That though is the joy of wine … there is a great deal of variety! In this section our House wine gives uncomplicated green apple flavours; our Muscadet transports you to steelier more Atlantic climes; our Anjou gives you medium-bodied quite urgent fruit flavours … and our white Crozes Hermitage verges into apple and honey territory. So ... quite dry and fruity, very dry, medium dry and well, something else!

Melon de Bourgogne 12% [code 205] ‘Sur lie’ are the key words here: this means that the wine stays in contact with the lees (dead yeast cells left over from fermentation) right through until bottling (usually March). The wine must be bottled directly off its lees and not go through any filtration process either. This gives the wine a really creamy ‘mouth-feel’ which together with its fresh fruity flavours makes this one of the all time greats with seafood. Do not confuse this with gallons of cheap acidic mouthwash that also masquerade as Muscadet!

Chenin 11% [code 210] Situated South of Anjou, where the clay and sand soils seem to work so well with the highly versatile Chenin Blanc grape, this wine has distinct white flower and peach characteristics. Softer in style than the Muscadet above, not quite as uncompromisingly dry, but the grape’s natural acidity ensures a clean crisp mineral finish. There is a soft unctuous element on the palate that will appeal to those who like their whites ‘off-dry’.

Chenin 12.5% [code 220] Think of glistening freshly harvested green vegetables and this will give you an idea of the punch that this wine delivers. There is a distinct minerality and nothing soft or middle of the road about this wine. It has a bright racy acidity, a lemon rich and honeyed middle with a dry flinty finish. Refreshing, obviously, mouthfilling too. Jean Michel and Bruno Pieaux are the fourth generation of this family to be producing top quality Vouvrays.

Marsanne, Roussanne 13% [code 575] These two grape varieties seem to be taking on a bit of a cult status and are definitely coming into fashion. Marsanne gives acacia, quince, apple, almond and honey flavours. Roussanne gives an elegant touch of apricot and hawthorn, honeysuckle even. The wine has good but light acidity and has a full ‘fat’ mouthfeel. We are rather intrigued by this new find and interested to hear your comments. It’s definitely a bit different.

Grape Variety: SAUVIGNON BLANC This grouping is a little easier. Sauvignon Blanc’s aroma tends to be instantly recognisable: gooseberries, nettles and tomcats are the most widely used descriptions. These are wines that zing with urgent vegetal flavours and the grape is in probably its purest form in the Loire, the most notable appellations being Sancerre and Pouilly Fumé. Unmasked by oak, Sauvignon grapes produce among the most zesty and refreshing dry white wines in the world.

Bacchus 11.5% the English ‘Sauvignon’ [code 800] This well-sited chalk soil vineyard, the cool climate, and the excellent Bacchus grape makes this wine England’s answer to Sancerre, which is why this wine appears in the Sauvignon section. 2014 was another fabulous year for us and after a season of very careful work in the vineyard we knew we were picking perfectly ripe fruit … which our winemaker, Vince Gower then has turned into fabulous wine. It positively sings with elderflower hedgerow flavours and now has a very enthusiastic following.

Sauvignon 13% [code 222] We have resisted Sancerre for the last few years, thinking we were not really being ‘cutting-edge’ enough. Was it just too predictable to list a Sancerre? A visit to Pascal Balland last year has changed all that. That well-known saying about London comes to mind: bored with London/Sancerre? – bored with life?! Mouth-tingling acidity, steely gooseberry depth, tight dry grown-up finish – for grown-up fun-loving wine drinkers.

Sauvignon 13% [code 225] Pascal and Rachel Kerbiquet work on a 10 hectare vineyard in the commune of Saint Andelain … and are exactly the type of growers we like to deal with. They are completely passionate about every facet of the production of this very delicious Loire Sauvignon. The hard calcareous and flint soils ensure good minerality and liveliness as well as that famous gun-flint aroma which smells exactly as though two flints are being rubbed together. Pouilly Fumé is made just across the bridge from Sancerre, but has a typically ‘fatter’ style.

Grape Variety: CHARDONNAY Climate has a big influence on the character of wine produced from the Chardonnay grape. In warmer climes, yellow apple and pineapple are typical flavours and the wines can be ‘fatter’ on the tongue. In cooler climes the apples are greener (!), there are hints of lime and the wines have higher acidity and what we call ‘grip’. Chablis produces perhaps the most austere and pure cool climate Chardonnays; Chardonnays from a little further South in Burgundy are usually a bit fuller, but this is an area where the importance of the wine maker is most accentuated and styles can vary a great deal. Vanilla, apple, tropical fruits - Chardonnay is not an easy grape to pigeon-hole.

