Nook and the Buffalo & Erie County Public Library

Overview: Introduction to downloading ebooks from the Buffalo & Erie County Public Library onto the Nook ereader. Student Skill Level: Intermediate Requirements: Basic mouse skills, Nook, valid library card, Internet connection (outside the library‟s network) Objectives:  The student will be able to understand the basics of downloading and transferring ebooks from the library web site to a computer: o Go to the Buffalo & Erie County Public Library web site and click Downloads2Go o Choose an ebook  Browse  Basic title search o Check out the ebook o Download the file to a computer  The student will be able to transfer the borrowed ebook file to a Nook: o Download Adobe Digital Editions software o Register ADE with Adobe  Requires an email address o Locate the ebook file on the computer and open it through the ADE software o Transfer the ebook to the Nook

Open Internet Explorer and type www.buffalolib.org in the address bar at the top of the screen.

The library‟s home page loads on the screen:

Scroll to the bottom of this page and click the Downloads2Go link.

3 of 14 Choose an ebook: Browse or Search

Here is part of our electronic collection. You may browse recently added ebooks either at the top of the page, where they are listed with thumbnail images of their covers…

OR

You may browse the entire collection by using the ebook categories listed on the left side of this web page.

To search for a particular book title or author, just type the name into the search box at the top of the screen and click the Go button.

Here is the ebook: (Please note: these results will appear the same if you search or browse)

Check Out the Ebook

Click the title link or the thumbnail image to see more information about the ebook. A thumbnail image is the small picture of the cover of the book, as you see here. If the title is not available, there will be a place a request link in its place. Requests are added to a list and you will be sent an email when the ebook is ready for checkout. Ebooks remain available for checkout for 3 days before becoming available to the next person waiting.

If this is the correct title, and it is currently available, click the add to eCart link on the page.

The selected title will remain in your eCart for 60 minutes so that you may continue browsing. Click the Proceed to Checkout link.

Sign in with your valid Buffalo & Erie County Public Library card (just enter the numbers on the back of the card and click the Sign In button)

Click on the drop-down menu to choose a lending period (usually 7 to 14 days, though some titles are limited to 7 days only)

Click Confirm check out

Download the Ebook File to Computer

To download the ebook file, click the Download button on the screen.

The File Download dialog box appears. Choose the Save button.

Choose a location to save your ebook file. Any location will do fine, just as long as you remember where it is and what it‟s named. I have chosen the My Documents folder.

When the file is successfully transferred to your computer, the Download Complete dialog box will appear. Close this box.

Congratulations! You have checked out and transferred an ebook from the Buffalo & Erie County Public Library to your computer! Now we‟ll download and register the Adobe Digital Editions software you‟ll need to move the book onto your Nook!

7 of 14 Download Adobe Digital Editions Software Now that the file is on our computer, we can download the Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) software we‟ll need to complete the transfer. Click the link to get ADE.

A new window will open. This link is at the top of the page. Click it.

Once again, a window will open. You will now be on the adobe.com web site. Click the Install button (about 1/3 of the way down the page on the left side) and follow the installation instructions as they appear on your screen.

Register Adobe Digital Editions

You will see a new icon on your desktop for ADE upon completion of installation. Double click it to open the program.

The first time you use ADE, you will be prompted to register it. Registration only takes a few minutes and is necessary for transfer to the Nook (if you open an ebook in ADE without registration, it will be locked on that computer. If you register, you may transfer the file to up to 6 other devices.)

Click the I Agree button.

Click Continue.

Click the get an Adobe ID online link.

You will be directed to the Adobe.com web site where you may create an Adobe Account. Click the button.

This is all you need to fill in on this form.

Once you have completed the required fields, scroll to the bottom of the page and click the Continue button.

The Thank You screen will appear upon completion of the form.

Close out of the Internet.

You will now see the Authorization screen in Digital Editions again. Enter your newly-created Adobe ID and password from the web site. Click the Activate button and you‟re set! Digital Editions will be registered and you‟ll be ready to transfer your ebook file to your Nook.

Authorize Your Nook How do I activate a supported eBook device using an Adobe ID? 1. Connect the Nook device to your computer. 2. Open Adobe Digital Editions. Adobe Digital Editions launches and detects the Nook. The 'Device Setup Assistant' dialog box is displayed. 3. Click 'Authorize Device'. Adobe Digital Editions activates the Nook. An icon for the Nook will appear in the lower left corner of Adobe Digital Editions below "Bookshelves." You can now transfer DRM-protected Adobe eBooks to the Nook. (Note: Adobe Digital Editions and the Nook must be activated with the same Adobe ID to transfer DRM-protected Adobe eBooks to the device.) What if my Nook does not activate? In some instances, the Nook contains a file that does not allow the 'Device Setup Assistant' to display. If this happens, please complete the following steps: 1. Close Adobe Digital Editions, and disconnect the Nook from your computer. 2. Re-connect the Nook to your computer. 3. Right click on the drive indicator at the bottom of the screen for the Nook, and left click to open the Nook files.

11 of 14 4. Locate the folder .adobe-digital-editions and delete it.

5. Close the Nook drive display, and safely disconnect the Nook from your computer. 6. Open Adobe Digital Editions. 7. Reconnect the Nook to Computer. You should see the “Device Setup Assistant” dialog box displayed.

8. Click the “Authorize Device” button.

9. To confirm successful Nook authorization, look for the Nook icon below "Bookshelves" in Adobe Digital Editions. Transfer a new eBook title to your Nook.

12 of 14 Locate the Ebook File and Transfer to the Nook

Remember, we downloaded our ebook file to the My Documents folder earlier.

Double click the My Documents shortcut on your desktop and find the file.

CONNECT YOUR NOOK TO THE COMPUTER AT THIS TIME. IT SHOULD BE CHARGED BEFORE FIRST USE.

Double click the ebook file.

Note: if you see the “open book” you are in the Reading View. Switch to the Library View to see these thumbnails.

The ebook will open in ADE and look something like this.

Notice the Nook bookshelf here.

To transfer your library ebook to your Nook, simply place your mouse over the thumbnail, click and hold the left mouse button, and drag the file over the Nook bookshelf. When you see the green plus sign next to the mouse, let up the button.

You may double click the Nook bookshelf to make sure the new file has transferred. (If you don‟t see your book title, then the transfer didn‟t work. Try it again.)

14 of 14 To view the e-book on your computer, click the arrow to the left of the title to reveal these options and select, „Open Item‟. Once the lending period of a title has Expired, you will need to select „Delete Item‟ to remove it from your Nook. You can also view information about the e-book by selecting „Item Info‟. Certain titles may also be returned before their due date by clicking „Return Borrowed Item‟.

Close Adobe Digital Editions.

Use the Safely remove USB Mass Storage Device (this is your Nook) in the system tray at the bottom right side of the computer screen.

Once you see this Safe To Remove Hardware message you may unplug your Nook from the computer and you‟re ready to take your books anywhere!
