«La Loire à Vélo» cycling trail

Val de Loire – an international tourist brand In 2012, the French Government, represented by Atout France, and the two regions Pays de la Loire and Centre-Val de Loire decided to develop a joint project to promote the Val de Loire as a tourist destination. The area covered by the brand Val de Loire extends from the Loiret to the Loire Estuary, encompassing the river itself, the UNESCO-listed Loire, the Royal Loire and its Châteaux, cradle of the history of France, the wine region and gardens of France stretching as far as the estuary, the gateway to the Atlantic Ocean. In December 2014, the Val de Loire was one of the 11 winners of the first call for proposals for “destination contracts”. The aim of these destination contracts is to organise some 20 internationally-renowned destinations in France by bringing together all the stakeholders in the sector. The Val de Loire is now a recognised tourism brand! After “La Loire à Vélo” cycling trail, “Châteaux de la Loire” and “Loire wines”, “Val de Loire” is the fourth tourism brand to be shared between the two regions. • The www.valdeloire-france.com website Launched online in 2015, www.valdeloire-france.com was set up as a website inviting people to discover a destination in which lifestyle and hospitality are everything. With its promise of “A trip to France”, the “Val de Loire” is an area that boasts many of France’s assets. The website serves four purposes: to attract, plan, organise and implement. Richly illustrated with videos and images, the website aims to be immersive, emphasising the user experience to influence decisionmaking, attract visitors and retain their loyalty. This new digital device promotes sight-seeing trips and visits, highlights major attractions and also little-known idyllic spots. Your holidays in the Val de Loire have already started when you visit www.valdeloire-france.com (English version coming soon).

Experience history at the Château of Meung-sur-Loire The Château of Meung-surLoire was built at the beginning of the 13th century. Altered and extended many times over the centuries, it was the residence of the Bishops of Orléans until the Revolution and known as the “Château with Two Faces” due to its medieval and classical facades. In 2016, the château is offering several trips

through the ages with live entertainment provided by history enthusiasts. “Moments in History” (2nd July to 28th August 2016) will present the château’s different facets with duelling knights, cooking workshops, historic games, etc. The “Historical Fashion Weekend!” (8th & 9th October 2016) will be a tribute to Paris Fashion Week combining contemporary and historic dress. www.chateau-de-meung.com

Night-time events at the châteaux At nightfall, the lights of the châteaux reflect in the Loire, stimulating the visitor’s imagination. The horizon captivates and illuminations vary with a dreamlike quality from château to château. Some châteaux are lit by candles, others by lanterns, while shadows play off the facades, sometimes dancing to the narrations of storytellers and Renaissance music rhythms. This is the magic of the sound and light shows staged at the Royal Château of Blois and Château of Amboise. These shows provide a fresh aspect to the scheduled night visits under the stars, such as the Chaumont-sur-Loire International Garden Festival, the Chenonceau nighttime walk or the “Night of a Thousand Fires” in Villandry. www.loire-chateaux.co.uk – www.valdeloire-france.com

Christmas at the Loire Valley Châteaux

Following in the footsteps of the Château of Chenonceau and Château of Amboise, a number of the great Loire Valley châteaux have joined forces to provide an offer for the holiday season. The idea is to combine the festive atmosphere of Advent with that of places with exceptional heritage. From December through to the beginning of January, facilities and events are organised in the major sites - Chenonceau, Royal Château of Amboise, Azay-leRideau, Royal Fortress of Chinon, Royal Château of Blois,

Cheverny, Regional Domain of Chaumont-sur-Loire, National Domain of Chambord, Sully-sur-Loire – as well as in the Loiret châteaux such as Beaugency, Meung-surLoire, La Bussière, La Ferté St Aubin… offering visitors the opportunity to delve everyday into the enchanting world of the end of year festivities. All in the enchanting setting of the great Loire Valley châteaux, with frost on the windows and fires in the fireplaces. www.loire-chateaux.co.uk – www.valdeloire-france.com

Modern art at the Château of Montsoreau A château with origins dating back one thousand years and clad all in white. It looks down on the Loire and is situated between the Anjou, Touraine and Poitou regions and at the heart of the pretty village bearing its name. While its beauty inspired Alexandre Dumas – the plot of his historical novel La Dame de Monsoreau was played out within its walls – this exceptional site now hosts a major modern art centre. With an outlook on the river and the world, it exhibits works from the Art & Language international arts and literary movement (group of English and American artists and inventors of conceptual art) owned by Philippe Méaille, the new owner, a collector from Anjou. www.chateau-montsoreau.com