Chardonnay 14% [code 105] A warm climate Chardonnay. This estate is located about 20km East of Carcassonne and extends over chalk and clay soil, thus producing typically full-bodied wines. This chardonnay is elegant and lively on the palate, with very distinct floral (acacia, hawthorn), grilled and vanilla touches. Classic South West France chardonnay. SAINT-VÉRAN 2013, Domaine Thomas, ‘Maison Rouge’, Vielle Vigne, Maconnais

Chardonnay 13% [code 701] Lucien Thomas creates full pure flavours and has been regularly acclaimed by the critics. The site of this vineyard is in a very sunny heat-retaining south-west facing amphitheatre, so the grapes can attain perfect ripeness and concentrated flavour. The yields are carefully contained and this particular wine is from a block of vines that is 70 years old. The wine bursts with ripe pear and citrus flavours and has a long mineral finish.

Chardonnay 12.5% [code 710] A first-rate example from a strictly family concern. When we taste Chablis we are not looking for a ‘fat’ fruity style, so reminiscent of chardonnays grown in warmer climates. Chablis is in France’s most northerly wine-making climate and the Lavantureux brothers practise cold wine-making techniques in order to retain the freshness, subtlety and essential acidity that give good Chablis its green lip-smacking qualities. Subtle steely refreshment.

Chardonnay 13% [code 710] Minerality, freshness, liveliness are the qualities shown here … all put together by the slightly larger-than-life winegrowing personality: Alain Roy. Montagny, in Burgundy’s Côte Chalonnaise, is a good half-day’s drive South of Chablis and anyone used to driving through France knows how much the climate changes as you travel South. It just gets a bit warmer; this means a wine that is a fraction higher in alcohol, a bit richer and fuller in the mouth.

SANTENAY ‘Sous La Roche’ 2012, Domaine Bachey-Legros, Burgundy

Chardonnay 13.5% [code 725] Sometimes … you have to be ‘in it’ to ‘win it’. We visited Bachey-Legros last year and this white Burgundy really shone. Could we buy some? Bachey looked rather doubtful; rather hesitant … he did not have much and wanted to keep it for his loyal locals. More mouth-gurgling, more groans of pleasure ... so much so that eventually he could not resist our enthusiasm for this wine. Result: a small allocation gained for this list. A worthwhile visit!

POUILLY-FUISSÉ Climat ‘Sur La Roche’ 2014, Gilles Morat, Maconnais

Chardonnay 13% [code 712] The climat ‘Sur La Roche’ is the name of the particular parcel of vines on a limestone South East facing slope by the Rock of Vergisson. It was a bit of a eureka moment when we tasted this wine: it has to be one of the best wines we have ever tasted from the Maconnais and easily rivals some much more expensive offerings from Burgundy’s Cote de Beaune. The wine is powerful and concentrated on the palate with beautifully tight mineral character.

MEURSAULT 2014, ‘Cuvée Saint Jean’, Vincent Latour, Burgundy

Chardonnay 13% [code 361] This is definitely one of Burgundy’s most celebrated white wines. In almost all instances I like these wines to have a bit of nervosity, so I do like them still to be quite young. It is important to choose a good wine-maker too because white Burgundies are about the most variable of all wines. The use of oak has to be judged perfectly; it should not mask the fruit or conceal the essential acidity. Vincent Latour has really excelled here: very delicious indeed and worth the money. Expect to pay at least £25 more per bottle in most other restaurants!

ANJOU ROUGE 2014/15, Domaine de la Treille, Gabriel Taillée, Loire

Cabernet Franc 12.5% [code 250] This wine seems to appeal instantly. The Cabernet Franc grape gives very fresh red fruit flavours on the nose. It is soft and elegant rather than attacking and has an earthy, smoky finish. The green and vegetal flavours, again so typical of Cabernet Franc, add crispness and raciness. The wine feels very genuine, un-mucked-about-with, natural, unforced … charmingly uncomplicated.

GAMAY DE TOURAINE 2014, Domaine Desloges, Loire

Gamay 12.5% [code 252] From one of the most consistently good Lore growers, this delicious gamay wine is more than a match for a good Beaujolais Villages. These vines thrive in silt and clay soil and deliver typically lively and fruity gamay fruit flavours with good length of flavour too. Domaine Desloges is situated in Montou-sur-Cher which is near the celebrated Chateau de Chenonceau.

FULLER WINES BUT THE EMPHASIS IS STILL ON FRUIT & LIGHTNESS OF TOUCH Grape Varieties: GAMAY PINOT NOIR These wines come from the Beaujolais, the Côte Chalonnais, Burgundy proper and the Loire. With the exception of the Gamay grape used in the Beaujolais (a good Cru Beaujolais would be among my desert island wines), they all feature the Pinot Noir grape except for our excellent new Bourgueil from the Cabernet Franc grape. When successful, Pinot Noir can produce some of the most sublime wines. In their youth the wines have distinct red fruit characteristics (strawberries, raspberries) with a definite sweetness of touch. As the wines age they will develop gamey notes and they can have amazing length of flavour.

