It s A Wonderful Life Raising A Child With Down Syndrome and Type I Diabetes Maureen was born on April 1, 1958, the second of four children for James and Dorothy May. The doctor informed them that she was born with Down syndrome. Dorothy visited their neighborhood library to learn more about what this diagnosis would mean for her daughter and their family and found that there was very little information in the medical journals and text books at that time.

Maureen grew into a loving and caring child who brought happiness to everyone she met. Her early education began at the Hudson Montessori School with transportation provided to and from school. When this public transportation was elminated, the family decided to enroll her in the public school system. They were told that children with Down syndrome did not attend public schools. At that point, Jim and Dorothy decided to take legal action to question the legality of excluding students from public school. Two days before school was to begin, the school superintendent came to their home to tell them that Maureen could start school. She graduated from Solon High School in 1978. At age 15, Maureen was diagnosed with Type I diabetes. She is considered a brittle diabetic due to her very large swings in blood sugar. Diabetes requires 24/7, day and night monitoring to recognize any sign of change to take the needed action to control the situation. Jim has been carefully providing Maureen s care for 36 years.

Throughout Maureen s life both Jim and Dorothy have been active advocates and volunteers with the Cuyahoga County Board of Developmental Disabilities (CCBDD). After his retirement from AT&T, Jim was asked to work as a substitute at various workshops. Later he accepted a full time position as a Workshop Specialist at the Maple Heights Adult Training Center. He retired a second time when he was their Habilitation Supervisor. Jim also served as a Board Member and President of the S.A.W. Board, i.e. Sheltered Adult Workshop Board, now named Solutions At Work. In this position, Jim helped to secure work projects for the workshops. He said that the weakened economy has decreased these work opportunities that are so important for the people who attend the eight Activity Centers in Cuyahoga County.

more severe leaving Jim the sole caregiver for Maureen and his wife. This meant that he would arise each morning at 6 a.m. to help Maureen with her morning care so that she could be picked up at 8 a.m. to be transported to the Beachwood Adult Activities Center. At 8:30 a.m., the normal time for his wife to awaken, he would help Dorothy with her morning care, leaving Jim a half hour to have a second cup of coffee and to read his morning paper. So each day went by filled with the growing care of his family. Finally, at the age of 79 and with the diagnosis of aortic stenosis that required surgery for Jim, Jim and Dorothy made the decision to move Maureen into a new home developed by North Coast Community Homes (NCCH). With the assistance of the CCBDD, they were made aware of an opening in a new home that was being developed by NCCH for people with mental disabilities as well as diabetes -- one of two homes now currently available for these special needs individuals. The transition to the new home has not been an easy one primarily due to Maureen s brittle diabetes that must be carefully and correctly monitored throughout the day and night. Jim is working closely with her care providers to help them more fully understand the needs of people with diabetes, and especially with the needs of Maureen s care. Jim s attitude is very upbeat, positive and caring. He speaks very highly of his wife and children and does not express any feelings of burden. His father once told him, Everyone gets a deck of cards to play with. How you play your cards is up to you. Jim says, Mine has been a wonderful life!

incorporated the MBWA practice that I learned from Mr. Lasley into the operations of NCCH. These visits enable us to determine what needs attention and/or improvement. These visits are also very significant to the on-going safety of our tenants, individuals with mental retardation, mental illness and other disabilities. These visits allow us the opportunity to interact directly with our tenants, their family members and their care givers to build stronger working relationships and lines of communication.

What goes around, comes around to everyone s benefit. So how does this apply to North Coast Community Homes? Not only do I visit all of our rental properties each year, I also encourage the staff and Board members of North Coast Community Homes (NCCH) to visit our properties as often as possible. NCCH maintenance staff members are responsible for inspecting our properties every month. We also survey our tenants annually and take daily calls about maintenance issues to make sure that we stay attuned to what is really happening in our homes.

I also want to take this time to thank three very special people -- Louis Strumble and Frank and Helen Gole, who in their estates, provided for the gift of their homes to North Coast Community Homes. These properties have been appraised at $180,000 in total.

I am truly humbled by these generous gifts. Both families left the instructions in their wills that they wanted to donate their homes to a charity reducing their gifts to their own family members, while helping people they had never met. It is one thing to think you know what is happening, and it These are truly acts that represent the best in mankind -is quite another to verify it. This is why I have helping others because it s a good thing to do. 2

PROPERTY DEVELOPMENT & MAINTENANCE UPDATE North Coast Community Homes (NCCH) develops and maintains properties for individuals with mental retardation and developmental disabilities in Cuyahoga, Lake and Stark Counties and for individuals diagnosed with severe mental illness in Summit County. Currently we have 189 properties in total. New Housing New housing includes two homes in Strongsville. One of these homes opened in October 2009 and is now home to four men. It is an accessible home. The second home is a home that was given to NCCH through the estate of Frank Gole. This home will be updated for three women who do not require any accessibility features. In 2010 three new homes may be developed in Cuyahoga County. Home donated to NCCH by the estate of Frank Gole. New Practices A dramatic change is taking place in the Property Management Department of NCCH. A new web-based software system is being implemented in stages. This system will enable NCCH property development work to become paperless, decentralized and more cost efficient. The use of GPS modems will monitor maintenance requirements and fuel cost efficiencies for each departmental vehicle.

