Dear Aggies and Friends of the University, C

hange can be daunting, but at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University change presents opportunities for improvement.

The year 2006-2007 was a period of change and transition for North Carolina A&T as preparations were made to ready the institution for new leadership to align it with the goals and objectives of the University of North Carolina System. A forensic audit revealed improprieties in the handling of some business and educational practices, and after months of strategic planning and implementation, the majority of those issues were addressed. Significant progress was made toward a satisfactory resolve. This report highlights a few of our significant achievements that were made in 2006-2007 and the monetary contributions of the University’s supporters. I hope these pages reaffirm that North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University continues to epitomize its mission of being committed to fulfilling its fundamental purposes through exemplary undergraduate and graduate instruction, scholarly and creative research, and effective public service. I personally thank each of you for your financial donation and unwavering support as we continue to build upon the rich tradition of academic pride, artistic expression and community engagement at North Carolina A&T.

North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University is a public, comprehensive, land-grant and “high research activity” university committed to fulfilling its fundamental purposes through exemplary undergraduate and graduate instruction, scholarly and creative research, and effective public service. The University is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees. Since its inception as a land-grant university in 1891, North Carolina A&T has had a rich tradition of leadership and achievement. Those qualities are still evident today. n Post-Harvest Technologies The School of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences was a major partner in the creation of the North Carolina Research Campus in Kannapolis, North Carolina, with the development of a Center of Excellence for PostHarvest Technologies, and co-hosted an international conference on post-harvest technologies for fruits and vegetables, metabolomics and neutrigenomics. n Spin-off Company The School of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences created North Carolina A&T State University’s first spinoff company, Provagen, which will target the multibillion dollar market for “antibody binding proteins.”

n Climate Control The College of Arts and Sciences received a $12.5 million grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to fund an Interdisciplinary Scientific Environmental Technology (ISET) Cooperative Research and Education Center on the campus. The ISET Center will cooperate with NOAA’s Earth Science Research Laboratory in Boulder, Colo., and is aligned with NOAA’s mission to provide the data needed to address specific climate and weather related concerns, such as hurricanes, droughts, tornadoes, global warming, and ecosystem degradation. ISET Center will provide opportunities for underrepresented students to study in NOAA related sciences. The seven partnering institutions are University of Alaska Southeast, California State University-Fresno, The City College of the City University of New York, Fisk University, University of North Carolina at Pembroke, North Carolina State University and University of Minnesota.

n Good “Grades” The School of Business and Economics successfully completed an accreditation review in business and accounting, and earned the initial accreditation for the Master of Science in Management program. The B-School was commended for establishing effective mission-based objectives relative to key learning goals and for continuous learning assurance processes embedded in the curriculum. As required by AACSB standards, all accredited schools must go through a peer review every five years in order to maintain their accreditation. The School of Education successfully passed all standards of NCATE, which means there were no recommendations.

n Teaching Teachers The School of Education received a content mentoring of mathematics and science teachers’ contract through a National Science Foundation grant in collaboration with Guilford County Schools. This mentoring program involved the entire campus with faculty from all schools and colleges. n Attention to Retention The College of Engineering faculty and staff started the AggiEMentor program that is aimed at improving the retention of engineering students. AggiEMentor blocks scheduling for freshmen during their first two semesters on campus. It is also a virtual mentoring program that allows freshmen to communicate with N.C. A&T alumni through email. n FIRST LEGO The College of Engineering sponsored the Inaugural N.C. Junior FIRST LEGO League Tournament and the N.C. State Tournament for the FIRST LEGO League. Forty teams competed in this year’s state tournament. n Wireless Nurses All senior nursing majors received financial support for standardized testing in their senior level courses, Nursing 512 and Nursing 518. In addition, wireless supported personal data appliances (PDAs) with a preloaded pharmacology textbook were provided for junior students (rising seniors) and faculty for a two-year period. This program will be expanded to include the rising junior nursing majors admitted to the upper division.

n Excellent Teacher Associate professor of biology Mary A. Smith was one of 16 winners of the 13th Annual Awards for Excellence in Teaching, given by The University of North Carolina Board of Governors. Each recipient, nominated by special committees on their home campuses and selected by the Board of Governors Committee on Personnel and Tenure, received a commemorative bronze medallion and a $7,500 cash prize. Dr. Smith believes that excellence in teaching requires ongoing professional development, a commitment to developing students as independent learners, and a focus on building a student-centered learning environment. Recognized by her colleagues as an “innovator in classroom instruction,” she is continually seeking out effective approaches to motivate and engage students in learning science. Smith regularly leads summer studentfaculty research teams at venues such as the Argonne National Laboratory and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, exposing her students to cutting edge technology while developing their research confidence. She has been a professor at N.C. A&T since 1995. n Behind the Scene Students and faculty in the Department of Graphic Communication Systems and Technological Studies, School of Technology, designed the commencement backdrop that was unveiled at the spring 2007 commencement exercise.

n University Studies University Studies (UNST) successfully implemented the foundation courses for the new general education core curriculum. The program has received national and regional attention, having been featured in the January 2006 annual meeting of the American Association of Colleges and Universities along with Butler University of Indiana as a national model of general education curriculum reform. In December 2006, UNST representatives presented the curriculum at the meeting of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). n Information Central Bluford Library offers a dynamic learning environment that remains focused on its mission to support the research and educational efforts of its faculty, staff, and students. Learner-centered services and collaboration dominate the library’s activities. In 2006-2007, the library partnered with the Center for Student Success and University Studies to ensure that students are information literate, and partnerships with faculty helped strengthen the collection through the addition of over 25,000 monographs, 12,000 e-books, and 40,000 federal and state documents. In addition, overall research transactions increased, with the majority of that growth attributed to remote usage and hits to the online databases.

