Non-standard Verb Forms in CSW by David Sutton **** Now amended for CSW15 **** This is an attempt to document all non-standard verb forms to be found in CSW15, the Official Scrabble word-list, excluding verbs where the root form has more than nine letters (unless it gives rise to a shorter form as with COLORBREED/COLORBRED). Verbs are included if they fulfil any of the following criteria: 1. they contain any 'irregular' form i.e. form that is not deducible according to the normal rules of English grammar, whereby the 3rd person singular is formed by the addition of S, the present participle by the addition of ING, and the past tense/past participle by the addition of ED. (In the formation of the present participle and past tense, a terminal silent E is normally dropped, as in RECITE/RECITING, and some consonants are doubled to preserve the sound of a short vowel e.g. BRAG/BRAGGING, DOT/DOTTING, SLAM/SLAMMING: this counts as regular so such forms are not included here, except that all verbs ending in -C are included: the great majority of these change the C to CK for the inflection, which could be consider 'regular' but a few change to CC. 2. they offer a choice of forms. This especially applies to the case where a terminal consonant may be doubled or not, as in LEVELING/LEVELLING or BREVETING/BREVETTING, or a terminal E may be dropped or not, as in WHINGING or WHINGEING. 3. they end in O or I and there may be doubt as to whether the 3rd person singular is formed in -S or -ES, or both. (Note that in fact all verbs ending in I take just S with the exception of CHIVARI which takes ES) 4. they are regular but of exotic origin and doubt may arise as to the correct form e.g. SJAMBOK/SJAMBOKKING, ASSEGAAI/ASSEGAAIING. 5. they are regular and not of exotic origin but are 'interesting' in some way as having potential for uncertainty or confusion: this applies especially to regular verbs that have the same root form as irregular verbs e.g. TEAR meaning 'to shed tears' gives a regular TEARS/TEARING/TEARED, and is shown after the irregular TEAR meaning 'to rip' which gives TEARS/TEARING/TORE/TORN. For ease of study, properly irregular forms are highlighted in red. Non-native speakers may like to note that most, but by no means all, of these irregular forms are obsolete or archaic. The following abbreviations are used in the definitions: (Ob) Obsolete (Ar) Archaic (Sp) Spenser (Sh) Shakespeare (Mi) Milton (Di) Dialect (Sc) Scots (US) United States
