President’s Message By Alan Lurie, DDS, PhD The Annual Meeting, this year in beautiful Savannah, Georgia, is coming up soon. We are looking forward to excellent scientific sessions, superb CE courses, fine southern cooking and plenty of comraderie. While it is a tough act to follow Michael Vannier, we have excellent guest speakers for this meeting, including sessions on TMJ from Dr. David Hatcher, radiology and bisphosphonates from Dr. Laurie Loevner from University of Pennsylvania, and an interactive lecture/learning session on cranial base anatomy on computed tomographic images by Dr. Douglass Fellows, Chair of Diagnostic Imaging and Therapeutics at Connecticut and a Colonel in the United States Army. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) held a Public Comment session in Silver Spring, MD on July 16. FDA has developed a Draft Guidance Document on future manufacturing of x-ray machines to include parameters specifically for imaging children at doses lower than adults, but with diagnostic quality. Manufacturers, physicists, pediatric radiologists and other stakeholders attended and presented at this meeting; I represented AAOMR and Dentistry, gave a presentation in the morning session, and was one of 10 panelists in the closing round table discussion and Q&A for the final 2 hours of the meeting. The major points of my presentation and discussion – solely directed at reducing dose to children – were: (a) re-invigorate the use of rectangular collimation; (b) mandatory thyroid collars for intraoral imaging and where possible for extraoral imaging; (c) elimination of D-speed film; (d) acquisition parameters specifically for children on all CBCT equipment, and (e) increased emphasis on pediatric imaging in the education and continuing professional education of dentists. Pete Benson headed the committee which rewrote the CODA Standards document for our specialty. Pete, along with Christos Angelopoulos representing AAOMR and Mansur Ahmad representing ABOMR, attended and spoke at the CODA hearing on Standards revisions, which occurred on July 16 in Chicago. With minor wordsmithing and some intent phrases inserted, it was recommended that the document be circulated again to communities of interest for one year and that open hearing be conducted at the 2012 meetings of AAOMR, ADA, and ADEA. Those comments will be reviewed by the CODA OMR Review Committee in summer 2013 again and recommendations will be made to the Commission at the summer 2013 meeting. This protocol is pretty much standard operating procedure. Allan Farman continues to be very busy on behalf of the Academy, working feverishly on DICOM issues, billing codes and chairing the nominations committee. The Academy would be substantially more productive if all of the committee chairs were as committed and active as Allan. Finally, we need to better connect with our sponsors. They have been increasingly supportive and generous in their involvement and backing of the Academy, and we all need to reach out to them and show our appreciation. We certainly do need their financial support as we look forward to a period of growth and the continued relationship with our managing company. Next year, September 28 – October 6, we will meet in Los Angeles, at the legendary Beverly Hilton Hotel. For the first time, there will be special room rates at the meeting hotel for residents, enabling them to stay with the group and gain the increased networking and opportunities that accompany being there the entire time. Meanwhile, the opportunities for family activities are enormous, ranging from the nearby La Brea Tar Pits and Page Museum to the LA Art Museum to Beverly Hills and Rodeo Drive, right across the street! Transportation and guides can be arranged for more distant attractions, such as the UCLA, Staples Center, Santa Monica beach, Universal Studios, Getty Museum and so much more. We’ll finish the meeting on the Stardust balcony, overlooking all of the LA basin, home of the Golden Globes Awards. Alan Lurie President 2

Report from Denmark Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology in Aarhus, Denmark There are two dental schools in Denmark, one is part of the University of Copenhagen and the other part of Aarhus University. Aarhus University is a rather young, but very active university situated in the city of Aarhus (also spelled Århus) on the peninsula of Jutland. The Department of Dentistry (“Tandlægeskolen”) is part of the Health Faculty, and approximately 70 undergraduate students are each year enrolled in the dental school. The Section of Oral Radiology is a separate section within the Department of Dentistry and consists of one full-time professor, a full-time associate professor, a clinical teacher, three clinical staff radiographers, one secretary, one ITmanager and several PhD students. The dental school has a broad PhD student program including international students from many places in the world (e.g. Brazil, India, Japan, China). Besides those PhD students who obtain a full Danish three-year scholarship for their PhD studies, we have at Oral Radiology a number of foreign students, enrolled in PhD programs in other parts of the world, who spend 8-12 months of their PhD studies with us. From the Section of Oral Radiology approximately 12-14 international publications are issued per year.