Visit to the official museum of the LU biscuit factory in the Château of Goulaine The Maison LU (an iconic French biscuit brand from Nantes) tells the history of the marriage between JeanRomain Lefèvre and Pauline-Isabelle Utile. After they were married, they decided to open the “Lefèvre Utile” pâtisserie, which soon became well-known: these were the origins of the Maison LU. Today the official museum of the Maison LU, housed in the Château of Goulaine, invites visitors to discover the story of Jean-Romain Lefèvre who changed the habits of the people of Nantes with his pastries. www.chateaudegoulaine.fr

Portrait: Eleanor of Aquitaine, a Queen at Fontevraud Eleanor of Aquitaine, Queen of France then England through her marriage to Henri II Plantagenet, is the emblematic figure of the Royal Abbey of Fontevraud. A political strategist and visionary, she negotiated, trained and provided her sons with arms in order to retain the English throne. For Richard the Lionheart, her favourite son, she even acted as Regent of the Empire, suppressing rebellions singlehandedly. She also maintained close links with Fontevraud, drawing closer ties to manage the affairs of the kingdom after the death of her husband. She ended her life there and died in 1204, aged in her eighties. Eleanor of Aquitaine is buried in Fontevraud, where her recumbent effigy can be seen. She holds in her hands an open book recalling that she was the friend of «Poets and troubadours». www.fontevraud.fr

GARDENS

Harvests at the Château of La Bussière A large household who needed feeding lived at La Bussière in the 18th century, hence the creation of this one-and-a half hectare vegetable garden enclosed with walls and with two wrought-iron wells, a greenhouse and a garden to brighten up the château and church with flowers. Used today for family consumption, the vegetable garden, lovingly tended by Geneviève de Chasseval, her children and grandchildren, is wonderfully authentic and poetic. Each square section has a specific purpose: vegetables, fruit, old roses, medicinal and aromatic plants. The vegetable square is divided equally between salad varieties, carrots and cabbages planted with imagination to create contrasts between the shapes and colours. The berry square has gooseberries, blueberries, strawberries and raspberries to make delicious homemade syrups. In the orchard, apple trees, pear trees, some of which one hundred years old, plum trees and cherry trees stretch their well-aligned branches. Flowers are everywhere, pastel shades with rose and white dominating as in the 18th century, to marry with the brick colour of the facades. In season, visitors will take pleasure collecting berries from the garden, to take home at the end of their visit, for baking a delicious, homemade tart when back from their walk. www.chateau-de-la-bussiere.fr

Chefs in the garden! “Vincent, country chef”, in Bourgueil. An original place to dine! Vincent Simon left his life as a chef in Belgium to open a restaurant unlike any other in Touraine, at the heart of the “Garden of France” and the Bourgueil appellation wine area. With his wife Olivia, they welcome maximum 10 to 12 guests for each service and offer a menu based exclusively on fresh produce from their vegetable patch and farmyard or found from producers in the surrounding area. http://vincentcuisinierdecampagne.blogspot.fr/ “Le Saint Honoré”, in Tours. This beautiful restaurant is very close to the cathedral. Chef Benoît Pasquier is passionate about the vegetables he grows year-round in a garden beside the Loire. He uses the fruit and vegetables grown there for his menus, with an increasing number of local varieties which he replants in his vegetable garden and also produces honey. www.lesainthonoretours.fr Christophe Hay, award-winning chef of “la Maison d’à Côté” in Montlivault, has a taste for fine Loire Valley products. A native of Loir-et-Cher, he has perfect knowledge of local products and their terroir which he uses to full advantage. With an emphasis on tasty cooking, the chef offers an offbeat gastronomic journey and advocates inventive, lively cooking. He reveals the full richness and subtlety of the region’s tasty treasures. Emphasis is particularly placed on vegetables, herbs, fruit, aromatic and other plants which he grows and takes tender care of at the “Potager d’à Côté”, his garden a short distance from the village. Every day he chooses, twists and scrupulously smells the “handmade” garnishes which adorn the dishes made with produce with the market. www.lamaisondacote.fr Contacts : CRT Centre - Val de Loire / Vanessa TRENEY - +33(0)2 38 79 95 19 - [email protected] Agence régionale Pays de la Loire / Virginie PRIOU - +33 (0) 240 89 89 87 - [email protected]

