The Level 2 Diploma in Engineering balances theory with some great hands-on experience. Trainees will learn how to work safely and effectively, how to interpret engineering information such as 3D drawings and how to use maths to solve different engineering problems. By the end of the course, you will have developed a sound understanding of different mechanical and electrical components, and will be able to identify the properties and characteristics of a range of materials. There will be plenty of opportunities for trainees to demonstrate their new skills such as fabrication and welding, electronics and AutoCAD techniques. How do I join? • Complete an application form and attend an interview. • Take part in an aptitude test (if applicable). What will I study? Edexcel Level 2 Extended Certificate in Engineering units to include: • Applied electrical and mechanical science for engineering. • Using computer aided drawing techniques in engineering. • Selecting and using secondary machining techniques to   remove material. • Operation and maintenance of electrical systems and components. • Fabrication techniques and sheet metal work. • Electrical construction.

Applied electrical and mechanical science for engineering Gives learners an opportunity to investigate many electrical and mechanical units such as charge, current, voltage, resistance and power; mass, weight, force, density, velocity and acceleration. Using computer aided drawing techniques in engineering The learner will be provided with an introduction to CAD and enable them to produce engineering drawings to given industrial standards. Selecting and using secondary machining techniques to remove material This unit introduces the Trainee to secondary machining techniques, focussing on the traditional techniques of turning, milling, drilling and grinding. Operation and maintenance of electrical systems and components The Trainees will be introduced to the function and operation of a variety of electronic systems, circuits and their associated components.

MMA Welding Also known as stick or arc welding, this is the more traditional type of welding where consumable welding rods are used. Although less used than MIG these days MMA is still very useful for heavy sections and particularly outdoors welding jobs. Trainees will be taught to weld butt, overlap, fillet, corner and Tee joints and to make parts comprising a variety of these methods. MIG Welding Also known as continuous wire welding, is the most popular form of welding in industry nowadays. The filler wire is held on a reel inside the welding machine and fed out when a trigger is pressed. It is considered by some to be easier to learn and it is possible to produce quality welds quickly as there is no need to stop and replace rods. Trainees will be taught to weld butt, overlap, fillet, corner and Tee joints and to make parts comprising a variety of these methods.

Fabrication techniques and sheet metal work This unit gives the Trainee with no previous experience of fabrication or sheet metal work an opportunity to work with the principles, materials and processes used in industry.

Bench Fitting This unit allows the Trainee to develop skills in the basic hand tools used in the engineering workshop - pillar drill, hacksaw, files etc. The Trainees make a series of parts, which fit together, using these tools with each part being increasingly challenging. Parts made typically include a G-clamp and interlocking plates.

Electrical Construction This unit will introduce Trainees to the skills and related theory required when selecting electronic components and constructing simple circuits when working as an electronics technician. The practical skills development units: • MMA Welding • MIG Welding • Bench Fitting • Sheet Metal

Sheet Metal In this unit trainees learn the basic skills needed to make parts and assemblies from sheet metal, mostly in mild steel and aluminium. The basics of folding and box-making are covered first which include joining methods such as riveting and spot welding, then Trainees progress to making complete products such as toolboxes, letter boxes and eventually onto ventilation ducting/chimneys.