International OMR Section Claudio Costa, DDS, PhD. [email protected]

As opposed to the other Nordic (Scandinavian) countries, dentomaxillofacial radiology is not a recognized specialty in Denmark (orthodontics and oral surgery are the only two recognized specialities). The two full-time professors in Aarhus, however, both hold a Norwegian specialist diploma in oral radiology. Besides these two full-times workers, a part-time professor (Swedish radiology specialist) and a clinical teacher working at the Oral Radiology department, University of Copenhagen, are considered radiology specialists in Denmark. These four professionals provide all postgraduate teaching in oral radiology for the dental community. Digital imaging is used throughout the dental school (one of the first, if not the first, dental school to include digital radiography in the pre-graduate curriculum in 1997). The undergraduate teaching in radiology is completed during the 4th, 5th and 6th semester in a 5-year dental curriculum. Film radiography is taught at a seminar in the 6th semester. The students learn oral radiology through lectures, mini-seminars and clinical practice (manikin and patient examinations), and after the 6th semester there is a written exam. Approximately 4,000 patient examinations are performed per year. For intraoral radiography we work with CCD/CMOS sensors (from 6 different system brands) and with storage phosphor plate (PSP) systems (two different systems). For extraoral radiography we work with panoramic units (one CCD-based unit and an analog unit with a PSP system), one of the units contains a cephalography option (with a PSP system). We also work with a scanography unit (with a PSP system), mostly used for a stereo-scanography examination of lower third molars. Moreover, we have two CBCT units, a NewTom 5G unit mostly used for examination of patients from the orthodontic department, and a Scanora 3D unit used for other CBCT-indicated examinations. In addition, we have at the moment a Cranex Tome 3D available. The oral radiologists make reports of all CBCT examinations and of many of the other extraoral examinations, particularly those from general dental practitioners referring patients to the dental school.

Ann Wenzel Section of Oral Radiology Department of Dentistry Health Faculty Aarhus University Denmark

Since there is no specialty recognition in oral radiology, The National Institute of Radiation Protection requires that a three-day course in CBCT is completed before the general practitioner can work with CBCT in his/her clinic. A radiology report of the full examined volume is mandatory for referred patients. It is estimated that there are 50 CBCT units in Danish dental clinics outside the university. It is also estimated that more than 50% of all Danish dentists have switched from film to digital radiography. Those who use film must use E/F-speed films since D-speed is no longer allowed. Recent quality assurance programs initiated by the Danish Dental Association and the regional boards moreover indicate that a film holder and a rectangular tube opening should always be used in intraoral examinations.

Resident’s Section “Field of View” Dr. Hema Udupa and Dr. Heidi Kohltfarber were elected as the co-chairs of the AAOMR Resident’s liaison committee last fall at the AAOMR meeting. They have focused their “field of view” on continuing the resident organization that was started by Dr. Jeff Price and Dr. Mitra Sadrameli. The first item of business was planning and organizing the part I and II review courses for the ABOMR certification examination. This was held at the University Of North Carolina School Of Dentistry at Chapel Hill, NC, on June 24th-June 27th and was a huge success. This could not have been accomplished without the help and support from our incredible residents as well as speakers: Dr. Walter Huda, Dr. John Ludlow and Dr. Marcel Noujeim. Eighteen oral and maxillofacial radiology residents from various programs across the United States and Canada as well as past graduates actively participated in this four day course. The next project has been to continue with the annual tradition of residents meeting via online Skype once every two weeks. This was organized by Dr. Udupa and the radiology group sessions began the first week of June. Session topics are targeted toward OMF Radiology as well as offering an online forum for the residents to get to know one another. It has also created a venue for residents to discuss scientific research and other related topics. Drs. Udupa and Kohltfarber would like to extend a special thank you to all of those who participated in this year’s ABOMR review course. It was a pleasure getting to know each and every one of you and we wish you the best of luck on the board examinations. We are also pleased to announce that Dr. Lisa Koenig has agreed to speak for our resident’s luncheon at the annual AAOMR meeting in Savannah, Georgia so make sure to sign up for the meeting soon!