n Re-classified North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University received the Carnegie Foundation classification of “High Research Activity,” a designation that is shared by only 108 universities in the nation, four HBCUs and two universities in the UNC System. “High Research Activity” is the second highest designation that can be given to a university. n Three for Three For the third consecutive year, North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University ranked third among the 16 constituent universities of the UNC System with $41.5 million in research funding for fiscal year 2006-2007. n Honorable Mention The Global Studies Certificate Program received Honorable Mention recognition for the 2007 Andrew Heiskell Award for Innovations in International Education. n Honors Paid The Honors Program formed partnerships with the Divisions of Research and Economic Development and the Division of Student Affairs. Eleven students in the program conducted paid, mentored research under the auspices of the Division of Research during the summer.

n Combating Obesity The Institute for Advanced Journalism Studies launched its first national research project dealing with black youth obesity. Students paired with professional journalists who went out with the primary mission to “seek truth and report it.” The teams attained the project objectives, which were to report on “what we know about black youth obesity,” “what we don’t know about black youth obesity” and “what are the best practices for combating this problem.” As a result, the Institute hosted a Black Youth Obesity Conference in April 2007 and published a booklet, Black Childhood Obesity: What’s Behind It, How to Beat It. n Action Plan The Institute of Public Health led a Pandemic Response Team effort comprised of individuals across the University to develop a comprehensive Pandemic Influenza Action Plan for North Carolina A&T State University for submission to University of North Carolina General Administration. Upon review, UNC rated the plan outstanding and used it as a model for other colleges and universities. n Broken Records The Office of Summer Session and Outreach received record breaking enrollments and revenue generation. The headcount was up by 6.3 percent from 4,133 in 2005 to 4,394 in 2006, and revenue exceeded the $3 million mark for the first time, up over $600,000 the previous year.

n Waste High The Interdisciplinary Waste Management Institute (WMI) established partnerships with Allied Waste Industries ($20,000 in scholarships, internships, guest speakers and student employment), Camp Dresser and McKee Inc. ($16,000 in scholarships/ internships and $3,000 in support of the national environmental conference), Hardin County, Ky., Water District 1 (grease study); and Department of Energy Savannah River Site ($123,000). The WMI awarded $48,000 interdisciplinary scholarships to 45 WMI students. n Nano y Nano The University of North Carolina Board of Governors approved plans to establish the Joint Schools of Nanoscience and Nanoengineering, a partnership with North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro that will be located at Gateway University Research Park in southeast Greensboro. Proposals to establish a Professional Master of Science degree program and a Ph.D. in nanoscience were submitted to UNC General Administration. The state Legislature approved nearly $4 million to begin the development of the Nanotechnology School.

n Joint Venture On May 16, 2007, ground was broken for the South Campus of Gateway University Research Park, a 501(c)3 not-for-profit entity created to manage and operate the joint collaboration between North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University and The University of North Carolina at Greensboro for the purposes of supporting research and economic development within the Triad. The two universities are developing state-of-the-art research facilities for cutting edge work in the life and physical sciences, engineering, technology and other applied science areas. When fully developed, Gateway University Research Park will generate an economic impact in excess of $50 million per year within the Triad region. The South Campus is located on approximately 75 acres of A&T’s farm property in southeast Greensboro. The campus will house multiple research facilities and offer scenic landscaping, pedestrian friendly walkways, sculpture gardens, amphitheatre, auditorium, and roof garden and patio. The North Campus, which currently has eight buildings that are being renovated in support of university research and economic development, is located northeast of Greensboro off Hwy. 29 near Bryan Park.

n Blue & Gold Fever On Sept. 2, 2006, a sellout crowd at Aggie Stadium watched North Carolina A&T and Winston-Salem State renew their football rivalry. It was the largest nonhomecoming crowd in school history and the No. 1 attended on-campus game in Division I-AA that weekend. And on Nov. 2, Aggie students filled the lower portion of Corbett Sports Center for the Aggies’ nationally televised volleyball game against South Carolina State. Nearly 1,000 students attended the game, which was more than three times the normal attendance. n Web Attraction Live basketball stats, photo galleries and video were added to ncataggies.com, the official website of North Carolina A&T Athletics. The site also posted all of the sports media guides online in an effort to save money.

n Two-way Communication The North Carolina A&T State University Alumni Association, the Division of Development and University Relations, and the Division of Information Technology and Telecommunications hosted their first webcast to provide an opportunity for two-way communication between Chancellor Lloyd V. Hackley and alumni across the country. Alumni were able to call in and email questions to the video conferencing site in the General Classroom Building that houses the College of Arts and Sciences. n Chancellor-elect In November 2006, the UNC Board of Governors elected Stanley F. Battle, president of Coppin State University since 2003, as chancellor of North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, effective July 1, 2007. Battle, 55, succeeds Lloyd V. Hackley, interim chancellor since Jim Renick stepped down in June 2005 to accept a senior leadership position with the American Council on Education.
