Photocopy of Book "Mangels and Memories Stories by Earl Brydges" The book was written by Earl C. Brydges and published in May 2007 On page 48 there is a short story on the Almonte Train Accident entitled "Train Wreck in Almonte". The story tells of how Earl Brydges worked for the army in Ottawa and had been given 5 days off for Christmas. Just as Earl and another army man got on the coach steps there was a jolt. Early fell and was ok, the other man fell on the tracks and knocked out several front teeth. Earl helped with the injured and later got on another train headed to Ottawa at about 1am. [See also 2013.33.1 interview with Ken & Keith Brydges who are the nephews of Earl). Family history papers of John McDonald (1757-1857) and his wife Ishbel MacLaine. The couple came to Canada and settled near Almonte, Ontario in 1821 with their 8 children from Scotland. The 8 children were: Donald, Laughlin, Neil, Sarah, Mary, Flora, Bell (not in chronological). Donald and Laughlin died in 1823 and Bell died in 1824. The porridge passed from Neil to his eldest son Lauchlin McDonald. Lauchlin had 14 children and the porridge pot went to his third son, Reverend John Alexander McDonald. The pot then passed to John Alexander's son Neil Thomas MacDonald (1900-1995) and was then passed to Mary Graeme Lennox, daughter of Neil Thomas MacDonald. Family History was written by Neil Harry McDonald MacDonald Family Porridge Pot In 1821, Mary's great, great, great grandparents, John and Ishbel MacDonald (also spelled McDonald) and their 8 children arrived in Canada from the Isle of Mull in Scotland bringing with them the family's cast iron porridge pot which dates from c. 1747. They settled in Lanark County on 400 acres near present-day Almonte, Ontario. As the current custodians of this historic family artefact, we donated it on October 31st, 2013 to the North Lanark Regional Museum where it now can be seen and appreciated by all the descendants of the original settlers as well as the general public.

Signed on fly leaf "Donated by Doug and Carole MacFarlane October 31, 2014" (From book jacket) Project Remembrance is a fine art collection by Canadian painter Brian Lorimer that inspires remembrance and commemorates the centenary of the onset of the First World War. The paintings are a fresh and compelling rendering of the Canadian experience of the Great War, describing moments of individual fortitude and trial. More than that, they are a call to Canadians to consider and draw inspiration from the strength and character exhibited by our soldiers. Bugler Brown and the Boer War, written by Ian Browne About author: Ian Browne is one of Portland, Ontario's most popular authors. He is a family man, local historian and a great friend to many. Ian Browne's father, Albert Brown was a bugler in the Canadian Mounted Rifles in 1902 serving in the Boer War. The book uses: Globe and Mail "From the Archives" Column; Newspaper articles of the day and Personal diary and letters home of Albert Brown. Albert (Albie) V. Brown served April 16, 1902 to September 13, 1902 with the 3rd Regiment, Canadian Mounted Rifles in the Boer War. He was 18 when he enlisted, but lied and said he was 20. The Brown family lived in Cummings Bridge (Janeville) Ontario (near Ottawa). The Boer War took place from October 1899 to June 1902 (Great Britain vs. Boers). The book is 28cm x 21.5cm. The inside cover page is signed by the donor who is also the author of the book - Ian Browne. Ottawa Valley Turned Fence Posts: A Photographic Journey by Audrey Buckingham Editor, Heather Sword This publication captures the landscape of the Ottawa Valley by focusing on the often unobserved turned fence post. For those lucky enough to know Audrey Buckingham this book needs no explanation, but for those unfamiliar with A.B., please let me explain. A.B. came to Canada in 1946 as a war bride and eventually settled in the Ottawa Valley. Discovering the countryside while driving and riding she soon fell in love with the charming turned fence posts of the Ottawa Valley. A fence designates property lines, contains livestock and protects playing children. And while some fences are intentionally decorative, most are utilitarian. A.B became captivated by the turned fence posts which were part of many of these fences across the Valley. Why would any farmer or land owner spend the countless hours with a lathe to decorate these posts? Intrigued, A.B. began photographing the turned posts and documenting the changes over the past 50 years. She watched as the elements took their toll, as cracks and rot appeared and as once proud posts began to fall. In 2012 A.B. decided to share her journey and began working with Heather Sword to create a publication. The result, Ottawa Valley Turned Fence Posts: A Photographic Journey, by Audrey Buckingham, is now available for sale at the North Lanark Regional Museum in Appleton for $25.00.