BOURGUEIL 2014, Domaine des Mailloches, Cuvée Vielles Vignes, Loire

Cabernet Franc 12.5% [code 261] The Loire, being in the Northern half of France and therefore a cooler climate, is never going to produce blockbuster reds, but this Bourgueil nevertheless has quite rich tannins, very distinct cassis fruit flavours with mushroom and cracked pepper aromas. Do remember though that tasting notes are very subjective and you might find quite different flavours! I can tell you that this wine does have some pedigree coming from vines of 100 years old or more and that red Loires are quite ‘the thing’ at the moment. PAGE 4-22.12.16-[12]-OA

BOURGOGNE Pinot Noir 2014, Domaine Dupré, Burgundy

Pinot Noir 12.5% [code 750] We are well aware that there are some fabulous Pinot Noirs being produced around the world now, particular favourites coming from New Zealand and California. Burgundy still remains the traditional home of Pinot Noir though … and has always been the most terroir-conscious of wine-growing areas. We cannot do them all. This is just one man’s introduction to perhaps the most mercurial of all grapes: Jean-Christophe Dupré produces a wine of some complexity and personality.

Gamay 13% [code 745] Saint-Amour is one of the ten Beaujolais Crus located in the Northern hillier part of the Beaujolais just to the south of the Maconnais. Domaine des Pins displays spiced red berry fruits which are full in the mouth and the wine finishes with a marked minerality. Crus Beaujolais are still mentioned in the same breath as Beaujolais Nouveau and sales have suffered because of this. Not fair .. this is a wonderful wine!

SANCERRE Rouge 2014, Domaine Pascal Balland, Loire

Pinot Noir 13% [code 265] We fell in love with this wine on our last visit to Pascal Balland (June 2014). Pascal is rather a rustic, very genuine and completely passionate winemaker …. slightly the absent-minded professor type, not worldly at all, rather a scruffy individual you might think. Looks deceive though … this man is a gifted winemaker. Red Sancerre is always a delicate wine, but very delicious if handled well, as it most certainly is here.

MERCUREY 2014, Domaine du Meix-Foulot, Côte Chalonnaise, Burgundy

Pinot Noir 13% [code 760] The Meix-Foulot estate, now run by Agnès Dewé de Launay, has been in the same family’s ownership for 200 years. Here there is a very real sense of terroir, the essence of which is soil, climate and grape variety. This wine really expresses the pure fruit characteristics of Pinot Noir, but the wine has a very clear sense of place too. It’s not just a French Pinot Noir; it comes from one of the best placed and most important domaines in Mercurey, certainly one of the most picturesque of Burgundian domaines too. Feel the pedigree.

Pinot Noir 13.5% [code 775] Low-yielding vines, deeply-anchored roots, obvious wine-making skill and family passion … all these elements help to produce a really elegant wine from the Southern end of Burgundy’s Côte de Beaune. This is a wine of some power with intense cherry and liquorice flavours with distinct toasted elements in the mouth. So Burgundian in character: soft, earthy red fruit flavours, powerful and yet silky, with the old vines helping to produce extra complexity.

Grape Varieties: SYRAH GRENACHE MOURVEDRE CARIGNAN MALBEC CABERNET SAUVIGNON MERLOT CABERNET FRANC PETIT VERDOT You need to look in the Southern half of France for these wines. Bigger wines generally mean slightly higher alcohol levels, which are caused by the grape varieties used and most importantly the sunshine and warmth they receive, so they tend to be made in the warmer parts of France. Meatier wines place less emphasis on delicate fruit flavours and more on depth of body and flavour.

CHÂTEAU LA CHOUPPE TAILLEFER 2011, Minervois, Languedoc

Syrah, Grenache 14% [code 155] This château bottled Minervois is aged in oak barrels and seems good value at this price. The grapes are grown on stony, alluvial soils and the deeply coloured wine has intense, complex aromas of bramble fruits and vanilla spice. Lovely weight and mouth-feel with flavours of cassis, damson, redcurrant and raspberry … small wonder why we are so enthusiastic about the much-improved wines from South West France.

LA VIGIE 2012, Corbières Cru Boutenac, Languedoc

Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre, Carignan 14% [code 160] Corbières-Boutenac, created in 2005, is a new red wine appellation of the Languedoc region in Southern France. It covers ten communities clustered round an elevated ridge of limestone about 20m from the Mediterranean Coast. The land is Provençal in character and the soils are poor in nutrition … excellent; the less fertile the soil the deeper the roots of the vines have to go for water and nutrients. This breeds character and real ‘goût de terroir’… distinctly rich and herb-scented. PAGE 5-22.12.16-[12]-OA

CÔTES du RHÔNE 2014, Cuvée des Princes D’Orange, Christian Bonfils, Southern Rhône

Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre 14.5% [code 560] Domaine de Boissan is way above normal Côtes du Rhône quality. There are Burgundian influences at work because Christian and Cathy (who is from Burgundy originally) like to preserve the wine’s delicacy; they therefore avoid overripe fruit and excessive alcohol at all costs. This was never designed to be a blockbuster Southern Rhône; it is a wine that expresses the delicacy of the fruit and the Southern hot character of the land.