Greening of North Coast Community Homes Continues In late 2009, NCCH made the transition from large cargo vans for its maintenance needs with the purchase of a new Ford Transit Connect van. This boxy hauler has a 52-inch interior height, 126 cubic feet of storage and approximately a 1600-lb. maximum load capacity, while still maintaining a respectable 22/25 miles per gallon fuel economy. Note the photograph comparing the size of one of our older vans on the right to that of the Connect van on the left. Comparison in size of Connect van on left to that of one of NCCH s older vans.

Summit County Tenants Janice Stahl, NCCH Housing Services Manager in Summit County, spoke with two new NCCH tenants. They are delighted with their new home that has a balcony -- Robert and Darrell. Previously both men lived in homes that were being closed. With the assistance of Consumer Support Services arrangements were made for them to move into a home maintained by NCCH. They feel comfortable and safe in their new home and know that they can call for help when needed. New Summit County Tenants Robert and Darrell.

Rents Reduced in Lake County Individuals with disabilities are very low income earners, usually earning less than $8,500 annually. Affordable rental costs are, therefore, always a very significant factor of consideration in the community based housing model. One method of controlling costs is to reduce services provided in special needs housing. After discussions with the Lake County Board of Developmental Disabilities, it was determined that NCCH would turn over snow plowing services to its Lake County tenants. This enabled a 13% reduction in monthly rental rates to these tenants. Generally, on-site management may be more cost effective and may enable quicker responses to snow removal needs.

Local snowplowing helps to reduce rents.

NEWS BRIEFS T he Priced O ut i n 2 008 r eport, published by the Technical Assistance Collaborative, Inc. Consortium for Citizens with Disabilities, Housing Task Force, revealed that a lack of adequate housing is a serious obstacle affecting people with disabilities. Escalating rents are unaffordable in many states and SSI incomes have not kept pace with the cost of basic human needs. North Coast Community Homes is working with governmental agencies to try to improve this situation. N orth C oast C ommunity H omes participated in the Akron/Summit County Continuum of Care Project Homeless Connect to assist the homeless who are facing hard times. Over 400 people came to eat, get medical attention and find housing. Free legal services and on-site showers were also available. One attendee said, We felt welcome, like this community cares. We feel like nobody knows we re here or what we re struggling with. 4

NCCH wants once again to thank all our donors who have enabled us to continue our mission of developing and maintaining safe, comfortable and affordable housing for people with disabilities in northeastern Ohio. Major donors were presented special awards of recognition and they included Ian and Gloria Abrams, The Arras Group, The Cleveland Foundation, The Mary S. and David C. NORTH COAST NEIGHBORS Volunteers of North Coast Community Homes (NCCH) provide very important services, including hosting an annual picnic for the tenants of NCCH, organizing and sponsoring an annual reverse raffle fundraising event, serving at many special events, gardening at homes maintained by NCCH and much, much more. The activities for 2010 are now being developed and we would be delighted to include you. You can make a big difference in the lives of the tenants of North Coast Community Homes.

RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT

Tenant Picnic

Reverse Raffle

The reverse raffle event for 2010 will be expanded to a casino night. A new activity for our tenants is in the planning stage for next year. It is an exciting time and you can be a part of the planning stage of these and other activities. Please give us a call at 216-662-1880 and become an important part of North Coast Neighbors. We need you.

Home Sweet Homes Benefit

The activities of the Resource Development Department of North Coast Community Homes (NCCH) include fundraising, communications and marketing in support of our mission of developing and maintaining safe, comfortable and affordable housing for people with mental retardation, mental illness and other disabilities in northeastern Ohio. Fundraising Government funding has been cut back at local, state and national levels. In Ohio alone a $3.2 billion hole in its budget caused legislators to consider cutting back expenditures in many areas. The large negative swing in the stock market caused major decreases in the assets of foundations, corporations and individuals. These effects of a challenging economic environment have, in turn, influenced the funding of the mission of NCCH. In 2009 we saw a 38% decline in foundation support and we experienced declining results from our annual golf outing and our reverse raffle event. We are most grateful for the success of our second Home Sweet Homes benefit that raised over $350,000. Thank you to everyone who participated in this wonderful event. We are also happy to report that our year end 2009 campaign was also successful earning an 18% increase in contributions received in 2008. Needs While funding has been adversely affected by a weakened U.S. economy, the needs of people with disabilities continue. People needing homes are still on waiting lists in each of the counties we serve. The SSI incomes of people with disabilities have not kept pace with the increasing costs of housing thereby causing a deficit between the rents collected by NCCH and actual maintenance costs. The cost of installing hood fire suppression units in each NCCH property to help ensure the safety or our tenants was approximately a quarter of a million dollars. Ways To Give With the ongoing need for housing for people with disabilities, charitable giving is a very significant source of income. Please be aware that there are many alternative avenues for gift giving, including planned giving. With planned giving you may make a commitment for a gift to NCCH in the future as a part of your estate or through a life insurance policy. We recommend that you speak to a professional financial advisor to seek out your best giving method. If you have any questions about gift giving to NCCH, please call Barbara S. Rosenthal at 216-662-1880 or contact her via email at [email protected]. Other methods of giving are outlined on our website at www.ncch.org.