New journeys at Terra Botanica in Angers, the leading European park dedicated to plants The leading park dedicated to plants in Europe, with more than 275,000 exceptional plants from every continent, recounts the fantastic odyssey of these plants to anyone willing to listen. All sorts of curious attractions – tree houses on the Ile aux Lutins, ride a treetop trail in a hollowed nutshell 5m above the ground, 4D projections, etc. – unrivalled entertainment and events. Terra Botanica combines nature displays and understanding of living plants. In the Botanical Odyssey, children and adults sail on board a gabare (traditional Loire boat) through medicinal plants, vines and flowers which have been grown for centuries on the banks of the Loire. Over the seasons, buds burst open with a thousand different perfumes in a multi-coloured show: magnolias, lilies, water lilies, lotus and many others. From the ‘Grandmothers’ Walk’ in the ‘Extremes Greenhouse’ and passing through the ‘Eastern Lands’ or the Rose Garden, each plant tells its history, our history. It belongs to us and we are passing this history on. Since the 2015 season, a hot air balloon measuring 34m in diameter – the largest in the world – “raises” 30 passengers 150m above the flowers! A journey in the Nantes gardens In 2016, for the fourth consecutive year, the City of Nantes has invited Claude Ponti, the children’s fairytale star, to transpose the fantastic characters illustrated in his albums for inclusion within the Botanical Garden. These characters were designed especially for the Botanical Garden by the author, then made in three dimensions and very large format from drawings by the artist, by teams from the City’s Green Areas and Environment Department and other local partners. Women of the wine world with Tessa Laroche – Savennières AOC

Tessa Laroche owns and operates the Domaine aux Moines in Savennières, near Angers, a place that blends femininity with ancestral knowledge. In 2003, she took over the operation from her mother’s family. The estate is special because women have been in charge for a century. The vineyard work is the same but Tessa Laroche knows how to highlight their sensitivity: “our femininity is revealed in our production...”. The wines have character, just like women! In 2006 and in accordance with her way of living and thinking, she launched the “organic agriculture challenge” and obtained the certification after three years. www.domaine-aux-moines.com

Recipe: Nantes Beurre blanc - 2 shallots - 5cl of vinegar - 10cl of white wine - butter Sauté the chopped shallots in a little vinegar. Reduce them, then remove from the heat… Drain the excess vinegar, then add some dry white wine. Repeat the operation then remove from the heat. Drain the rest of the white wine then leave it to cool. When the mixture has cooled, put it on low heat, then incorporate the lumps of butter, salted with Guérande or Noirmoutier salt of course, while stirring gently and continuously, take your time! A city of infinite attraction and appeal, with the charm of its past tightly interwoven with its present and alive more than ever in the beating heart of its old district which has been beautifully redeveloped, in the monuments which tell its two-thousand-year history, in the ever faithful recollection of its heroine Joan of Arc, in its quays which are put to magnificent use, where the Loire never fails to provide a great show, and in its gardens and outstanding parks. Remarkable tapestries in Angers The imposing château-fortress of Angers is the setting for the remarkable Apocalypse Tapestry. With the words: “It seems to us that we can read our futures in these wool-stretched walls”, Jean Lurçat evokes the aesthetic and artistic shock that he felt in 1938, standing before the imposing medieval wall covering of the Apocalypse, presented at that time to the Cathedral of Angers. Two decades later, he began Le Chant du Monde (The Song of the World) – a monumental woven work which was unfinished on his death. On display since 1968 in the 12th-century old hospital Saint-Jean, Jean Lurçat

delivered his own vision of the world in this work which was epic, poetic and humanistic. A message of peace and fraternity which is still current. In the Jean Lurçat Museum as part of national commemorations marking fifty years since the death of the artist, a large exhibition, “The Apocalypse According to Jean Lurçat”, questions his relationship with the sacred text and puts his work into perspective through the work of resident designers. www.musees.angers.fr / www.angers.monuments-nationaux.fr

Leonardo da Vinci: 1516-2016

It was in 1516 at the age of 64, that Leornardo da Vinci undertook his last great trip to France, and more particularly Amboise. He responded to an invitation from the King of France, inviting him to join the French Court and express his talents. The King granted him protection and an income and lodged him in the Château of Le Clos Lucé in Amboise. It was in this place that the genius ended his days. So in 2016 we are celebrating the

500th anniversary of the arrival of Leonardo at the Royal Château of Amboise (where he is buried) and the Château of Le Clos Lucé. More generally, through Leonardo, the Italian influence of the area is being celebrated: there were in fact many Italian artists who came to the Loire Valley. www.chateau-amboise.com - www.vinci-closluce.com

St Martin de Tours 2016 316-2016: this year we are celebrating the 1,700th anniversary of the birth of Saint Martin, one of the major figures in Christianity and the universal symbol of sharing. Did you know that this character was buried in Tours Basilica and that he is closely linked to the city? He was the first Bishop of Tours and the focus of quite a sizeable pilgrimage when he died (the 3rd largest in the world with Rome and Jerusalem) which drove the development of the city. Festivities will continue throughout the year to recall the values upheld by Saint Martin, a “European” character before his time. It will be the opportunity also to rediscover the heritage associated with him like the old Marmoutier Abbey, once one of the largest in the west. www.saintmartin2016.com