Malbec 14% [code 450] The Argentinians have made the Malbec grape their own but it has always been used in Cahors in the Lot region of France. The poor soils mean the vines work extra hard for every grape produced, leading to very distinctive flavours: aromas of spice, herb, plum, blueberry, violets on the nose. The palate is loaded with mineral, floral, spice and ripe fruit aromas and smooth tannins. Big, with good mouth-feel.

CROZES HERMITAGE ‘Courbis’ 2013, Domaine Jean-Louis Pradelle, Northern Rhône

Syrah 12.5% [code 580] Dark red, fresh spiciness, red fruits and flowers … are just a few of the adjectives we can use here. Lots of pebbles in the soil catch the sun and bounce the rays back into the vine’s canopy, thus ensuring well-ripened grapes and contributing to those typical spicy qualities. Vinification is in concrete, then the wine is judiciously aged in oak. This is good Syrah from the Northern Rhône with grippingly tight edges.

GIGONDAS Vieilles Vignes 2014 Domaine de Boissan, Southern Rhône

Grenache, Syrah 14.5% [code 570] The vineyards have vines that are 40 - 50 years old. The quantity of grapes per hectare harvested is therefore quite low but the quality and depth of this wine is exaggerated. A heady nose is followed by very distinct black fruit flavours. This is certainly a ‘big’ wine, but, as with their Côtes du Rhône, complexity and delicacy are retained too. A Gigondas of this quality is up there with Châteauneuf du Pape.

CHÂTEAU de MERCUÈS 2014, Cahors

Malbec 13% [code 470] Concentrated silken dark cherry flavours with a voluptuously long and smooth finish. Refined, full, mouth-filling, warming, envelopping … the adjectives just go on. Suffice to say, this wine really comes into its own as the ultimate winter-warmer and has all the power to accompany richer meat dishes. This wine seems to have been particularly well-received and Bordeaux lovers have been well pleased with this alternative.

ST-JOSEPH 2012, Domaine Jean-Louis Pradelle, Northern Rhône

Syrah 13% [code 585] Bit of a nerve-tingler: clean, gutsy, rugged, yet fine too. Syrah gives this wine a darkly aromatic personality. It is certainly strong flavoured with refined notes of pepper and spices, together with violet notes mixed with minerals. Big flavours, but distinctly edgy too, with definite freshness. Another winner from the Northern Rhône.

CHÂTEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE 2013/15, Domaine Juliette Avril, Southern Rhône

Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre 14% [code 590] This is a typically rich and full flavoured example with very pronounced Châteauneuf notes that are so enhanced by the heat and herbs of the South. The blending of the three different grape varieties, again typically Châteauneuf, really adds complexity to this delicious wine. Lovely cherry, sweet plummy flavours with great length in the mouth. Pretty reasonably priced too with our new fixed mark-up pricing policy!

VIEUX CHÂTEAU GAUBERT 2000, Graves Rouge, Bordeaux

Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot 12.5% [code 336] This wine is among some of the Graves region’s most concentrated wines and has a fine track record for ageing, most vintages taking a minimum of a decade to get near their peak. It has a deep intense red colour, complex aromas and flavours, especially rich, ripe cassis flavours and a persistent long finish; excellent structure and vitality. Absolutely ready to drink now and a timely new arrival to the list in time for the autumn.

LES TOURELLES DE LONGUEVILLE 2010, Pauillac, Bordeaux

Cabernet Sauvignon blend 13.5% [code 338] Those in the know will recognise that this is the best value wine on the list. This is the second wine of the famous Château Pichon-Baron and is fantastic in its own right. The 2010 vintage was one of the finest ever at this estate. Wonderful pure cassis flavoured fruit with an opulent full-bodied style, this outdoes many a Cru Classé. If you find this wine on another restaurant wine list expect to be paying in excess of £100.00 This wine has always been a bit of a wine trade secret … no longer! PAGE 6-22.12.16-[12]-OA

The chalky subsoil is ideal for the Cabernet Franc vines, which produce distinct blackberry and red fruit flavours that lead onto a long thoughtprovoking finish. This vineyard is run organically and the wine has grassy, herbaceous qualities. Being from the Northern half of France – i.e. where the weather is cooler, it is quite light in character, but its long Cabernet Franc flavours are very pronounced; this gives a very satisfying mouthful.
